School of Technology (DBCET) , ADBU

The first day of the new academic year 2014-15

started off on 14th July, 2014 with a special hour-

long assembly for second, third and fourth year

students. Like previous years this year’s inaugural

session was an event where the newcomers were

acquainted with the philosophy that forms the

foundation of our institute. The official inauguration

of the academic year is scheduled two weeks later on

31st July when the fresher’s would be present.

Welcoming the students and the faculty, Principal of

DBCET, Dr Manoranjan Kalita complimented the

students who were engaged in several learning

workshops as well as internships during their

holidays. Besides encouraging them to make us of the

new opportunities offered during the autumn

semester, he insisted that students participate

wholeheartedly in both co-curricular and extra-

curricular activities as well as get involved in the

various clubs. A group of faculty members presented

the 1972 chart buster song by the Swedish band

ABBA entitled - ‚I have a dream.‛ Though the song

was totally new to the young faculty members, they

learned it and sang it with expression and gusto. One

of the singers said, ‚It was indeed an inspirational

learning experience for all of us.‛ Following up on

the song’s theme, ADBU Vice Chancellor Dr

Stephen Mavely presented the theme for the year as:

‚Build your dreams, or someone else will hire you to

build theirs.‛ He insisted on students to have a dream

which would make them ‚push through darkness still

another mile‛ of difficulties.

“Professional Development Programme”

15th – 16

th July, YEAR 2014

School of Technology (DBCET) , ADBU

I - ‚Mentoring‛

The one-day programme was devoted on the topic ‚Mentoring‛ which is one of the prime

responsibilities of every faculty here in ADBU. She spoke on the importance of mentoring in one’s

life especially for students. She laid emphasis on the aspect that mentor in an educational setting, is

multi-faceted starting from being a teacher, counselor, guide to a challenger. Throughout the

programme, she showed many sides of being a true mentor. A number of activities were also

conducted during the course of the day-long programme.

II - ‚Transformation through Reflection and Critical Thinking‛

Keeping this into mind, the 2-day programme was designed with the following objectives:

1. Exploring strategies to become aware of and minimize the unconscious bias and common

assumptions so that we can help create for the students an environment that supports risk

taking and engagement with the curriculum.

2. Training in the use of appropriate dialogue in the classroom to create a context of collaboration

and mutual support between teachers and the students.

3. Training in the art of being goal oriented - this will help create instructional goals for the

students.

The idea of conducting the second 2-day PDP

on ‚Transformation through Reflection and

Critical Thinking‛ had been sourced from the

student feedback which is given the maximum

weightage of 35% in faculty performance

feedback system. A theme of student feedback is

"clarity of concepts" – something which is most

sought and appreciated for. Another

recommendation from student feedback is to

"understand students better and that not all

students are able to learn in the same manner".

With the beginning of the new academic year

(Autumn 2014), Assam Don Bosco University

conducted a series of Professional

Development Programmes with the objective

of fulfilling the University’s continuous

endeavor to deliver on the commitment of

Professional Development for the faculty and

staff. The first professional development

programme was conducted on 10th July, 2014

and Mrs. Loya Agarwal, a renowned

counselor of the city was the resource person.

4. The necessity of ‘getting into a state of being stressed enough to be successful’ – involving

effective harnessing of goals, assignments and time to be successful.

5. Awakening to ‘Keeping the Big Picture’ in mind - reinforce and clarify core concepts.

6. Training in the art of critically reflecting on the teaching profession, its culture and ethos –

thereby helping the students to get into the habit of being given to reflecting on their own lives.

Mr. Neville Lobo, Global Head of Training & Development, Larsen & Toubro and Mr. Rohan

Athalye, Training & Development, Larsen & Toubro, conducted and facilitated this programme

which was held on the 15th

– 16th

July, 2014.

During the same day, Mr. Lobo introduced to all the importance of ‚Experiential Learning‛ which

he said is one of the best methodology to be used for adult learning as it focuses both on content and

process and combines cognitive, affective involvement, theoretical and conceptual material. He also

discussed as to how the process of experiential learning cycle works. During the process of

introducing experiential learning (ELM) cycle, he also introduced a famous model of ELM, known as

Kolb’s Learning Cycle. The model he said is composed of four elements namely; Concrete

Experience (CE), Reflective Observation (RO), Abstract Conceptualization (AC) and Active

Experimentation (AE). The essence of introducing these concepts were to make the faculty members

understand the various teaching styles that they adopt over time depending upon the learning ability

of the students. To further simplify on the things and make one understand their own teaching styles,

Mr. Rohan introduced a small game to test and find out the same. By the end of the day, each

department was asked to prepare a presentation on any topic of their subject-matter by applying all

the four styles of teaching and learning adopting Kolb’s Learning Cycle.

The second day began with the presentations given by each department by applying all the four styles

of teaching as was reflected upon the previous day. This was followed by a short movie named as

‚The Fish Story‛. The idea behind showing the movie was to make everyone reflect upon the

importance of enjoying one’s work and changing the outlook of seeing and doing things. The second

half of the day was devoted on making every department outline and document some key factors,

principles and practices that they would ‘start doing’, ‘stop doing’ and ‘keep doing’ as a department

of the university.

The first day programme began with some real

fun-filled ice-breakers and group activities.

After the group activities were over, each

group was asked to reflect on the core of the

essence of group tasks and critical analysis of

the same. Groups were again reshuffled and

were asked to jot down on ‚what should be an

ideal teacher like‛. Each group came out with

different viewpoints and these were further

documented to be used as a reference later.

School of Technology (DBCET) , ADBU

The 15th saw third semester students of the civil and mechanical engineering enthusiastically

participating in the student development program whose principal theme was ‚Together towards

excellence‛. After an introductory session of fellowship and joy, they were introduced to the topic

‚Manage stress before stress manages you‛, through an interactive session conducted by Ms.

Sahiba and Neelam, faculty of the Psychology department of ADBU. In the second session of the

day, Fr. Abhilash, former associate director of Don Bosco Institute, Guwahati, led the students

through a journey that will lead them to excellence, the attitudes and behaviour patterns that can

assure the students of excellence in their student and professional life.

The session was conducted by Victor Narzary of the MSW department, well versed and experienced

in social commitment.Ms. Sontara then briefed the students on the correct understanding of the

meaning, purpose and process of mentoring. This was very appropriate since the faculty of DBCET

had an enriching day-long session on the topic in the week prior to this development programme. The

third semester students of CSE, EEE and ECE had a similar programme on the 16th

. On the 15th

July, the seventh semester students of the civil and computer science engineering had a full day

programme on the theme ‚First steps towards the Corporate‛, a very practical training session on

the theoretical and practical aspects of resume preparation, group discussion, personal interview

and aptitude test. The sessions were conducted by Mr. Shahnowaz Hussain, the very well

experienced head of the Training and placement cell of DBCET, with the assistance of other faculty

members.

15th and 16

th of July, 2014 will remain

indelible in the minds of quite a no. of

students of DBCET, for it was during these

two days that nearly 500 of them, in two

batches had the opportunity of spending an

entire day, being guided and supported in

their efforts to develop themselves as

dependable individuals, as they begin their

technical and professional training for the

academic year 2014-15.

The first session in the afternoon was devoted

to the topic of social commitment, most

relevant for the students especially in the

context of their being more focussed on

technology and related topics; besides, it

served them as an introduction to the

practical social involvement of DBCET in

favour of the neighbourhood and the students

of the villages in the vicinity of the college.

“Live Talk on Data Warehouse and Career

Planning”

6t h

November, YEAR 2014

School of Technology (DBCET) , ADBU

In his message to Don Bosco University students of Information Technology, Mr. Ahmad said, ‚It has

been an honor sharing my knowledge with bright students of Don Bosco University. It’s time for the

new generation to come forward and lead. In the vast field of Information Technology (IT) and

Computer Science I suggest students to plan their career based on their area of interest and market

demands. In today’s’ market fields of data warehouse, data mining, programming and networking

provides good career. Doing certification in relevant field always provides competitive advantages

to get a better job. Those interested in the field of data warehouse and data mining can consider their

career start as role of ETL developer, data base administration, database analyst, and Business

Intelligence (BI) Analyst by using tools e.g., Microsoft SQL including SQL Server Integration

Services (SSIS), SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS),

Microsoft Power BI, Crystal Reports, Macro strategy etc. For those interested in programming can

consider web (using .Net, PHP, Java) and mobile programming. Another dimension is to consider

help desk related jobs and considering certifications like Information Technology Infrastructure

Library (ITIL). By stating all of this, I am just scratching the surface as there are lot more options.

Finally, I wish you all the best for your career‛.

2nd Semester

The SDP program for the students of

B.Tech second semester of CSE and

MNE branches was held on Jan 09,

2015. The program started at around

9:00 am and consisted of three sessions

held by different faculty members and

each was based on different topics.

The first session was taken by Father

Francis. This session was basically about

the importance of SDP and how one can

overcome fear which is common for

many upcoming students.

The second session was taken by two

faculty members of the psychology

department. It was an interactive session

and various exercises were done. The

session was based upon what is stress,

common causes of stress in students and

different types of stress. Tips were also

given on how to control stress.

The third and final session was conducted

by Sontara maam. She explained to us

the importance of mentoring and

counselling for students. She also

explained how the mentoring system of our college works. Suggestions were also taken from the

students on how to develop the mentoring system of our college.

Overall the student development program was quite helpful for all the students. It motivated the

students to some extent by helping them to overcome different forms of fear we face and how to

handle stress.

4th Semester

Student Development Programme (SDP), is considered to be a crucial part and parcel of all the

students residing in this college. This programme is being conducted each semester as the mark of the

beginning of every new semester. The main objective of this programme is to mainly motivate the

students and bring the correct flow of energy in them for a better beginning of a new season out

here in the campus. Students are highly given importance in building up one’s inner potentials and

boost confidence in them by making them visualize their real capabilities through this programme.

Well, now, coming to the main theme, we, the 4th semester students, have been a part of this

programme. We got divided into two batches. The first batch, consisting of students from departments

of EEE, ECE and CSE and the second batch of students were mainly from departments of MNE and

CVE. So, for the first batch, the SDP was scheduled on 23rd January,’15 and for the second batch, it

was on 27th January,’15. The SDP was organized by a joint team of faculties, under the guidance of

Father Francis Fernandez.

The SDP was a complete package of motivation and self development skills. Few sessions were

included in this programme for the upliftment of the students’ morale and inner potentials. We had

few lecture sessions in this programme by few of our faculty members- Neelam ma’am, Nabamita

ma’am, Joseph sir and Father Francis Fernandez himself, who gave their valuable time for us in

giving away their thoughts on various important life skills and qualities that we do need to realise in

one’s life for creating and establishing ourselves in a better state of our lives. Sessions on personality

development skills, leadership, etc. were being presented to us by them and we got the opportunity to

visualize ourselves in what scenario do we stand in our lives. Few paper works on some of the

sessions were also given to us which helped us to rate ourselves in few of our important qualities that

we need to posses in a better way.

The sessions were very interactive and open for all of us. We got to learn and know many things

related which are very crucial and important to all of us, though we don’t feel their importance in our

daily lives. We do come across many things in our lives but only few of the things gets notified while a

majority of them gets skipped before our eyes. We also had a group discussion within ourselves where

we got divided into small groups and were made to discuss on some of the burning issues of our

country. At the end of the discussion, chosen leaders of each group were being called to present their

respective group and to read out their discussion made in brief. This session was a complete

interactive and knowledgeable for all of us as we came to know some important facts and painful

issues that our country suffers till date. It was really amazing to see everyone’s interests and

realization to such issues in our country. This, I would say, was the most interesting and fun-filled

session of the day, with a huge and whole hearted participation from all the students together.

The whole programme was a whole day long schedule but it was really good to be a part of it for all

of us. We do earned lots of new experiences and important things from our guides, who all had been

very generous to us throughout the whole programme. At the end, the programme was also graced by

our Vice- Chancellor, Father Stephen Mavely, who was very happy to see the way the programme

was being conducted by them, for us and appreciated all of us for a better way of conduct and

learning environment that we were a part of it throughout the sessions.

At the end, before concluding, I would like to add that though the sessions were conducted the whole

day long but at the end of the day, no one of us went back home empty ended. The whole day was

full of new things to learn, a day full of opportunities and realizations for us. This had been

successful only because of our guides who left no stone unturned in making all the sessions’

interactive and best way of learning for us. And even all the students, who had been taking active

participation in all the activities of this programme throughout the day. Finally, it ended as a very

crucial and important day of this semester for all of us with a vision of good hopes and enthusiasm to

be carried out throughout the semester and even more than that.

6th Semester

This year the student development program for we 6th semester students was not like the ones we had

earlier, we had an experience that we would never forget. The 6th semester students were taken to

Shanti Daan, Lankeswar for our SDP program. Every year SDP for each batches of our college are

conducted. But this time it was a very different kind of SDP where the students got the chance to get

involved in helping the sisters of Shanti Daan in doing the works for the less privileged ones in the

society.

The students of the four branches of third year, engineering course not only interacted with them but

also helped the elderly people to do some of their daily works like washing the clothes, cleaning the

surroundings, cooking and some more. We also conducted various entertaining programs for them,

even though none of us were prepared. Every student willingly entertained them in their own ways,

some danced while the other sang, it was truly a moment where we enjoyed performing. The best part

was they not only watched us performing but also joined us, holding our hands and dancing to every

song that was played. We students contributed some amount and brought refreshments, fruits and

biscuits for them. Finally at the end we had a short interaction with the sisters and also thanked them

for the wonderful service to humanity.

This SDP has helped us understanding the value of humanity and to have a good realization of the

situations of abandon parents, wives and homeless ones. All they needed was someone to listen to,

someone to hold their hands, so we were very happy and fortunate that we got the opportunity to be

the one and also that we experienced such a wonderful moment. Many of us also decided to visit them

in our later semesters. It would not be right on our part if we don’t thank our institution for

organizing such a wonderful SDP program and we would also like to thank Fr. Francis and the

teachers who accompanied us in our program.

8th Semester

It was on these three days of March( from the evening of 29th March to 31st March 2015), we, the

combined students of ECE and EEE branch had this wonderful opportunity to have our SDP or the

Social Development program in Don Bosco Institute of Management, Kharguli. It was led by

Father Francis Fernandez, the controller of examinations of ADBU, and two of the faculties of

ADBU, Samarjyoti Saikia Sir of ECE Branch and Pushpanjali Konwar Madam of EEE Branch

respectively.

A bus was arranged for the journey from ADBU, Azara to DBIM, Kharguli and we reached Kharguli

at about 5 PM in the evening where we were given a warm welcome by the faculty in charge of the

orientation program, Miss Pinky Sarkar. All the students were allotted rooms and after short

refreshment, the sessions started soon and it ended with a wonderful movie. The next morning, i.e on

30th March sessions began with exercises including jogging and aerobics from 5:45AM .And after

breakfast, we had a wonderful session taken by the faculties of DBIM. And soon after lunch, there

were group activities for all the students and it really helped us freshen our minds and learn a lot

many things and soon the day ended with a cultural night in which all the students of ADBU and

DBIM interacted with each other and everybody participated wholeheartedly.

Finally on the last day, i.e the 31st of March, after breakfast we had this wonderful session by the

Director of DBIM in which each and every students were presented a very important presentation

that helped them to learn a lot many moral values. And thus with the vote of thanks from the students

of ADBU, the SDP session ended. So, we can conclude by saying that in these 3 days, we did learn a

lot many things, and it was so memorable for us that all the students were full with heavy hearts as

the sessions came to an end.

(KLHEP) for the 6th semester students.

The dam (Hatidubi dam) has seven radial

gates which are hydraulically operated at

200 HP. The normal water level is 313.8

metres and it risesupto 330.5 m. The

danger level is 316 m, when the danger

level is reached the gate must be operated

for the safety of the dam. On the other side

of the dam there is a non-overflow section

and it is not operated by gate. The Hatidubi

dam also has a stop log gate for the

repairing the radial gates. Water is taken

from the dam through a low pressure

tunnel of length 4.5 km and diameter of 4.2

metres to the penstock. There are two

penstocks of diameter 2.60 m and the

lengths are 526.70m and 514.20 m. Two

salient Pole Synchronous Generator of

capacity50 MW each are used to generate

power and the turbine was francis turbine.

The generators in the power house require

excitation for which the power house has

four 420V dc static excitation systems. The

generators are self excited by AVR. The

excitors consist of Thyristor Bridge

Rectifiers which convert the ac to dc and

this dc is given as excitation through slip

rings. The AVR is also used as compensator

for reactive power. The power generated in

armature is carried through bus duct. Air,

water and oil cooling system are used in the

“Workshop on Virtual Lab”

18t h

March , YEAR 2015

School of Technology (DBCET) , ADBU

A half day workshop on ‚Virtual Lab‛ was

conducted by IIT Guwahati on 18th March

2015. Seven experts from IITG came as

resource persons and conducted the workshop

from 12:30 PM to 4:00PM.

The experts who came to the University

expressed their desire to set Don Bosco

University as a remote center for this virtual

lab project.

In addition, Virtual Labs will be made more

effective and realistic by providing additional

inputs to the students like accompanying audio

and video streaming of an actual lab

experiment and equipment.

For the ‘touch and feel’ part, the students will

also be get opportunity to visit an actual

laboratory for a short duration.

This virtual lab project is an IIT Delhi

initiative funded by MHRD, Govt. of India.

Virtual Labs will provide to the students the result of an experiment by one of the following methods

(or possibly a combination)

Modeling the physical phenomenon by a set of equations and carrying out simulations to

yield the result of the particular experiment. This can, at-the-best, provide an approximate

version of the ‘real-world’ experiment.

Providing measured data for virtual lab experiments corresponding to the data previously

obtained by measurements on an actual system.

Remotely triggering an experiment in an actual lab and providing the student the result of the

experiment through the computer interface. This would entail carrying out the actual lab

experiment remotely.
