EDITORIAL

BASIC PILLARS OF EDUCATIONEducation needs to encourage lifelong learning. The four major skills of learning

are: Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing (LSRW skills). Learning anything involvesgrasping all the four skills. None of the LSRW skills can be mastered alone without the others,and all of them are equally important.

A student should be able to listen and interpret messages accurately for smoothcommunication process. The importance of listening extends far beyond academic settings. Ithelps a student to practice good communication in day to day life, among friends, family, andother members of society. A student shouldn’t mistake listening to be a simple, and passivetask. Listening requires the ability to absorb information from someone else. It is an activeprocess with five distinct stages: receiving, understanding, remembering, evaluating, andresponding. A better listener will become a better thinker, speaker, and communicator.

Education also teaches a student to speak. The most effective way to communicate isthrough speech. Speech gives one the capacity to put words together in a meaningful way.Speech reflects the thoughts, opinions, and feelings and can be used to inform, persuade, anddirect. Speaking clearly and confidently helps in getting the attention of an audience. It is anopportunity for the speaker to make the message known. The student seminars conducted ina college helps students to sharpen their speaking skills and will come handy in a job interviewor while delivering a PowerPoint presentation. Even in a larger group a good speaker standsout prominently.

Reading teaches a student how to learn independently. It is aptly said that there is astrong correlation between reading and academic success. A student who is a good reader ismore likely to do well in examinations than a student who is a weak reader. Reading helps incomprehending ideas, following arguments, and detecting implications. Reading also improvesconcentration, weighing arguments, taking notes, questioning the errors. Reading teaches thestudents about the world around them. It helps them to learn about people, places and eventsoutside their own experience. It exposes them to different ways of life, ideas and beliefs. Itimproves the vocabulary of students and strengthens their imagination.

Writing skills play a larger part in a student’s life. They come to the forefront in hisexaminations and also in his professional life. The importance of writing shouldn’t beunderestimated as it reflects the capacity for clear thinking. At some point of time or the othera student will be called upon to write a report or a plan of action as part of his job. The studentmay even have to prepare a press note. In fact, even before landing in a job a student needsto write several applications starting from applications for scholarships or for financial assistance.And to get into a job a well written CV or résumé with no spelling or grammatical mistakes isessential. These days we also come across emails, notes, letters, texts, tweets, blogs etc.communicating via the written word. Students with good writing skills have more convincingcapacity and better scope for success.

These four skills are the basic pillars of education. They facilitate a student to be abetter communicator thereby helping him to be successful in personal and professional life.

PRINCIPAL’S ANNUAL REPORT 2014-2015

I stand before you as the Principal of this illustrious College to present my annualreport for the academic year 2014-15 on this 65th College Day Function. The Chief Guest oftoday’s Function is the Member of Parliament from Machilipatnam, Sri Konakalla Naraynagaru. Then we have two Guests of Honour from the Management of the College, Sri KolliKoteswara Rao garu, President and Sri Parvataneni Nageswara Rao garu, Secretary andCorrespondent. From outside we have the well-known Revenue Divisional Officer, GudivadaSri Somepalli Venkata Subbaiah garu who is an official by vocation and a poet by avocation.The senior alumnus of the College Prof. Addada Narasimha Rao garu, is a Professor from theCommerce and Management Department of Andhra University. The youngest member on thedais, another well-known alumnus of the college, is Chalasani Krishna Kumar, an orthopadeicianin Guntur. My hearty welcome to all these members, to the Director seated on the dais, to theTreasurer of the College Management Committee Sri K.S. Apparao garu, other members ofthe Management, Guests, my own colleagues Teaching and Non-Teaching who have beensupporting the academic endeavours in this college and the student friends who have beenmaking our task pleasant.

The admissions this year have been encouraging in B.Com. and B.Sc. while in B.A. itis sluggish. In Intermediate we have the required number to run the course but all together wehave 533 students in the aided wing and about the same number in the self-financed wing.

I wish to inform you about the important events that took place during the currentacademic year:

June 2014:Staff conducted remedial classes for those students who appeared for the advancedsupplementary examinations.

8-6-14: Attended a Principal’s meet convened by the CCE at SRR & CVR Govt. DegreeCollege, Vijayawada and appealed to her to fill up the vacant aided Lecturer postsor at least release some grant to meet the Guest Faculty salary bill.

16-6-14: Regular class work began.

18-6-14 Wrote to the RJDCE and the CCE to permit us to continue the 10 am to 5 pmtimings instead of the proposed 9 am to 4 pm time suggested by them.

23-6-14. UGC Grants Utilisation Committee met and decided to go for erection of a SolarPower Plant and an RO water facility.

4-7-14 Celebrated the Jayanthi of Alluri Seeta Rama Raju. Orientation classes for the FirstDegree Students began.

5-7-14 Dr. V. Ravi, Principal, SRR & CVR Govt. Degree College, an alumnus of ourcollege was invited to address the First year degree students in the orientation classes.

15-7-14 On our invitation Dr. S. Raja, Civil Surgeon, Government Hospital, Gudivada, Dr.B. Shyam Kumar, Dentist, an alumnus of the College, and Dr. Ganta Parameswari,in Government Medical Service in Nandivada Mandal came to our college andconducted Medical Inspection to our Freshers.

19-7-14 DIET students from Angaluru visited the college Biology Museum and other facilitiesin the college.

25-7-14 We finalized the AADPI (Academic, Administrative and Development PerformanceIndicators) and API (Academic Performance Indicators) formats of the College tothe CCE office.

26-7-14 Two members of the Non-Teaching staff Sri R.Chaitanya and Smt. Deevenammaattended the DPC for promotion to higher cadre.

1-8-14 Attended the II Convocation of the Krishna University at Tummalapalli KshetrayyaKalakshetram, Vijayawada.

6-8-14 Col. Goswami visited the College to recruit New Cadets into NCC. The work forinstallation of Solar Power Plant commenced.

15-8-14 Flag Hoisting was done in the College on Independence Day by Sri K.S.Appa Raogaru, Treasurer of the College Management Committee.

21-8-14 Reviewed the preparation for NAAC Peer Team Visit to our B.Ed. College, and on22nd, 23rd August 2014 NAAC Peer Teams had interaction with our B.Ed. staff.

22-8-14 In connection with Tanguturi Prakasm Pantulu Jayanti Akkineni Kalapeethamconducted competitions in Debating, Essay writing, Quiz and Singing and the winnerswere awarded certificates.

23-8-14. Our 10 KV Solar Power Plant was charged and solar power has come into use inthe college in the 65th year of the existence of the College, thanks to the support ofthe UGC.

26-8-14. Students from Ravindra Bharathi School visited the College Biology Museum andthe Library.

27-8-14. Our NSS Students visited Bhushanagulla Primary School, planted saplings on theschool premises and distributed biscuits and fruits to the students.

5-9-14 Teachers’ Day. Celebrated FOUNDERS’ DAY of the College. An alumnus of theCollege, former President of ANRCOSA, Jamnalal Bajaj Award Winner, Sri MalineniNarayana Prasad spoke about the efforts made by the founders in establishing thecollege. Also organized the Upppalapati Veerabhadra Rao Endowment Lecture onEthics in Public Life. Sri Kosaraju Veeraiah Choudary, Chairman, Central Board ofDirect Taxes addressed the students and interacted with them.

20-9-14 ANR Jayanthi Celebrations organized and students who participated in variouscompetitions were given prizes.

22-9-14. Krishna University Chess Championship for Men & Women players was inauguratedin the college and Sri M.R. Prasad, Auditor, an alumnus of the college was the ChiefGuest.

24-9-14 On the occasion of NSS Day books were distributed to the students in the ZamiDintakurru Primary School.

27-9-14 RO water plant commissioned and the best student from each class was presenteda water bottle with the RO water.

27-9-14 Clean and Green as part of Swachch Bharat Abhiyan.

8-10-14 Attended the inauguration of the South India Volley Ball Tournament organized bythe Krishna University at P.B.Siddhartha College, Vijayawada. Assisted the organizersin getting Rs,2,00,000/- sponsorship from the Andhra Bank.

11-10-14Hud-Hud Cycloned ravaged north coastal Andhra, particularly Visakhapatnam.

16-10-14The Members of the Management Committee met and decided to collect donationsfrom the Stakeholders of the College and thus Rs.1,75,000/- was contributed incash and Rs.75,000/- was sent through salary deduction. Our RDO was handedover the amount on 20-10-2014.

18-10-14 A one month Faculty Development Programme was commenced to give orientationto the New Lecturers. It started with the Lecture by our former Principal Dr. YerneniVenkateswara Rao.

25-10-14 Sri Sai Prasad Malineni, Geologist, an alumnus of the College, who settled inLouisiana, USA visited our college and addressed our M.Com. students.

29-10-14 Along with our Office Superintendent went to Nellore to attend a meeting of theRTI Commissioner Smt. Lam Tantiya Kumari relating to the result of an MBA student.

30-10-14 Prof. CSN Raju, UGC Emeritus Professor, Acharya Nagarjuna University visitedour college and addressed the MBA Students.

10-11-14 Prof. Addada Narasimha Rao, seated on this dais, visited the college andrecommended to the Krishna University for continuation of the affiliation for UGand PG Courses.

11-11-14 Academic Audit Team (sent by CCE) comprising Dr. Kameswari from SRR &CVR Govt. College, Vijayawada and Sri Prasada Rao from The Hindu College,Guntur visited the college to conduct the academic audit.

Celebrated National Education Day and our Vice-Principal Dr. A.V.S. BhaskaraRao, Sri KSR Anjaneylu former Lecturer in Chemistry and the Telugu HOD, Dr. K.Somasundara Rao were felicitated on the occasion.

14-11-14 Socio-Economic survey of Pedaparupudi village was conducted by our Degreeand Intermediate students under the guidance of Dr. K. Venumadhava Rao, HODEconomics, Sri P.Rajasekhar, NSS Coordinator and Sri R. Venkaiah, NCC Officer.Our Principal took our Degree and PG Students on a guided visit to the BiologyMuseum.

17-11-14 Attended my Scholar Anne Padma’s viva-voce for Ph.D. which was conducted atJNTU Hyderabad. She was awarded Ph.D. Degree.

19-11-14 National Library Week – Dr. K. Sivanath, HOD PG Chemistry & Sri U.SuryaKumar, HOD Mathematics were awarded BULS award.

21-11-14 Students from Dosapadu High School visited our college Biology Museum.

22-11-14 FDP classes concluded with the feedback from the participants.

27-11-14. ZPH School students from Zamigolvepalli visited our college Physics and ChemistryLaboratories and they were given training in Basic Science Experiments and viewingsunspots using refractor telescope.

27 Nov. to 13 Dec. 2014 – Campus Cleaning, Swachch Bharat activities and preparation forAkkineni Foundation of America’s Award Presentation to 9 illustrious people in ourcollege on 17-12-2014.

11-12-2014 Dr. V. Ravi, Principal, SRR & CVR Govt. Degree College, an alumnus of ourcollege was felicitated on receiving the Best Principal Award and I attended thefunction to honour our alumnus.

16 & 17 Dec. 2014 A 2 day Numismatics and Philatelic Exhibitions commenced in the college.

17-12-2014 Chief Minister Chandra Babu Naidu couldn’t make it to the Statue UnveilingCeremony of our former Chairman, Akkineni Nageswara Rao.

Dr. Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad, our alumnus, presented the bronze statue of AkkineniNageswara Rao which was erected on a special pedestal at the entrance of thecollege portico.

9 illustrious persons from education, administration, service sector and cinema industry,selected for awards by the Akkineni Foundation of America, were presented awardsby Akkineni Nagarjuna noted cine artist and son of Akkineni Nageswara Rao.

It was a day of hectic activity and memorable for its splendor.

22-12-2014 Yoga training programme was conducted for the benefit of students.

29-12-14 A regular visitor and a well wisher of our College, an icon in Library Movement inAndhra Pradesh Sri Velaga Venkatappaiah passed away. We went to Tenali to payour respects to the departed soul.

6-1-15 Prof. Gudipati Lakshmi from Community College of Philadelphia, who has a linkagewith our English Department, visited our college and addressed our UG and PGstudents.

17-1-15 Attended the Inauguration of IIM Visakhapatnam at Gambhiram.

19-1-15 Pre-Public Examinations commenced.

Some Academic Achievements of Staff and Students

Department of English: The Members of the department presented 7 papers in NationalSeminars. One Ph.D. was awarded to a Scholar under the guidance of Dr. S. Sankar, ourPrincipal. Dr. A.V.V.V. Malleswaramma was awarded Ph.D. Degree by Andhra University.

Department of Telugu: Dr. K.Somasundara Rao, I/c. of the Department presented one paperin the National Seminar. 5 Scholars have been working under his guidance for their Ph.D. Healso published a paper in Visalandhra daily newspaper. He was awarded Kaviraju SahitheeVihar Puraskar.

Department of Hindi: Dr. K. Janakee Devi, I/c of thr Dept., presented a paper in NationalSeminar.

Department of Economics: Dr. K. Venumadhava Rao, I/c. of the department presented twopapers in National Seminars and also conducted a Socio Economic Survey of Pedaparupudivillage.

Department of Mathematics: The members of the Mathematics Department presented 7 papersin National Seminars and 1 Paper in International Seminar. 2 papers of Dr. A. Satyanarayanahave been published in British and American Journals.

Department of Physics: The members of the Physics Department presented 12 papers inNational Seminars and 2 Papers in International Seminars. Our II B.Sc. students won II prizein poster presentation on the theme Energy Resources for Future. Sri K Anil Kumar, Lecturerin Physics received an educational kit ‘UNIVERSE IN BOX’ from Prof. Deborah Scherrerof Stanford University.

Department of Chemistry: Sri K. Sudhakar, Lecturer in Chemistry, led two batches of studentsto Vijayawada SDMSM Kalasala and Andhra Loyola college for participation in differentevents and they also secured prizes in short film category.

UG Department of Library Science: Sri P. Srinivasa Rao, Lecturer in Library Science presentedtwo papers in National and one paper in International Seminars.

P.G. Department of Commerce: The P.G. Department of Commerce organised two guestlectures and the resource persons were from Malineni Sai Prasad, Louisiana, USA and Prof.Gudipati Lakshmi, Philadelphia, USA.

M.Com. students participated in the Commerce Fest 2015 - CONVERGENCE organisedby P B Siddhartha College and Secured 2nd place in Black & White Event

During the academic year 2014-15 our staff submitted papers in 32 National and 4 Internationalseminars.

Career Counselling:

Our Career Guidance and Placement Cell has taken our students to Campus RecruitmentDrives of Infosys and other MNCs in the surrounding colleges. Cadbury India has conductedRecruitment Drive for our students and outside students in our college.

ANRCOSA:

An Alumnus of our college Sri Sai Prasad Malineni from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA visitedthe college, interacted with our students and gave feed back on the campus maintenance.

Staff:

As on date our college aided wing consists of 17 aided lecturers with 9 Ph.D. degree holdersand 6 M.Phil. Degree holders 1 SLET qualified member. We have 11 members working asGuest Faculty which includes 5 new staff members Ms. B. Vijaya Durga in PG Commerce,Ms. K. Sukanya in Chemistry, Ms. G. Amala in Physics, Ms. S. Lakshmi Padmavathi and Mr.M. Jesubabu in Computer Science.

We have well qualified, efficient and committed administrative staff – thirty one in aided category.

Academic Environment:

Several Departments have been conducting Add-on Courses for the empowerment of students.A good number of our Teaching Staff were invited to different colleges to deliver Guest Lectures,and many of our staff members participated in National, International and State level Seminarsorganised by different Institutions all over the country. Dr. A. Satyanarayana of Mathematicsattended an International Conference in Calcutta, West Bengal. Smt. AVVV Malleswarammawas awarded Ph.D. by the Andhra University in 2014. Many of our students visited theVijayawada Book Exhibition during January 2014 under the supervision of our staff members.

Sports:

Our Director of Physical Education will submit his report shortly but I wish to state that ourstudents won Medals in 6 Team Events and in 4 Individual Events. 14 of our players representedKU in different events. For the first time this year our cricket team has won the Gold Medal inEast Zone and also reached the semi-final tournament of the Krishna University. Miss B.Priyanka of I B.Sc. Computers won the Gold Medal in the South Indian Inter UniversityWomen Kabaddi Torunament at Kannanore University, Kerala. Mr. N. Sudheer has beenselected to represent AP in Kho-Kho in the 35th National Games to be held in Kerala. Healso secured a place in the All-India Cross-Country tournament organised by MG University,Kottayam. This year, our players achieved a record by securing place in number of Inter-Collegiate, Inter-University, State and National level tournaments.

NCC

Our NCC Boys Wing has a strength of 88 cadets and our Women’s Wing has 50 cadets. OurOfficers Captain R. Venkaiah and Captain N. Aruna Kumari guided our cadets and madethem participate in several Camps, Social Service Rallies, Swachch Bharat Abhiyan programmesand voluntary work, sapling plantation on Aids Day etc.

Students’ Co-operative Stores:

Our Students’ Co-operative Stores has been catering to the needs of students and staff andproviding them with even pen-drives at a fair price.

It would be unfair on my part if I don’t thank the Akkineni Foundation of America who havechosen our college as venue for giving awards to 9 illustrious members in different fields.Similary Padmasri Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad, former MP and ANRCOSA member haspaid his tribute to the college and to Sri Akkineni by presenting the bronze statue of Sri Akkinenifor installation on the campus. I also thank all the members of the Akkineni Family who havemade it convenient to attend the ANR Statue Unveiling function and who with their verypresence mesmerized the gathering in general and our students in particular.

Lastly, I wish to state that, I have been able to discharge my duties thanks to the unstintedsupport of the Members of the Managing Committee, our Vice-Principal Dr. AVS BhaskaraRao, senior lecturer Sri P. Srinivasa Rao and all other staff members who have been standingby my side through thick and thin. I have been dependent on my administrative staff forstreamlining the work in the college and my young student friends who have been giving me anopportunity to serve them. The other stakeholders of the college, the press and the electronicmedia have been generous in publicizing the various activities organised in the college and Ithank them all from the bottom of my heart.

3. Miss. P. Phani Bharathi of IV sem won 2nd Prize in Young Manager Event (VIDUSHA2K14) organized by Krishna University on 29-04-2014.

4. 10 students participated in MBA Meet (MAST 2014) organized by KBN PG. CollegeVijayawada on 19-07-2014.

5. 13 students participated in MBA meet (MAGMALITE) organized by Andhra LayolaCollege PG. Courses, Vijayawada on 23-07-2014.

Our College has one company for Senior Division Cadets (Boys) and one N.C.CWing (Girls). Captain R Venkaiah is an Associate N.C.C Officer (Army Wing) for SeniorDivision cadets and Major N Aruna Kumari is an Associate N.C.C Officer for Senior Wing(Army Wing). The senior division company strength is 100 and senior wing strength is 50. Theminimum N.C.C duration is 2 years and in the second year the cadets have to attend 1 N.C.Ccamp by that they will get eligibility to appear N.C.C ‘B’ certificate examination. The word ‘interview’ is derived from ‘intrevue’ which means sight between’. It maybe defined as any purposeful inter-personal communication between two individuals. Aninterview demands direct and dynamic interaction. The purpose of the interview is mainly toelicit information which is not available from the written records or other sources.

Sure and certain success in interview can be achieved by grasping the underlyingtechnique knowing the essentials and mastering the art by purposeful training. The interview isnot basically to test the knowledge of the candidate in some given subjects or fields. Therefore,one cannot score in the interview by just providing the correct answers as one could do in theuniversity examination or in an objective type question paper. Your knowledge, both generaland specialized thus commands a premium at the interview.

“Knowledge is power’ and “ideas rule the word” are statements which have specialrelevance to the interview. Without adequate knowledge, the chances of significant success ininterview are rather less. Knowledge can be gained by systematic study, adequate reading,discussion, listening to experts and assimilation. Next, to put your knowledge to good use apurposive manner, you must have fluent and effective power of expression. Hence it is saidthat ability to speak is the short cut to distinction.

Another essential aspect to remember is that the personality of the candidate has to beprojected by his own words and response. The candidate should express his original viewsand candid opinions and considered comment on any matter asked of him. However, oneshould not be self opinionated, biased, emotional or rigid. Your views must be rational, logicaland convincing you must give your comments in a cheerful, confident and natural mannerwithout affectations.

Nervousness is a common feature in those appearing for interviews, but once youseeks to root out the causes of nervousness, you feel confident in facing the interviews, butonce you seek to root out the causes of nervousness, you feel confident in facing the interviewboard. On analysis, one finds that nervousness is the offspring of ignorance-ignorance aboutthe nitty-gritty of the interview and fear as to what would happen if you fail to make it, butsincere preparation can spare you the gnawing anxiety and once you are sure you have doneyour best, leave rest to god.

AN OVERVIEW ABOUT INTERVIEW FACED BY DR.ARUSHI CHOWDARY IASTOPPER:

I did a couple of mock tests and group discussions with my friends. I chatted with thefellow candidates. The chairman commenced me on my brilliant academic record and asked afew questions on my hobbies. The most ticklish question was “God does not play dice.” In theend, walked out contented with a broad smile.

Nothing should be imitative, artificial and odd inyour appearance.(c) MANNERISMS:Care should be taken not to indulge in certain mannerisms in your speech and behavior Avoidexperience like um…err, you know…well..Ok…etc. Don’t use slang, highly colloquial languageor uncommon abbreviations. The tone should be friendly and natural but not imitative. Checkcarefully to see that you’re not in the habit of making odd gestures while talking. You shouldnot interrupt the interviewer, wait till he has finished.(d) LANGUAGE AND SPEECH HABITS:

Speech should be lively and expressive.Use correct language.Use proper stress and intonation to strengthen your arguments.Do not feel crest fallen when your point of view.

Day in and day out we keep hearing about the lack of language skills of students inschools, colleges and universities. The administrators, politicians, the parents and the media,not necessarily in that order, squarely throw the blame on the teachers and none cares to gointo the root causes of the problem. With increased technology, with increased educationalopportunities for every section of society, with improved financial situation of the general publiccompared to the 1960s to 1980s, with partly or wholly governments assisted educationalprogrammes, with cell phones and computers and the internet within the reach of commonman, one would presume that the opportunities for a student for acquiring English languagespeaking skills and using them would improve. But while there is an improvement in certainareas – in urban locales, in select colleges, in competitive academic environments – the generalfeeling and observation is that the performance output of the students in using language has notimproved up to the level of expectation or to the level of need. The responsibility of theteacher, right from schools to higher educational institutions, is to help develop the communicationskills of students. But is the teacher to be blamed solely for the non performance of studentsin general?

Before blaming a teacher in particular or teachers in general, we need to look atseveral factors relating to the poor performance of students in the class and in turn at the socialsituations. Sometimes it is pointed out that the teachers are interested only in the completion ofsyllabus, in time, and are not bothered by the slow pace in learning of some (may be a smalleror larger number of) students in the classroom. But then we have to go in to the size of theclass, the number of students willing to learn, their positive responses or, unresponsiveness,lack of interest and lack of understanding. The foundation for a student’s language acquisitionskills are laid at home, then in the surrounding environment and strengthened and shapedthrough systematic training in a formal educational setup in the primary stages itself. In thehigher classes in schools and colleges these skills are further strengthened based on the foundationlaid in the primary stage and also depending on the participative nature of the teacher and thetaught. The regularity in attending this training and the whole hearted nature of teaching learningproduces the average performance of an educational system or a society. With this asbackground we need to look at the factors related to the critical comments on the languageskills of our students.

There is a saying that teaching is the noblest profession and that as teachers we haveto help learners, whether they are willing or unwilling, to develop good communication. Thereis no doubt that a motivated teacher can work wonders in students in favorable or unfavorablesituations, but how many of such teachers are available in our system? Then comes the questionof participation of students in the learning process. Is it possible in any system to bring all the

learners to the mainstream? What about the slow learners? In most cases it is difficult toidentify the reasons for their non-performance. There may be several factors that hinder aslow learner, but without going deep into all those socio, economic, physical or psychologicalreasons, the teacher has to find out if such students are performing well outside the classroom.If they are doing well outside, then we have to surmise that they have a problem with theprocess of education, and it is here that the role of the teacher assumes paramount importance.

In order to increase the average performance of a class we have to strengthen theprocess of education, and for the context of this seminar, the process of language acquisition.A slow learner initially desires to learn but he may have a problem with the process. Hereteacher motivation, peer assistance will be of greater help. The teacher and in turn the systemmust provide for special remedial classes for such students. In such classes, in addition toimparting language, attention must be bestowed on how the student’s self image may beimproved. Further the teacher has to try to increase the attention span of the students to whatis being taught and why it is relevant / useful to him. It should be the endeavor of the teacherto develop the self-expression of such students and to raise their self-esteem. They may beencouraged in such special classes to try to compete with one another and gradually withothers in general classes or with even gifted students. While identifying slow learners is the firststep, handling them properly is really a challenging task for the teacher. It demands greatpatience, minute observation. The teacher must be equipped with good method of teachingtechnique and a compassionate human heart.

In the 1960s, the teaching technique, for imparting language and mathematics, involvedrepetition. Every day, after the class hours, students had to gather in the school ground forlearning mathematical tables simply by repetition, and repetition. Similarly, they had recitationpoems with an asterisk mark both in English and vernacular and the teacher would read thepoem once and then slowly he would recite it line by line to enable the students remember andrepeat the pronunciation and intonation. Saying the same thing over and over helped studentslearn a word and its pronunciation and it also gave them the necessary initiative to read otherpoems or texts independently. But today, such effort seems to be missing in most institutions.

Then the teachers used to involve the students in such activities where the success ofa student was ensured. The process involved in asking the students questions that they cananswer and slowly building their knowledge and confidence by teaching some familiar material.But while doing this, care should be taken to make the process unconscious or subconsciousto change teaching in such a way that the students learn without realizing that they are beingtaught.

Another way is to bring the learners to write something on the black board makingthem feel that they too can contribute in a class. It develops their self-esteem and makes himfeel good. This may involve the student’s real life situation which brings out his emotions andthere may be instances where a particular student may be overwhelmed by the flow of ideasand struggling for words. In such situation the teacher has to first ask his classmates to cometo his rescue and provide the words and sentences for his feelings. If the student is notsatisfied with their suggestions then the teacher may supply some alternatives and allow the

student to pick his own answer. In such activities the teacher may move around the class andspeak to the students for a while, involving them in the activity, and make them learners withenthusiasm. This adds variety to the academic routine. Further teachers should also includeeducational games, puzzles, and story-telling activities with different techniques to involvestudents whole heartedly in the learning process.

In all the methods adopted in a class the teacher must be the very picture of love andcare. There have been instances where in the students take the teachers in to confidence andgetting needed emotional and moral support. In a study of pre-service teachers, Serow*found that those who viewed teaching as their calling in life displayed “significantly greaterenthusiasm and commitment” to teach-ing, were more “mindful of its potential impact on otherpeople,” and were “less concerned about the sacrifices that such a career might entail.

The teacher, particularly a language teacher, has to bring humor in the class to createinterest. He should make learning fun and comfortable. The positive attitude of a teacher isvery important and in the general classes he should allot extra time for asking questions and inhelping slow learners answering them. If need be remedial teaching should be provided, andthe UGC has been allocating money for learners who need special assistance, and to avoidconfusion and chaos in the common or general classroom. The strength in a remedial classwould be comparatively small where individual attention can be given to each student.

For all this to become a reality the teacher has to be patient and consistent in his effortsas a teacher. Some graded challenges may be thrown to the students and make them believethat the objectives in such classes are achievable. In such smaller classes, individual attentioncan be shown which boosts their confidence and the friendly environment is conducive forlearning. But, the teacher has to take special care to reduce or totally remove any distractionsin learning. In some of the schools I have seen how teachers change the seating positions ofthe student to promote their attentiveness.

In such classes students may also be encouraged to act as a teacher and this promotesa love for being a peer teacher. Care should be taken to clarify what is required of a studentwhen is acting as a peer teacher. They should be given clear directions about points that maybe written on the board. This not only helps the volunteer to aim for accuracy but also enablesothers to check, guide or correct him. All this would become an involved activity and it makesthe students partners in the learning process and drives away their apathy.

After such special classes the teacher may encourage the slow learners to mingle withothers in the general classes and conduct common tests along with others. The tests should begraded from simple to complex from oral to multiple choice questions, true or false, fill in theblanks to develop their self confidence. After that they may be encouraged to go for writinglonger answers. But after each test the teacher should provide short feedback to the learnersbut without embarrassing them or creating a threatening environment. The teacher shouldnever scold a learner for committing error thus giving scope for extra psychological burden.Even while using a standardized test the teacher can’t ignore the problem of the child.

We have seen teachers making students exchange their answer papers and askingthem to evaluate those papers under the guidance of the teachers. This has a positive effect

and provides ample opportunities to students to learn from their peers. They can develop theirown vocabulary, sentence structure and even the calligraphy from their classmates. Fromamong the students, by consensus, a teacher can select and place a student as in charge of theclass and give some time for the class to interact under the tutelage of a peer-teacher. This willprove to be an activity of rewarding nature and it boosts the motivation of the students andmakes them complete their tasks in the given time frame.

To improve the lot of the students the teacher has to be conscious of his own capabilities.Some common excuses given by teachers are lack of training, lack of time, lack of supportfrom students’ family, lack of support from management but these can be overcome if acoordinated attempt is made by all teachers to help the lot of the students, and in turn help thelot of the society.

For the benefit of the students of our College this workshop has been organized withthe aim of training the students in development of Android Apps. Android is a mobile operatingsystem (OS) currently developed by Google, based on the Linux kernel and designed primarilyfor touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. Android’s user interface ismainly based on direct manipulation, using touch gestures that loosely correspond to real-world actions, such as swiping, tapping and pinching, to manipulate on-screen objects, alongwith a virtual keyboard for text input.
