TGIF Club suffers lossesEditor: In 1949 the TGIF Club was born on the second floor of the old Blackstone Café in downtown Mount Pleasant. We met every Friday afternoon to sing popular songs of the era, play shuffleboard, play the juke box, etc.

The host, chief organizer and secretary was Wally Town, Class of 1951. His records showed 97 regular members, mainly from the classes of 1950 through 1952.

In 1992 Wally retired from the Bay City Times and moved to Traverse City. He dug out the old list of TGIF-ers and embarked on organizing a reunion after 41 years. In 1993 the first reunion took place at the Beach Haus Motel.

This year about a month before the reunion, Wally passed away. His last wish was for the reunion to go forward as planned. We conducted a special tribute and spread his ashes over the grounds of the Beach Haus Motel.

The TGIF Club lost another member this year, Victor Sinclair, an Air Force veteran who also worked for the FBI and the CIA.Wally and Vic will be sorely missed and long remembered as true Chippewas.

On behalf of the TGIF Club,

Jerry Oehmke, ’51 • Clinton Township, Mich.

Family legacy began in 1966 Editor: I am writing today with a story that began 41 years ago. My husband, Brian, and I met at CMU in 1966 and graduated in 1970.

We lived in Colorado, Illinois, South Dakota and finally Wisconsin before retiring to Traverse City, Mich. It wasn’t until our oldest son, Brett, decided he was going to CMU that the pages of time began to turn. The entire family was part of the trip to take Brett to Central – a six-hour drive from Milwaukee.

Brett graduated in 1998 and led the way for his sister and brother to follow in his footsteps, as he had followed in ours. Brooke graduated in 2004, and Heath graduated in 2007.

If someone were to ask me what I did in my life, my reply would be: “Put three children through Central Michigan University.” The 14 years of driving from Wisconsin in snow storms during Christmas break, football games, shopping at the CMU Bookstore, hauling their stuff into the dorms, the worries, tears, joys – all of it is priceless and a walk back in time for my husband and me.

Brooke told me on the day Heath graduated, “I am so proud of what we did.” We all are!

Bonita A. Leiteritz, ’70 Traverse City, Mich.

Kudos for fall issueEditor: As a parent of two CMU students, I want to share with you how much I enjoy reading your magazine. Your Fall 2008 issue was outstanding. Kudos to your staff!

Penny Boldrey • Alpena, Mich.

Tri Sigs remember Niki ByeEditor: In her article about Nikoline Bye and Camille Forster English in the fall issue of Centralight, the writer missed an important part of Niki’s Central connection. She was a highly regarded mathematics professor at Central for years and was the adviser of our sorority, Sigma Sigma Sigma. Many of us Tri Sigs have kept in contact with her for years; she is a special person and meant much to all of us.

Harriet (Horn) Clendenen, ’53 • San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Editor’s note: The letter below is in response to Mary Lu Yardley’s request in the Summer 2008 issue for stories about CMU couples who work together. Have a story of your own to tell? Call Yardley at (800) 358-6903 or e-mail her at [email protected].

From fast food through retirementEditor: We began our working together time even before leaving CMU in 1971. We worked at the Burger Chef at the corner of Preston and Mission where Arby’s now stands.

After a year or so of togetherness over hamburgers, we were off to Bad Axe Public Schools in 1971. Marcia began her teaching career in second grade and finished it there 32 years later. Jack taught fourth grade for two years before becoming an elementary principal in 1973. Over the next 30 years Jack was principal of the K-2 building, the 3-5 building or both. The years he was assigned to the K-2 building we worked in very close proximity. The years spent at the 3-5 building were also close as the buildings were only 100 yards apart.

Upon retiring in 2003 we relocated to Lake City and continued to work together building a log home on the Clam River. We plan to “team up” on future projects, as well as enjoy all the fun activities of retirement.

Jack, ’70 MA ’75, and Marcia Moore, ’71 Lake City, Mich.

Not many people ever see themselves portrayed on the big screen, but that will be the case for John Grogan, ’79, when “Marley & Me” hits theaters nationwide Christmas Day.

Owen Wilson plays Grogan and Jennifer Aniston plays his wife, Jenny, in the movie based on Grogan’s best-selling novel about the Grogans’ lives with their naughty but lovable dog, Marley.

“Jenny and I spent several days on the set while the movie was being filmed, and we really liked what we saw,” Grogan says. “Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston have a wonderful chemistry and really seemed to get inside our skin to play us with a lot of passion and realism.

“At times it was an out-of-body experience for me, watching Owen,

No trays = water savingsTo save water and use less soap, CMU has removed food trays from its residential restaurants.

“We are always looking for sustainable and eco-friendly designs to implement in our daily operations,” says David Burdette, vice president of finance and administrative services. “Removing trays from the dining commons, a

simple step, will have a significantly positive impact on the campus and surrounding community.”

In addition to the sustainability benefits, eliminating trays has meant that students take less food and throw away less food. An

Aramark study found that eliminating trays translated to a 25 to 30 percent reduction in food waste per person.

“Going trayless was awkward at first, but my eating habits actually got better,” says senior Jessica VanHoose. “I am only taking as much food as I can eat and not wasting so much. Plus I feel good about helping the environment.” •

Rap pioneerDaryl “DMC” McDaniels of legendary rap group Run-DMC spoke about the history and future of hip-hop as a performance art during a lecture at CMU this fall. Run-DMC was the first rap group to have a video on MTV and the first to be nominated for a Grammy award. The group is nominated for induction in the 2009 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class. •

Owen Wilson, Jennifer Aniston and one of the several dogs who play Marley.

People everywhere can enjoy views of the Alaskan wilderness from the comfort of home, thanks to journalism professor Kent Miller, who spent 10 days last summer at the 6 million-acre Denali National Park and Preserve, snapping photos of everything from grizzly bears to dogsledders and landscapes.

Denali officials are using the photos in park books, brochures, educational presentations and more. In all, Miller donated more than 1,400 photos. See more than 60 of them, including the moose and calf above, in the photos and multimedia section of the park’s Web site, www.nps.gov/dena/index.htm.

Miller also helped establish a CMU internship program at the park. Junior Neil Blake will be the first intern next summer, working as an assistant to Denali’s media specialist to maintain and create content for the park’s Web site. •

Welcome AidenCMU’s first family grew this spring with the birth of Aiden Michael Rao, born May 25. He weighed 7 pounds, 8 ounces and measured 21 inches long. Aiden, already professing his love of the university on his shirt and hat, is sometimes spotted at CMU events with mom, Monica. Big brother Miguel, who turned 9 this fall, was about Aiden’s age when Michael Rao began as CMU’s 12th president in 2000. •

dressed to the tee like I used to dress, answering to the name of John Grogan. I can’t wait to see the whole film, start to finish.”

This fall Grogan is on a book signing tour for his new book, “The Longest Trip Home,” a memoir about his childhood in suburban Detroit. •

Grade: ACMU has again earned the Michigan Department of Education’s highest rating for teacher preparation programs.

The state compiled the ratings of Michigan’s 32 teacher preparation programs as part of the Title II Higher Education Act annual report to the federal government, says College of Education and Human Services Dean Karen Adams.

CMU received 63 of a possible 70 points and has been recognized with an “exemplary performance” rating. CMU received the maximum number of points in several categories of the evaluation, including state teacher

certification test pass rates; recruitment of and preparation of students to teach in high-need content areas; and the response rates and results of a survey of graduates to assess their satisfaction with CMU’s program, as well as a survey of mentor teachers to evaluate the performance of CMU student teachers in their classrooms.

“It is extremely important that our graduates are determined to be ‘exemplary’ – the highest level – when measured using these federally mandated standards,” says Adams. “This is exactly what we hear from principals and superintendents, who are very pleased with our graduates and their qualifications.” •

Q: In Greenpeace, did you ever get injured?

No, the closest I ever came to being injured was when the U.S. Coast Guard inappropriately handcuffed my hands behind my back with one of those plastic straps. They had me cinched up with my face down on a metal deck on the Coast Guard cutter because I had interfered with a supertanker coming into the Strait of Juan de Fuca. They manhandled me in an inappropriate way, and that was the closest I’ve ever come to being injured.

Q: On your Web site, you write “May the forest be with you.” Do you really say that?

I do. My other forestry slogan is “Trees are the answer.” There’s a bit of a contradiction in a lot of people’s minds, because on the one hand people love trees as being beautiful and don’t want to see them cut down. On the other hand, they need to recognize that much of our built infrastructure is made from this most abundant renewable material on Earth. And we have to balance the preservation of trees and forests with the utilization of this renewable material. It’s complex. All of the materials and energies and foods that we eat all come from this very complex ecosystem that we call the planet Earth. It’s all actually quite a miracle, as far as I can see.

Q: Are you hopeful?

Tremendously hopeful, but that’s just me, the optimist. I believe that the sun will eventually consume the Earth in a large ball of fire, because that’s the way suns evolve. We will, in other words, perish in flames, just as they said in “Ghostbusters.” But that’s a long way off.

For the time being, I’m extremely optimistic about the ability of human ingenuity, creativity and intelligence to work ourselves through our problems – one of which is finally leveling off the human population to some sustainable level and then probably gradually reducing it. It’s common in nature for exponential population growth to occur and then crash. I’m quite optimistic for the future, but there’s a possibility that I don’t have any justification for that. •

Q: What environmental issue do you believe has the most misinformation or misunderstanding surrounding it?There are a whole bunch of them. First and foremost today is the issue of nuclear energy. Seventy percent of all the non-carbon electricity in the U.S. is produced by nuclear power, 25 percent by hydroelectric, and all the rest put together are only 5 percent. So it’s clear to me that from a purely environmental point of view, nuclear energy is a clear and obvious choice for electricity generation.

Q: What else? The issue of genetic modification and biotechnology. There is no evidence of any harm to health or the environment from use of genetically modified food crops, and they have a tremendous positive benefit from an environmental and human health point of view.

Then there’s the subject of forestry, which is one of the world’s largest industries, producing the most abundant renewable material and energy resource. If you look at energy, for example, wood is by far the most important renewable energy resource in the world. Our belief is, from an environmental perspective, we should be growing more trees and using more wood.

Q: How do you feel about the younger generations’ level of science education and how this relates to environmentalism?Well, science education is never good enough, it seems. I think we need a much greater emphasis, not just on science education, but on critical thinking. That’s where it all starts. You can be an arts major and still analyze scientific points of view critically. It very much helps, though, to have the basics of biology, chemistry and physics.

Environmentalist Patrick Moore, a founding member of Greenpeace, visited CMU in September to discuss sustainability and his views on energy and natural resources.

Moore formed Greenspirit Strategies in 1991, a consultancy focusing on environmental policy and communications in natural resources, biodiversity, energy and climate change. He promotes sustainability and consensus building among competing concerns.

CMU is moving forward with establishing a rurally focused school of medicine to help address an anticipated shortage statewide of 6,000 physicians by 2020.

Extensive feasibility studies confirmed that, as the nation’s 67th largest public university, CMU has a strong foundation of basic sciences, library resources and instructional technology to establish the school.

“This is an important, visionary move that will benefit and address critical needs for the entire state,” CMU President Michael Rao said after the CMU Board of Trustees voted unanimously to proceed. “This medical program will help address the future health care needs of 2 million people in a very large geographic region in central and northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.”

Unlike other medical education programs that have treatment clinics and research laboratories, CMU’s program will focus on preparing physicians. The university will leverage and partner with existing programs and resources in both The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions and the College of Science and Technology to establish a school focusing on rural and underserved populations and the diseases most prevalent in mid- and northern Michigan.

Research shows that more than two-thirds of graduates from this type of rurally focused program go on to practice in rural settings.

The next steps in the process include bringing closure to clinical affiliation agreements with appropriate health care organizations and obtaining preliminary school of medicine accreditation through the Liaison Committee on Medical Education. •

The detailsProgram. Four-year Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) program – referred to as an undergraduate medical education – for students who already have completed bachelor’s degrees

Enrollment. Approximately 100 students per year, beginning as early as 2011, spending the first two years studying on campus, where the university already has a significant investment in basic sciences and health professions programs

Affiliations. Off-campus clinical affiliations, yet to be finalized, with regional partner health care institutions where students will complete the final two years of the medical education program

Facilities. Modest addition on the east side of CMU’s Health Professions Building to accommodate up to 200 first- and second-year students, as well as possible facilities with health care partners in the region

A life in

Kathleen Sheridan, ’05, shares her giving spirit and broad smile with everyone she encounters.

The photos here are from the nine months Sheridan spent as a humanitarian aid worker with Medair in a Patongo IDP (internally displaced persons) camp in Uganda, East Africa. She promoted health and hygiene as a member of the medical and water sanitation team.

She left that position in July, spent time visiting family and friends in the U.S., and now is spending the fall and winter in London, working to earn and save money to support her through her next volunteer position. Sheridan may have gotten her itch for travel when she studied abroad several times while she was a CMU student.

In the spring she’ll be back in Uganda volunteering with Gulu Support the Children Organization, helping to reintegrate abducted child soldiers from the LRA and doing vocational training for formerly abducted children and for the child mothers.

In July she wrote: “I feel so enthused about this and am looking forward to the transition and keeping my heart in Uganda.” •

Uganda When Sheridan arrived in Uganda in November 2007, this is what she wrote about waking up in her dream:

“I realized this on Monday, as I was spitting out my toothpaste after brushing my teeth and watching it fall on the ground, splattering across the chicken feathers on the dirt. I had just crawled out of my mosquito net dome and was eager to see the sky, knowing it would be full of sun by this point. I was surrounded by huts, and children and mothers were lining up at the water point to fill their jerry cans. Here I was in the middle of this IDP camp, with the Acholi people, assisting with a program that I really believe in. I had arrived; I was at the place I had been dreaming about.”

Palace playErnie Zeigler and the Chippewa men’s basketball team visit The Palace of Auburn Hills Saturday, Dec. 20, for a nonconference game against Robert Morris. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m., and the game is part of a doubleheader with Michigan playing Oakland.

“Playing at The Palace is huge for our program because we are recruiting in the metro Detroit area hard,” Zeigler says. “It also provides our alumni and fans in the region the opportunity to see us in a fabulous venue. The exposure of playing in an NBA arena will hopefully prepare us for what we would see in the postseason.”

CMU’s schedule also includes games at tradition-rich programs Kentucky (Dec. 29) and Marquette (Dec. 2). •

Women’s hoops honors Nissen and 1984 MAC champsThe women’s basketball program invites alumni, fans and family to a special celebration at Rose Arena Jan. 17 when the Chippewas face the rival Broncos of Western Michigan. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.

CMU is celebrating the 25th anniversary of former head coach Laura Golden’s 1983-84 undefeated Mid-American Conference championship squad with a reunion, as well as a second special ceremony. Hall of Famer Sue Nissen is having her jersey retired, becoming the first CMU women’s basketball player to garner the honor. Nissen is CMU’s only three-time first team All-MAC selection, and she’s the all-time leader in points scored with 1,938. •

Wrestling recruiting class ranked No. 2 nationallyCMU’s class of incoming freshman wrestlers has been ranked as the No. 2 recruiting class in the country by W.I.N. Magazine. The Chippewas signed five student-athletes to a national letter of intent, and three won high school national championships this past year – 125-pounder Scotti Sentes (Fort Myers, Fla.), 174-pounder Ben Bennett (Rockford, Mich.) and 197-pounder Marcel Dubose (Sterling Heights, Mich.). Bennett was named Mr. Wrestling in Michigan, while Dubose was runner-up. •

Evers pounds out 1,000th career killSenior Whitney Evers slammed her 1,000th career kill against Michigan State Sept. 20. The opposite hitter and two-time second team All-MAC selection was named to the all-tournament team at three events this season. She also moved into the top 10 in CMU history for career kills. •

Top scholar-athleteSoftball player Tracy Kaatz was named CMU’s 2007-08 Dick Enberg Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The outfielder is the second recipient in the award’s history after wrestler Wynn Michalak was tabbed the inaugural winner.

The award honors a CMU junior student-athlete who excels at the highest levels both on the playing field and in the classroom. Kaatz was a first team All-MAC selection while also earning Academic All-MAC honors. She ranked third in the MAC in batting average with a .360 mark, and her 0.82 stolen bases per game ranked fourth nationally. •

Soccer team notches 100th victoryThe Chippewa women’s soccer program began in 1998, and CMU notched its 100th all-time victory this season Sept. 26 with a 3-0 win over Ball State. •

The group achieved a 34 percent increase in the number of students to participate in activities and gained recognition for its signature event, the Past and Present Luncheon, held for alumni and students.

Gold MembershipThe CMU Alumni Association is not a dues paying association. To help support the activities of the association and reach out to all alumni, the Gold Membership program was established a few years ago. The $35 annual membership fee helps support homecoming weekend, alumni activities throughout the U.S. and the Student Alumni Association.

Some of the benefits of belonging to the membership include reduced prices on hotels, travel, apparel, entertainment and more. The discounts and savings received as a Gold Member will more than cover the $35 annual membership.

Our current membership is 2,619, a 2.3 percent increase over last year. We thank all who renewed their memberships and those who are new members. The chart illustrates membership based on college affiliation.

CMU license platesA significant number of alumni demonstrated their CMU pride with a CMU license plate. We have a goal to pass WMU in sales. As of June 15, CMU supporters purchased 8,773, and WMU supporters purchased 9,511 – a difference of 778, compared to 1,000 plates behind last year. We are gaining, but we aren’t there yet. Is your competitive spirit going to let this stand? Help CMU pass its longtime rival on the Michigan roadways! Fire up Chips!

This report doesn’t list all the accomplishments, projects and events for the year, but highlights some that had the greatest impact. To our many alumni and friends, your engagement with your alma mater is truly appreciated and your connection greatly respected. •

The future of journalism has arrived, and it’s at CMU, where the new

Caponigro Multimedia Lab opened this fall to prepare students for high-tech careers in the ever-changing journalism industry.

The lab’s opening is closely tied to CMU’s new major in new media/online journalism, which officially will launch in spring 2009. It will feature such courses as introduction to online journalism, advanced online journalism, computer-assisted reporting, multimedia reporting and an online journalism practicum, many of which will be taught using the lab and its arsenal of new-media tools.

A gift to the university’s journalism department from CMU Board of Trustees Chairman Jeffrey R. Caponigro, a CMU alumnus who is president and chief executive officer of Southfield- and Tampa, Fla.-based Caponigro Public

Journalism goes high-techBy Lindsay Allen, ’00

• CMU has one of only two accredited journalism programs in the state.

• Many journalism students work for Central Michigan Life, the independent, thrice-weekly student newspaper at CMU. CM Life was named one of 48 finalists for the 2007-08 Associated Collegiate Press Pacemaker Award and has been a finalist for six of the past seven years.

• The journalism department is home to CMU’s newest student media outlet, Grand Central Magazine, a Web-based publication. Grand Central received 10th place in the inaugural Hearst Intercollegiate Multimedia Competition last spring.

• This fall CMU’s academic senate approved two new journalism majors: new media/online journalism and photojournalism. Students also can major

in journalism with a concentration on

advertising, news editorial or public

relations.

News bits

Relations Inc., helped to fund the construction and equipping of the lab. The technology-laden facility has been named in his honor.

“The addition of this lab is indicative of CMU’s commitment to the experience of its students,” Caponigro says. “Newspapers have changed and are turning more to multimedia, and the lab will help our journalism graduates stay on top of the game.”

Maria Marron, CMU journalism chairwoman, says Caponigro’s vision and generosity have paved a path to success for her department, its students and its programs.

And the lab’s future is secure, as Caponigro has established an endowment to ensure the facility can keep pace with changes in technology in perpetuity. •

Professor Kent Miller (right) is one of several CMU faculty who teach journalism courses in the new Caponigro Multimedia Lab.

CMU alumni and trombone players David Jensen, David Rivard, Mike Hunter and Vince Browand reunited for the benefit event.

Alumni and donors gathered at Homecoming to officially kick off the $20 million Campaign for the CMU Events Center.

CMU will expand and renovate Rose Center, creating a premier venue to serve the academic, athletic and community needs of the university and the citizens of central and northern Michigan.

“This world-class Events Center will significantly contribute to the overall quality of life in mid-Michigan,” CMU Athletics Director Dave Heeke told the nearly 400 people who attended the kick-off event. “It will also be a key factor in the economic vitality of this community.”

As part of the excitement surrounding the Events Center, CMU and its fans chose 70 former student-athletes to honor as the top performers in the history of Finch Fieldhouse and Rose Arena. •

Nearly 80 people gathered this summer in memory of the late William Rivard at the inaugural William H. Rivard Trombone Endowment Golf Outing at The Pines Golf Course near Weidman, Mich.

Rivard, professor emeritus of music, died March 12. He taught music theory and trombone at CMU from 1959 through 1992 and also was an accomplished composer and arranger.

Campaign kick-off

“He is revered by all of his students for his excellence in teaching and composing,” says Robert Lindahl, Rivard’s longtime colleague in the CMU School of Music. “He was a second father to many of his students.”

The golf outing raised $4,200 for the William H. Rivard Trombone Endowment, which has funded scholarships for trombonists at CMU for the last 11 years.

For information about next summer’s golf outing, contact Lindahl at [email protected] or 989-774-3248. •

CMU leaders, faculty, students and local gardeners gathered this fall to celebrate the creation of the CMU Botanical Gardens.

During a groundbreaking ceremony, Claudia Douglass, associate dean of the College of Science and Technology, was quick to credit alumnus and former

“It’s going to be quite a place,” Fabiano says. “This is something Central needs. It’s going to be great for the campus community and for the larger Mount Pleasant community.”

and President Michael Rao.

The gardens, expected to be complete by fall 2009, have been started in Central Park, west of Park Library and east of the Wakelin McNeel Woodlot.

Gil Starks, a retired biology faculty member, says the gardens will strengthen more than just the sciences at CMU.

“The Botanical Gardens at CMU bring opportunities for students in journalism, business and a number of other fields to become familiar with the diversity and beauty of plant life,” Starks says.

Lorilea Wu, an elementary education and integrated science major, says the gardens will be a great asset to the natural beauty of the campus and a habitat for many important Michigan species.

“I will certainly use it for a place of study, of observation and of relaxation,” she says.

To contribute, contact Gail Moore, development director for the College of Science and Technology, at (989) 774-3773 or [email protected]. •

Extraordinary friends of Central Michigan University Central Michigan University’s Bell Tower Society includes some of the most exceptional friends of the university – friends who are central to helping CMU.

Bell Tower Society members help fund endowments, scholarships, facilities, technology and many other critical needs. They provide energy, enthusiasm and generosity that propel CMU forward as a focused, doctoral-level institution, and they understand the value of CMU’s applied research, creative endeavors and scholarship.

Bell Tower Society members exceed the ordinary and expect the most from their commitment to CMU.

The heritage of the bell towerThe bell tower first rose to prominence during the 1928 dedication of Warriner Hall. Eighty years later, the bell tower remains a beloved campus landmark and symbol of the involvement of CMU’s most exceptional donors: The Bell Tower Society members.

Membership in the Bell Tower SocietyMembership in the Bell Tower Society is the most visible and distinguished donor recognition offered by CMU. Names of donors are permanently inscribed on the Bell Tower Society Donor Wall adjacent to the Rotunda in the Bovee University Center. Bell Tower Society members also are invited each spring to a special recognition event on the CMU campus. As they advance to new giving levels, Bell Tower Society members are presented limited-edition original prints of campus scenes.

Bell Tower Society giving levelsBell Tower Society members are recognized for their cumulative contributions, including cash, pledges, matching, and in-kind gifts through June 30, 2008. Pledged revocable gifts such as bequests and living trusts are included in Bell Tower Society giving totals when Central Michigan University receives the gifts.

CMU receives $800,000 challenge grant from The Kresge Foundation The Kresge Foundation has offered to put its money behind the new Education Building.

But only if CMU supporters are willing to do the same before Jan. 1, 2010.

The Detroit-based private foundation recently presented CMU an $800,000 challenge

grant, which the university will receive only if it can raise the remaining $2.1

million needed to reach its $7.5 million campaign goal. All of

the $2.1 million raised must come as new private

gifts, pledges and grants.

Receiving such a distinguished and highly competitive grant lends credibility to the project, says Michael A. Leto, vice president of development and alumni relations.

“It gives everyone a renewed sense of confidence and

momentum,” Leto says. “It also makes

those involved in the fundraising more focused and energized to work harder to reach the goal.

We are certain it will inspire many additional gifts in support of this marvelous facility.”

Qualities that captured Kresge’s interestsIn addition to enhancing student learning and advancing the education programs, the facility will be the university’s first certified Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design building, incorporating unique sustainable design aspects such as energy efficiency and the use of recycled construction materials.

The LEED certification was among the qualities that interested The Kresge Foundation, says Rip Rapson, foundation president and CEO.

“Central Michigan University provides an accessible, quality education, especially for low-income and underserved communities, and has significantly improved its diversity profile,” Rapson says. “We are delighted to be supporting CMU’s first LEED-certified campus building.”

This marks the second time in six years that CMU has received a challenge grant from The Kresge Foundation. In 2003 CMU received a $600,000 grant after raising $1.9 million for the new Health Professions Building.

Construction of the new Education Building is on schedule for its planned September 2009 opening. •

Up to the challengeYour help is needed for CMU to fulfill the $800,000 Kresge Foundation challenge grant for the new Education Building. Contact Jeff Krebs, development director for the College of Education and Human Services, to learn more about how you can make a gift.

I Am Central:

Amanda Aude

Senior Dietetics major President of the Student Alumni Association

The Student Alumni Association: “Promotes school spirit and bridges the gap between alumni and students. Our Past and Present Luncheon is our signature event, and it is a great way for students to meet alumni.”

Fashion police: Before big games, SAA members “ticket” students who aren’t wearing maroon and gold, and then the tickets entitle the students to free T-shirts.

Spirit signs: “One of our big projects was changing the standard green and white street signs on campus to maroon and gold. Alumni really got behind that and supported us with donations.”

In class: As a high school athlete, Amanda was interested in nutrition and carried that interest to college, where she’s majoring in dietetics.

What else? As a dietetics intern at Oasis High School, she talks with students about the importance of

eating healthy foods, not smoking and choosing healthy lifestyles. “I like being able to make an impact

on someone’s life. I feel like they’re comfortable talking to me.”

Works out: Almost every day by doing cardio workouts at the Student Activity Center, lifting weights and running.

She can’t resist: “Ice cream. And pizza. I could live off of pizza.”

To help support the education of a student like Amanda, go to www.giving.cmich.edu.

Edna Diehl never missed an opportunity to assist students in her classroom.

After her life, she continues to help students at CMU, made possible by a bequest in her estate plan.

In this turbulent economic time, by establishing a gift through your estate, you will not endanger your current financial circumstances.

It’s easy to do. A simple directive in your will can bring future support to many needy students at CMU.

We would be pleased to work with you and your advisor to make it possible for you to provide a future gift to CMU.
