• John Carter Jr. was 4-4 from three-point range in scoring 16 first-half points and Sean Yoder was 3-3 from long range in the first 20 minutes,

• After halftime, the margin was as few as two points at 42-40 and 44-42 before Navy extended it back out to seven points at 51-44. Virginia tied the game at 53-53 and 55-55, with the latter coming with 8:45 left.

• Yoder scored on an inside shot, then grabbed an offensive board and scored on the putback to give Navy a 59-55 lead with 3:42 remaining. Game 3 H Navy at Louisville

• Navy was 11-21 from three-point land thanks to Carter going 5-8 from long range. Carter totaled 19 points and Yoder scored 15.

• Virginia’s last lead in the game came at 10-8 with 15:35 left in the first half.

Navy vs. Ranked Teams• The win over Virginia was the first for Navy against a

nationally-ranked team –– the Cavaliers were ranked 25th in both preseason national polls –– since March 16, 1986, when David Robinson and the No. 17 Mids defeated No. 4 / 5 Syracuse, 97-85, in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In between, Navy had lost 17-straight games to nationally-ranked teams.

• The last time an unranked Navy team beat a national-ly-ranked team was Dec. 27, 1985, when Robinson and the Mids beat No. 20 / 18 DePaul, 67-64, in a game played in Atlanta.

DeChellis on 2021-22 Non-League Schedule• “We can simulate their rotation, we can simulate the

pack (defense) for the most part. What we can’t simu-late is their size. As I always tell our guys and staff, it is going to take us a few minutes to get up to speed with the speed and the agility. We can’t simulate the length. Virginia is really long this year. Then you get Virginia Tech and then you get Louisville. You can’t simulate the speed of the game, the length of the game, the quick-ness. The court will look a lot smaller because their guys are bigger, but we know how to hedge ball screens and work the post. We can work on those things and what the looks are.”

• “People say you are crazy for playing the schedule you are playing. Yeah, maybe, but there is only one team from our league going to the NCAA Tourna-ment. We are not a two-bid league, we are a one-bid league. So I am going to try and make it as tough and as competitive as I possibly can in a non-conference schedule, because I think our guys can do it. I think our guys have proven they can win a big game or two, like beating George Washington here (in Annapolis) and Georgetown on the road. So why not challenge them?”

DeChellis on the Virginia Victory• “Obviously it is a very good win for us. I am really proud

of our kids. It was a great atmosphere in here. We haven’t played in front of fans in a year, like everybody else. I thought we did a good job of maintaining our composure and making plays on both ends of the floor.”

• “This (the win) probably got their (Virginia Tech) atten-tion. That’s how smart I am. It is another game, and then we have Louisville on Monday. I expect another tough hard-fought game.”

• “It (the season) is a long, long race. A lot of stuff hap-pens. Babies are born, people pass away, people get married, we have several holidays. It is a long season. You just have to keep your wits about you and take it one day and one game at a time. That’s a coach cliche, but it is just who we are.”

Miscellaneous Game Records• Navy has posted a 1-1 record in games played on Nov.

About the United States Naval AcademyThe U.S. Naval Academy As the undergraduate college of the Naval service, the Naval Academy prepares young men and women to become professional officers in the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. USNA students are midshipmen on active duty in the U.S. Navy. They attend the academy for four years, graduating with bachelor of science degrees and reserve commissions as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps. Naval Academy graduates serve at least five years as Navy or Marine Corps officers. Founded in 1845, Academy started as the Naval School on 10 acres of old Fort Severn in Annapolis with an original class of 55. In 1850 it became the United States Naval Academy. A new curriculum went into effect requir-ing midshipmen to study at the Academy for four years and to train aboard ships each summer. Congress authorized the Naval Academy to begin awarding bachelor of science degrees in 1933.

USNA Mission Statement“To develop midshipmen morally, mentally and physically and to imbue them with the highes t ideals of duty, honor and loyalty in order to graduate leaders who are dedicated to a career of naval service and have potential for future development in mind and character to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship and government.”

Midshipman The word midshipman first appeared in English in the 17th century in the form of the word midshipman to designate those men who were stationed “amidships,” i.e. in the waist or middle portion of the vessel, while on duty. By 1687, the second ‘s’ had been dropped to give the current form of the word. Midshipmen were originally boys, sometimes as young as seven or eight, who were appren-ticed to sea captains to learn the sailor’s trade. In the early days of the American Navy, mid-shipmen trained aboard ship until they were eventually commissioned as ensigns. With the founding of the Naval Academy in 1845, it became possible, as it still is, for a midshipman to enter the Navy directly from civilian life.

Head Coach Ed DeChellis• Ed DeChellis is in his 11th season as the head coach of the Mids.• The native of Monaca, Pa., is a 1982 graduate of Penn State (B.A. in secondary education).• He has guided the Mids to 109 victories over the last seven seasons (2014-15 through 2020-21), including 66 wins in league play. • This is after the program had totaled 79 wins in all over the previous seven seasons and 43 wins against league foes over the prior nine years.• In 2020-21, Navy compiled an overall record of 15-3 and won the revamped Patriot League’s South Division with a 12-1 record. The Mids also earned the outright No. 1 seed in the

league tournament for the first time since the 1997 tournament.• DeChellis earned Patriot League Coach of the Year accolades in 2021.• In 2019-20, Navy was tabbed to place ninth in the Patriot League but garnered the No. 6 seed in the Patriot League Tournament. The Mids played 15 league regular season games that

were decided by 10 or fewer points. That was not only the most of any league team but also the highest number of close league games in program history.• In 2018-19, the Mids faced the toughest strength of schedule of any team in the Patriot League. The Mids would end the 2018-19 year with an overall record of 12-19 and tie for fifth

place in the Patriot League with an 8-10 record. • Additionally in 2018-19, the Mids reached the semifinal round of the Patriot League Tournament for the second time in three seasons. Navy’s 2017 berth in the semifinal round was the

first for the Mids since 2001. • Included in this recent span were records of 20-12 overall and 11-7 in league play during the 2017-18 campaign. It was the first 20-win season for the Mids since the 1999-2000 season.• DeChellis won his 100th game as Navy’s head coach in the quarterfinal round of the 2019 Patriot League Tournament when the Mids defeated American on March 7, 2019.• Navy’s ensuing game, March 10 at Colgate in the semifinal round of the tournament, was his 250th on the Navy sideline and the 700th game in his career as a head coach.• DeChellis has been the driving force behind the creation of the Veterans Classic, a one-day basketball doubleheader that honors ours nation’s veterans. Past teams to have participated

in the event include Auburn, Davidson, Florida, Marquette, Maryland, North Carolina, Michigan State, Ohio State and Vanderbilt. This year’s event, the eighth edition of the games, features Richmond vs. Utah State and Virginia Tech vs. Navy.

• His 298 games as a head coach through the 2020-21 season ranks fourth at Navy, and his 129 wins at the school ranks fifth.• DeChellis ranks second among Patriot League coaches for the most career games won as a head coach.• DeChellis also is beginning his 26th season as a head coach. He previously served as the head coach at East Tennessee State (seven years) and his alma mater, Penn State (eight

years). • He is one of nine active coaches to have won at least 100 games at three or more Division I schools.• He has posted 20-win seasons at each of his three stops.• DeChellis led East Tennessee State to Southern Conference North Division titles in 2001, 2002 and 2003, with the Bucs also winning the conference tournament and advancing to the

NCAA Tournament in 2003.• DeChellis took Penn State to national postseason tournaments three times in his eight seasons. This included a 2006 trip to the NIT just three years after the program posted the second

of back-to-back seven-win seasons, a 2009 NIT championship and the 2011 NCAA Tournament. The 2011 effort marked the first trip to the Big Dance for the Nittany Lions in a decade.• Another honor bestowed upon DeChellis was his being selected as the 2006 National Coaches vs. Cancer Man of the Year for his contributions in raising both funds for and awareness

of the fight against cancer.
