Letter from theChair of the Board of Trustees

Dear Friends and Supportersof the Academy of Mount St. Ursula,

Thirty-seven years ago, I became a member of the Mount St. Ursula community when I joined the faculty as a young music teacher. I spent three wonderful years in that position, and although in relative terms my time as an AMSU faculty member was fairly brief, the School and its extraordinary community left an indelible mark on me that continues to shape my professional and personal perspectives. AMSU was then, and remains now, a very special place, one that embodies the Ursuline tradition of service and academic excellence on a daily basis. The dedicated faculty and staff, under the leadership of Sr. Jean Marie Humphries, osu, PhD ’89, continues today to challenge young women to become committed, purpose-driven leaders whose accomplishments enrich their communities and the lives of others in many ways. I can’t think of a better example of Catholic education at its best.As Chair of the Board of Trustees, I am honored to serve with such talented educators and to have the chance to learn about the many exciting activities that animate life at the Academy of Mount St. Ursula. Our evaluation by the Middle States Commission on Secondary Education gave us a chance to study and showcase the work we do, and our efforts were recognized and rewarded by the Commission’s evaluators with a positive outcome. In this publication you will have a chance to learn about the many facets of life at AMSU, and I encourage you to do so.This mission, never more critical, continues to rely on your support in order to thrive. Serving a diverse urban community remains a financial challenge and the Board is committed to keeping this excellent educational opportunity affordable for as many of the students who can benefit as we can. The dollars you contribute help us support students who have great financial need and also help us close the gap between the tuition charged and the cost of an AMSU student’s education. The Board is particularly grateful for the strong financial assistance provided through the Ursuline Sisters and their provincial leadership. But every one of you matters as well, and I thank you again for your historic and robust generosity that has sustained AMSU for nearly 165 years.With gratitude and wishes for a happy and peaceful Easter season,

Greetings,As I was opening the door to my office after being on a phone call, I overhead a junior talking in the hallway with a prospective mother touring our school. The mother mentioned how the building has such a warm and welcoming presence. The student commented right away with yes, the school has such a warm, friendly, and cozy feeling to it. But that is not all that we are about.Catholic education for young women is the core of our mission. Our students continue to be involved in STEM activities, outside SAT and College Prep programs, art competitions, and attendance at musical events. Our Performance Choir was scheduled to perform in the Ithaca College’s Gospel Festival weekend. However, it has been postponed to Fall 2020 due to COVID-19. We maintain our association with Theatre Development Fund allowing our students to attend plays. In addition, we have increased our technology offerings with an Intermediate Computers course and AP Computer Science Principles. This course enabled AMSU to be recognized by the College Board for an AP® Computer Science Female Diversity Award. Out of 20,000 institutions that offer AP courses, 818 have earned the award. AMSU is one of only 639 to be recognized for achieving this important result in AP CSP. Special thank you to Regina Ward ’93 our Technology teacher and coordinator for all her work in this area.Our AMSU Ursuline values continue to shine as students participate in events such as the United Nations, the Sheen Center for Culture and Thought and at liturgies at St. Patrick’s Cathedral for the senior mass with Cardinal Dolan. Serviam is lived out daily thru many activities such as the Cardinal Hayes Program for Exceptional Persons on Sunday, our Lenten drive for toiletries for women in transitional housing and food and clothing drives along with activities in their neighborhood schools and community centers such as Altagracia Faith and Justice Works. During Lent at lunchtime, the Way of the Cross is prayed daily.Friendships are encouraged through our faith-based, social, environmentally conscious and justice-oriented clubs. AMSU students participate in our school musical along with ones at various boys’ schools such as Fordham Prep and Mt. St. Michael. Our Performance Choir sings with Cardinal Singers from Cardinal Hayes High School. We work on Shakespeare productions with All Hallows young men..We want you to know that your support both prayerfully and monetarily is so important to us. Your generous donations allowed us to recently work on building improvements. A new parking lot was constructed, a new boiler was purchased, and just this year new windows were installed. So now, we are really able to conserve energy leaving us a warm school because that’s what the heart of AMSU is — warm, welcoming, and friendly! In many ways our above-mentioned young woman summed up AMSU! As I am writing this, new fire and safety doors are being installed in the auditorium and balcony as per government regulations. We have also fireproofed the auditorium curtains and are constantly staying on top of all that is needed to keep a building running smoothly and safely in New York City.This year at our Open House, I spoke to prospective families calling attention to our welcoming mission. We are constantly following St. Angela’s words of wisdom to treat each student as an individual and attain our desire to really help each student grow into being the best person she can be. Angela’s message is definitely taken to heart at AMSU.Thanks to so many of you, AMSU is able to keep marching forward. As you can see, your dollars are put to very good use. Come visit us!
