4. Solve : Second Hard Drive Not Recognised?

Preffered Answer:

A few days ago i disconnected my SECOND hard drive because i was experiencing "freeze up" when i would try to open a file on

the second drive.  This morning I opened up the machine and checked the jumpers.  They were set for master and slave.   I reset

them both to CS enable after deciding that the cable was an ATA cable that could be used for that.      Then when I restarted tje

machine it would not boot.   I went to BIOS and set the bboot sequence for drive 0 first then floppy, CD rom in that order.   After

several tries, the machine finally booted.  But it will not recognise the second drive.  It is not on "my computer" or on the device

manager.  I am running Windows XP Home ed.  Does ANYONE have any ideas???a   ThanksIs 2nd drive (Drive 1) shown in

BIOS?Renew........ide cables...........run diagnostics on drives

run chdsk on both drives!!or if

maxtor.....seagate.........visit main  websites for diagnostic software........Computer_Commando,  Thanks for the come back.  No the

second drive does not show on BIOS

Merlin_2,  The ide cable is new, and, as the  master is Seagate, and the slave is Maxtor, I will do as you suggest.  Thank YouHave

you tried placing the 2nd drive on the 2nd IDE controller and see if it's recognized there   Quote

...No the second drive does not show on BIOS...The ide cable is new, and, as the  master is Seagate, and the slave is Maxtor...

If not showing in BIOS, Windows won't see it, diagnostics won't work.  Check cable, check jumper settings, check power to drive.

 Then check it all again.

Tried finding diagnostic software on SEagate and Mxtor with no LUCK.   I guess i don't know what ito look for.  Cables check out ok.

And no, I have not yet tried second IdE connector.  Both CD drives are on that and i am HESITANT to mess with them.  1. Have

you set your jumpers back to Master and Slave?

2. Have you properly inserted the IDE cables?

-- Not all IDE cables feature a missing pin.

-- The red stripe should be aligned with Pin 1 of the IDE connector.Which hard drive loaded ok!Thank you all for your help and

suggestions.   I went in again, not expecting to find anything ,   but,  I found a loose pin on the power connector to the second drive.

Hallelujia,  that was it.  Every thing is working ok now.  The drives are on CS select.    I do have a question though;   everytime i

boot up, windows wants to run a chkdsk on both partitions of the second drive.   ANYBODY know what that is all about??   Thanks

again, love this forum,,      jcAre you properly shutting down Windows?

Preffered Answer:

Configuration:

Processor- Intel Dual Core E5700

GPU- Internal

Cooler- Stock Intel LGA775

RAM- 2GB Kingston 1333MHz / 2GB EVM Dynet 1333MHz

Mobo- Gigabyte GA G41M Combo

HDD- Seagate Barracuda 500GB

PSU- 400 W Circle Power Supply

Case: Some generic no brand case

OS- Windows 8.1 64 Bit

Have run with this config (except the new PSU) for a couple years without issues. For the past one month my PC has been

randomly turning off without warning or BSOD. Sometimes while booting and after running for hours at other times.

What I have tried so far:

1. Replaced the old PSU with leaked capacitors with a new one.

2. Replaced dead CMOS battery.

3. Cleaned the heatsink and re-installed it with new thermal paste. (Temps normal now while idle ~40 deg c and under load ~72 deg

c)

4. Reseated the Processor.

5. Tried one RAM stick at a time and both.

6. Checked the PSU voltages. Fan runs normally with GREEN and Black pins shorted. Here are the readings: All Orange Pins:

3.39v, All Red Pins: 5.37v, All Yellow Pins: 12.19v, Gray (Pin : 5.35v, Purple (Pin 9): 5.25v, Blue (Pin 14): -11.62. The Red pin

voltages have me a little worried because according to this article the max voltage for Red pins is 5.25v.

7. Tried breadboarding. PC ran fine for few hours but it runs fine for a few hours in the case as well. So I think breadboarding was

inconclusive.

The BIOS speaker beeps once while booting which indicates all is fine with my Award BIOS. One of my mobo standoffs is missing

but I put a cardboard between the mobo and case, so I don’t think the mobo is shorting on the back. Also cleaned the mobo as

much as I could. I have no overclocks or under volting. There seem to be no loose screws lying around. All cables are plugged in

properly. Another thing worth noting is that once it turns off, pressing the power button on the case won’t start the PC. I have to

UNPLUG the PC from the wall socket and plug it back in before it can turn on.

Someone help me out here. If more info is needed I'll add it.What make and model PSU did you replace with ? ?

Meantime i'd get a few standoffs from a shop....they usually give them away.Cooler- Stock Intel LGA775

I've seen these shear at the plastic standoffs (where the spring is).  Not visible until you remove it & visually inspect close up.  It

BREAKS the contact between the cpu, thermal paste & the cooler just enough so it's not in full contact which causes very fast

overheating & shutdown.

Sometimes you can tell because the fan speeds up at strange times.  Is you fan speeding up before before the shutdown? Quote

I checked the heatsink locks and they are properly locked in. The heatsink doesn't move either. There were never any temp spikes

and the CPU was stable at 72 Deg C with 100% load. And I have never noticed the fan speed up suddenly. Quote from: magnabolt

See if 1 screw won't fully tighten.  You won't even see a temp rise in a couple seconds.  The clue was the fan speed up for a couple

seconds at RANDOM times.  Since this is not HAPPENING, probably something else.Circle PSU ...with no info...i'm gonna pass on

6. Solve : Laptop Screen Tinted Green And Has Pink Bands?

Preffered Answer:

HI,

YESTERDAY i was PLAYING a game on my laptop with the power plugged in...while i was playing the display went black and when

it came back there were PURPLE bands vertically on the screen and it became tinted green....the intensity of the purple bands(

refer pic) decreases after a while to normal but the screen always remain tinted greenish...could you SUGGEST what could be the

cause of it?

model is ASUS n550jk

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Did you recently update drivers ? ?

If so from where ?Well i have recently updated the Nvdia drivers to the latest version...graphics card is Nvdia gtx 850...Then that's

likely your issue...

With laptops you should only use Drivers from the laptop manuf. site...But the purple bands appearing while the laptop is

booting...and then it just fades away after a while...should i try uninstalling the drivers?Yes.

Then install the proper ones from manuf. site...hello

i tried reinstalling the drivers from the site but the problem still remains :/  i just noticed that when the screen has a white background

then it turns back to the normal state for a second but after a second it flickers with pink shades eventually going green and the

same thing repeats when the screen is white...can see that the previous screen remains burned when the pink one flickers....

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]You sure it's the correct driver ? ?...

If so your vid chip may be failing...how old is this laptop ? ?Try the machine on an external monitor/TV and see if you get the same

issue on that.yeah i made sure that the driver is correct...the laptop is nearly 1.5 year old :/ it was plugged in when it happened..is it

because of some circuit? i am scared whether i would have to replace the display as it would COST a lot

When i used it on Tv everything is working fine..i dont have the same issuesThat seals it then...it's the display. So i would have to

replace the display?

7. Solve : Best Motherboard For My I5 4690K??

Preffered Answer:

Hello I wanted to buy a motherboard for my I5 4690K but I want to overclock it since I bought the unlocked version of this CPU, I

was told by this site that I should go for a Z87 or a Z97

http://innoreviews.com/motherboard/best-motherboard-for-i5-4690k/

However both are kinda EXPENSIVE around ~100-140$ is there no cheaper motherboard that allows me to overclock this I5?You

need a Z-series chipset to overclock a K series CPU, yes.  Other CHIPSETS do not have the ability to set a multiplier higher than

stock, or depending on the model, 4 "bins" above stock, that's reserved for the Z chipsets.

However, you don't have to buy EITHER of the models suggested on your link - in fact I'd generally recommend against an MSI

motherboard, I usually recommend Asus or Gigabyte.  Asus and Gigabyte models are AVAILABLE for around $100.

I'm hoping this link works and keeps my filters and SORTING, have a look here -

https://pcpartpicker.com/parts/motherboard/#c=89,99&sort=a8&page=1&m=8,14,18

Hope this helps

Firstly in any time of the day my compuiter can completely freeze and I cant do anything while this happens.

The only solution when it happens is to reset the computer by turning on/off the psu which harms my computer in a terrible way...

Secondly the other pretty similar thing that happens is also any time in the day it makes a strange sound (like im touching the point

of audiojack with my finger) and about 1-2 seconds later my monitor blacks out and FREEZES like before ...

Also cant do anything while this happens except reseting the psu...

I've already tried to switch gpu it still happens, I worked it with different rams in case that was the problem and it still happened...

*Also i have my cpu liquid cooler (corsair h60) is connected to the cpu fan. In bios settings it reads as ~4100-4200rpm which I dont

KNOW if is a problem, it just seems weird to me and maybe you know smth about it ...

The only ones remaining to check are the mb and the cpu.

I would appreciate any kind of help to find a solution thank you in advance!

About system memory

The motherboard has two dual in-line memory module (DIMM) sockets. Minimum memory size is 16 MB; maximum memory size is

512 MB. The BIOS automatically detects memory type, size, and speed.

The motherboard supports the following memory features:

168-pin DIMMs with gold-plated contacts

66 MHz SDRAM or 100 MHz SDRAM depending on system

Non-ECC (64-bit) and ECC (72-bit) memory

3 V memory only

Single- or double-sided DIMMs

Synchronous DRAM (SDRAM) improves memory performance through memory access that is synchronous with the memory clock.

This simplifies the timing design and increases memory speed because all timing is dependent on the number of memory clock

cycles.

NOTE: To function properly, SDRAM DIMMs must meet the Intel 4-clock, 66 MHz, unbuffered SDRAM specification for either 64-bit

or 72-bit SDRAM.

System memory (DIMM)

This motherboard uses only DIMMs. Sockets are available for 3.3 Volt (power level) unbuffered Synchronous Dynamic Random

Access Memory (SDRAM) of 16, 32, 64, 128 MB, or 256 MB.

This chipset does not support ECC. However, ECC memory modules may still be used, but the ECC function will not be available.

The DIMMs must be 3.3V unbuffered for this motherboard. To determine the DIMM type, CHECK the notches on the DIMMs.

NOTE: No hardware or BIOS setup is required after adding or removing memory

you are describing beeps which reflect using the improper type of Ram ......... I ask again exactly what kind of Ram are you trying to

install.  The full specification is necessary .

Let us know ,

dl65  thIBM 13M32734BCD-360Y Double-sided 256mb, 100MHz PC100 Registered ECC, 72 bit is is what im trying to make work

should work yes no ?I doubt you will see ECC on any mainboard for normal desktop PCs.

It is used in servers. Obtain the mainboard manual. It will tell you all you need to know.

ECC is 169 pins, normal 168.

ok everything seemed O.K. when I put it together but when I turn it on, the only thing that shows on the screen is

              "Monitor Self Test"

Im getting real mad    and really want to fix this problem soon!

I tried: clearing CMOS

reinstalling GFX card

reinstalling motherboard

reinstalling hard drive

but that doesn't help!

PLEASE email me: [email protected]   if you want to help.

Thank you.or reply to this threadSo when you turn it on nothing is working? Hard drive not spinning up? CPU fan not turning? Have

you any experience building computers? We need to know how savvy you are.  I had experience with building computers...

everything turns on except the monitor.... when I turn it on the only thing it has on it is that "monitor test screen" signAt startup tap

F8 repeatedly til it starts and CHOOSE Safe Mode. This will load generic video drivers. If the monitor is working congratulations that

means it's not the monitor.

Go to Control Panel Hardware and remove the vid card.

On reboot have your drivers ready for that vid card and re-install them.Disable onboard videocard if you are making use of an

expansion videocard.my keyboard doesnt seem to have POWER.... when I click to test if it works (by clicking one of the lock

buttons) the light doesnt COME on...So now there are 2 things known not to work. What kind of power supply and was it new?

Reseat everything and replug all connectors. It sounds like a mis-build.power supply = 400 Watts

I tried rebuilding the comp 3 or 4 times...hello?Are you using a ps2 keyboard?Buy a new keyboard, hook it up with the power off and

re-boot the machine.

Then try some of the things that have been suggested here.

possible.

In my attempts the computer does power on and allow the password to be entered, but then Windows would flash a message that it

had detected a problem and shut down to prevent damage, then a blue screen with print appeared and went away before being able

to read it.

I was able to pause a screen titled "Windows Error Recovery" that basically stated a recent hardware or software change might be

the cause and gave me the opportunity to click Launch Statrtup Repair, which I did and it flashed :

Collecting Crash Data...

Initializing disk for crash dump...

Beginning dump of physical memory.

Dumping physical memory to disc (here it rapidly displayed a couple numbers)

Then it returned to the blue screen again which I was finally able to pause. It basically repeated the message that Windows had

shutdown to protect the computer from damage and gave steps to make sure any new software or hardware was installed correctly.

It also stated that if the problem continues to remove any new software or hardware, disable BIOS memory options such as caching

or shadowing, and how to use Safe Mode to do so. However, there has been no new software or hardware added to disable or

remove.

I did think that I could start up in Safe Mode and go to System in the Control Panel to choose a restore point, but the computer

never allowed me to get that far. Even when starting in Safe Mode the computer cycles through the "Windows Error Recovery"

screen and then to the blue screen again. (At the bottom of the blue screen it has a caption, "technical Information" and displays

numbers like this:

***Stop: 0x0000000A  (0x000000F0, 0x00000008, 0x00000001, 0x8DC00003)

However, with each new cycle to the blue screen the Technical Information numbers are different.

Can anyone give me advice on being able to repair and restart the computer please?

Thanks in advance.Do you have the original installation media to perform a repair installation or system recovery with option to

protect personal data from deletion?

A repair disc or recovery disc is the direction I would go. If you dont have this then you will need to get one. Thanks for the advice

Dave.

I do have a recovery disc that we made when we first started the computer fresh out of the box. I had thought of using the recovery

disc, but I have never used one before and I was afraid that it might ditch the files. You mentioned an option to protect personal

data, how would I go about discovering if that option is available to me?

As I said, I have never used a recovery disc before, but I assume playing the disc may give that information?

Yes running that disc will show you. It wont just boot off the disc and trash your data. You should always be given a menu setup that

gives you choices, and one of the choices is always to abort or quit the operation. Generally most have 3 options:

( Full Factory Restoration ) = Wipes out all data and makes the computer back to fresh out of box state when you bought it new.

( Restoration Preserving Personal Data ) = Rebuilds Windows OS and your personal data that is at locations where personal data

should reside is left alone... some will keep your installed programs intact as a repair while others will completely replace Windows

with a clean install of it.

(Quit ) = Abort out of the restoration process

Some come with an option for:

( Repair Windows ) = Perform only a repair to Windows, do not wipe out installed programs or personal data. Thanks for the fast

response Dave!

I will try the recovery disc later and  post an update afterward. This will make my wife very happy if it works. I look forward to clicking

the topic solved box.Help!

Well, I researched HP customer support and decided before doing a system recovery, I would follow their 7 step troubleshooting

program for unlocking the computer titled "HP and Compaq Desktop PCs - Windows Vista Locks Up, Freezes, or a Blue Screen

Error Opens".

In a nutshell, the steps involved attempts to open Task Manager first with F4 key, then with CTRL+SHIFT+ESC keys to find a faulty

software program, use system restore both with and without Safe Mode through the F8 key, updating the BIOS through downloads

from HP, and the final step if all fails, the HP system recovery.

The steps to open Task Manager failed to work, continually pressing F8 did pull up the Safe Mode selection, but the computer would

not RESPOND to the Enter command; updating the BIOS or drivers wouldn't work because the computer fails to start. Surely the

two recovery discs will work then, right?

The HP directions for system recovery using recovery discs are simple enough as follows:

Use the following steps to recover the computer from a set of recovery discs (either CDs or DVDs):

1. Turn on the computer, if it is not already on, and insert the first recovery disc labeled #1.

2. After the first disc is in the drive and the drive is closed, turn off the computer by pressing and holding the power button.

3. With the computer off, disconnect all connected devices and cables such as the Personal Media Drive, USB drives, printer, and

fax. Remove media from drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware. Do not disconnect the monitor, keyboard,

mouse, and power cord.

4. Turn on the computer. The computer opens the Recovery Manager program.

5. By default the Recovery Manager will be set to run a System Recovery from the inserted recovery disc. Click Next.

6. On the screen that prompts for Microsoft System Restore select No, and then click Next.

7. The Recovery Manager gives you the option of backing up your data files. To do so, read Backing up your files.

If you do not want to backup your files, select No, and then click Next.

8. Read and respond to the screens as they appear. If a screen prompts for a disc, insert the next disc. In some cases, you may

have to repeatedly insert the same disc several times before the screen allows you to continue.

9. After the System Recovery is complete, the computer restarts and continues into Windows setup. Complete the setup screens

and wait until the computer finishes the setup. Then, turn off the computer, reconnect all peripheral devices, and turn on the

computer.

10. Before using the computer, update and protect your computer. Reinstall any virus and security software that was installed before

the System Recovery.

11. Reinstall any software applications that were after purchasing the computer, and any files that were backed up.

However, when my computer powered on with recovery disc 1 the screen showed "Windows gathering files" for a minute and then

the screen turned green. I left it on for two hours and nothing changed so I killed the power and tried it again 30 minutes later with

the disc still in. The computer "busy" light never flickered, the screen never revealed a message or sign of activity, after an hour I

shut it down again.

Does anyone know a way to get the computer to respond to the recovery process that I have not tried? While I am a basically a

greenhorn, I am still optimistic and willing to try most any option. Any response is welcome.  First, I forgot to include my computer

info: The computer is a HP Compaq Presario desktop model SR5025WM-B with 1024 MB PC2-4200 SDRAM and 250 GB 7200

Here's my latest update.

I powered on the computer with the System Recovery disc 1 still in the tray early this morning and after several minutes had passed

a black screen with this message appeared:

The file is possibly corrupt. The file header CHECKSUM does not match the computed checksum.

I have no idea what the message means. The recovery discs were made when the computer was new, and should have no reason

to be corrupted if that is what the message implies. Anyway, 15 minutes later another message replaced the first one, as follows:

DBOOT: Cannot boot from CD-Code 1e header checksum does not match the computed checksum.

Does this mean my Recovery discs are no good? Again I have no clue what it means, is there some other way to make an

unresponsive computer run a system recovery?

try changing the power supply if still not working maybe the ram or graphic card..

Im thinking its a ill hard drive, however a weak power supply can give the same symptoms when hard drive needs additional power

for writing and voltage is weak. Additionally a dirty optical drive can have failed reads, but I am feeling hard drive is my target right

now. Would you happen to have a healthy hard drive to install to it to test this out?

RAM problem ..... I dont feel this is the cause.

Graphic Card Problem ..... Trying to figure out how symptoms are related to a video card.  Hi Dave,

I hope you had an excellent Christmas holiday.

I have received a suggestion from a HP Support volunteer and would like to ask your opinion on his idea (in the following two

paragraphs) which is based on retrieving file data from the system, rather than recovery.

On a system of that age, I would suspect a failure has CAUSED the system to halt.  If the primary goal is to retrieve data, then I

would suggest that the System Recovery attempts be halted.  Then, IMHO, PURCHASE of device similar to this: SANOXY A12940

SATA/PATA/IDE Drive to USB 2.0 Adapter Converter Cable.

I prefer the kind that has a separate power supply to power the drive instead of trying to power it from the USB port.  Connect this

external SATA adapter to the hard drive of the problem PC.  Now on a different working PC, try to access the drive from the problem

PC to retrieve the important data and save it to another place, either a flash drive, DVD or an external drive.  IF Windows happens

to be on the new host computer and complains about ownership, there are solutions, but I prefer to then use a Live Linux on a CD

boot disk and retrieve the data.  Linux very seldom complains about ownership issues.

I figure if I could pull the data from the hard drive in this way, then I could always put a new hard drive replacement in the Compaq.  I

did a little research on the device he recommended and found that several reviewers claimed it caused fires when they used it;

however, other reviewers were impressed by it, except for the lack of any LED indicators to show whether the device was reading or

writing any data. If I attempt this, I will first search for another similar device that doesn't have fire hazard in its product reviews.

Does this idea SEEM feasible?

If so, can you offer any further advice on how to use such a product?

Thanks, and if you read this post before 2016 have a

Thanks for the advice Geek,

Happy Holidays and Best Wishes for the New Year!!! Hello,  Jusmeyallm,

Let me try to help you. Do you have a backup? Are you familiar with backup methods? Can you make a backup?

Apparently you do have another PC that can get on the Internet. Or maybe it is a tablet. So you have a good Internet service?

At this poet you may consider loosing all the data you have on the trouble PC. Unless there is a way to make an emergency backup

now.

Le's suppose the problem is just the hard drive,  bothering lee. If so, you can boot the PC C with either a CD or a USB stick. Then

you can copy any important files onto a USB flash drive. Or, if you have a network connection, send the data files to a remove

server.

Now then, once you have saved whatever data you can, you may attempt to install Vista again from the DVD onto the hard drive. In

some cases, a new install repairs errors of the hard drive and gives you a working system with a hard rave that is usable.

Experience has shown that in many cedes hard drive errors can be fixed, but at the risk of losing all of the data that had been saved.

That is sway I suggest some kind of data backup, if possible.

Of course, there might be another  problem,. A failing power supp  also can cause a system tog into a endless loop. But not very

often.

Thank is the best I can offer.

Well it has numerous errors that I can't recall all word for word. One that I get alot is "explorer has caused error....explorer will

It could be a virus but my antivirus doesn't find anything. I run Ad-aware all the time and it finds stuff everytime and I remove it.

What should I do to find the problem?

What are the results of the hard drive diagnostics? What about DOC's question about do you want to reinstall? Have you just run

Brittany:

Winoldap.exe is the indirect cause of your problem.  The direct cause is likely a Trojan Horse (which is a kind of computer virus).

Winoldap.exe is a legitimate process used on Windows 98-based computers (including Windows ME), which enables old MS-DOS

based programs.  This program is non-essential process to the running of the system and may be terminated if suspected to be

causing problems, but do NOT delete it.

Winoldap.exe is a process that is used by many Trojan programs.  These Trojans allow attackers to access your computer, stealing

passwords and personal data. Additional information is found here:

http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/files/Winoldap/index.php

My guess: The Trojan is causing problems, and possibly sending your passwords and credit card numbers and etc. to the person

who created it.  If your anti-virus program cannot find the Trojan, you may keep it from working by disabling Winoldap.exe in the

Microsoft System Configuration utility.  If you need help using MSCONFIG.EXE, let us know.

Best regards,

DocYes I need help to get rid of this. I'm not sure how to use the Microsoft System Configuration Utility. Can you please help me.

PS. Do you recommend taking it in to a shop and getting this problem fixed?

Brittany:

Sure, no problem.

2. Select Run from the Windows start menu

3. In the Run dialog box, type MSCONFIG

6. Scroll down and look for WINOLDAP in the list; when you find it click on it to remove the check from the checkbox

7. Click Apply and OK

8. When Windows asks if you want to restart, click Restart

Now WINOLDAP will not be started when you start Windows.  You may no longer be able to run some old DOS programs and

games.  You should also invest in a good anti-virus program and keep it updated frequently.

really two main things to look for: the native resolution and the "refresh" rate.

The native resolution is important: your graphics car may support up to 1600x1200 but if the native resolution is 1024x768 then

anything other than that will look, well, a bit rubbish really. Think about what your PC supports and what resolution you intend to

use. Most 17" TFTs will have a native resolution of 1280x1024.

For the latter part, I've used a pretty inaccurate term to describe what happens in the monitor - strictly speaking, the screen doesn't

refresh. It does, however, take a few milliseconds for the colour in a pixel to change. The less time it takes, the better - if it's too high

then there will be a blurring when playing faster games. Anything from 12-16ms should be fine for games, but if you can afford one

with a lower time then go for it.

Hope that helps.Another THING you should look at..whether it is PLASMA or not and contrast ratios  There a couple of good ones

out there...my choice is viewsonic, awesome tft. Be careful though with certain fps games..the particles and what not sometimes do

not like these kind of monitors...try to get a 500:1 or 800:1 contrast with a refresh of 75 or HIGHER and a aspect ratio of 1024-768 to

1280-1024  these can get pricey but remember you get what you PAY for!

21. Solve : 2nd Drive Not Appearing?

Preffered Answer:

I have a HD from a broken machine, that works fine, but I am not sure if it was wiped etc. I basically don't know what is on it, but I

know it works.

So to try and find out, I tried to install it as a slave drive on my friends computer. I did this, and changed the jumpers (I think) to the

CORRECT jumper settings to make it a slave.

The computer BOOTED as normal, and the little balloon in windows came up to tell me that new hardware was found. But when I

open "My Computer", only the master is there.

If I go into device manager, both the drives show, and appear to be enabled and working correctly.

What do you think I am doing wrong? I just want to be able to check what is on this Hard Drive. It doesn't work as a master, as I

don't think there is any kind of OS on it.

Even if it was blank, it should still be assigned a drive letter, and appear in "my computer" for me to explore, shouldn't it?

Can anyone help?

Many thanks for any replies posted.

Kop442000.How was the HDD reformatted?I am not too sure what you mean by this, but telling you a little about the history of the

drive should answer the question.

The drive was a slave in another machine and worked fine. One day I was TRYING to format main drive, but messed something up,

and I started getting an ERROR message on boot up that I couldn't overcome. That is all in the past now, as I am building a new

machine, but it has left me not knowing what (if anything now) is on the slave drive.

I don't know if I formatted that slave at all, or partially. I am pretty sure it doesn't have an OS on it.

If I try it as a master, I get error messages - I think basically saying it has no operating system.

Preffered Answer:

I have a Dell Dimension 2400 and suddenly my CD & DVD drives both aren't working. When I go to the Device Mgr, the CD has a

The Dell Support Center said to uninstall, then reinstall each one. I uninstalled the CD drive and it now says it is disabled. But when

I fo to enable it, it says Windows cannot complete the function. Haven't even tried to do for my DVD drive. Anyone have a clue

what's going on?Did you uninstall or disable? If you uninstall, you should no longer see that drive in device manager. Then when

you reboot, windows should detect ne hardware and reinstall it.I've done both. Right now both drives show a yellow exclamation

point.  In the Device Manager for both it says:

CD Drive -- Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or

DAMAGED. (Code 19)

I'm baffled. You may try running some registry tools, see if that fixes it. I use WinDoc and regclean. Not sure what the seniors on this

forum are useing. Can you elaborate? Not sure what a registry tool is. Is it an internal process or do I need to download

I saw a RegRepair and an EasyCleaner on the link above. Never used them but one is free and the other is a trial. Just watch the

trial stuff. Sometimes, they limit the SOFTWARE so bad, it is unusable.

To elaborate more, the registry contains configuration settings used by Windows for normal operation of programs, devices, etc.

Regedit is the built in tool used to manually edit the registry(not for the faint of heart). Other tools can be downloaded that

am I likely to see any damage done to my computer later on?

Thank youThe connection between Firefox and your magnetic screwdriver should  be practically non-existant.

What kind of problems do you have with Firefox?I KNOW that there wasn't going to be connection to firefox, but I was just

wondering would the magnetic screwdriver do anything to actual MOTHERBOARD, graphics CARD etc. I was wondering maybe if I

would come across hardware problem from the magnets in the future, because my computer seems alright, but has only been a few

hours after I used the screwdriver?

Thank you

There are magnets inside a pc case......power supply unit and cpu fan........

25. Solve : Pc Powers On But Dont Boot?

Preffered Answer: My PC is not booting up since 5-6 months... Today MORNING I tried to start it again and after 4-5 attempts itstarted nornally once but again after RESTARTING it stopped booting.

beeps.I don't think there's problem with PSU as I tested all rail voltageswith multimeter and they seem to be correct!.The CMOS battery is also new and has 2.95V.

My Ram sticks are clean and working properlyAlso HDD is Gr8 as it worked in morning!!I am not getting what the problem is!

I have :  Intel D101ggc MoBo              Pentium 4 2.66 GHz processor              2x Transcend DDR3 1gb RAM              Seagate 80 GB HDD              Iball ATX Smps 450Watt

PLEASE HELP ME OUT TO RECTIFY WHAT THE PROBLEM IS AND HOW TO FIX IT!! (pls only technicalreplies only!) Does your motherboard have any swollen or leaking capacitors around the CPU? Given its age it was likelymanufactured during the height of the capacitor plague.

Bad Capacitors can cause this if the power supply and hard drive is truly healthy. I am guessing you dont get a BIOSpost when it fails to boot which indicates a hardware problem ( Motherboard, PSU, or RAM )... More likely to bePSU, then Motherboard. Also to mention it could still be power supply issue as for if the power supply is weak at theinitial boot but then comes into voltage spec you would see the voltage as within the correct operating range, butbecause it booted with weak (undervoltage) at the initial initialization sequence of the motherboard it will hang at ablack screen. There is a timed window of opportunity for everything to boot within a timed sequence. If that sequenceis tripped up by a second or so undervoltage state it wont boot successfully. If your capacitors are healthy looking Iwould still SWAP out the power supply.

http://www.badcaps.net/My MoBo is 10 years old but it dont have any swollen caps!I have ANOTHER PSU but i guess it has LOW wattage ie (350Watt and my this PSU is 400Watt)and also i dontknow whether its working fine! the only way for me to test PSU is to check voltage....

can u suggest me some way to test the PSU without giving out money (actually i dont have any!) The problem withsimply testing voltage is the PSU is not under load...all it proves is continuity...See if you can borrow a known good one of 400W or better and swap it in there overnite...You'll know by morning.but the doubt i have is it booted once in morning  and that too without any error! andworked normally Doesn't matter...the PSU still needs to be eliminated as the culprit.i'll try to borrow a PSU and gethere back soon! Have you solved your problem yet?Sometimes and most of the time its a bad mother board.Staticcould have killed or just plain sitting could have killed it.Since you said it booted once Im going to assume its still working.I have an Asus board in a machine and if it sits for a long time it wont boot. What I had to do is reset the cmos by the jumper and remove the battery from the mother board. After resettingeverything and installing the battery it boots and runs now.Im not sure if this is your problem because I have a different mobo than yours.Mine is a ASUS P5E gaming edition. With an intel core2quad 2.5ghz 1333 fbs.8 gbs of pc 2100 DDR 2 ram.Good luck.
