CONGREGATIONAL BOARD PRESIDENT, JASON HERVIN’S REPORT

Dear friends,

Mission and Vision

Mission: God’s heart. Our hands. grace in ACTION.

Vision: A radically inclusive, multi-cultural community, who serve and lead together, with the love of Jesus.

For the board, these have been integral to many of our discussions and book studies. Our mission points to God’s transformation with “God’s heart,” while our vision points to the realization of the transformation in our hearts. This is a vision that will take time and work to live into. I’ve been thrilled to see Grace take these steps from sermons, individual study, to the launching of the Inclusion Team that Pastor Rachel Swenson is leading to help dive into what this means for the church to become a truly radically inclusive and multi-cultural community. Leading through uncertainty Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understand-ing; in all your ways submit to him and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6 It can, at times, be easier to give in to a desire to take action, respond, do what we think may be the right path rather than to trust in the Lord. Grace and the world at large are in a liminal period meaning we are in-between states. I’ve been impressed serving on the Board and how we come back to trusting in God or “God’s got this” as Pastor Chad Johnson often says. It was with this trust and an approach rooted in love, care, and compassion that the Board, Pastors, Finance Ministry and Safety Team led the church through our second year of COVID-19. This year we went from be-ing fully virtual to being able to meet in person again while maintaining an online presence for those unable or not yet ready to join in person. We continue to

closely monitor state, and federal guide-lines along with health trends to ensure we are following proper safety for our congregation.

Transitions As we reflect on this year, one common theme, in addition to being the second of the pandemic, was transitions. In Febru-ary we lost Laird Thornton, our beloved Choir Director, after over 25 years of service. In August we welcomed Amy Boers, another amazingly talented Choir Director. In the first quarter, we celebrat-ed Pastor John O’Neal’s 37 years of ministry at Grace, along with Debbie O’Neal’s transition from leading the GLC Preschool to Miranda Winter. This year we were also able to finally welcome Pastor Salvador Cossio to lead our Youth. I’d like to thank Pastor Chad who has led with love and respectful intention during each of these transitions, along with others not listed, to ensure Grace has passionate people who can help Grace live into our mission and vision.

Pastors Our pastors deserve extra recognition as they’ve done an amazing job leading our church through the pandemic and con-sistently delivering high-quality preach-ing and programming. With the re-opening this year to in-person worship our pastors have still delivered high-quality virtual services each Sunday. Pastor Chad and Pastor Rachel, on top of their sermons and regular ministries have also launched podcasts helping build depth and connection in our spiritu-al journey during the week. Pastor Sal-vador has quickly immersed himself at Grace and is shaping a compelling vision for the Youth Program.

Staff We have numerous staff who have raised the bar this year. Heather Hal-bakken and Ruth Coleman continue to do an amazing job helping the church run smoothly. Thanks to Kyle Byquist, Dusty Jones and Jakob Twedt along with Colin Togher and Brendan Togher, for helping our IT and media systems run smoothly. Thanks also to our musicians, singers, and directors; Amy Boers, Dean Krippaehne, Phil Wilkinson, Brian Tervo, and Jason Astrup along with the choir

and gospel band. The pandemic has placed a sustained heavier demand on IT, music, and other areas and we could not have delivered a strong online en-gagement without your extra efforts. Ministry Leadership Teams Grace has had 16 Ministry Leadership Teams where the board members are active liaisons. While the pandemic may have paused some of these ministries, we’ve seen many begin to come back online and look for more engagement as we look ahead. Please read the reports by each of our areas of ministry within Grace, our community, and around the world. Grace Children’s Center GCC continues to be a blessing for the community throughout the pandemic. This year GCC is ending the year finan-cially doing very well. The GCC board and the GLC board have hired Jackie Caoagdan and Leticia Gomez as Co-Directors of GCC after Royale Lockhart, their previous Director, decided to move to another opportunity. Jackie has been with GCC since 2007 and Leticia was the GCC Office Manager. We are excit-ed about what the future holds with Jack-ie and Leticia leading the way. GLC Preschool Miranda Winter has taken the reins as Director of the School following Debbie O’Neal’s retirement. The school has begun meeting in person this year, after being virtual in 2020. Miranda’s focus is to look for ways to grow the school and serve its surrounding community. Global Partners I encourage you to read about the great work God is doing through our Global Partners including Pastor Titus in India. I’ve been blown away that despite per-sonal losses, including the loss of his wife due to COVID-19, he is still spear-heading many service projects including the construction and launch of the grace in ACTION Center in India. Please read about this and other work our partners are doing worldwide. Board Finally, I’d like to thank the GLC Board members and Finance Ministry Team.

Page 4

Coming in fresh to the board this year, I quickly felt deep gratitude for the love, commitment, and collaboration of the Board. I’m thankful for all that the Board has accomplished and excited about 2022. I’d like to thank Paul Marth for his leadership of the Finance Ministry, along with Angie Cadwell for her service as Budget Manager and Diane Nelson for taking on that role now going into 2022. Thanks also to Mark Walker for his many years of leadership at Grace and his mentorship this past year. I’m thankful to the Board and the Congregation for al-lowing me the opportunity to serve as President. With love and thanks, Jason Hervin 206-475-8583 [email protected]

PASTOR CHAD JOHNSON’S MESSAGE Grace and peace to the wonderful body of Christ named Grace Lutheran Church! When I pause to reflect back on the year gone by and then lean forward into what lies ahead, I think on three things that we do together as church: Trust steadi-ly in God, hope unswervingly, and love extravagantly! Yes, these three make up so much of what we have been and what we are called to be as the church on earth. I pray you have experienced all three in our life together. 1. Trust steadily in God In the midst of a continually disrupted world, our ultimate trust rests in God. I think we see this best in our call to deep worship. In 2021, as we brought online and in-person worship elements to bear, we saw God continuing to shape and form us as God’s people. Everyone has experienced open moments of vulnera-bility as we navigate the new worship patterns of the entire community. It is rare for us all to gather in one space, for

one moment, in any given week. And yet, God is moving us together in cyber-space and in person. All are offered a space and place to gather, equip, and send. As a pastor who is used to gather-ing predominantly in person, feeling the weekly rhythm and energy and connec-tion of people, rallying together in story, and then heading out with a bounce in the step to take on life’s challenges, the pace and rhythm feels quite different. I miss our whole body being together. I miss the regularity that we used to have in seeing people together. I miss the worship center being full to the brim. (The current trend in the US church is that only 50% to 60% of those who were worshipping in person prior to the pan-demic are worshipping in person today. That same trend holds true here at Grace. I hope we can break through that in our future.) In the midst of this missing element, we are called to trust steadily in God. Today, because of the both/and of both online and in person worship opportunities, more are able to be supported in worship life here at Grace. (Please see the worship stat report in this Annual Report.) This new and different way of working, worship-ping, and engaging, all while doing both/and, makes for challenging and full days. We are so thankful for the tools and wonderful people with talents, gifts, and abilities to make it all happen. More so than any other element in this world, I believe worship most connects and grounds us in who we are and whose we are. Worship is the true north for our lives. As we gather in a myriad of wor-shipful ways into the future, I pray that trust and faith in God is nurtured and grown for all. 2. Hope unswervingly Yes, this is who we are. The church, built on the resurrected life of Jesus, always hopes unswervingly. We don’t let the world crush our hopes and dreams. We don’t let voices that seek to conquer and divide tear us apart. We don’t give our hope over to any force that would seek to destroy it. We live in hope. We die in hope. We bet our lives on hope. We build on hope. We bring hope to the hopeless and despairing

because of hope. God counts on us to live with that hope in all we say and do. A people who hope unswervingly bring so much life to this world. This church and this greater community need us to live with a bold hope for tomorrow. I have both seen and heard this hope through your conversations, your pray-ers, your serving together, your discern-ing questions, and your rolling up the shirt sleeves to make a difference. We need even more of that in 2022. As you are able, please draw others into that same hope in which you are living so that more and more can experience it. It truly matters! Whereas we have been challenged relationally through these now COVID years, we can rise together in hope through thriving relationships. We can show up in a myriad of ways for friend and neighbor. We can lend our vision, voice, and passion in all we say and do. For our new staff leadership this year, Amy, Miranda, Colin, Diane, Jack-ie, Leticia, and Pastor Salvador, thank you for being a beacon of hope in our midst. 3. Love extravagantly Yes, go after a life of love as if your life depended upon it – because it does! I so believe this. Life and love are going to win. God’s love will never die out. That flame will burn bright and it burns even brighter when we give ourselves to loving extravagantly. I see that love at Grace in all who serve and lead togeth-er. The list of the saints here is tremen-dous. For those who show up early and stay late – we feel your love. For those who call and pray – we feel your love. For all those who give themselves to being a radically inclusive and multicul-tural community both here and out there in the world – we feel your love. For those who practice, create, design, set up, take down – we feel your love. For those who seamlessly move around in doing the list of hundreds of things it takes to have a church that thrives in grace – we feel your love. For the teach-ers and directors and care-givers of our childcare and school – we feel your love. For those who open doors, ask hard questions, move people to connection – we feel your love.

Page 5

For board and staff who faithfully discern and live into God’s vision and mission with us – we feel your love. For those who bear gifts of laughter, light-heartedness, pure joy – we feel your love. For those who practice loving kind-ness, enduring patience, and tender care – we feel your love. For those who pour out the financial blessings that they themselves have received so that we can be the church together – we feel your love. For our community partners and agencies that we are so blessed to walk alongside and engage in discover-ing God together – we feel your love. For all of our outreach partners, who multiply everything ever given to both save and redeem others – we feel your love. Ultimately, yes Jesus we feel your love! In 2022 we go after a life of love with vigor, as though our lives depend upon it, because yes they do!

All three of these are acts of pure grace. Thanks be to God. I promise as one of your pastors here at Grace to live each of these every day, counting on God to show the way. Even when the challeng-es are great, especially when the chal-lenges are great, may we live this way together.

God loves each of you, and I do too.

Pastor Chad

PASTOR RACHEL SWENSON’S MESSAGE

Grace and peace to you all, dear siblings in Christ!

Another year gone – hard to believe! The year 2021 started with so many sim-ilar challenges to 2020. Another Lent from our homes. Another Easter without the large, joyous gathering we were all aching for. And yet the start of 2021 felt totally different from the year previous. Holding out hope for vaccines to soon make their way through our communi-ties, we waited with baited breath as we watched the world resurrect. And in the waiting, we learned.

We learned how to do Easter in new and celebratory ways that still celebrated the

resurrection. Big thanks to our whole crew who made our very first Easter Drive Thru and Egg Hunt a success! While we couldn’t hug and dance inside, we threw a party anyways. From every-one who hung eggs in their front window to the Youth Group who so tirelessly gathered food for the Des Moines Area Food Bank and donations for Orfanatorio Emmanuel. From Dusty Jones and Jakob Twedt who set up tents so we could celebrate the risen Christ regard-less of the weather to Brooke and Drew Nelson who made sure everyone who found an egg was awarded a prize. And from everyone who stayed longer in line just to say hi to volunteers and to listen to our incredible bells, who we thank for playing and setting the literal tone for a celebration. It was a joy and a balm after being apart for so long.

On the same day, we were learning new ways to mark the passing of Christ, set-ting watch through our very first Virtual Prayer Vigil from Holy Saturday through to Easter Morning. Members of our con-gregation covered the entire time in prayer, keeping watch during the time we remember Christ’s presence in the tomb. Deep and abiding thanks to Grace Prayer Support and their leadership in holding space for such a beautiful prayer practice.

Over the spring, a small and strong num-ber of our community started gathering every month to continue the process of learning and living into our Mission and Vision statements. Gathering over Zoom, this group holds our statements close to our hearts as we vision where God is calling Grace Lutheran Church in this time and space. Dubbed the Inclusion Team, our work focuses on ways we can concretely move into become who we say we want to be in our Vision state-ment. In this on-going work, deep, com-munal gratitude to Anita Chiarenza, Pas-tor Chad Johnson, Harriet Thomsen, Jason Hervin, Jeff Barstow, Katelyn Bar-nett, Maddie Barnett, Nicole Flores, Quentin Flores, Brian Patton, Pastor Salvador Cossio, and Jenna Carodiskey -Wiebe for all we are striving to do to-gether. The whole team also owes a big

thanks to Lindsay Lombardo for her presence and leadership in the begin-nings of our work together this year!

While the year started out distanced, it was such a joy to return to in-person and we started off with a bang! We contin-ued, and are continuing, to learn how to be church in a new, Covid-reality. While quarantine ended, COVID-19 remained and we learned how to gather together in ways that kept our neighbors safe while also recognizing the impact of gathering together in the same space. Worship was up and running by June 6 and it made this pastor’s heart soar to preach and lead with others in the room again. We learned how to safely and meaning-fully engage again in communal bap-tisms, funerals, and weddings, saying hello and goodbye to many of Christ’s beloved children, ever leaning on the promise of new and abiding life in Christ.

This year, we learned new ways of gath-ering our children together. In July, we celebrated the return of Vacation Bible School with our ‘Christmas in July’ theme. Since we couldn’t celebrate in the building in 2020, we celebrated two Christmases this year! With the newness of returning to in-person, we attempted our first ever hybrid VBS, offering an online option for those still wary of join-ing in person. We had six kiddos and their families join us virtually from Seattle and Spokane, broadening our communi-ty geographically in ways we’ve never been able to do before! On site, we had 56 kiddos join in on the fun, celebrating the coming Christ-child through game, song, and craft. A big thank you to all our leaders who made the week possible - Kristin Abbott, Rand Barnard, Shelby Chatterton, Karlene Chavez, Anita Chi-arenza, Diego Cossio, Camila Cossio, Veronica Zermeno, Sandi Denoff, Vicki Fann, Michele Larabee, Mary Matt, Stephanie Nichols, Roger Siddall, Deb Smith, Brendan Togher, Colin Togher, Madison Baker, Jamie Colbert, Amber Sellars, Reanne Sellars, and Stella Klein. You all are rock stars!

Over the summer, our Young Adults

gathered for fun and fellowship around

the deliciousness of backyard BBQ. With

Page 6

varying schedules, worries over the vi-rus, and all sorts of emotions swirling, it was relief and renewal to see each other and learn names and faces of folks who hadn’t been able to see each other in so long. Big thanks to Emily Jacka and Mi-randa Winter for hosting and coordinat-ing! In the fall, we moved much of our focus to what in-person gatherings felt viable and safe to rekindle. But that doesn’t mean the learning stopped! Women’s Bible Study started up again in October, with big thanks to Carol Ervin’s leader-ship that first session, and has been meeting on the third Saturday of the month since. We celebrated the holidays with a cookie swap and look forward to beginning a book study together in Janu-ary. If you would like to join us and are looking for a book, let me know and we’ll make sure to get you added to our grow-ing contact list and gathering news!

With many still worshipping from home, much of our learning this year has taken place during our education hour, both upstairs and down, which took on differ-ent formats and focuses. This year we launched Good News Crew – our chil-dren’s ministry education hour – and Good News Blast – a weekly newsletter that encourages faith engagement at home and as a family unit. Every Sun-day, we watch a short clip or two that launches us into the day’s topic, partici-pate in craft and/or movement time, and leave ready to spread the Good News of Christ to the whole world! Thanks to Pastor Salvador, Stephanie Nichols, Susan Johnson, Lauren France, and Michele Larabee for their leadership, partnership, and all around compassion and grace in leading and learning along-side our kiddos and youth group. Thanks also to our Inclusion Team who took on the last few Sundays of upstairs educa-tion hour and who will be leading us through a promising series in January and February.

As Advent and Christmas approached, we learned new and safe ways to gather together so that we could celebrate the arrival of the Christ child in community. Huge thanks to Miranda Winter, Haley Mellinger and Kimberly Mellinger who

led our Dancing Angels this year. Thanks also goes to Brian Tervo and our Bell ensemble and to Jason Astrup and the Kids of the Kingdom choir for making sure our celebrations were festive, marked with music and dance like any great holiday should be! As we move into what 2022 has in store, we continue to learn. We continue to learn what it means to live as the most loving church on the planet and how best to protect our neighbors from virus-es, hatred, and pain. We continue to learn what it means to be on the corner of Kent-Des Moines Road and 24th Ave and what God is calling us to in our very specific and yearning context. And we continue to learn what it means to be God’s people in God’s world. May all our learning this year, new and continuing, be marked by God’s grace, led by Christ’s example, and fed by the Spirit’s presence.

Peace, life, and love to you all, Pastor Rachel

PASTOR SALVADOR COSSIO’S MESSAGE It was June 7 when I was blessed enough to start working as a Youth and Family Pastor. Tessa Krippaehne and Shelby Chatterton, our 2021 summer intern, were doing an excellent job com-ing up with different and fun activities. I really appreciate the job Tessa did, and I was fortunate enough to watch how amazing Shelby was working with the youth with fun activities every week (hiking, climbing, campfire, etc.) After a different and challenging 2020 and 2021, we were able to start in-person meetings in the Youth Room with all the security and protective measures to be able to gather inside the building. The youth have been creating a great family bond during these past months and I can see how important the love and opportunity to be involved in church activities is for them. They are not only here to have fun, but to support the activities of Grace

through decorating, cleaning, and mov-ing boxes, etc. I have great joy in announcing that we will have our first Mexico mission trip meeting and will announce any updates regarding COVID-19 restrictions. I am also starting to schedule retreats for 2022 hoping that we can start doing all of the amazing activities that the youth and church love. This past November we organized and participated in the “Thanksgiving Bas-kets Giveaway” along with Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. This was our first 2021 outreach activity, where the goal was to collect 100 baskets between both churches (50 per church) to help 100 families and GLC was amazing. We collected around 90 baskets and were able to help families from Pacific Middle School and Mount Rainier High School. Nine Hispanic families, where the par-ents only speak Spanish, came to church to receive their baskets. I was able to share in Spanish the many amaz-ing ministries and activities they could attend at GLC. In addition, it was great starting fall activ-ities, working with the youth group with Devos for the seniors and teaching, and different activities for the youth group. I thank the amazing advisors Kimberly Mellinger, Pat Togher, Stephanie Nich-ols, Thomas Perez, Courtney Mellinger and Thalia Perez, who have committed to be there for the youth. And if you feel the call to have a great time while you help the youth as an advisor, join us, you can be part of their lives too. I also want to thank Kimberly Mellinger and Cecilia Hoffman who have been amazing baris-tas every Sunday with the coffee cart. It has been so great to work and serve along with Pastor Chad and Pastor Ra-chel, doing pastoral care, assisting in Sunday services, and having the great joy of preaching. They are a huge bless-ing to GLC. In addition, special thanks to Ruth Coleman, Heather Halbakken and Miranda Winter for being so support-ive with the youth group and me. Pastor Salvador

January 2022 Dear Beloveds in Christ,

Grace and Peace to you through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

For many of us, 2020 and 2021 were difficult years. Isolation, fear, anxiety, depression, job loss, loneliness, family disputes, illness, political polarization, and grief all played a part in making this a challenging time. On top of these struggles, many of you are concerned about your congregation. Your concerns might include wor-ship attendance, budget matters, employee retention, leader recruitment, COVID concerns, and building maintenance. I feel all of this. All of these things weigh on my heart, as well. And, truthfully, difficult conversa-tions will be needed by congregations and councils regarding all of these things.

But there are other questions and other topics to grapple with, too. Perhaps even more important conversa-tions. Author and consultant Susan Beaumont writes:

“A congregation that is not growing is dying. However, growth won’t necessarily be reflected numerical-ly. It doesn’t have to involve more bodies in worship or in membership, or more dollars in the budget. It should involve growth related to the congregation’s proximate purpose: deepening spiritual practices, integrating kids with special needs into the life of the congregation, strengthening intergenerational connections, and the like. A leader trying to move an organization away from general aspirations about growth, toward a more specific purpose, can ask these questions. Growth to what end; what will growth accomplish that is central to our mission? Who will benefit from growth? Is growth possible or even desirable? Where will growth come from? (How to Lead When You Don’t Know Where You’re Going: Leading in a Liminal Season, p. 14.”

These and other questions are important to talk about and wrestle with – especially when the future looks so different from the past. I truly believe that a vital congregation is one with a sense of purpose, deep spirituality, and engagement with their neighborhood. Yes, sustaining a ministry takes money and people. But it is much more important to have meaning and purpose, to continue to talk about what God is calling for you to do and to be, and to participate in what God is already doing around you and within you.

I am excited and hopeful for our future together. I trust that the hope I have is not false or illusory. This hope is not based on some “pie in the sky” optimism. Instead, I am trusting that through all things, the God who comes to us as a baby still comes to us in our need and our distress. While the world might not always be as we would like it to be, I have hope that the Holy Spirit is dancing us into a new world.

I am so thankful for all of you – for your grit, your determination, your faithfulness, and your willingness to en-gage with one another – even when you might disagree. In this Epiphany season, may God continue to reveal Godself – through you and through your neighbors. And, as Paul writes in Romans, “Now may God, the fountain of hope, fill you to overflowing with uncontainable joy and perfect peace. And may the power of the Holy Spirit

continually surround your life with super-abundance until you radiate with hope!

WORLD HUNGER

People of Grace -- thank you for your ongoing support of world hunger and disaster initiatives. Grace Lutheran Church has decades long commitment to supporting global food security initia-tives. In 2021, our World Hunger dona-tions, totaling $47,829, were directed to the ELCA World Hunger projects. In addition, people of Grace contributed $17,918 to world disaster relief primarily supporting the Haiti earthquake recov-ery. “ELCA World Hunger works in more than 60 countries around the world. The strength of our international work is in the relationship between the ELCA and its global companion churches and part-ners. These churches and organizations understand their local context best, and this means they can responsibly identify their communities’ greatest needs and the most appropriate responses. We walk together with our global partners to develop strategies to reduce the impact of hunger and poverty. Together, we achieve things on a scale and scope that we never could do otherwise. Your gifts to ELCA World Hunger pro-vide international grants for relief, advo-cacy, and sustainable development pro-jects. In partnership with global compan-ion churches — Lutheran church bodies around the world — and other Lutheran partners, such as The Lutheran World Federation, and ecumenical partners like Church World Service, these grants sup-port sustainable development work in areas related to healthcare, income gen-eration, food security, clean water and education — addressing hunger right at the root causes.” At Grace Lutheran Church we typically focus on how our contributions to ELCA World Hunger support the agency’s im-pact on a global scale; however, there are many projects domestically that ad-dress hunger. To summarize from the ELCA.org website: “In the United States, the Caribbean, and U.S. Virgin Islands, ELCA World Hunger works with individuals and congregations

to raise awareness and address hunger and poverty in these key areas: Commu-nity Development…Networking…Education…Advocacy”. ELCA depends on and supports local congregations and volunteers to build “healthy, sustainable ministries”. ELCA offers grants, net-working opportunities and educational resources and events to equip congrega-tions to be successful in developing hun-ger focused programs in their local area. Peace, GLC World Hunger Team

SHORT-TERM MISSIONS

UGANDA. Reaching Out With Hope, with generous support from GLC, has been able to make significant progress during the past year despite challenges posed by COVID-19 restrictions in Ugan-da. Hope Hospital added more profes-sional staff to meet a growing number of patients served and procedures per-formed. Most notable is the number of local women giving birth at the facility and then following up with visits for neo-natal care and inoculations.

The COVID-19 virus presence in Ugan-da has also meant loss of jobs and schooling, particularly for young women. The hospital's staff social worker has organized training at the facility, for these local women/girls to provide the skills for future success. There are cur-rently 42 enrolled in both hair salon and tailoring classes with plans to organize small businesses upon completion of training. The Hope Chapel facility has been useful in providing space for train-ing and other community needs in addi-tion to regular worship.

We continue to offer computer mainte-nance support to two supported schools, now done remotely.

Donations have made possible facility upgrades including a perimeter wall to enhance security. Additional upgrades to the operating theater are planned to make C-section procedures possible.

The team at Reaching Out With Hope here and in Uganda appreciate the faith-ful and generous support from GLC. You are making a difference in Uganda! EL SALVADOR. We continue to support Pastor Matias Bonilla at the school. A member of our congregation, along with some other private donors, funded $25,000 to pay off the van that is needed to transport students at the school. We also donated funds to pay for retaining walls to help with erosion in the back of the church. We continue to support the work of the teacher as well. GUATEMALA. We continue to support El Refugio Shelter for women and chil-dren who have endured severe domestic violence and need a place to be safe and begin the healing process. The women are taught life skills and the chil-dren that are school age get to attend school in a safe environment. Debbie O’Neal was the leader of the women’s ministry that would go to Guatemala yearly then bi-yearly with several women from GLC. Before Debbie retired, we were able to send a donation to the shel-ter. Debbie plans to continue leading mission trips

INDIA. Pastor Titus continues to do amazing work in the ministry. The year 2021 was a devastating year for him, his family, and community. No one could have imagined the loss of his wife Arathi, due to COVID-19. Only through God’s guidance through the valley of the deep-est of griefs, and through your loving prayer and financial support, has life been possible. This fall, the new three-story grace in ACTION center was com-pleted and dedicated. This is an amaz-ing gift that will host the women’s sewing center, after school tutor programs, a new Bible College, music and arts pro-gram, Aids recovery and support, medi-cal programs, and shelter for women in need of family support. In addition, a newly purchased food truck is providing weekly support to neighboring villages

and went to work in assisting recovery from the floods and cyclones. Truly a fishes and loaves ministry. All of this work is supported by a newly formed non-profit, hoperisingforindia.org, partner churches, and Grace Lutheran Church.

HAITI. Wonderful support and work con-tinues to take place through our ongoing child sponsorship program and with di-rect giving towards htflive.org. The Hai-tian Timoun Foundation has been a steady presence in the midst of one of the most difficult years for the people of

Haiti. It is true that no one does life alone and only together will people be raised towards full life.

Thank you to each and every one who goes above and beyond through acts of generosity for these outreach partners and more. All thanks and praise be to God. Shelley Hartman

HAITI STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS Danette Miller, Executive Director of the Haitian Timoun Foundation, wrote the following, “The situation in Haiti has de-volved into a humanitarian crisis of epic proportions. The pandemic placed a strain on the already weak health sys-tem, continued civil unrest and political instability resulted in the brutal assassi-nation of President Jovenel Moise this summer. In August, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit in the southwest area of the country killing over 1,500 people, damaging homes and businesses, and making major roads impassable. Three days later, a tropical storm passed through the same area, exasperating humanitarian needs in the country. More recently, Haitian gangs have cut off criti-cal fuel supplies for the country, forcing banks, grocers, and schools to shut down, increasing food insecurity, and making life extremely difficult for every-one, especially for our partners and friends there.” Grace Lutheran Church continues to be an extraordinary congregation who loves

and cares for the people of Haiti. This year, despite our country’s challenges which pale in comparison to Haiti, a total of 59 Haitian students have been spon-sored for the 2021-2022 school year. Through the Haitian Timoun Foundation, Grace sponsored 19 students at Lekol Sen Trinite school and 9 specially-abled students with Wings of Hope. In addition, Grace is continuing to provide scholar-ships for 31 students in the Hope for Kidz program through Reciprocal Minis-tries International. Your continued gen-erosity is truly a blessing to all of them. A special thank you goes out to Phyllis Williams for all her effort running the Haitian Student Scholarship Program for so many years. She has been and will continue to be a blessing to so many Haitian children. We continue to pray for peace and hope to all Haitians, especially the children. Thank you to all who sponsored Haitian students this year. You have truly made a positive difference in their lives.

LUTHERAN WORLD RELIEF QUILT & KIT MINISTRY Grace Lutheran Church LWR Quilters were able to begin quilting sessions again in September 2021 after COVID-19 interrupted work together for 18 months. It has been a joy to return to the ministry for service and fellowship. On September 23, we were finally able to reach the milestone of 11,000 quilts.

That quilt is now displayed in the Fellow-ship Hall and will be sent with a future shipment. In November, we packed and sent 109 quilts, including the ones we had finished before March 2020. That brought the total number of quilts made for LWR to 11,024 since the ministry began in 1968. School Kits and Personal Care Kits were not included in projects as it has been difficult to shop for supplies and assem-ble kits, and a new coordinator is need-ed. The gift of a quilt is a way to wrap people in God's love. LWR can use all the quilts we can make. We look forward to con-tinuing to grow the ministry in 2022 and beyond.

SOCIAL CONCERNS grace in ACTION Projects Similar to last year, grace in ACTION projects were slow due to the pandemic. We had some follow-up work on projects that we had done in previous years. There were three projects we completed this year that involved significant effort. We helped a disabled man that needed to access his yard for yard work. He was partially paralyzed due to brain cancer at age 18. We helped him with some of the yard work but also provided him with two paver ramps plus railings to help him access the upper areas of his yard. He is a very delightful and positive person and was very appreciative of the help. He loves being able to more safely do his yard work.

Our second project involved help for an elderly lady who did a good job with yard work but needed help with major weeds between her fence and the road. This project was referred to us by the City of Des Moines.

Our third project was helping a Grace family recovering from the death of a family member. They live in their home of many years where the children were raised. The home is 100 years old and needed some upgrades. We repaired and updated the single bathroom and added a new deck that was needed for safe access to the back yard. There will be ongoing work next year. Al Vraspir

Angel Tree Thank you for your gifts to Angel Tree! Grace helped children stay connected with their families through Virtual Angel Tree™. We were able to share Christmas joy with over 150 chil-dren this year.

2021 saw many starts and stops for Friend to Friend, throughout the year with the Pandemic. We used our plat-form to support public health by provid-ing information on CDC recommenda-tions to our volunteers and seniors we serve. In fact we are requiring all of our volunteers be vaccinated against COVID- 19 prior to resuming in person visita-tion. We continue to match volunteers with seniors to combat senior isolation and loneliness and welcome new volunteers. We are grateful to our Grace members like Harriet Thomsen and Susan and Rodger Siddall, that have supported us in this work through time, talent, and financial support. FtFA received a grant from DSHS that supports our new virtual connections program in nursing homes. Our Virtual Connections Program is currently in three local communities. MOBILE DENTAL VAN This will be the last report inasmuch as the dental van program at Grace is no longer operating. Through no fault of our own, the program was terminated because of the onset of COVID-19 pandemic, the loss of the services of the dental van from Medical Teams International, the clinic space at Grace and our professional and volun-teer staff. Thank you to our volunteers. Sandra Bollinger, Dorothy Smith and Sydney Smith, Coordinators

DES MOINES AREA FOOD BANK The year 2021 has been another chal-lenging year at the Des Moines Area Food Bank. Over 1.4 million pounds of food were distributed through a variety of programs. First, the food bank continued the strict safety protocols that allowed them to stay open for in-person service rather than simply adopt a “generic food box” drive-through model. As a result, over 400 families per month had more choice, received more food, and could take advantage of fresh options such as produce, bread, meat and dairy. At the

same time, the food bank allowed unlim-ited visits and greatly expanded hours for produce, bread and prepared foods. For clients more at risk of contact with others, the food bank offered on-line ordering for Groceries-to-Go and ex-

panded its home delivery program, serv-ing over 260 families per week in cooper-ation with Door Dash. Finally, kids re-ceived 39,972 grab-and-go meals from January through August and the start-up of in-person classes led to weekend backpack service for kids starting up in four elementary schools in October. Our family of members and friends at Grace were instrumental in helping our services continue during COVID-19 peri-od. Volunteers helped sort food, unload deliveries, pack delivery boxes and pro-vide morale support.

Please continue to keep the food bank, its staff and programs, volunteers, and clients in your prayers.

ALTAR GUILD

The word for 2021 was flexibility. Like other groups in the church’s ministry, Altar Guild worked to find new ways to serve the congregation during these ex-traordinary times. The individual com-munion sets allowed us to offer the sac-rament in a safe manner, while expand-ing to providing communion at every church service. Altar Guild is a dedicated group of mem-bers who coordinate with the pastors and church office to help make weekly com-munion, baptismal, and festival services run smoothly, while keeping the altar area in good order. Our responsibilities this year have been a bit different than in a typical year as we worked to support

worship in a manner that respects the safety concerns of all. 2021 Members were: Ingrid Bentzen, Sandy Bollinger, Karlene Chavez, Veronica Zermeno, Leslie Dizon, Marcia Heath, Chris Hornung, Cherie Hunter, Becky Johnson, Susan Johnson, Nancy Larsen, Gloria Lyon, Sheila Morrison, Colleen Powers, Audrey Wheeler, & Ruth Wix.

WORSHIP AND MUSIC MINISTRY

GRACE CHOIR Grace Choir is so grateful to be singing and worshipping together again! As the newest director of part of our Worship and Music program here at Grace, I have the privilege of conducting and leading this fantastic ensemble. I have been welcomed into my new role with open hearts and voices. Thank you to all who come week after week to continue this vital ministry to Grace Lutheran Church. Our goal as we grow together as a choir is to provide beautiful anthems on Sun-day mornings as well as to enrich con-gregational worship through singing. During our weekly rehearsal, we work on vocal techniques, musicality, breath management in addition to all the music we sing Sunday after Sunday! So much of our role in worship is that of leader for congregational participation – hence all hymns, service music (liturgy) as well as our special anthems fill our rehearsal time. Grace Choir continues to welcome all singers interested in this ministry. We will build upon a beautiful legacy that Laird poured so much of his heart into during his many years here. May our many and varied voices continue to be raised to God’s glory for years to come! In peace, Amy Boers Minister of Grace Choir

CONTEMPORARY MUSIC Well, it was another interesting season for us at Grace, learning to do new things in new ways, juggling, punting, realigning, reimagining and remaining flexible in all our ministries. We were incredibly excited and hopeful when COVID-19 seemed almost gone in early summer, only to feel disappointed as we watched it come back with a vengeance in the fall. For most of us, our emotions have truly run the gamut these last months. It has been a challenging time, indeed, but it is good to know that God

has remained steadfast in Word and call to us both individually and as a commu-nity. This year our contemporary music team started back at the 11:00 am worship service with a skeleton music crew in May and were able to add our full group by mid-July. For safety reasons we kept rehearsals to a minimum relying heavily on our vast song catalog and rehearsing a bit during the 10 o’clock hour each Sunday. It has been wonderful to be back wor-shipping together in community again and even though our masks make it somewhat different than what we have been accustomed to, there is nothing like being in the same space, praising our Lord with our Grace family. For our online service we managed to record 18 new song-videos and added 29 new fully produced songs to our mix this past year. We will be continuing to build this catalog throughout the coming year as time permits. Our team of musi-cians have been so open and willing to contribute and serve this way – it in-spires me daily. Thanks again to Lindsay for adding some wonderful songs to this online ministry. Big thanks to all who served in our con-temporary music ministry this year: Dan, Dave, John, Tessa, Kelly, Lindsay, Dorsey, Ben, Malcolm, Beth, Kyle, Colin, Brendan, Dusty and Jakob – THANK YOU. We were all sad to see our friend and longtime Pastor, John O’Neal, retire this year but had the great pleasure of wel-coming Pastor Salvador Cossio to our Grace family. We were also delighted to welcome Amy Boers to our music minis-try team this summer. Words cannot adequately express the sadness we all feel in losing our great friend Laird Thornton this past year. He was a shin-ing light in Grace’s music ministry and will be greatly missed. We hold his family in our hearts and take comfort knowing that Jesus has welcomed him home. Once again, I’d like to give a big thanks to the staff and congregation at Grace.

Watching God work in you, on you, and through you is one of the great privileges of my life. Thanks for letting me be a part of your journey.

KIDS OF THE KINGDOM CHILDREN’S CHOIR The new norm. We’ve all heard that phrase over the past year and a half as we have learned to adapt to life with COVID-19. But this past year we were able to celebrate the new norm by safely

worshiping again in-person! I felt the energy and enthusiasm when the Kids of the Kingdom choir came back to church for practice in September after being away so long. It was incredible! They had no problems wearing their masks and staying three feet apart during prac-tice. While not ideal, they were used to it; it was the new norm for them too. We welcomed four fresh new members to the choir and I have enjoyed seeing them grow and become more confident in their singing, thanks in large part to having the support of their fellow singers around them. I have also had the pleas-ure of seeing some of my older choir members join the Joyful Ringers bell choir which conveniently meets right after choir practice. Despite what may be going on in our country and our commu-nity, our kids are still safely thriving and soaking in all they can get and that’s what I love about Grace Lutheran Church. I am so thankful for these kids, their families, and all those at Grace who have adapted to this new norm and con-tinue to make church a safe place to worship.

HANDBELL MUSIC For the handbell program, we needed to scale back in 2021 as we were still locked down the first half of the year and needed to rebuild as we re-opened for in-person worship this fall. I am pleased to report that our adult choir, Resounding Grace, had an oppor-tunity to share their gifts with an in-person congregation for the first time in over a year last June and that we played during in-person worship once a month this fall. The group is also periodically recording music to add to the library of handbell options for our online worship. For the Joyful Ringers and the Jubilant Ringers (our children’s and youth bell choirs), the focus was different. Our focus was on maintaining a sense of family and togetherness by sharing sto-ries and concerns, and by praying for each other as we managed the challeng-es associated with COVID-19. The so-cial aspects of being in a handbell group took precedent over making music the first half of the year while most of our kids were in online school and this fall when we had the opportunity to welcome several newcomers to the handbell pro-gram. Both groups played on Christmas Eve and are expected to share their mu-sic once or twice with the congregation in the first half of 2022. Congregation of Grace – Thank you for your continued support of the handbell program. I look forward to continuing to serve you as we continue to return to normal and work toward implementing new ideas and traditions.

FINANCE MINISTRY Dear Church, As we began 2021 our Financial Ministry Team (FMT) felt blessed to have devel-oped a solid spend plan to navigate through the year. With this in place we continued work to strengthen our finan-cial foundation. This included reviewing our insurance coverages and securing a line of credit. While we have no plans to use it, having it in case there is a sudden need makes good fiscal sense. During the year, as what had happened the previous year, many of the planned activities to support our vision and mis-sion had to be postponed, cancelled, or re-tooled to overcome the continuing circumstances. Our staff and volunteers have done a wonderful job again this year to successfully persevere. Thank you for your service and stewardship. As the people of Grace continue to ad-just too, from continuing to embrace our mission to on-going changes at work, and individual income, we continue to

give generously. Through the end of November, we have given $747,251. This is only 11% behind last year. Thank you for your continued gifts to-wards God’s work. As we look ahead to 2022 we have de-veloped a spend plan that will support our mission of outreach and inclusivity, while being very fiscally responsible. After serving four plus years as Budget Manager, Angie Cadwell will be stepping down so she can better focus on her family and her full-time job. We thank her for the many hours of work and guidance to upgrade our payroll and accounting systems. Her expertise and dedication were invaluable. Thank you and best wishes. Diane Nelson, our current Treasurer, will be taking over the Budget Manager’s position. Diane has helped at GCC the past few years, and brings a high level of energy, integrity, and attention to detail. Please offer her congratulations and success. Along with Angie and Diane, Grace con-tinues to be blessed to have these dedi-cated servants: Sandi Denoff, Travis Warnock, and Steve Dunham as well as, Marilyn Bunger, Don Dietz, and Ron & Mary Klemetson for their weekly behind the scenes work. Their thoughtful input, expertise, and dedication continue to be invaluable. Thank you also to Jason Hervin, Jeff Barstow, and Pastor Chad for their on-going involvement and support. 2022 GRACE CONGREGATIONAL BOARD NOMINATIONS

Amy Baker Board Member

I have been a member of Grace for about 19 years. I am a wife and mother of two. I have a 16 year old, Madison, who has been baptized and confirmed at Grace. I also have a six year old, Olivia, who has also been baptized at Grace. Olivia has a medical condition that has required her to gain treatment from Seat-tle Children’s Hospital. Over the past four years, I have served on a Cystic Fibrosis Parent advisory council and con-tinue to be a family advisor for the hospi-tal. I want to serve there because I want to be able to help other families that are dealing with a medically fragile child and also give back to the hospital for doing a wonderful job caring for my daughter. As for my job, I am a Housing Manager for a 60 unit low income senior apartment building. I have been working for the same organization for almost 20 years

and love being able to help the poor and vulnerable. Over the past couple years, I felt God pulling on my heart to serve on the Board at Grace. When I first felt the pull, the timing just wasn’t good. I continued to pray that when the time was right that it would become evident. I recently real-ized that what I had been praying for was now becoming very clear. There is an open position on the board and the tim-ing in my life is perfect!

Brian Maloney Board Treasurer

Hello Church! As a life-long member of the congrega-tion, I am humbled to be nominated to be your new Treasurer. I attended Sunday School, Confirmation, and Summer Mission Team trips before graduating from our church youth pro-gram. My wife Kelly and I were married at Grace nearly 20 years ago. During my time at Grace, I have served as a youth

advisor, supported the contemporary worship service, and I have previously served on the Church Board as a newly married young adult. Life has come full circle and now our own two children, Ellie (15) and Ian (12), are part of the Youth Program. When I’m not working in my career as an electrical engineer, I enjoy skiing, biking, indoor rock climbing and spending time with my family. Our family has experienced the blessing of stewardship and I look forward to serv-ing the Grace community by assisting Diane, our Budget Manager, and the council with reporting and helping to de-termine how best to use the wonderfully generous gifts that the people of Grace have provided.

What a year it has been! When COVID-19 first hit it was a big adjustment for everyone all over the world, and in 2020 we learned to adapt and adjust from wearing masks to helping our school-agers distance learn. The year 2021 seems to have been a blur, like hopping aboard a moving train that was constant-ly changing tracks. But like the year 2020, we came together through it all and found a way to come together and rise above those challenges. Jackie participates in a Director’s Circle pro-gram, and one of the things that she has learned is this: Celebrate the WINS. Vaccines of COVID-19 began rolling out! The roll out of the vaccines brought such peace of mind, especially for me. I’ve kept a distance from my family due to so many members being at risk. Knowing that there were vaccines availa-ble has brought some calm and peace, knowing that we can slowly begin physi-cally gathering again. Our school-agers are now able to attend on-site learning. This was such a hard-ship for them in the beginning. The school-agers back on-site has brought such relief as they can get back to that sense of normalcy of going back into the classroom.

New teachers and families joining the community that is Grace. In the year 2021, we have had many teachers join our community. They have jumped on board with us as we navigated through the changes and challenges as we con-tinue to go through this pandemic.

Welcoming a Nurse Consultant for our Infant program. She has provided wonderful guidance as flu season began. Our Nurse Consultant has been a won-derful addition to the team, aiding us in the health and care of our babies and even giving guidance to our Waddlers and Toddlers. Though we are sad to see Royale Lock-hart retire from Grace, we are excited for the journey that is ahead of her. This sad news brings greatness as Leticia and Jackie will now lead Grace Children’s Center as Co-Directors! Onward and forward! Blessings,

Jackie Caoagdan and Leticia Gomez Co-Directors

GLC PRESCHOOL

It is our 39th year as a ministry of GLC, and we feel blessed. Last year, we had to close due to COVID-19. Staff quickly adjusted to daily, online meetups with our students, and we waited. We waited and made plans to reopen. We waited and made plans on how to teach virtual-ly. We taught online for months. Last spring we were able to open our doors to teaching kids in-person again, which is the best way for young children to learn. We devised a plan to keep our staff and families safe, and with God’s help we did it. We finished the year in-person with no outbreaks. The entire GLC Preschool and our students masked, distanced, cleaned, and washed our hands. We met for a whole Summer School session, giving families more time to have their kids in school building not only their academics but relational skills as well. God has been with us every step of the way. Through these trying times we had some staff transitions. Debbie O’Neal and Janice Nordsletten retired in 2021, leav-ing behind a great legacy of love. I had the great honor of shadowing and train-ing with these amazing leaders as I be-came a GLC Preschool teacher and di-rector. We have a fantastic and talented team who pours love into this preschool program. I am absolutely honored to know them, and to work with them. We have found ourselves constantly evolving throughout these past few months as we navigate our way through these new ways. We hope for another year full of joy and learning! We are committed to making GLC Preschool a safe and joyful place to learn, grow, and succeed. Through it all, God’s light has shone on and around us and we are grateful. Thank you for supporting our school staff and families! Miranda Winter Director
