President’s Say

Greetings from the entire two legged, four legged, feathered and finned family of Thane S.P.C.A.

On behalf of our beneficiaries, let me begin with gratitude. All of you, who crossed our paths this year, have been pillars of strength, driving our programme implementations with ease and faith. Each of you responded so generously to all our appeals – this underlines the faith that you place in our work. Your generous giving has healed bodies, transformed lives and built a stronger community of animal lovers and care takers.

Essentially, while every year is a continuation of our objectives and vision, on our part we remain committed to alleviating the suffering of thousands of animals who live their lives miserably on the streets, hiding from the hatred spewed at them. Our facility has grown with regards to number of patients, community outreach against cruelty and sensitisation. We have remained devoted to providing quality service. We have strengthened our capacity by appointing more staff. Looking at the rising demand for attending to outpatients, we have increased OPD timings. We have made animal care affordable by waiving surgery fees and treatment fees for students and poorer sections of the community.

To combat the space crunch, and to be able to reach out to more animals, we have added one more ambulance to our fleet. A spanking New Dost from Ashok

Leyland now supports our services sponsored by Shriraj Foundation and

Divyug Agricultural and Stud Farms.

ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016 Page 4

To continue with our vision of co-operation and handholding, this year we have handed over one of our ambulances to Mumbra Animal Welfare Society (MAWS), which provides animal welfare services in one of the most unfriendly territories in the district. MAWS have been working in Mumbra for many years, but until recently, they lacked a mobile service. The Trustees of Thane S.P.C.A. unanimously decided to share one of our ambulances with MAWS for on-site treatment as well as transportation of injured animals to either Thane S.P.C.A. or to Bombay S.P.C.A. While the asset still belongs to Thane S.P.C.A., the ambulance is now allowing MAWS to reach out to more animals more effectively. We pray that we receive many more opportunities in the future to offer more support to fledgling organizations in the coming years.

While we as a NGO are not legally required to produce any documented reporting, we do this as a good practice to retain optimum transparency with our esteemed donors. Apart from the Annual report, our quarterly newsletter The Trumpet and regular social media updates are our efforts to maintain the credibility we have established in the past years.

Running an NGO professionally can be a daunting affair. For me and my fellow Trustees, it is important that Thane S.P.C.A. maintains a strong financial position so that our programs can be accessible to all beneficiaries across boundaries of pedigree.

As President of the organisation, I have had the opportunity to employ and work with stimulating and dedicated staff and selfless volunteers. I look forward to continue working with them this year round, and continue to marvel at how they improve the lives of animals around them. On behalf of the entire Governing Board, I conclude by thanking the patrons, staff and volunteers for their enduring commitment to serving the cause.

- Shakuntala Majumdar

Face of Thane S.P.C.A.

This year we celebrate #Shakuntala Majumdar-The Iron Lady, the driving force

behind Thane SPCA.

Earlier this year, on International Women’s Day (8th March 2016) to be exact,

Shakuntala Majumdar was awarded the Naari Shakti Puraskar by the Honorable

President of India Shri Pranab Mukherjee in New Delhi. This was done on behalf

of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Government of India.

Needless to say, this is one of the most prestigious accolades awarded to only

the most exceptional women of this country.

ANNUAL REPORT 2015-2016 Page 6

This award is just as precious to Shakuntala Majumdar as every dog or cat

treated and rehabilitated into loving homes, every rhesus monkey and turtle

released into the wild, every baby donkey or pregnant horse saved from abuse,

and every cow and bull retired into dignity. She stands for those whose backs

are broken by negligence or cruelty, she speaks for them, she listens to the

countless whimpers and feels for the hundreds of sores and festering wounds

which the hospital treats daily under her stewardship, and most importantly,

she acts in the hope of alleviated suffering, constant love amidst heartache and

all in all, a better world.

Shakuntala Majumdar lives for animals and their welfare and her life embodies

real, raw and passionate action towards social justice in a sector of society that

has historically been the most trampled on and exploited, that has been victim

to the harshest human brutality, discrimination and cruelty.

She crusades for animals and here’s wishing her the very best of luck in her life’s

work.

About Thane S.P.C.A.

WHO WE ARE From the summer of 2002, Thane S.P.C.A. has become a household name for animal lovers, not only in the district of Thane, but also in places out of Thane. This is clearly reflected in the increasing number of beneficiaries that we are logging. What started as an Ameliorative service 12 years ago, graduated into Educative, Preventive, Legislative and Supportive services being rendered. One challenge all NGOs face today is the rising cruelty towards animals. Whether such cruelty always existed and is only surfacing now due to the emergence of social media, a major chunk of our energies is being diverted to thwart cruelty cases. However challenging it may become the goal of the organization remains Protection and Welfare of Animals and Animal Rights. Thane S.P.C.A. remains dedicated to alleviate all suffering that crosses its path and strengthening rights of animals through the work of its Legal Team. In order to achieve this, Thane S.P.C.A. is committed to foster co-operation with multiple stakeholders, be it local communities, governmental authorities, other NGOs or private individuals. The hallmark of this organization was and always will be honesty, transparency, good governance, public disclosure and accountability.

OUR VISION

To become the preferred support system for any animal with any need.

To run a state-of-the-art hospice where no animal will be denied treatment based on species or pedigree.

To run the organization with values that will be our guiding principles for everything we stand for, say or do.

All stories do not have a happy

CAPTAIN, the Monitor Lizard,

was a victim of road rage. His

STAR, a male golden and white cat, was shot with an air gun by his neighbour. There can be no reason for this kind of behaviour, so we will not even get into that. Of the three bullets, two were removed surgically. However the third one was lodged in a critical position in sub cutaneous tissue causing severe internal bleeding in liver. Prognosis was completely guarded. Star expired on the same day. An FIR was lodged by Thane S.P.C.A. and the accused was arrested.Read More

Gratitude

What motivates Endowment donors to give the way they do? This is a topic we have marveled at for so many years now. Giving is not a financial transaction. Giving is the most personal acts that anyone can make. Giving is about the donor, primarily, who is probably fulfilling their aspirations through the field work we do. We have come to realize, the primary reason why donors give, is because they are passionate about the cause of the organisation and the genuineness of the people who run it. While many donors give on a case to case basis, endowment donations come in because our donors care about the sustainability of the organisation. They have realized that that the well being of the people who are employed to serve the beneficiaries and their working conditions matter just as much as the direct benefits to the beneficiaries. Sometimes more! This year we take time out to thank all our donors who have supported us for sustainability.

Grants

With the increase in the number of calls to attend to on the spot, we had to add another ambulance to our fleet. Shriraj Foundation and Divyug Agricultural and Stud Farms came forward and jointly sponsored an Ashok Leyland ambulance for this purpose. Now we have been able to depute one ambulance exclusively for the Mumbra Bhiwandi area which was most uncared for.

Gifts in Kind

On a daily basis, we are touched by the generosity of the animal-loving community, students and various organisations who donate tangible items like food, blankets, towels, soaps and stationary for daily use. They enable us to redirect our resources towards our other services and programmes. Corporate Support

For the last 2 years, J.K. Ansell Ltd has ensured we maintain utmost hygiene in our daily

treatment by keeping a steady flow of Examination and Surgical Gloves for the use of our Medical and Support staff. We cannot thank Shri Rajat Khosla enough for co-coordinating this act of giving. A lot of animals have slept peacefully this past one year because you cared. Truthfully, we could not do this without you. We, and those we serve, deeply appreciate your generosity.
