Dear Young Management Aspirant,

Welcome to Thiagarajar School of Management, Madurai-TSM-one of India’s oldest institutions for aspiring young managers. Established way back in 1962 by the well-known philanthropist-industrialist the Late Shri Karumuttu Thiagarajar Chettiar and carefully nurtured by the Late Shri Manikam Ramaswami, TSM carries with it a rich legacy rooted in quality, relevance, cost-effectiveness and integrity. TSM currently offers high quality two-year full-time management programmes in two streams—the MBA programme affiliated to the Madurai Kamaraj University and the MBA equivalent Post-Graduate Diploma Programme (PGDM) approved by the All India Council of Technical Education, the Government of India apex body overseeing technical education in India. The PGDM programme has certain additional features vis-à-vis its MBA, including a slightly longer duration and certain additional academic courses in view of the inherent programme flexibility. The TSM programmes are fully residential. Nestled in a “green” campus in the temple city of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, TSM is the home of nearly 500 students across the two programmes. TSM management programmes offer a rich blend of rigorous, quality academic inputs by highly qualified academics and cutting edge management practices and applications by experienced professionals from the Industry. And more importantly TSM seeks to go beyond the academics to groom the young aspirants who enter our portals into confident and socially-sensitive, role-ready professionals through a variety of transformational courses in communications, leadership, social awareness, ethics and inclusive development.Nearly 100 companies participate in the TSM campus placement process annually offering a variety of roles and responsibilities across sectors and industries.TSM’s fee structure is one of the lowest in the country for a programme of its quality. Its academic processes are robust and transparent supported by ISO 9001-2015 certification and an academic ERP system. And TSM consciously seeks diversity amongst its constituents—whether students or faculty. We are proud of the fact that the gender diversity amongst the students is one of the highest amongst the MBA campuses in the country. As you scan the befuddling arena of business schools and management institutions in India, you can take the call to join TSM. We are sure that the two years you spend on the TSM campus would be both rewarding from career launch perspective and enriching from an overall personal growth perspective. We look forward to welcoming you on our campus.

TSM offers two management programmes at post graduate level: The Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) and the Master of Business Administration (MBA). Both are AICTE approved and NBA accredited. The former is also AIU (Associate of Indian Universities) approved.

TSM’s PGDM programme being recognized by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) will enable TSM’s PGDM graduates to apply to any Indian University for any higher programmes such as M.Phil, Ph.D etc. TSM’s PGDM programme is one of the very few PGDM programmes in Tamil Nadu to have this recognition presently.

TSM’s PGDM programme is both NBA accredited and AIU recognised : one of the very few such programmes in Tamil Nadu to posses these distinctions.

Students graduating from TSM’s Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) Programme will be awarded an AICTE, NBA accredited and AIU recognised Di-ploma, which will be globally accepted by industry, academia or both.

The superior inputs provided to the PGDM students is demonstrated by the better placement record of PGDM students vis-à-vis MBA.

TSM’s PGDM programme has been designed to transform young aspirants into role-ready professionals. The course seeks to meet the changing expectations of the corporate world as they continuously reposition themselves to the dynamics of a globally connected environment. The emphasis is to help the PGDM participants develop broader managerial and leadership attributes beyond functional knowledge. This includes developing a robust value system, strong analytical, quantitative and application skills, effective communications, holistic business perspective, adaptability and interpersonal skills. The PGDM curriculum and pedagogy have been carefully structured to achieve this intent.

TSM’s PGDM programme is a general management programme with possibili-ties for specialisation along functional lines. The programme is spread over 6 trimesters (terms), each of about 12 weeks duration, over two years. Three streams of learning viz. the academic, leadership and practice school will be imparted and integrated during each term. The academic courses offered during the first year include core courses in functional areas such as Marketing, Finance, Organizational Behaviour and in Foundation disciplines such as Eco-nomics and Statistical tools. PGDM second year courses predominantly consists of electives in different functional and general management areas. The first year curriculum is designed not only to equip the PGDM participants with the required analytical tools and techniques to deal with a variety of managerial situations, including handling general management but also to provide the base for the more specialized courses of the second year. The leadership stream includes specialized courses on effective communication skills, assignments in industry, thinking skills, ethics and values, integrative skills etc.

Another radical factor that distinguish the TSM PGDM programme is the Practice school stream involving experiential learning through continuous engagement with the industry, along with the aca-demic and leadership streams. This is sought to be achieved through, field immersion projects, guest lectures by senior management professionals and a summer internship of 12 weeks’ duration at the end of the first year. It is also envisaged to offer, as part of the course, an eight-day Rural Immersion Programme to expose the students to the leader-ship challenges of organizing and achieving inclusive, sustainable growth.

These initiatives aid the PGDM participants to evolve into well-rounded, role-ready professionals with a winning accolades of the real world issues. The students are also given rigorous leadership training, crisis management and team building ex-ercises in a leadership camp for three days run by professionals who have several years of expertise. The 2018 PGDM programme will commence in the second week of June 2018.

PGDM Programme I Year As indicated, the first year seeks to build a solid foundation through a rigorous set of core courses under the academic stream. This covers all major functional areas such as Accounting, Marketing, Finance, Operations and Human Resources Management and disciplines such as Economics and Organisational Behaviour. A broad perspective of the industrial environment will also be presented to prepare participants for an advanced and more spe-cialized courses in the second year. And in the leadership stream, courses on effective oral and written communication and presentation skills, thinking skills, ethics and values, personal conduct, etc. are also offered. While scheduling the various courses in the three trimesters, care is being taken to balance academic logic and the learning difficulties of the partici-pants.As part of the practice stream, industry visits and field immersion projects are proposed to offer the participants a first-hand exposure to actual work environment and real world problem solving. At the end of first year, par-ticipants will be required to undergo internship in an organisation, working on a project related to any functional or other area identified. The objective is to allow participants to gain useful insights into the actual working of an organisation, its structure, systems and processes and also to give them an opportunity to use the tools and techniques learned in solving real world problem. The internship will also assist in more informed choice of II year electives by the participants, besides supporting them in their initial career choice/role preference.

PGDM Programme II Year TSM endeavors to offer a bouquet of electives in the areas of Finance, Mar-keting, Operations and Human Resources Management. The elective courses concentrate on the applications of tools and techniques in a variety of managerial situations and pursue to offer sharper insights and broader per-spectives in the areas of specialisation. TSMs PGDM Programme, as indicated, is divided into 6 trimesters over 2 years, with a 3 month Summer Internship at the end of the first year. TSM assures to constantly review the design, content and delivery of various courses for their continued relevance and need for updating in the context of changing business environment and management practices. There is a fair emphasis on project work and case studies as part of the regular courses at the school. While working on projects sponsored by organisations, students get the opportunity to interact with practicing managers and gain insights into real-world problems42

Career Prospects of TSM PGDM GraduatesAs TSM’s Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and also accredited by NBA, students gradu-ating from TSM’s PGDM programme can apply for any/all Central/State Government and PSU jobs which are open to MBAs.

They can also apply for doctoral programmes in leading B-Schools like Harvard, Kel-log, IIMs & IITs etc., as well as to Indian Universities.

It may also be noted that Indian companies in the private sector do not make any distinction between PGDM diploma holders from AICTE approved B-Schools and MBAs, either for entry level positions or for subsequent promotions.

PedagogyWhile using multiple pedagogical tools such as the case method, faculty-led discussions, group projects and presentations, Simulation Games etc., emphasis will be on participant-centered learning to maximize learning effectiveness. The goal is to equip students with application orien-tation and problem-solving skills with simultane-ous emphasis on group efforts. The practice stream mentioned earlier is built to achieve this.

Summer Internship Project Every PGDM participant is required to undertake internship with an organisation for a period of 12 weeks at the end of the 3rd term. The in-ternship would typically involve a live project identified by the organisation in consultation with a faculty guide and the PGDM programme administration. While TSM will endeavour to identify suitable organisations and projects for this purpose, par-ticipants are equally encouraged to explore po-tential opportunities.

In-campus ResidenceIn order to facilitate group efforts, regular group interactions as well as library-referenced study, the participants are required to stay in the cam-pus hostels.

Evaluation SystemThe evaluation scheme will be based on class preparation and participation, quizzes and ex-aminations, project submissions and presenta-tions as are appropriate for the various courses. Students will receive Relative Grading for each course which is followed by premier institution like IIMs, XLRI, MDI Gurgaon and other leading business schools across the globe

Curriculum

As mentioned, the first year package consists of the required core courses in both the academic and

leadership streams. Besides a few perspective - building core courses, the second year curriculum mostly consists of

electives. The participants will have the opportunity to choose from a horde of elective courses based on their career preference

and/or professional interests. It is, however, strongly recommended that participants opt for electives in more than one area of speciali-

sation in order to develop a broader view of business. TSM reviews both the course offerings and the course designs on an on-going basis to make sure that the curriculum remains both contemporary and vibrant. And while it would be the endeavour

of TSM to offer a number of electives across various streams, actual offering in any trimester would depend on a min-

imum viable batch-size, availability of the relevant resource person, etc.

TSM MBA Programme is a General Management Programme, with opportunities for functional specialisation. TSM has set a quality policy that emphasizes on developing young Management Graduates who, besides meeting the immediate needs and expectations of the Industry, would also evolve into empowered individuals with an urge for constant and continuous learning and bias for action. The Programme is spread over 6 trimes-ters equally spread over the 2 years, with each trimester of approximately 12 weeks duration.

TSM’s MBA begins with an ice-breaking Preparatory Course of about 10 day-du-ration to prepare students with varied academic backgrounds for a common learning platform. The preparatory course includes more general “soft skills” such as communication, problem-solving, and behavioural skills, and language/communication modules depending on identified needs of the MBA programme participants.

The TSM approach increasingly emphasizes on participant-centered learning as opposed to faculty-driven learning. The pedagogy accordingly includes interac-tive learning through case studies, group discussions, projects, seminars and business games, besides faculty lectures and presentations. On-going interac-tions with practicing managers through guest lectures, focused seminars and workshops, industrial visits and field projects are built into the curriculum.

Amongst the key factors differentiating TSM MBA programme are giving em-phasis on value-based management and involving conscious efforts in incul-cating a sense of broader social commitment amongst our students. TSMs curriculum design and course delivery would emphasize on the importance of factoring ethical choices and long-term sustainability as key variables in the managerial decision process. It is also proposed to encourage and facilitate our students to actively participate in socially relevant/neighborhood projects that would hone them into socially responsible professionals.

First YearThe first year endeavors to build the foundation through a rigorous set of core courses on all major functions such as Marketing, Finance, Operations, Systems and Human Resources Management and disciplines such as Economics and Organisational Behaviour. A broad perspective of the industrial environment is presented and a robust footing is laid for advanced and more specialized learning in the second year. The scheduling of various courses through the 3 trimesters is done striking a perfect balance in academic logic and the learning difficulties from the student perspective.

It is proposed to offer English language and “soft-skills” development courses as additional inputs through the first year with an aim to fortify their overall profiles. Spoken Hindi is offered as a credit course in the first three Trimesters to increase the students confidence and enlarge the scope of place-ments in their careers. At the end of the first year, students are required to undergo internship of 8 - 10 weeks duration in an organization working on a project related to any functional area. The aim is to help students gain insights into the genuine working of an organiza-tion, its structure, systems and processes as well as apply some of the tools and techniques learned in solving real world problems in an organisational setting. This also aids in more informed choice of electives by the students in the second year.

Second YearTSM endeavours to offer a bunch of electives cur-rently permitting specialisation in the areas of Fi-nance, Marketing, Operations, Systems, Human Re-sources Management and General Management based on the inputs given by corporate and the academic experts. The elective courses focus on application of tools and techniques in a variety of managerial situations, it seeks to offer sharper insights and broader perspectives in the areas of specialisation. This need based electives catering to the demands of the job market helps in better positioning of the students during the campus placements.

With “Inclusive growth” as its mantra, India is poised to emerge as a global econom-ic power in the near future. This dream can be realized only through the adroit man-agers of tomorrow. The need to provide adequate knowledge and exposure of the current situation to them therefore becomes indispensable. Thiagarajar School of Management, an eminent B-School in the South since 1962 took a conscious effort to sensitize the budding managers, the prospects and challenges in the adoption of Inclusive growth policy. A Rural and Development Immersion Programme was ex-clusively designed for the students of PGDM/MBA to meet the following objectives.

The key objectives of Rural and Development Immersion Programme are toExpose the students of Business Management to the issues of poverty, inequali-ty and development in rural and urban contextMake them understand the status, issues and interventions related to liveli-hoods, health and education Help them to critically look at the roles of different stakeholders (govt., NGOs and corporate) in the process of development at the grassrootsFacilitate self-reflection process to connect self (as a business management pro-fessional) in development process Appreciate the challenges and problems of NGO’s and entrepreneurial oppor-tunities in rural IndiaTo provides deeper insights about the following key dimensions to the students of management:

Poverty, Inequality and DevelopmentLivelihood and DevelopmentSocial Development (Health and Education)

56

The course is focused on sensitizing about social issues which will eventually help them, to serve the community in a better way. The course is structured in such a way that every student concentrates on coastal poverty, rural poverty, urban poverty which would positively help students to understand the quandary, livelihood and social welfare in a holistic perspective.

The concept of becoming a social entrepreneur is the core take away. As business students, creating social business models out of the social problems is brought as a niche area.

Enterprises generally contribute 2% of their profits to CSR activity. Students of management education are going to be the future decision makers on CSR activities in the organization. In such a responsible sense, they must be cognizant about the areas of con-cern when they contribute towards CSR for such enterprises. Rural Immersion Program serves as a great platform in making them understand the concerned areas.

The programme facilitates a huge positive transformation in the mindset of students about the struggling community. A feeling of compassion, empathy, love and care is all that people expect. RIP helps in nurturing these values that in the minds of students. These programs are imperative in helping them realize the importance of serving the society.

In an effort to conceptualize the field expo-sure and experiences and find its applicabil-ity in the larger commercial sphere, future managers resort to develop research papers. The papers span across several development perspectives such as street children issues, challenges in micro financing, rural health care system and the like. This endeavor of consolidation as research papers has indeed given them an opportunity to gain clarity on important development issues – by con-cept and action, role and action by different stakeholders in addressing development is-sues and the ability to relate with develop-ment issues as a management professional, irrespective of the sector they represent.

Rural and Development Immersion Programme em-phasizes not only on making use of the society for self growth but also to render something to the society in return

PGDM’S INTERNATIONAL EDUCATIONALTOUR - SINGAPORE

Heriot-Watt University enjoys an established reputation for world-class teaching and practical, leading-edge research with an attractive infrastructure. They offer a range of programmes at foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate level. TSMites attended a lecture on International Marketing by Dr.Praveen Balakrishnan Nair which helped students under-stand how domestic products can be taken to the global market with a number of examples and case studies and also did a short project on “strategies to expand your product globally” for which they received a certificate. After the lecture, students were free to explore the city. Communication with Uber drivers and people around gave a whole lot of diverse experience, a new language and more knowledge about the place. The highway lanes are surely scintillating which showed the planned execution of the city. As a city, their tourism sector earns an abundant sum. Food was provided with good quality and on time. As an industrial visit, went to Brands Suntory, prominent company in beverage industry and Sigma Water Engineering plant, Management of water resources. It gave an insight about their business models, their marketing strategies, the markets they cater to, their workforce and its cultural diversity.

Thiagarajar School of Manage-ment (TSM) gives a great opportunity for students to broaden their knowledge

beyond their field of studies. I chose the PGDM course at TSM to help me get closer to my dreams.

It prompts me to think beyond the classroomcontext and provides key lessons in leadership. The

curriculum, though rigorous, brought out the best in me and unearthed my leadership qualities. The facul-ty, guest speakers and peers were of great help in ac-centuating my learning experience. TSM has been a “Home away from Home”, for me. I am happy

to recommend everyone whoever is planning to make their future with TSM.

With an ample number of dreams and thoughts, blissfully landed up here in TSM. I could see veterans

in management coming over here and helping us to explore the management world. I feel my career

secured when i could sense my adrenal rush to compete with the peers in the class. Being seated between the students of diversified backgrounds is enabling us to share the ideas and helping us to take a step ahead.

Excitement adds in learning when one is ensured with holistic development in which TSM is standing out at its best. Feeling grateful for an oppurtunity to be placed in the hands of positive souls and the greens Hope the best is yet to experience and wish we could

unfold it.

Madurai is very well connected to all metropolitan cities by air. Flights from Madurai to Colombo, have kick started the international connectivity which would benefit Madurai’s tourism industry.

There are 126 flights per week to and from Madurai operated by Air India, Spice Jet, Jet Airways to Chennai. Reaching Madurai by road is no big deal these days, the NHAI has made sure that Madurai is connected to every corner of the country through their Highway Projects. The longest national highway NH7 of India which connects Kanyakumari to Varanasi runs through Madurai. So travelling by road is indeed a pleasure. Adapting to the modern trends, the city is slowly gearing toward mall culture .With number of multiplexes increasing day by day, there is lot of space for entertainment too. When it comes to relaxing and having fun, Madurai has its own range of options with tourist destinations like kodaikanal, coutrallam, megamalai located very close to it.

Let’s look at some lesser known facts of Madurai. Based on a WHO report Madurai is one among the 5 cities in India which is least polluted and has the cleanest air.
