1. HIGHLIGHTS OF MAJOR ACTIVITIES AND ACHIEVEMENTS DURING THE PERIOD Major achievement during the year 2008-09 is the networking of all more than 200 computers earlier provided to all the faculty members and all the administrative sections, including a facility started in the Library. Now everybody has internet access. All faculty members and sectional incharges were provided official e-mail addresses. Steps are on to provide online access to more than 1000 medical journals to all computers and to use intranet for within-college communication. Other achievements department wise are as follows. ANAESTHESIOLOGY: The department organized the annual national level teaching program “EORCAPS” in September 2009. This nine day “Examination Oriented Refresher Course for Anaesthesia Postgraduate Students” is a well recognized, tremendously successful program, and over 200 students enroll every year. In addition, the faculty of the department achieved several laurels at national and international levels for research related activities. The KOP’s Award for best paper presentation in National Annual conference of the Indian Society of Anaesthesiologists, held in December 2008 at Jodhpur was won by one of postgraduate students. The best paper presentation in the “First National Obstetric Anaesthesia Conference” was also bagged by another postgraduate student of the department. BIOCHEMISTRY: The department has well established state of the art laboratories for clinical research, molecular biology, drug toxicology and plant research. Department plans to further develop advanced biochemical, immunotoxicological and molecular biological techniques such as PCR, RFLP and gel documentation for postgraduate students. Future research work includes: establishment of a cell-culture laboratory; role of medicinal plants in various diseases; therapeutic efficacy and toxicity testing of various drugs, chemicals, etc. BIOSTATISTICS AND MEDICAL INFORMATICS: The department was the incharge and intimately involved in erection and implementation of a network of more than 200 computers in the College. This was successfully accomplished during the year. The department is now pushing for online access to medical journals and intranet communication. This is in addition to authoring a book which is published in the US and has received excellent reviews around the world including one that calls it perhaps the most complete book on biostatistics. DENTISTRY: Computerized digital radiography was set up in the department. DERMATOLOGY: Screening of inmates of population from Tahirpur Leprosy home was completed as per guidelines from Hon’ble High Court to Dept. of Social Welfare; GNCT of Delhi.

FORENSIC MEDICINE: The department not only conducted more than 1600 medico-legal autopsies during the year 2008-09, but also provided expert opinion and court evidence in a large number of cases. During the same period, various faculty members acted as experts on various selection committees, delivered guest lectures and appointed members of the editorial boards. Faculty members of the department worked in the capacity of chairman/ members in large number of review/ postmortem boards constituted by different Govt. agencies like Delhi govt., and CBI. The department also successfully organized two medicolegal training programmes for doctors in the month of May 2008 and March 2009. MEDICINE: The department initiated Tobacco Cessation Clinic and Cardiomyopathy Clinic in the UCMS-GTB Hospital from Jun 2008 with emphasis on tobacco cessation and preventable cardiomyopathies. The department also took over the charge of Anti Retroviral Therapy (ART) clinic for treatment of patients with HIV/ AIDS from Feb 2009. A five-bedded Intermediate Coronary Care Unit (ICCU) was opened this year in CCU block to provide step down care for the patients of coronary artery disease. Addition of deep freezers (-20° and -80° C), automatic Gamma Counter, osmometer, and continuous glucose monitoring systems in the department was made. Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic ward (DEM ward) with 22 beds including an Endocrine ICU facility has been created along with Residents and other support staff. The department also took over the initiative of starting popular lecture series on common health problems for the benefit of common people. The lectures are meant to be delivered in vernacular language. MICROBIOLOGY: The department conducted two training workshops for laboratory technicians from 18 ICTCs and 4 blood banks under SRL, in EQAS in HIV testing and one seminar on the occasion of first Global Hand Washing Day. Gel documentation system was installed and the molecular lab was started for research purposes. Approximately five lakh samples from the hospital were processed in the eleven diagnostic sections of the department. Fifty four Students of B.Sc. (M.L.T.), B.Sc. (Microbiology), M.Sc. (Microbiology), M.Sc. (Biotechnology) and B.Tech. (Biotechnology) from other colleges and universities were trained and assigned projects in the department during the year. OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY: The department was selected for participation in international projects: International Multicentric Trial: CORONIS Trial; The International CAESER Study. Training programmes for the medical officers and paramedicals on cervical cancer screening by visual methods and also training programme for Skilled Birth Attendants under Director General Health Services were started. The department published three books this year including teaching guide to postgraduate student and one video atlas of surgical technique in obstetrics and gynecology which will benefit all practicing obstetricians and gynecologists. OTORHINOLARYNGOLOGY: The International Course on Middle Ear Reconstruction held by the department was very well attended and appreciated by all delegates. There were state of the art lectures and extremely informative demonstration of surgeries by international faculty. The department has added facility for Sialendoscopy (endoscopy of salivary ducts) and navigation system in endoscopic surgery for skull base, nose and paranasal sinuses to its existing facilities which is available in very few government setups. PAEDIATRICS: The department has maintained high standards of postgraduate teaching and training. First prize in the annual national conference of paediatrics was won by a postgraduate student of the department.

PATHOLOGY: Application of immunoflorescence techniques in renal and skin biopsies and immunohistochemistry on surgical and cytologic material on routine basis was initiated. PHARMACOLOGY: Several faculty and resident staff members significantly contributed to academic and research activities by way of publication of 8 research papers and 2 books, participation in scientific meetings and professional conferences, and presentation of research papers in oral and poster sessions. Several faculty members delivered invited talks and lectures. Dr. K.K. Sharma was elected President of the Indian Society for Rational Pharmacotherapeutic (2008-09) and Society of Pharmacovigilance (India) (2008-09). He was also nominated for the position of Associated Editor, National Academy of Medical Sciences (2008-12) and reviewer of two international journals: European Neuropsychopharmacology and Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behavior. A number of equipments have been acquired by the department like Digital Analgesio-/Hyperalgesia-Metyers, Digital Microplate ELISA Reader, Digital Animal Activity Monitor, Three Channel Physiograph, and Digital One-pan Balance. These have enhanced the quality of teaching/training of UG/PG students and research activities. PHYSIOLOGY: The department of Physiology is actively involved in teaching and research. The department is conducting research in the fields of: 1) Cardio-respiratory and lifestyle diseases, 2) Autonomic functions and stress physiology, 3) Cognitive neurophysiology, and 4) Respiratory and environmental physiology. The department also caters to the needs of hospital by performing various investigations like Pulmonary Function Tests, Autonomic Tests, and Evoked Potentials like BERA, VEP, NCV, and P300 on patients referred by departments of ENT, Paediatrics, Ophthalmology, Medicine and Anaesthesiology and Critical Care. A Yoga and Naturopathy Centre in the department, in collaboration with CCRYN (AYUSH, Ministry of Health, and Government of India), is actively involved in providing yoga therapy to patients of various diseases like diabetes, coronary artery diseases, hypertension, neurological problems, obesity and thyroid disorders as well as diseases related to women besides providing acupressure therapy to patients. SURGERY: Five new regular faculty members were appointed and the number of clinical units increased to four. Departmental Library has been expanded and now it has 95 books and journals along with e-learning material. A regular surgical skill training programme— Suture Practicum—is being conducted for all the batches of interns posted in the department. The department was awarded the first prize and trophy for the best overall presentation at monthly meetings of Delhi chapter of Association of Surgeons of India for the year 2008. 2. NEW COURSES/ SUBJECTS INTRODUCED

Teaching Module on Prevention and Control of Injuries was introduced in the MBBS Teaching Programme in Surgery w.e.f. the year 2008-09.

BIOCHEMISTRY Datta SK – PG quiz award 2nd prize in ACIBICON, Kolkata, 2008. Suke SG (Ph. D. Scholar) received (i) Travel Grant Award by Society of Toxicologic Pathology, USA to attend the 27th Annual Symposium of STP, San Francisco, United States, 22-26 Jun 2008, and (ii) Participation Grant Award by European Society of Free Radical Research to participate in the SFRR-E Summer School, 2008, Spetses Island, Greece, 30 Aug-5 Sep 2008. MICROBIOLOGY Dr. Sarika Jain won Dr. SR Sen Gupta – Dr. AM Saoji Memorial Prize for best paper in immunology for 2008 at the XXXII National Congress of IAMM, Microcon 2008 at AFMC, Pune, 23 Oct 2008. PAEDIATRICS

Dr Nivedita Dhingra won VB Raju Award (first prize) at PEDICON 2009, (46th Annual National Conference of IAP), Bangalore.

4. ACHIEVEMENTS IN SPORTS AND EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AT THE

UNIVERSITY/ INTER UNIVERSITY/ REGIONAL/ NATIONAL LEVEL

SPORTS University College of Medical Sciences has a glorious history in sports over the past many years. Students have been participating in various sports activities throughout the year and regular matches for football, basketball, cricket, table tennis and many other games are being organized throughout the academic year. Students indulge in the sports activities very enthusiastically; hence coaching sessions were organized for volleyball, football and basketball by coaches of national level to upgrade their playing abilities. The available infrastructure for sports in the college is of national level as the college has a 2 acre main playground with a basketball court, volleyball court, football ground, cricket ground and a gym. Further, for the upliftment of the sports infrastructure in the college, plans for two synthetic tennis courts and Indoor Stadium having squash and badminton facilities are under way and are expected to be completed in the near future. CULTURAL ACTIVITIES The annual festival of the college, ‘Ripple’ was held from 17-20th March 2009 and a mid-term festival, ‘Avalanche’, was held in Sept 2008. During these festivals, many cultural and literary events were held like Choreography, Western Dance, Fashion show, Dramatics, Debates, Quiz, Rock shows and Celebrity Night. There was whole hearted participation of students from many colleges of Universities in Delhi and outside Delhi. During the year, students of the college also participated in the festivals of other colleges and won many prizes and laurels.

The college choreography team under the leader ship of Mr. Mayank won the first prize in the festival of the college and at LHMC and the second prize at DCE. The Western Dance team under the guidance of Mr. Ali Sher won the 1st prize in the ‘Ripple’ and the 3rd prize at MAIT. The Fashion Show team of the college under the leadership of Mr. Sumit and Mr. Jatin won the first prize during the festival of School of Planning and Architecture.
