SNELL SA2020 HELMETS FOR ADDED PROTECTION Additionally Stilo has made an improvement on the SA2020 Carbon Helmets: SA2020 ST5.1 Carbon FIA8859 helmets will be 50/60g lighter thanks to our new Puro Super Smooth technology unique to Stilo. This superior finish removes the need for lacquer, and also saves weight. A benefit to painters is the decal is no longer under the clear coat. This model now comes with a decal like our Zero’s and 8860’s.

Snell SA2015 vs 2020 …what’s changed? The Snell SA2020 testing requirements have changed a small amount and have now become more in line with the FIA 8859 Helmet Standard. Details:Increased velocity by 5-10% for impact testing on the 2nd hit across all shell sizes.Increased velocity from 5.7 to 6.0 m/s on the 54cm to 59cm size.Increased peak G threshold on the 54cm to 59cm size and 60cm-64cm size.

Ozone is a pale blue gas with a distinctively pungent smell, detectable by many people at concentrations of as little as 0.01 ppm in air. Ozone is formed naturally from diatomic oxygen by electric discharge or exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

Ozone is a powerful oxidant and has many industrial and consumer applications related to oxidation; it is used to deodorize air, purify water, disinfect kitchen tools and treat industrial wastes.

Although ozone is widely used in industry and commerce the ozone layer, a portion of the stratosphere, is beneficial: it prevents damaging ultraviolet light from reaching the Earth's surface. This same oxidizing property, however, causes ozone to damage mucous and respiratory tissues, so for safety and comfort purposes, we always recommend using the dryer and sterilizer in a space with adequate ventilation, and stay away from it while it is disinfecting objects with ozone.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

Why do I need a frontal head restraint system?Quite simply, head restraints save racers’ lives! If you are unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident during a race, your seatbelt is likely going to do its job and stop your body from moving forward. The head restraint will do its job and stop your head from whipping forward and placing enormous strain on your neck. A racer’s head is made heavier than normal by the added weight of a helmet. Frontal impact in a race car can cause basilar skull fractures which are often fatal and have taken the lives of some of history’s greatest racers. Keep in mind that it isn’t necessarily how fast you are going but how fast you stop that causes some of the worst injuries.

What is the difference between the different head restraint devices?Simpson offers a complete line of HANS Devices and Simpson Hybrids. The HANS is a yoke style head restraint and has a loyal following worldwide. The Hybrid is a backpack style device designed to stay with the racer upon entering or exiting the racecar. The Hybrid line features the Hybrid S, the only head restraint in the world that is tested and proven to work with 3-point OEM seatbelts, a plus for HPDE and Track Day participants. The HANS and Hybrids are popular with top level NASCAR, NHRA and WRC drivers. The difference in head restraint models comes down to weight – all HANS and Hybrid head restraints offer the same exceptional level of protection. We offer composite and carbon fiber models to service every price level. Simpson has historically worked to lower the price on head restraints to make this crucial piece of safety equipment affordable to all racers.

Do I need to use a specific seatbelt harness?No, but the configuration of the seatbelt harness is critical and some head restraints are tailored for use with a FHR-specific seatbelt harness. The shoulder strap mounting points should be even with the shoulders such that the straps make an angle of 10° to the horizontal. The mounting points must be equally disposed about the user’s centreline so that straps spread inward slightly from the mountings and around the FHRs. This helps to keep the straps firmly engaged with the FHRs.

How do I care for my head restraint?HANS and Hybrid head restraints are low maintenance but should be kept clean and dry. Extreme hot or cold environments should be avoided, and they should be kept away from petroleum products and other corrosives which can affect even the strongest composite materials and resins. Store out of direct sunlight and clean when needed with soapy warm water.

Simpson's Hybrid S model is currently the only Frontal Head Restraint proven effective for 3-point harnesses, and the device is also FIA and SFI approved. Additionally, in a partnership with Detroit auto manufacturers, the Hybrid S is third party tested to FMVSS208.

The Hybrid S allows high-performance driving Instructors, auto manufacturing test engineers, and other drivers with 3-point harnesses access to the advantages of head restraint safety.

The FIA Hybrid Head Restraint, in conjunction with a Snell or FIA rated helmet and a 3-point harness, reduced neck tension significantly when compared to a test with only a helmet and 3-point harness.

PROTECTION STATEMENT Simpson’s top concern is your safety. For your BEST protection on the racetrack, we suggest a full containment cockpit system that includes a full containment seat, Snell or FIA rated helmet, SFI or FIA approved head restraint and a 5, 6 or 7-point harness system.

For best safety practices, it is our recommendation that no one should unhook/disable the airbag system installed by the auto manufacturer or their authorized installer. Our outside experts in Detroit confirmed and require their test engineers to use the Hybrid S in conjunction with the airbag in a 3-point system. All of our experts believe the airbag and Hybrid S work in conjunction to increase protection in frontal crash events.
