2017-18 Women’s Tennis Record Book 9

Opened in September 2000, the Student Tennis Center at the University of Oregon was a tremendous step forward in solidifying the presence of Duck Tennis as a major component of the university’s athletic culture.

The $2.1 million facility hosts both the men’s and women’s varsity tennis programs, as well as club tennis, physical education classes and student recreation. The project was the result of a combined effort fundraising effort from Physical Activities and Recreation Services (PARS) Department, the Athletics Department and the efforts of former Oregon men’s tennis coach Chris Russell and former women’s coach Jack Griffin.

The entire facility received a new playing surface and improved light-ing prior to the 2008-2009 season.

On Nov. 9, 2013, the indoor center court on the north side of the Student Tennis Center was annointed the Alex Rovello Court in honor of former men’s tennis player Alex Rovello. Rovello passed away fol-lowing his junior season in a diving accident.

“It is very important to honor the legacy of Alex Rovello and to make sure that it lives on,” said head men’s tennis coach Nils Schyllander.Rovello posted a career 60 wins in singles play and notched 53 doubles victories in three season at UO.

The women of Oregon went 11-5 last year in 2013, the most wins at home since the Ducks went 9-2 during the 2008-09 campaign. In 2011-12, the Ducks won seven out of their final eight home matches, including a pair of Pac-12 wins over 43rd-ranked Utah, 4-3, April 6, 2012 and Colorado, 7-0, on April 7, 2012.

The Ducks are 96-52 in matches played at the Oregon Student Tennis Center since its inaugural season (2000-01). In 2009, Oregon put to-gether a 9-2 home season. In 2004, the Oregon women’s squad were 8-2 at home. That same year, the Ducks defeated New mexico in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to advance to the second round before falling to conference-rival Washington, 4-3, to end the season.

HISTORY

Daria Panova2003 All-American (Singles, Doubles)2004 All-American (Singles)

Daria Panova is Oregon’s all-time career leader in singles victories, posting a 94-50 (.653) record from 2001-05. She was a member of two Oregon NCAA Tournament teams (2002, 2004) and helped the Ducks advance to the second round in both of those years. Panova set the school’s single-season record for most singles wins in 2003, going 32-15 (.680). As a junior in 2004, she matched her 2003 mark, finishing the season 32-14 (.695). Panova also went 18-12 with doubles partner Courtney Nagle in 2003. Panova and Nagle’s 32-25 doubles mark between 2002-04 ranks third in school history.

Panova was the 2003 Pac-10 Tournament Individual Champion and advanced to the third round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament in singles play and to the quarterfinals in doubles (with Nagle). She was a first team All-Pac-10 selection and earned All- American honors as both a singles and doubles player in 2003. Panova garnered first team All-Pac-10 honors and All-American accolades in singles during the 2004 season but was defeated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. As a senior in 2005, Panova was named second team All-Pac-10 and went 23-12 with doubles partner Dominika Dieskova, which ranks second in Oregon tennis history.

Courtney Nagle2003 All-American (Doubles)

Courtney Nagle won 65 singles matches from 2000-04 and ranks fourth all-time in career singles victories. She won 32 doubles matches with fellow All-American Daria Panova from 2002-04, which ranks third all-time in Or-egon history. Her 18-12 mark with Panova in 2003 ranks ninth in school history.

Nagle helped the University of Oregon to two of its three alltime NCAA Tournament team victories as a sophomore in 2002 and senior in 2004. Individually, Nagle advanced to the first round of the 2003 NCAA Tournament and teamed with Panova to advance to the quarterfinals in doubles play the same year. She earned All-American ac-colades in doubles for her efforts during the 2003 NCAA Tournament.

Nagle won the University of Oregon’s “Most Improved Player” award after her freshman and junior seasons in 2001 and 2003, respectively.

ALL-TIME LETTERWINNERS (SINCE 1990)

20 2017-18 Women’s Tennis Record Book

Rob MullensDirector of Athletics8th Year

Rob Mullens has presided over one of the most successful eras in the University of Oregon’s history with Duck student-athletes setting milestone records both on the field and in the classroom. He has guided Oregon to consecutive top-10 finishes in the Directors’ Cup, including an all-time high of ninth place in 2016-17. The Directors’ Cup is a national assessment of an athletic department’s overall achievements, for the first time in school

history. At the same time, Mullens has improved the Ducks’ academic standards to where the University now averages more than 100 academic all-conference selections annually. And just as important as the athletic and academic success, Oregon’s philosophy of fiscal efficiency during Mullens’ tenure has been recognized nationwide. The University is one of only a handful of institutions that is self-sufficient as the Oregon brand continues to grow. That is a direct reflection of our generous donors who continue to help us achieve important fundraising results. Those three pillars – student-athlete experience, academic excellence and broad-based competitive excellence – comprise the foundation of Mullens’ core beliefs as he oversees nearly 500 student-athletes and a budget of $110 million. Yet Mullens himself would tell you that it is the talented student-athletes, coaches and staff at the University of Oregon that are the department’s most valuable assets. Mullens was named the University’s 12th director of intercollegiate athletics on July 15, 2010, after arriving from the University of Kentucky, where he served as deputy director of athletics and managed day-to-day operations for Kentucky’s 22-sport athletics department, with an annual operating budget of $79 million. Since Mullens’ arrival in Eugene, the Duck football team has claimed three conference championship and played in the inaugural College Football Playoff Championship Game. The 2014-15 season saw the coronation of the University’s first-ever Heisman Trophy winner, Marcus Mariota, as the Ducks won the Pac-12 title and then defeated undefeated Florida State in the Rose Bowl semifinal game. The 2016-17 year will go down as one of the finest in school history. Oregon became the first college in the country to win the “triple crown” in women’s track and field and cross country. The Women of Oregon captured the 2016 cross country title by a single point, scored a record number of points in winning the indoor track and field title, and then pulled off a stunning comeback to win the outdoor track and field title on the final event. The men’s basketball team returned to the Final Four for the first time since 1939, while the women’s basketball team made the Elite Eight for the first time in school history. A year after winning it all, the men’s golf team had a thrilling run to the championship match after winning the Pac-12 title for the first time since 1959. Additionally in 2016-17, Oregon saw the softball team return to the College World Series, top-10 national finishes from acrobatics and tumbling, men’s cross country and men’s indoor and outdoor track and field, and NCAA Tournament appearances by volleyball, women’s golf and men’s and women’s tennis. A year earlier after claiming championships in 2015-16 in men’s and women’s indoor track and field, the Ducks’ winning legacy was strengthened by the first-ever national championship for the men’s golf team, won on its home course in Eugene at Eugene Country Club. The Ducks claimed the team championship just a couple days after Aaron Wise won the individual national championship. Aided by the an Elite Eight appearance by the men’s basketball team and an NCAA quarterfinals finish for women’s golf, the Ducks’ three team championships helped carry them to a 10th-place Directors’ Cup finish, the highest in program history and the first ever top-10 finish. Oregon and Oklahoma are the only programs Division I athletics to win three or more NCAA team titles each of the last two years. Oregon also became the only athletic department in the nation to have won multiple NCAA team titles each of the last five academic years. In the history of the Directors’ Cup, Oregon is the only program with 19 or fewer NCAA sports to place among the top 15 nationally, a feat the Ducks have done six times. Oregon also ranked among the top 25 for an eighth time in nine years. Seventeen of the University’s 33 all-time national championships have been won in the last five years. Off the field, Mullens saw three-quarters of UO student-athletes earn degrees. All told, more than 100 student-athletes won academic all-conference awards. Since the opening of the John E. Jaqua Academic Center for Student Athletes in 2010, 32 UO student-athletes have earned Academic All-America honors. Other highlights of Mullens’ tenure include four Women’s College World Series appearances for the softball team, a trip to the NCAA championship game in

DUCKS FINISH RECORD NINTH IN DIRECTOR’S CUP- The UO athletic department in 2016-17 posted its highest-ever finish for the third year in a row, taking ninth in the annual ranking of NCAA athletic departments. - Schools can count their best 20 team finishes (up to 10 women’s sports and 10 men’s sports) in an academic year, and Oregon took ninth despite fielding just 19 NCAA programs - more than a dozen fewer than top-two finishers Stanford and Ohio State. - The Ducks took ninth just a year after entering the top-10 for the first time in 2015-16, when the UO athletic department was 10th in the Directors’ Cup standings. A year earlier, Oregon was 13th, at that point its best finish ever. - The department earned 1,027 points toward the Directors’ Cup in 2016-2017, led by 300 from the women’s track and field program — 100 for each national title by the program in its historic “Triple Crown” year, the first by an NCAA women’s program. Oregon’s three national titles in 2016-17 were one fewer than Stanford and Oklahoma, and gave the Ducks multiple national championships for the fifth straight year, the longest active streak in the country.- The 100 points for the women’s NCAA Outdoor title contributed to Oregon’s 467 points during the spring, nearly half the department’s total for the year. The Ducks also got 90 points for the men’s golf team’s NCAA runner-up finish, 83 points for making the semifinals of the Women’s College World Series and 69 points for the ninth-place men’s NCAA Outdoor finish.
