GUIDE TO DYING 5

Human beings are simple, predictable clichés. Broken hearts, betrayal, it's all been done a billion times before. The problem is, every time still hurts like the first. And if you're lucky enough to recover, you can be sure that just as you

finish filling in all the cracks in your life, the next one is starting to open.

— George, Dead Like Me

The terminologies used in this section are loose, in

terms of legal definitions. By no means do they match any official terminologies, as legal definitions differ from country to country. These are meant to complete and expand on the causes of death provided in the Wraith: the Oblivion, first edition corebook, p.103.

Peaceful expected deaths after a long and fulfilling life leave few Wraiths behind. This is why most causes of deaths listed here tend to be violent, unexpected or sudden, leaving the individual reasons to remain, either through the cause of death itself, or the unresolved business related to their.

The individual does not need to know and understand precisely why they haven’t fully left this world.

The key to a great Death that leaves an interesting, playable Wraith is a Death that works with the character’s Life. For that you have two main options: either the death works as a chiaroscuro, a strong contrast to the otherwise bland and uneventful life, and the passing itself is the cause of the Wraith remaining, or their death is the (false) conclusion of a series of life events which gave enough traumas to the living being that they are the cause of them remaining, not the passing in and out of itself.
