Week 1: Forgiveness

Main Learning Point: God is the One who forgives

Bible Story: A Prayer for Forgiveness (Psalm 51)

Bible Study materials: Family Prayer Jar craft – complete this craft as a part of the lesson.

Say: o This week we are going to read a psalm that talks about forgiveness. o What is forgiveness? o What is a Psalm? o The book of Psalms is the middle of the Bible. There are many types of

psalms. The Psalm we are looking at today is a prayer for forgiveness. o David wrote this Psalm after he was caught in sin. God had chosen David

to be king because he obeyed God, but David wasn’t perfect. One day, David saw a beautiful woman. David wanted to make this woman his wife, but there was a problem. The woman, Bathsheba, was already married. David had Bathsheba’s husband killed in battle.

o David thought no one knew what he had done, but God knew. God always knows when people sin. God sent the prophet Nathan to talk to David about his sin.

o Let’s turn to Psalm 51 in our Bibles and read David’s prayer for forgiveness.

*Read the Psalm from the Bible or log in to view the Bible Story video for Week 3.

Ask: o Who in the Psalm needed forgiveness? o What does it mean to ask God for mercy? (verse 1)

o What is a transgression? (verse 1) What is iniquity? (verse 2) o Why do you think David prayed and ask God for forgiveness?

Say: o David knew that he had sinned against God and He knew that God is the

one who forgives sin. o We cannot earn forgiveness. God forgives us, according to His unfailing

love and great compassion (verse 1). o We need to be forgiven from our sin. Sin separates us from God – our

relationship with Him is broken because of sin. o We can actually pray Psalm 51 like David, or use our own words, to pray

and ask God for forgiveness. Ask:

o What sins do you need to be forgiven of? o How does God forgive us from our sin? (Jesus paid the price for our sin.

Everyone who puts their trust in Jesus, can begin a right relationship with God!)

Pray: o God, we need your forgiveness. (Confess sins mentioned above). We

praise you because you are the one who forgives us!

Final Question for Discussion:

o This week, what are some ways that we tell or show others how God forgives us? When might be a time that you need to forgive others as God has forgiven you?

MISSIONS MOMENT:

If you didn’t last week, log in to view the Missions Video on New York City. Pray for the people in New York who are learning English. That they would also learn

the truth of who Jesus is.

Bible Skills: Books of the Law, History, Poetry Bible Memory: Psalm 19:14 Bible Passage: A Prayer for Forgiveness; Psalm 51

Supplies Needed: Bible, Craft sticks (5), Sharpie, balloon, paper plate, clothespins (3)

Activity 1: Old Testament Craft Sticks

Choose five craft sticks and write the Books of Poetry on them. Learning our books by division helps us find them quicker in our Bibles and be able to name the

book before and after. Use the craft sticks to play some games: o Scramble them up and work on putting them in order. o Play seek-n-find with them. Hide the craft sticks and go looking for them to put them in

order.

Activity 2: Book Drill

Take the Bible Book cards and pull out the Books of Law, Old Testament History and Poetry. Mix the cards up and place them facedown in a pile. Turn over the top card and find it in your Bible. Name the book before and the book after the one you found. Turn over the next card and repeat.

Race the clock to see how fast you can find the books. For added fun, race a parent or sibling to see who can find it fastest.

Activity 3: Hot Potato Balloon Toss

Grab a balloon and blow it up. Hit the balloon with your hands to keep it in the air. Say words to Psalm 19:14 one at a time as you hit the ball. If the balloon touches the floor start over again. Keep practicing and try to say the verse faster each time. If you have a family member available, toss back and forth saying the words to the verse, don’t forget the reference!

Activity 4: Clip It!

Take the paper plate that is divided into 10 pie wedges and 3 wooden clothespins. Grab a marker and write each of the following references on a clothespin: Genesis 1-2:3, Exodus 12:37-42 and Psalm 51. Then write the following in three of the pie wedges on the paper plate: The Creation, The Israelites Leave Egypt and A Prayer for Forgiveness.

Choose a clothespin, find the reference in your Bible and clip the clothes pin the correct wedge on the plate. Continue for the other clothespins. Note: This will get more challenging as you add more key passages along the way. Save these items for future weeks.
