O ur readings today describe turning points for those whom God has cho- sen. In Genesis, God calls Abram to leave his homeland, with the promise of forming a people in a new land. In the Gospel, the disciples see Jesus literally in a new light, the bright light of Jesus’ transfiguration. They begin to see Jesus, and themselves, in a new way. These are times when God presents a new way forward, providing new purpose and energy. Our lives too have their own turning points, where God is working (usually in less spectacular fash- ion) to lead us into fuller maturity, and into deeper unity with God and others. The road ahead, as with Abram, Jesus, and the disci- ples, may be long and difficult. Lent can be a time when we reflect upon these turning points in our past, and consider how God may be stirring something new in us today. BLEST TO BE A BLESSING The first eleven chapters of Genesis tell the story of the tragedy of human separation from God. But God has not given up on hu- manity. God is on a mission to reconcile and heal all of creation. In today’s reading from Genesis 12, we see the beginning of God’s new strategy: to begin with a single person (Abram, later renamed Abraham) and family and form them into a distinct people, so that all peoples may see God’s blessing in them, and share in this blessing. God’s chosen people are not selected sim- ply to receive blessing, but to serve as ex- amples and agents of blessing. God blesses people not only for their own bene- fit but for all. When we fully thank God, we also accept God’s call to bless others. We the Church receive God’s grace precisely so that we may share grace with others. LISTEN TO HIM In today’s Gospel describing Jesus’ trans- figuration, we hear of the disciples’ vision of Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. Peter, perhaps understandably, responds by trying to en- shrine the moment by building tents for them. However, God interrupts and speaks words identical to those spoken at Jesus’ baptism: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” But here God adds, “listen to him.” Listening to God can take various forms. At some moments, as when we receive new insight or are deeply moved, we want to jump into action. Sometimes this is appro- priate and necessary. But sometimes God interrupts our eagerness, and calls us to further reflection or simply to listen in si- lence. Reflection and action are of course both essential to our faith journey. Yet we recall that God may often speak through silence. Contemplative practice, rich in tradition within our Catholic faith, reminds us that God invites us to an encounter within si- lence. In contemplative prayer, we open ourselves and simply wait upon God. We might encounter a divine Presence beyond words. Today’s Readings: Gen 12:1–4a; Ps 33:4–5, 18–19, 20, 22; 2 Tim 1:8b–10; Mt 17:1–9 ANNUNCIATION CHURCH "As the father sent me, so I send you." 1307 East Longden Ave., Arcadia CA 91006 Parish Office: 2707 Peck Rd., Monrovia, CA 91016 (626) 447-6202 / Fax (626) 447-9834 Website: AnnunciationChurch.net

O ur readings today describe turning points for those whom God has cho-

sen. Our lives too have their own turning points, where God is working (usually in less spectacular fash-ion) to lead us into fuller maturity, and into deeper unity with God and others. The road ahead, as with Abram, Jesus, and the disci-ples, may be long and difficult. Lent can be a time when we reflect upon these turning points in our past, and consider how God may be stirring something new in us today. BLEST TO BE A BLESSING The first eleven chapters of Genesis tell the story of the tragedy of human separation from God. But God has not given up on hu-manity. God’s chosen people are not selected sim-ply to receive blessing, but to serve as ex-amples and agents of blessing. God blesses people not only for their own bene-fit but for all. When we fully thank God, we

also accept God’s call to bless others. We the Church receive God’s grace precisely so that we may share grace with others. LISTEN TO HIM In today’s Gospel describing Jesus’ trans-figuration, we hear of the disciples’ vision of Jesus, Moses, and Elijah. Peter, perhaps understandably, responds by trying to en-shrine the moment by building tents for them. However, God interrupts and speaks words identical to those spoken at Jesus’ baptism: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” But here God adds, “listen to him.”

Listening to God can take various forms. At some moments, as when we receive new insight or are deeply moved, we want to jump into action. Sometimes this is appro-priate and necessary. But sometimes God interrupts our eagerness, and calls us to further reflection or simply to listen in si-lence.

Reflection and action are of course both essential to our faith journey. Yet we recall that God may often speak through silence. Contemplative practice, rich in tradition within our Catholic faith, reminds us that God invites us to an encounter within si-lence. In contemplative prayer, we open ourselves and simply wait upon God. We might encounter a divine Presence beyond words.

Spanish Lenten Mission: Lent is a time to renew our hearts and to walk more closely with Jesus. As part of our upcoming Spanish Lenten Mission, the Divine Mercy Ministry will be offering two days of retreat. On Tuesday, March 17th, Fr. Agustin de la Vega from Radio Guadalupe will give us a talk about forgiveness from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. On Thurs-day, March 19th, there will be a bi-lingual Divine Mercy Mass at 7:00 p.m. All are invited.

Freddie, requesting them to secure gift cards or money for a need of his. Please be advised that none of our priests would ever request assistance like this from anyone. If you receive one of these messages, delete it immediately. Thank you.

The Communion Cup and Sign Of Peace Vs. Illness: With the cold and flu season upon us, as well as other significant health considera-tions, it is important to be reminded of basic health concerns, Christian courtesy and respect for one another. Regarding the Cup, it is your choice to receive from the Communion Cup or not. The Cup is wiped clean after each use; however, if you feel ill, it is Christian courtesy to refrain from taking from the Cup out of respect for others. The use of disposable cups is not allowed, as this is disrespectful to the true Blood of Christ. Likewise, it is advisable not to engage another in a handshake during the Sign of Peace if you do not feel well. If someone declines your hand, it is not out of disrespect for you; in Christian charity we welcome the alternative ges-ture of peace they might extend to us; namely a smile, followed by a wave or a bow. We are confident of your goodness and we trust your judgment. Please do what is most comfortable for you at worship so that you remain holy and healthy. Thank you and God bless.

Did You Know? Online chat rooms are great places for people to connect over shared in-terests and ideas. But for young children and teenagers who may not be internet-savvy, they are also a great place for predators to lay groundwork in a chat room; anyone can be whomever they want -- and predators hide behind personas of friends. Talk to your child about online safety rules, such as never agreeing to meet in person and never providing personal and identifying information. Review chats frequently to ensure that your child is engaging in safe conversations. For more tips on chat room safety, request a copy of the VIRTUS article “Exposing the Dangers of Internet Chat Rooms” at https://lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.
