Animal Bites

You should seek medical attention from your family physician or local health centre if you

are bitten by an animal and the bite breaks the surface of your skin. Health centres and

physicians report all animal bites to the Public Health Department.

Public Health Inspectors investigate each case to ensure there is no possibility of rabies. Any

animal that bites a person should be observed for 10 days to be sure that it does not develop

rabies symptoms.

Do not destroy the animal before the 10-day observation period is over.

The Medical Health Officer may recommend rabies vaccine if there is a significant risk.

Rabies vaccine is given to animal bite victims if the biting animal is rabid or if the biting

animal cannot be found and observed for 10 days.

Contact the Public Health Inspector for more details at (toll-free) 1-888-295-8005

Concerns/Quality of Care

Sun Country Health Region, through the "Quality of Care Coordinator" receives,

investigates and monitors patient and/or public concerns regarding unfavorable health care

experiences.

We believe it is necessary to receive input from consumers about the quality of care and

services that are provided. Based on that information, recommendations are made to

influence changes to improve or enhance the health care system.

The Quality of Care Coordinator is a client advocate to help you with questions or concerns

about regional health services and to provide you with information regarding your rights,

responsibilities and options. If you have a question or concern, we ask that you first discuss

this with the caregiver who provides the service, or with the appropriate supervisor.

If your concern remains unresolved, please contact the Region's Quality of Care

Coordinator. All questions, concerns or comments will be acknowledged and investigated in

a confidential manner.

If a program or service has exceeded your expectations, we would be pleased to also hear

those comments.

Falls Prevention

In 2012, about 17 per cent of the population in Sun Country Health Region was over the

age of 65 (about 9,148 people). Those people are at greater risk of suffering a fall than

most. One in two seniors over the age of 65 years of age experience a fall and one in three

seniors over 80 years of age experience a fall.

For older people living at home, the advice is:

1. increase your intake of Vitamin D to 1000-2000 International Units/day. It increases

your reaction time by 13 per cent, helps with postural stability and body sway, and

decreases your risk of falling by 49 per cent.

2. install grab bars and raised toilet seats in the bathroom

3. use a reacher device to move items from a high cupboard, rather than standing on a

chair. Keep items in lower cupboards so they are easier to reach.

4. wear proper footwear at all times

5. de-clutter your house so you don’t trip

6. eliminate scatter rugs and loose electrical cords

7. ensure you have adequate lighting, especially at night

8. if you use a walking aid, rearrange your home so it’s always at your reach and you can

move without obstacles

9. if you think you are at risk for falling, purchase a soft-shell hip protector. hip protectors

will protect your hips when you fall so that you don’t fracture a hip. These can be

purchased from the Region’s Therapies Departments, in Arcola 306-455-2628, Estevan

Foodborne Diseases

For every one food borne illness that is reported, there are 350 people who suffer nausea,

vomiting and/or diarrhea that do not report their illness. In the Sun Country Health Region,

this averages out to 290 people per week who suffer from food borne illness. The vast

majority of food borne illnesses are self inflicted (at home). On the other hand, many

stomach illnesses that people think are caused by bad food are actually caused by Entero-

or Noro-viruses that spread from person-to-person. These are not food borne illnesses at all.

The first step in identifying a food borne illness is seeing your doctor while you are

experiencing symptoms. Contact your Public Health Inspector for more information on how

to identify the source of a food borne illness.

Provincial regulations require that all licensed restaurants must have at least one staff

member per shift who has taken a food handler course. PHI's conduct numerous one-day

courses throughout the year and in various locations in the service area. Between 200 and

300 people receive the course each year.

Foot Care

What you can do about foot problems:

Wear proper fitting supportive shoes with low

broad heels.

Make sure your footwear is in good repair.

Talk with a foot specialist about calluses, bun-

ions, corns, or ingrown toenails. Corn plasters

are not recommended for people with diabe-

tes, heart or blood vessel disease.

If your shoes are loose and you can't afford a

new pair, buy insoles or wear extra socks.

DO NOT wear socks on linoleum or tiled

flooring.

Buy slippers that fit properly and are

enclosed around the heels.

Wear loose socks or stockings. Knee highs can

cut off your circulation in your legs and numb

your feet.

If your feet are swollen, put them up when sit-

ting or lying down.

See a professional foot-care specialist every

4-5 weeks for toenail cutting if you can't do it yourself.

Anyone may request services for foot care through their Home Care service. As with any

Home Care service, the client will be assessed for eligibility

Immunization

Immunization is a safe, reliable, and effective method of protecting both individuals and

communities from diseases that provide protection in the vaccine. It is important to maintain

high immunization rates to provide the best protection against vaccine-preventable diseases.

Vaccines are very safe. Sometimes immunizations can cause temporary side effects, such as

soreness where the needle went into the arm or leg or a slight fever. Serious side effects from

immunizations are very rare.

Immunizations in Saskatchewan for infants and children follow a regular schedule. Your

child’s first vaccines start at two months of age. Saskatchewan Health provides publicly

funded immunizations to protect your child. Immunization is available for children at Sun

Country Health Region Child Health Clinics and in schools.

To set up an appointment for immunization, obtain information about immunizations your

child is due for, or to obtain information about vaccines for children and adults contact the

workers such as case managers, nurses, personal support workers, doctors, allied health

professionals, and members of the public. Sun Country Health Region has adopted a toolkit

which provides a common approach for ethical decision-making.

Lifeline Program

Lifeline is an emergency accessing system, activated by the simple push of a button. It is

usually used by those who live alone and have a long term medical condition that may leave

them largely incapacitated without much warning.

When a person is in need, they will push a button that they are given to wear. This will alert

the lifeline dispatcher at the Weyburn General Hospital, who will then try to speak to the

client thru the machine installed into the phone line at the clients' house. Failing a response

the dispatcher will call one of the clients' responders and ask them to go over and check on

the client.

The charge is $40/month, with a $25 installation fee. Lifeline has been providing assurance

to people for 22 years.
