11 Annual Report 2019/2020

Section 1: Welcome to IAAS

IAAS was established in a decade in which nationsall over the world were still recovering from theharsh devastation and suffering resulting from theSecond World War.

However, young people strongly fostered hopefor progress, peace and stability. Students in thefield of agriculture decided to come together andcreate a new international student platform byestablishing IAAS more than half a century ago1957 in Tunisia.

IAAS was started with only 8 country members atthe beginning. It grew a lot to the organization it isnowadays with over 54 country members withmore than 10.000 members worldwide.

“Our promise is to foster young people with hope for progress, peace and stability.”

SDG 2 Zero Hunger: CounselIAAS

Objective: Raise awareness about food productionand food consumption, and make it moresustainable through the creation of a network. Weneed a responsible conception and production ofthe food; we should focus on giving advices tofarmers because we are producing enough food atthe world scale to achieve zero hunger.

Many foods are stored before being sold and partof it can be wasted. The consumers have to beeducated, and learn to eat more locally, hence thecreation of a network to link consumers toproducers. The farmers can be given advices (tochoose the crop and how to cultivate them), as wellas the consumers (about eating locally andseasonal products).

SDG 11 Sustainable Communities: ComClean

Objective: Clean the air in cities encouragingpeople to plant trees. Many improvements have tobe done to allow better life conditions in alwaysgrowing cities. We decided to focus on the airpollution issue, which affect citizens in their dailylife. Vegetation being a good way to reduce airpollution, we focused on how to put more greens incities to help cleaning the air.

The project would be held in countries / citieswhere IAAS comities are located. It would be donethrough social networks, to reach a maximum ofpersons. The project could be held a specific daywhere everyone would plant trees together, andwe’d ask people to plant trees in parks or theirsgardens within the city, or nearby the city. Theconsequences would be a cleaner air and a greenercity, both improving the life conditions of citizens.A side project would be giving advices on how toreduce air pollution will easy things to do, such asreduce the temperature of the air conditioner.

SDG 4 Quality Education: EduQuat

Objective: Contribute to girl emancipation, increase girl participation in schools, and teach toparents the importance of girls’ education.Education is an issue especially in rural areas, andgirls often have a worse access to education inthose areas.

This education could be provided throughvoluntarily organized summer schools, withtrainings about basic knowledge of agriculture. Wecould also inform parents to use new technologiesin agriculture, which allow needing fewerworkforces. To explain the importance of girlsgoing to school to parents, examples of successfulwomen stories can be used.

39 Annual Report 2019/2020

SDG 13 Climate Action: Climaculture

Objective: adapt agriculture to climate changethrough advices to farmers. Climate changes affectthe world and agricultural systems, so we have toraise people awareness about climate change andhow to put solutions into practice in agriculturalsystems.

The methods would be various, such as plantingtrees around the world, restore lands, make peopleaware about climate change, and collect successstories from farmers to encourage others.

9th ICA Rectors and Deans Forum 2019 Collaboration between European & African Life Science Universities for a Sustainable Future

October 24th – 25th , 2019 (Beauvais, France)

Reported by Lena Garino

The 24 and 25 of October, I have represented IAASWorld at the ICA Forum in UniLasalle in Beauvais. The organization was held by the last year studentsof Beauvais. They are really sympathetic, and Iexplained them a little what was IAAS. Manydirectors of European and African universities werepresent at the forum. The subject was thecooperation between European and Africanuniversities for research and education. The goalwas to identify the mutual benefits that can emergefrom a cooperation between Europe and Africa andhow to achieve it through projects. In this report, Iwill resume the program of Thursday and Fridayand focus on the points that I found interesting. Then, I will write some thought that I had duringthis event.

Introduction to the forum

The forum will put the steps to achieve theobjectives of the Agenda 2030. To do this, thepartnerships between Europe and Africa will facechallenge and will have to grab opportunities. There is not a unique answer to these issues, buteach continent can bring its own perspective andknowledge.

Africa and Europe cooperation in building a sustainable African agri-food sector, Tom Arnold, EU commission task force for rural Africa

There has been an increase of the relationsbetween Europe and Africa. For example, theAfrican Union commission and the EuropeanUnion commission meet every year.

Africa is a continent which will face manychanges over the next decades. Indeed, it’s adiverse continent divided in 3 main regions: NorthAfrica, Sub-Saharan Africa and South Africa. Itspopulation has doubled over the past 30 years andis projected to double again by 2050. It will facechallenges concerning nutrition, education andhealth. To achieve it, four long termrecommendations has been made during the 3rdAfrican-EU agricultural ministerial meeting inJune 2019:• To adopt a territorial approach in planning for

income and job creation• Sustainable land and natural resource

management and climate action• Development of the African food industry and

food markets at 3 levels: people to people, business to business, government togovernment

It is important to define the future politicalrelationship between Africa and Europe. As theCotonou agreement end up in 2020.

Overview of challenges facing African agriculture and life science universities towards 2030: Perspectives from South/Southern African region, Daniel Brink Stellenbosch university South Africa

The goals of African universities for 2030:

• Respond to a demand for affordable, accessible and good quality education

• Increase the focus on science, technology, engineering and agriculture

• Increase the flexibility and transform the wayof teaching

• Change the nature of funding models

The challenge and objectives of the Africanuniversities:• High cost of education: reduced government

funding => Diversification of the fundingmodel

• Competition/globalisation: importance ofinternational network => Internationalpartnership

• Multiple stakeholders: divergence ofstakeholder interest (private funding) =>Public/private partnership

• Complexity of research and innovation agenda=> balanced research and innovation agenda

Section 5: Our 2019/2020

Overview of the challenges facing European agricultural and life science universities, and do they see their development to 2030, Alex Evans university college of DublinThe challenge of the universities:

• The issues are more and moremultidisciplinary: there is more and more tolearn

• Hire the best people to do the best research“war for talent”

• Have the best facilities and equipment• Funding model are changingThe global challenge in agriculture:• Climate change diseases• Anti-microbial resistance• Growing population: 9.8 million people by

2050The challenge the emerge from these two areas:• Be more international but travel less• Be more collaborative but more business like• Be more elitist (to have the best people) but

more inclusive

Agrinatura: European and African life science universities – Structures and aims of partnerships

European and African universities have similargoals and problems:• Attract the brightest students to

science/agriculture• Integrate cutting-edge research with education

The goal of the Agrinatura network is togenerate knowledge. They consider thatunderstanding different contexts makes betterproblem solvers. 35 universities and researchorganizations from 16 European countries belongto Agrinatura and all of them have many partners.

VCA4D (Value Chain Analysis forDevelopment) is a program created by theEuropean Union where 4 persons from differentcountries will work together to solve a problem.

LEA4P: Basis for a common research agendabetween European and African life scienceuniversities:• Sustainable intensification• Agriculture and food systems for nutrition• Expansion and improvement of agricultural

markets and trade• Common research and innovation areaThe goal of the Horizon 2020 program was toboost EU-Africa research and innovationpartnerships on food and nutrition security andsustainable agriculture. For example, on theissues of sustainable intensification pathways ofagro-food systems in Africa and diversification ofrevenue in rural Africa through bio-basedsolution. After this session, there was anintervention from the French agriculturalministry which underlined that cooperation withAfrica is important for France.

LEAP4FNSSA: Towards a Europe Africa research and innovation (R&I) platform for joint action in science, technology and innovation on food and nutrition security and sustainable agriculture (FNSSA), Philippe Petithuguenin, CIRAD, France

In a partnership, there must be funding andpositive impacts on both sizes. It is hard to achieveas there are huge differences between socio-economy of Europe and Africa. There are also hugedifferences between African countries. Thepartnerships of this program begun betweenEurope and Maghreb + Egypt but now they want toextend it to West Africa. To achieve it, they neednew founding instruments such as private actorsbut work together is difficult.

The FNSSA roadmap includes a cross-cutting priority on R&I capacity strengthening. Theproposed platform will be opened to all Europeanand African universities willing to align theiractivities to the FNSSA roadmap and to increasetheir collaboration (between continents andbetween institutions).

Building a sustainable model for doctoral training, research and innovation capacity in Sub Saharan Africa: the PASET RSIF, Julius Ecuru, International Center of Insect Physiology and Ecology (ICIPE), Kenya

The goal of ICIPE and their BioInnovateAfrica program is that by 2063 Africa beprosperous, peaceful and contributing to theglobal development in a sustainable way. ThePASET RSIF initiative is a PhD scholar studentproject. For the first year, 15 students wereselected from 1030. For the second year they were50. The idea is that the student begins its PhD in itsAfrican host university, then go to an internationalpartner institution and finally come back to theAfrican host university to achieve its thesis.

Austrian – African university network: engagement for mutual benefit for a sustainable future, Hubert Hasenauer, university of natural resources and life sciences, Vienna (BOKU)

Example 1: Land use change and its consequencesfor sustainable development in the Amhararegion, Ethiopia

Decrease from 40% to 10% of the forest inEthiopia due to:• The growing population which depends on

forest• Land use change for agricultureRemoving forest erodes the two topsoil layerwhich contains about 40% of the C and N pools.Potential reforestation area: 3.4 million hasuitableCarbon storage if everything is replanted:• 177 Tg of C in total• 11 Tg in the soil• 166 Tg in the above ground

Example 2: Sustainable management of water andfish resources in Burkina Faso

Fish species decrease with the human pressure. There is a high traditional knowledge about waterand fishes but little scientific knowledge on waterecology and human impacts. The BOKU university also do professor andstudent exchanges, promote joint projects, network and organize conferences.

Future EU-African collaboration: What will it take? Achille Assogbadjo, university of Abomey-Calavi, Cotonou

Africa today:• GDP grow at rates faster than global since

2015• The population is getting younger• It is increasingly urbanising

Universities in Africa today:• On 30 000 graduated students, 1000 will find a

job• There had been many collaborations between

Europe and Africa but there are still problems• Low scientific activity and mostly concentrated

in South Africa

Solutions:• To focus on STEAM: Science, Technology,

Engineering, Agriculture, Mathematics• To do professional internship programs: after a

professional internship 50% of the students geta job where they were working

• Invest in laboratories, start up, do jointpublications: they take the example of SouthKorea whose GDP was less than Soudan in1961 and more than 20 times superior in 1995because they invest in new technologies

Unlocking the hidden potential of Sub-Saharan universities, Pascal Boeckx, Ghent university, Belgium

Constraints for agriculture in Africa:• Soil and climatic constraint: drought and

warming, poor mechanisation, nutrientdeficiency

• Economical constraint, for example Nigeria hasa weak business potential but a high agronomicpotential

• Not enough agricultural research intensity: theattainable investment targets are not reached, the current spending on the continent is 2.5billion dollars with 1.4 from Nigeria and SouthAfrica and the growth of 0.8 billion between2000 and 2014 was mainly for salaries

• Aging farmers: 60% in Ghana and 40% inEthiopia of the farmers are above 50 years old

Opportunities:• Public-private cooperation fore economic,

social and environmentally sustainablecommercial crops (cocoa, coffee) but alsostaple crops (wheat, cassava, maize)

• Improve rural innovation capacity, rehabilitateand maintain infrastructures, create networks

• Twinning sandwich PhD: low investment (150000 euros) / high gain

Changing minds and promoting the social-biophysical interface-rethinking South-North academic cooperation, Luis Artur, Eduardo Mondlane university, Mozambique

Agriculture in Africa:• Low inputs: 5% of farms use certified seeds

used, 2.5% use pesticides, 3.75% use fertilizersand 2% have mechanization

We went by public transportation to do somesightseeing and visit farms and organizations inthe Rhineland. This was quite time consuming, sowe had to thoughtfully plan our trips in advance inorder to keep traveling time at a minimum level.Further, we split the group to create smaller ones, because there was often a limit of people thatcould attend visits, e.g. the UN in Bonn.

Whereas Group A visited the UN and a plasticsorting plant (waste management site), Group Bwent to Campus Klein-Altendorf (Universityfarm) and a museum about natural sciences. Bothgroups participated in a workshop executed byEngagement Global and two farms, but atdifferent times. On the last day, everybody wentto Cologne. Beer Making by IAAS NapoliBy IAAS ItalyJanuary 22nd , 2020

Do you remember the last beer we produced? So,finally we decanted our cask in the Department ofViticolture and Enology in Avellino (AV) with thehelp of Prof.Giuseppe Blaiotta who always helpedus with beer. He also helped us to analyze withmicroscopes the micropart of the cooked must, seeing the yeasts inside were in partly alive and theother part had finished the fermenting activity andwe decided beer will be used for researchpurposes. Last month we produced a beer and wetried recipe of Weizen beer, but we had a littleproblem with the yeast, so now we finallyunderstood the fermentative capacity of theBrettanomyces which were used in the Sour , andwe decided to use that yeast to restart thefermentative activity of the Weizen.Next step willbe put inside the cask Weizen beer and we willwait after one month the results but every day wewill carefully follow the fermentation which mustbe spontaneous due to the yeast already present inthe cask. We also will prepare new Starter for thenext beer we will produce on March/April and we’llparticipate to another contest “ Birrando SiImpara” in Avellino (AV)

After most of the participants arrived in Vienna atthe first day, they were welcomed with a relaxedcity tour and a presentation of the most famoussights in Vienna. The last stop was at Centimeternear the Vienna town hall, where we had a feastwith Austrian specialties. Before we called it anight, we had a few drinks at Charly P´s, a well-known Irish pub and then everyone went to theirprivate accommodation provided by the membersof IAAS Austria and their friends.

The next morning, we drove to Hut & Stiel a smallbusiness where they grow and sell eatablemushrooms on coffee grounds. They explained theproduction and we had a tasting of their deliciousproducts.
