I was gobsmacked last July when I first saw this exquisite and very unique antique French sampler. This beautiful undated, unsigned sampler was found in a house in upstate New York, which Meg of Lindsay Lane Designs, the reproductionist, was fortunate enough to acquire. “Pour ta fete” translated from French to English means “For your party.” One can only assume the initials of the stitcher are VAM. The other words on the sampler are Noite and Feliz, which are Portuguese for Night and Happy. So was this sampler created by a French girl for a Portuguese friend? Was the party at night and was it happy? We will never know, but isn’t it fun thinking about the celebration that might have taken place so long ago. . . . Elizabeth Charlotte Cotton from Hands Across the Sea Samplers

Reproduced by Nicola Parkman of Hands Across the Sea Samplers from a sampler in her private collection as an Attic Needlework exclusive. Here’s what Nicola tells us about this exquisite 18th-Century sampler: Elizabeth, who we believe was known as Charlotte, diligently plied her needle laying reversible cross stitches, cross stitches over 1 thread, satin stitches, Montenegrin stitches, double back stitches and Algerian eyelets. Stitched from a palette of 15 jewel-like colors including garnet, rose, terra cotta, peach, gray greens, soft golds, yellows and celadon green, the sampler has a stitch count of 353 x 303.

The model, left, was exquisitely stitched by Bhooma Aravamudan on a now-unavailable linen. But we are kitting it with the beautiful Legacy 37ct Wild Honey plus Au Ver A’Soie’s Soie d’Alger. For those wanting a smaller count, we’re offering 46ct Weeks Platinum or Confederate Gray, shown below, The Stitch-Along will be lead by Robert Harris, who will post details of his progress each month. Prices: * Chart $32 * Au Ver A’Soie Soie d’Alger silks $85.50 * Au Ver A’Soie 100.3 silks + Soie Surfine for the over-one words $67.10 * 37ct Wild Honey - special cut w/2.5” margins $33 or 46ct Weeks in your choice of either Parchment (several of the lighter golds stitch tone-on-tone on this linen) or the lovely Confederate Gray, shown below. If you prefer a darker linen in 46ct, Straw or Mocha is also a suggestion.

For a few hours Saturday afternoon, NeedleWorkPress invites you to step back in time to tour a replica nineteenth century Pennsylvania farmhouse in the Arizona desert. Thirty years ago this summer, Niles and Vickie Jennett built and moved into this unlikely dwelling, determined to create an oasis reminiscent of bygone days. Their well-lived-in and loved home contains a variety of needlework and veterinary treasures from the 1800’s. “We collect what we love,” agree Vickie and her daughter-in-law Maegan, who together blend their passion for history and needlework in the small business they run from home (Maegan and her family live just down the lane). “We tend to like simple folk art that draws us into the lives of makers who otherwise would have been forgotten.” They invite Symposium participants to enjoy viewing the many samplers, needlework smalls, and related ephemera that inspire their work. Every room in the house (yes, even the bathroom) has at least a sampler or two; some rooms have dozens. Maegan and Vickie are printing a special NeedleWorkPress surprise just for Sympos ium par t i c ipan t s . Weather permitting, enjoy your box lunch in the garden.

The petite basket pincushion is a fanciful objet d’art created by the very talented scrim artist, Cynthia Linnell, exclusively for Patrick’s Woods. The basket is inspired by an antique ivory pincushion from Sherri’s collection and measures 3” wide x 2.5” tall (1.5” h without handles). The cushion interior is covered with custom-dyed velvet. A diminutive pocket sampler for needles is embroidered on a 40-count silk gauze canvas with silk floss and measures 2.5”wide x 7” long unrolled. The interior features three pockets for storing special antique-style needle packets. The canvas is backed with handmade Dupioni silk, so there is no need to fill in the canvas background with embroidery! Alternatively, the pocket sampler may be worked on linen fabric (not included in the class kit). It is finished by hand and edged with custom-dyed silk taffeta ribbon. Two teeny plump strawberry emeries complete the set.

Bring an embroidery hoop, mat board or embroidery frame with a 4.5” – 5” opening. You will also need good magnification and lighting! In class, we will also work on creating the basket pin cushion. You will need a sharp sewing needle, regular sewing thread for basting, ecru or beige colored heavy duty sewing thread (like a button and craft thread; ecru or beige will match color of scrim pieces), a small pair of pliers of other tool to pull needle through basket pieces (clothes pins work well too!), paper scissors, double-stick tape, full-size dressmakers fabric shears (not small or mini shears), extra-fine straight pins, fabric marking pen or pencil, and 2 rubber bands (to hold basket pieces stable while sewing).

GOOD MAGNIFICATION AND LIGHTING IS A MUST!

September 2020 Workshop with . . .PAGE16

. . . Nicola ParkmanTHE ATTIC

Above, the extraordinary 1709 band sampler from Elizabeth Peto featuring a number of surface embroidery stitches, including one of my favorites, the rice stitch. Right, Ann Castle’s 1811 sampler featuring a magnificent red house with satin-stitch steps, beautiful potted roses, and many other wonderful motifs.

I am thrilled to announce that The Attic will be hosting a two-day workshop in September 2020 featuring two beautiful samplers from the collection of Nicola Parkman. Each sampler has its unique features but, most importantly, Nicola’s research on both of the embroiderers brings these magnificent samplers to life for today’s needleworkers 200 and 300 years later. Neither of these samplers will be taught anywhere else in the USA.

The workshop is scheduled for September 19-20 ~ full details will be published just as soon as the models are completed, so that we know how much silk to include in each kit. Thanks for your patience.

The Attic, Mesa, AZ Toll-Free: 1.888.94-ATTIC (1.888.942.8842) www.atticneedlework.com

From the HATS Website about this beautiful band sampler from the private collection of Nicola Parkman, a sampler with a remarkable history: There is so much to delight in her sampler. She used a wide repertoire of stitches of varying intricacy. The variety of stitching techniques in the rows of the sampler are a testament to Bathya’s embroidery skills. Such skills were considered particularly important, not only to the management of the young maker’s future household and family, but they would also have served as evidence of her education and of her parents’ ability to provide her with one. The stitches include two different versions of reversible cross stitch.  One forms a cross on the reverse with a vertical stitch on the left, and the other a four sided stitch on the reverse. Bathya also used double back stitch and diagonal double back stitch. These stitches appear plaited from the front and as two parallel rows of back stitch on the reverse. You might know them as closed herringbone. Others stitches used were double sided Italian stitch, alternating double back stitch in groups of three, which represents the Trinity, detached buttonhole, French knots, four sided stitch, satin stitch, stem stitch, eyelet, running stitch and Holbein stitch (double running stitch). The alphabet towards the top of the sampler demonstrates her ability to mark household linen. It was common practice to include initials and numbers on household linens so that women could track their household goods when they were laundered. Read more HERE.

THE ATTIC . . . Hands Across the Sea Samplers PAGE21

Nicola Parkman says the following on the HATS Website: ANN UFFINDELL 1835 and ISABELL UFFINDELL 1829 were originally published by Hands Across the Sea in a special limited-edition booklet and were our gift to our stitching sisters in 2017, and as they each make their their solo appearance at the end of 2019, they are once again our gift to a new audience of sampler lovers. They come from our hearts to your hands. When we reproduce samplers, we not only follow the path that the little girls’ needles and floss originally took but as we research the girls, we also follow a meandering thread back through time casting a light onto their lives.

Ann and Isabella are two very special samplers. They are special not only as they are very, very beautiful samplers but also because they were stitched by two sisters. Both the sisters were 10 years of age when they stitched their samplers, Isabella in 1829 and Ann 6 years later in 1835. As a collector sister, samplers particularly fascinate me. I find it so remarkable that two samplers remain together through the centuries.

Ann and Isabella have been reproduced using the colours on the front of the samplers in 2016.

We have had dozens and dozens, perhaps hundreds, of requests for these samplers in the past two years, and we are thrilled that they are once again available to sampler lovers across the world. We did overdyed silk conversions for both Ann and Isabella’s samplers, so you have several choices: AVAS Soie d’Alger, Soie 100.3, or Glorian’s Tudor Silks or their standard silks. Your choice should correlate with your linen choice, and there are today, several years later, several linens that would be suitable, depending on your count preference. Choose from Lakeside’s Pecan Butter or Light Examplar in 36ct, 40ct, or 46ct, or Legacy’s 37ct Wild Honey or Corn Tassel, Weeks Parchment available in 36ct, 40ct, 46ct, and 56ct, or standard Zweigart linens in a beautiful new color, Café au Lait, available in 40ct and 56ct, or Antique Ivory available in 36ct. And I’m sure there are other choices as well, depending on your preference for lighter or darker . Send us an email inquiry or phone, and we will be happy to discuss the options with you. And if we don’t have the linen you choose in stock, we would be pleased to order it for you. Stitching samplers of this significance should be done using the best products that meet your tastes and preferences. And waiting for the right materials is a good choice.

WINTER VALENTINE $8, 105 x 77

I LOVE this design, too … a pair of very charming cardinals under the mistletoe! Here’s what Designer Jeannine tells us about this design: “This is my take on a winter ‘valentine,’ with two small birds and a cluster of mistletoe. One version offers the text Love Warms the Heart and the other features snowflakes. Although both are presented on the same linen, the effect of the thread colors has a significant impact on the way the linen color looks, so this was a bit tricky to photograph.”

The models are stitched in DMC, but overdyed silks would be F.A.B.U.L.O.U.S.! Just ask Carolyn!

And here is Dorie’s finished model for us … we just have to decide how to finish it, frame it or pincushion it or . . . Aren’t the silks lovely?

This fabulous project, a collaboration between Ink Circles, Hands On Design, and Summer House Stitche Workes, is being offered exclusively at a select list of shops who took the class at Nashville. The Attic is one of them. Our model, over one, is being stitched as we speak, and we’ve done a silk conversion … of course! … and put it on a beautiful 30ct Legacy linen.

I am enamored with these Tim Holtz Assemblage Lockets ($10) ~ I think they’re stunning with their beveled glass and vintage look. Easy formula to determine the linen count you will need to fit a design into the 1.5-inch diameter opening: Divide the size of the design, i.e., number of stitches, by 1.5 inches. For example, if your design is 65 stitches, divided by 1.5, you will need to choose a 46ct linen to fit the design stitched over one.

Thank you to everyone who participated in the opportunity tickets for this amazingly generous donation with proceeds ($550) benefitting the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). When Carol drew the winning ticket on Friday, the 13th, it was a very lucky day for the winner … and for us … because the winner is a five-month survivor of breast cancer! It couldn’t have been more perfect. So the tree was packaged and shipped to New Jersey to its new home, arriving on Christmas Eve day! And here’s some of what Lynn wrote in her message when she sent the above photo: It’s here! It’s here! And it’s GLORIOUS! The work that went into those ornaments is jaw dropping. They are true labors of love! Please tell everyone who was involved in this project that I am so thankful. This really has made our Christmas merry!

The wonderful news: The two very talented and generous beaders/donors have offered to do this again next year. I have frequently been blown away by the generosity and kindness of needleworkers, and it continues! But next year it will be my goal to double or triple the money raised by this incredible gift, and I ask for your help!
