A message from the PresidentDear Friend of Southeast Community College,

On behalf of the Board of Governors, the alumni, faculty, staff, and students of this excellent institution, I am pleased to present Southeast Community College’s placement report “Graduates 2013-2014: A Report on Employment/College Transfer Outcomes.” The report includes graduation and employment statistics associated with 2013-14 graduates from all of our applied technology and transfer programs.

The report includes the total number of graduates, the number employed within the training-related field, the number continuing their education, the percent employed within Nebraska, and the average salary for SCC graduates. The graduation and employment data are captured via surveys and phone interviews conducted by SCC placement staff. For the 2013-14 graduates, 1,640 of the 1,676 graduates completed the graduate survey, yielding a response rate of 98%. The surveys are distributed just before the date of graduation. Follow-up interviews and surveys are conducted throughout the year to ensure the highest possible response rate. In addition to graduation and employment statistics, the report includes employers and transfer colleges and universities associated with each of SCC’s programs. The report also includes a sampling of personal experiences of graduates and employers in relation to the impact of SCC’s programs.

This report represents one of our many efforts to evaluate the success of our programs and the degree to which we are accomplishing our mission. Seventy-four percent (74%) of graduates from SCC’s applied technology programs reported that they had secured employment within their training field at the time of their graduation. Ninety-three percent (93%) of these graduates reported that they were either employed or continuing their education. Eighty-two percent (82%) of graduates from SCC’s academic transfer program reported that they were continuing their education.

SCC is committed to its mission of providing the highest quality applied technology and academic education opportunities to its 15-county service area. SCC has a long history of ensuring that employers have access to qualified graduates who have the skills needed for successful and productive employment. SCC continually seeks to align its programs with the specific needs and requirements of employers and transfer institutions. We are committed to meeting the educational needs of our students, employers and the community.

During his junior year in high school, Dylon Marshalek took a horticulture class and worked in landscape design after school. That is when he decided to pursue horticulture as a career. He learned about SCC’s program from a relative who talked about SCC’s program being hands-on and that was what he wanted. He interned at Friesen Landscaping and was offered full-time employment after graduation. “I like building landscapes, retaining walls, landscape lighting, all new skills I learned during my internship. “I was very happy with the instructors at SCC, as well as their placement program. After graduating I had three job opportunities thanks to SCC. I decided to accept the offer from Cummins Great Plains as a generator technician. This was a great opportunity because the position included Cummins factory training. During my 20 years of employment at Cummins I installed and troubleshot generators, paralleling gear, transfer switches, PLCs and communication networks. Nearly five years ago, I began employment at Google, and it has been a very exciting ride. In the beginning I was the generator lead assisting a team with maintaining equipment and communicating with other Googlers across the world to review issues and agree on repairs and upgrades. As a member of the Data Center Operations team, I have moved on to many other roles in my career. I have been involved with the mechanical team assisting with the operations and maintenance of chillers, cooling towers, water softeners and HVAC equipment. I spent a year as a commissioning lead, which involved managing and assisting teams testing all of the electrical and mechanical equipment in our new buildings. This process tests all the equipment to make sure that it is ready for critical operations. I am currently training for associate facility manager. I have also received two associate degrees from Southeast Community College. Without a doubt, I value my education from SCC above any other institution.
