LA TROBE’S CAMpUS NETWORK

La Trobe’s campus network

La Trobe University offers you the opportunity to study at a range of beautiful campuses in metropolitan and regional centres throughout Victoria, including Melbourne (Bundoora), Bendigo, Albury-Wodonga, Mildura and Shepparton. Altogether, La Trobe’s campuses deliver more than 400 undergraduate and postgraduate courses in a wide variety of disciplines to more than 26,500 students.

This guide provides a snapshot of the courses, opportunities and student culture at the five La Trobe campuses that offer undergraduate courses. Each has its own areas of expertise and provides its students with the benefits of a La Trobe education. Use the first part of this guide to discover what these benefits are, then read about each campus, and finally, see our courses by campus list and ‘how to find more information’ tips to discover more.

This guide is best used alongside our 2010 Undergraduate Course Guide, which provides extensive information on courses, application procedures and opportunities for scholarships and study exchanges. If you don’t have a copy, give us a call and we’ll send one out to you.

The Future Students Centre provides an information hotline to answer your enquiries about courses, costs, student services and anything else you want to know about studying at La Trobe. Feel free to get in touch any time. You can also sign up for our newsletters and email bulletins.

YOUR LA TROBE EXpERIENCE

Your La Trobe experience

At La Trobe we believe learning never stops, and we provide inspiring opportunities for all our students – in the classroom, on campus, in industry, and around the world. Students at all our campuses are given the opportunity to study overseas, take on leadership roles, gain work experience and enjoy a vibrant student culture.

We provide a highly supportive learning environment, dedicated to student-centred learning that equips you for your career and for life. We know people learn in different ways and have different needs, so we deliver our courses through various modes. This means your study may involve attending traditional face-to-face lectures and tutorials, using online or video-streamed resources, completing clinical training, going on field trips, experimenting in a laboratory, working in groups and individually, and doing industry work experience.

Facilities

At La Trobe we continually update our purpose-built teaching facilities to ensure they remain current. These facilities include research laboratories, health science clinics, computer labs, special collections and visual arts studios.

Teaching staff

Students at La Trobe work with the guidance of highly qualified lecturers and tutors, many of whom have extensive professional profiles and industry experience as well as outstanding track records in research. To see for yourself, look through our staff profiles on our faculty websites:

www.latrobe.edu.au/faculties

Library

When you’re studying it’s important to have a vast array of resources at your fingertips. As well as highly knowledgeable staff, La Trobe has a library collection of over 1.9 million items, including books, journals and electronic and audiovisual resources.

The library network is spread over all our campuses, and accessible online via the web-based catalogue.

A courier system operates between the campus libraries, so you can easily borrow from any location, and the Library offers comprehensive library training programs at each campus.

You can also access an ever-increasing array of electronic resources via password at any internet-connected computer, including online study skill tutorials.

For more information, visit: www.latrobe.edu.au/library

Work experience

Giving you a taste of the workforce in your chosen field is a key aspect of La Trobe’s undergraduate program. Through our strong connections with industry, we’re able to offer students a wide variety of work placements, clinical placements, internships and other types of industry experience.

For example, all health sciences students complete clinical placements with appropriate health providers, education students complete teaching practicums at a variety of schools, law students have the opportunity to work at community legal centres, and civil engineering students can apply for a series of scholarships which include paid work experience.

You can read more about industry experience in the 2010 Undergraduate Course Guide, and in our online course database at:

www.latrobe.edu.au/coursefinder

Student life: getting involved in the La Trobe community

Students tell us they enjoy their time here not only because of the quality of their courses but also La Trobe’s lively, friendly community spirit and wonderful campus environments. Studying at La Trobe makes you part of a close community – offering an exciting social and recreational life as well as perfect places for study.

The Student Guild is responsible for organising many of these activities, together with the clubs and student associations on each campus. Read more about La Trobe life at:

www.latrobe.edu.au/life

La Trobe also offers an exciting student engagement program to help ensure all students have the opportunity to become exceptional learners, workers, citizens and fully engaged members of the university community. Find out all about student engagement, including the new Infinity Leadership program, at:

www.latrobe.edu.au/students/student-engagement

In a 2009 national survey of university students conducted by Sweeney Research, La Trobe University was ranked one of Australia’s top three universities for student satisfaction, and the top university in Victoria for a balanced mix of education and fun.

At La Trobe we believe learning never stops. We provide inspiring opportunities for all our students – in the classroom, on campus, in industry, and around the world. How we support you

Starting university is an exciting and challenging experience, and students often need help with various aspects of uni life. La Trobe provides a wide range of services to ensure our students have the best possible support. These include:

• academicskillsassistance • accommodationservices • careerplanning • counselling • disabilitysupport • employmentassistance • financialaid • Indigenousstudentsupport • legaladvice

While the type of support staff available at each campus may vary, there’s always someone who can help you find the support you need. This may involve referring you to a partner organisation or arranging for staff from another campus to contact you.

The trick is to ask for help early, before a small issue becomes a really difficult one.

You can find more information on La Trobe’s student support services in our 2010 Undergraduate Course Guide, and at:

www.latrobe.edu.au/students

Rural and regional students get a bonusThe Rural and Regional Student Access Scheme (RRSAS) encourages students who’ve completed their VCE or HSC at a rural or regional school to take up tertiary studies at one of our regional campuses. The Scheme supports the growth of knowledge, skills and talent in regional areas.

Students from eligible schools who apply to undergraduate courses at any of La Trobe’s regional campuses through VTAC or UAC are considered automatically; there are no extra application forms to complete. The Scheme provides three bonus ENTER/UAI (or ATAR in 2010) points for applicants within the middle band.

To check your eligibility, look up your school at:

www.latrobe.edu.au/vtacinfo

Please note:

The RRSAS doesn’t apply to applicants to the Bachelor of pharmacy at La Trobe Bendigo. Applicants to this course are covered by a course-specific bonus scheme.

Also, the RRSAS is different to the Special Entry Access Scheme Category (SEAS) 6: Rural or Isolated Applicants.

This SEAS category is for students who’ve suffered educational disadvantage as a result of undertaking secondary schooling in a rural or isolated area and/or the need to move from such an area to undertake the university course of their choice. SEAS ensures all students affected by these disadvantages are given due consideration when applying to La Trobe University.

For more information on SEAS visit: www.latrobe.edu.au/vtacinfo

Scholarships

La Trobe offers generous scholarships for commencing undergraduate students, with many university-wide and faculty scholarships, and specific scholarships for regional and Indigenous students. For more information visit:

www.latrobe.edu.au/scholarships

Help with academic skills

Have you ever wondered how to cite references in academic essays? Are you nervous about what’s expected of you in a tutorial or worried about writing skills? Is English your second language?

The Language and Academic Skills Unit has staff at every campus to help you polish your study skills and achieve your study goals. You don’t even need to be enrolled to get a head start; you can find a fantastic collection of study resources on the Student Learning webpage at:

www.latrobe.edu.au/learning

Once you’re enrolled you can make regular appointments with staff or sign up for workshops.

Indigenous support

La Trobe University acknowledges Aboriginal people’s ongoing connection to the land upon which its campuses are located, and values the contributions Indigenous Australians make to its activities. It is committed to expanding educational opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

If you have any questions about applying to or studying at La Trobe as an Indigenous student, contact the Indigenous Recruitment Officer:

T 03 5444 7205 E [email protected]

Studying overseas

La Trobe has relationships with more than 100 universities around the world, making it easy to incorporate overseas travel into your studies – especially when every La Trobe student eligible to study overseas receives financial support for their exchange experience.

HOW WE SUppORT YOU

Library resources: Leigh Reither Bachelor of Arts

Shepparton campus

Shepparton’s library doesn’t have the same number of books as Bundoora, but we can do inter-campus loans – the same books are available to all La Trobe students. There’s also the library’s website, which lets you access journal articles and subject materials that lecturers leave for you.

Professional placements: Stephanie SuterBachelor of Science in Environmental Management and Ecology

Albury-Wodonga campus

I’ve just finished Honours, and have had many practical learning experiences. My cadetship at the end of second year was definitely a highlight. I worked for 12 weeks at the Murray-darling Freshwater Research Centre, assisting with a project on zooplankton, which was great research experience.

I got to write a scientific report which my supervisor said was really good, so he organised for me to present it at a conference in New Zealand – which was a real bonus. I also got part-time work at the research centre, which I am still doing!

Student Exchange: Justine RossBachelor of Laws / Bachelor of Arts,

Melbourne (Bundoora) campus

– Justine spent a semester at the Universidad Torcuato di Tella in Buenos Aires, Argentina, under La Trobe’s Student Exchange program.

I had uni three times a week, which allowed me to travel for long weekends to different parts of the country, or to nearby countries such as Uruguay and Chile.

The standard of work at my host university was high, and the quality of teaching similarly so. Studying in Spanish and living in Buenos Aires was invaluable to my Spanish speaking and writing skills. I also gained a heap of incredibly crazy and mind-blowingly amazing friends!

ESL support: Guler Ors Bachelor of Arts

Shepparton campus

My main issue is putting sources together in a proper format. I believe I am capable of giving the right answers verbally, but I have found putting answers on paper difficult.

I have found the ESL program to be very helpful; through correspondence via the internet, the ESL staff steered me in the right direction with my essays. I usually get high marks thanks to the ESL program.

Academic skills support: Katie BryceBachelor of Visual Arts

Bendigo campus

When I started my degree I wasn’t a big academic writing person. The Academic Skills Unit helps you work out what you’re supposed to do with grammar, strength of argument, structure; and you can see them each step of the way. If you get stuck they guide you to find the answer for yourself.

Kathryn GrayBachelor of Education

Mildura campus

Mildura is a lovely area with everything you could possibly need, and students here benefit from plenty of one-on-one time with lecturers, who are very helpful and supportive. And the library has a vast selection of resources, all easily accessible.

Everyone in my course and the community is so nice, which has helped make my transition smooth (I moved here from interstate). I want to become a primary school teacher, and my course is quite hands-on – I love the large variety of schools you can go to for practicum places, and they’re all so welcoming.

Melissa BeatonBachelor of Arts

Shepparton campus

My course is a generalist course, which means it can take you in so many directions – people don’t necessarily realise the endless possibilities it gives you.

One of the things I love about studying at the Shepparton campus is that the classes are small – it makes a lot of difference to have a lot of hands-on contact with lecturers. It’s close to home, too, and I can keep my job. I can also give back to the community, doing projects in the community for the university.

Joel ValenteBachelor of Psychological Science

Albury-Wodonga campus

Everything you need is here. The river and the pools are great in summer, there are heaps of pubs and clubs, and other things like snowboarding, water skiing and hiking all within a couple of hours’ drive.

And with the Wodonga Students’ Association, leadership is an option at your fingertips, whether in team-oriented tasks or representing peers in a student council.

Phillip RasoBachelor of Arts (Outdoor Education)

Bendigo campus

Bendigo is big enough to have everything you need, yet still has a great community feel. And La Trobe has a personal and intimate feel; you can easily become familiar with the campus, its facilities, the students, staff and admin.

I find it hard to nominate one highlight about my course – the whole School of Outdoor Education and Environment is a highlight! I’m already working, doing what I hoped I’d do when I graduate, because employers have been knocking on La Trobe’s doors asking for Outdoor Ed students.

Scott MacDonaldBachelor of Biological Sciences

Bendigo campus

La Trobe Uni is a great place to study because it has lots of friendly, easy-going people with great teachers, and one of the best things about la Trobe is the people from all different backgrounds you get to meet and become friends with.

The best thing about my course is the hands-on experience in the lab classes.

Waiting on image

Laura SchulzBachelor of Nursing

Albury-Wodonga campus

Our curriculum offers such a broad range of subjects so we are exposed to so many opportunities before we are qualified, allowing us to open even more doors to possible career paths. I love it!

I plan to specialise as a midwife or pediatric nurse and take my qualifications to Third World countries, looking after women and children.

Caitlin HigginsBachelor of Arts

Melbourne (Bundoora) campus

I transferred to La Trobe from Curtin University in WA after three years out of study. It’s exciting to be back on a campus and to be stretched intellectually.

I’ve found the lecturers to be enthusiastic and engaging and I look forward to exploring and discovering everything La Trobe has to offer.

Jay SmithBachelor of Accounting

Mildura campus

The Mildura campus is unique. There are smaller class sizes and greater class interaction, and I have never felt like a number. Just because you study at a rural university doesn’t mean you are at a disadvantage; in fact I see it as being a huge advantage. It’s a closeknit community, the people are friendly, and I get to stay close to my family.

The Bachelor of Accounting gives you the knowledge and skills to become a leader, allows you to undertake part of your studies overseas, and equips you to work in any industry.

Abby LangBachelor of Laws / Bachelor of Arts

Bendigo campus

La Trobe Bendigo has everything I need to help me with my studies. The library’s open from early in the morning to late at night seven days a week; computer labs are open early as well. If I need to use the internet I can just come up to uni and do all my emails and everything. All the social support services I need are here as well.

And one thing I’ll remember about Bendigo when I leave is all the friends I’ve made here – such a close-knit community means they’re friends for life.

Chris MingeBachelor of Business

Shepparton campus

I find what we’re learning in this course really useful – we cover such a wide range of subjects. The teachers are really good, too; they’re very experienced and extremely helpful.

I chose to study at the Shepparton campus mainly because I’m still living at home, and it means I can save some money. But I also enjoy the small classes and the opportunities to get to know people well.
