Al Capone doesmy Shirts Novel Unit
(for special ed)
These novel units aresomething I created and
started using in myclassroom. I had students
with significantchallenges and most werenon-readers (like my littleguy). They were the bestthing I ever did, and mystudents LOVED them.
This novel unit has 40different activities.
There is 1 activity foreach chapter that is NOTcomprehension based. So,even if your students donot pay attention, theycan still complete the
activity.
For example, I was notsure students would be
familiar with California letalone Alcatraz. Thisoutlined map will givethem a better feel forwhere the story takes
place.
Suggestions on how Ifound this activity workedbest in my classroom are
provided. I typically had 6-8 students in grades K-5
with one adult assistant inthe room with me.
This entire novel unitcomes in 2 separate files. One is completely in colorand one is completely in
black and white.
This unit comes with avocabulary board.
Vocabulary boards aregreat for ALL students toassist with participationand engagement in group
discussions.
Tips on how to use in theunit!!
Each circle map comeswith 2 choices:
An errorless option withonly correct answers
An option that haswrong answers mixed instudents will need to setaside.
There are several writingprompts in this unit. Thisis an errorless activitythat allows students towrite their own story andshare it with the class.
Finally this unit does come with45 comprehension questions. These chapters were so short, Ihad a hard time coming up with3-5 for each one. So, instead, Ihave a key that tells you whichchapter each question comesfrom. Each question has 3pictures choices.
Answer key included!!
