Through the unique experience of Echo Hill, our formhas started a foundation for friendships that will last alifetime. After the awkwardness of getting used to livingso closely with unfamiliar people, the third form has suc-ceeded in adjusting to life at SAS. Through the closenessof corridor life, conversations in Moss and Pell commonrooms, and fun filled Saturday nights, our class hasformed a bond which will continue to build throughoutour years here as SAS. Just think, only three years to go.

Being the largest class in the school, this year'sfourth form was fortunate to have such a diverseand talented group of students. The class adjustedwell to almost doubling in size, and accomplishedmuch together during this incredible year. Theform's major feat was the semi-formal, which wasa huge success thanks to the form advisors, Mr.Bates and Mrs. Stegeman. They helped make ouryear both enjoyable and memorable. This fourthform class definitely proved themselves to be a sig-nificant part of the school through their manyambitious endeavors. Their contributions to theschool have already made beneficial changes, andthey have only just begun.

It hit us hard, but after all the ups anddowns (including a record setting number ofsick/mental health days) the Fifth Form hasproven its importance to SAS. In between ourbusy academic and social schedules, we'vefound time to supply the student body withDomino's Pizza every Tuesday and Fridaynights. Using the '96 epidemic, the fifth formturned a tragedy into a long sleeve, navy blueT-shirt for the weary survivors. We await thedays of no breakfast sign-in, no waitingtables, giving out the marks and stepping intoour roles as leaders of this fine establishmentwe call home.

The special events of the year are whatkeep the spice in our lives and the adrenalinepumping through our veins despite the bestefforts of the blood drive to drain us dry.

CorridorLife
You have entered an-other dimension. A dimen-sion beyond sight andsound. A dimension wheremusical tastes ranging fromcountry to techno vie fordominance. A dimensionknown as ... The TwilightZone? -wellalmost. It's thecorridor, where hall-la-crosse, corridor wrestling, and the crinkling o/Tostitos® bags are set tothe background music ofeither Monty Python'sSearch for the Holy Grailor Sixteen Candles, eachmaking its fiftieth consecu-tive showing in the com-mon rooms. Yes, corridorlife. Probably the most de-finitive aspect of SaintAndrews, the corridor isnot only a Lord of the Fliestype environment but alsowhere the strongest bondsof friendship are formed(hey, nothing tears downbarriers like communalshowers). It is not just aliving quarter but a placewhere ties of loyalty (notunlike those in The God-father) are formed to carryyou through your tour ofduty in the land ofcornfields and coldweather.

Last year, Voorhees corridor was inhabited by a fearsome and lawless gang of students. While it is rumored that a balding and bookish faculty member was charged with main-taining order on the hall, it appears that he was quickly overwhelmed and broken by thenatives. But as the year ended, the outlaws migrated back downstairs and were succeededthis fall by a new band of gently, yet rugged young men hell-bent on restoring Voorhees'once proud name. Inspired by brightly-colored name tags and a birthday chart, the lads suc-ceeded in bringing the corridor back to its glory days. Yet their appreciation for crayons andconstruction paper was not to be mistaken for weakness. No, they were also a rough andready bunch. One should not have been surprised to find a majority of the corridor, someblisteringly cold Sunday afternoon, sawing lumber or practicing auto repair. In short,Voorhees '96-'97 was a new breed of male corridor — a Renaissance corridor really — asadept at emotional and childish artistic expression as fishing, carpentry and brick-laying.

don't know what to do ... Seniors?" -Miss. Terhune"There is no explanation for this! You're going to have to pay! Go get your running shoes, a towel, your
debit card, a notebook and pen, and a bathing suit. NOW!!" -Holly FlingStumbling out of the door, articles in hand, and blindfolds around their eyes, the Juniors were led into the
wilderness of the 96-97 school year by the Seniors of M Dorm. From day one we exposed the new "gully girls"to M with colorful erect balloons prodding their environment. From the Monday night movie (She CriedNo), to Days of our Lives, the gang stuck together. We kept the dorm nourished with undercooked cake andnachos and salsa, and after putting everyone to bed, the Seniors were entertained with Checkers and Domi-noes ...
Whether it was clogging and lip synching on upper or jazz dancing and sleeping on lower, there wasalways LOTS of food. And the dorm stuck together through complaint after complaint. We want to wish youthe best of luck next year to ...

SherwoodA wise man once said, "There's nothing better than a fine group of men who spend their days frolicking in the
forest, seizing all of the pleasures that life has to offer." That wise man was Granville Hudson Sherwood IV. Thispast year we have upheld the tradition of superiority that Sherwood Corridor has always displayed since thefounding of this beloved institution. Never before has such a sundry crew of 27 men been assembled. With Batmanat the helm, there's no other place on the St. Andrew's Campus where the fine young women yearn to pass theirdays and nights than Sherwood Corridor. While callow youths neighboring corridors aspire to converse with theirfemale counterparts, the stallions of Sherwood waste no time with such simple talk. Indeed we are Gods among meremortals. We are His gift. Although the words, "Their girth and heft can be no larger," have been said almost toofrequently, we continue to amaze even ourselves with new feats of manhood. We would like to thank all of thosewho enabled us to rise to the challenge this past year. Granville, I hope we have done you Proud.

n keeping with the fine tradition that has grown immortal over the years on Baum Corridor, wenaged to maintain an absolutely disgusting bathroom throughout the year. Coming into the:hroom on Sunday morning is always a special treat. But regardless of the corridor conditions, urn men have excelled academically and in the extracurricular arena making exceptional contribu-ns to athletics. Though our corridor was first plagued by a faculty "conspiracy" to bring to justice: wielders of a "supposed" paddle, the corridor had no other noteworthy problems. (To this day:re is no evidence that the paddle ever existed.) At this point in our pithy summation of the years useful to turn to the words of our fearless mentor Chester Baum who is rumored to have oncenarked, "Underformers come to Baum as mere boys, but under the guidance of Baum seniors leavemen.

Ode To The FacultyO teachers of this sacred placeWho cherish every student's face,As in Heath's Schools of Hope,You are the ideal; you help us cope.
For twenty years of J. Bob's reign"Way to look!" boomed at every game. Our faculty has aged with grace and stead,Despite John Austin's balding head.
As the spazing Speers' kids beat theirtummies,
Will's Food Committee made ARA yummy. He ripped down our tapestries and stole our
lamps,But the HRA rebelled with a mighty stamp.
G. Lindsay roamed the halls at nightEquipped with headlamp and flashlight."Put down the cookie where you stand!"This was the Honor Committee's demand.
We love you, dear Tad for winter's extrahalf-hour
Which cut back the blahs and made time <showers. The Internet is up and running strong,Despite long announcements from Stegie
and Wang.
And for those who are leaving we bid youfarewell:
Well miss you dear Mad Dog and WallyLiefield.
In your own special ways, two mentorsyou've been.

Another fall, another conference ti-tle, another knee injury, another firstround loss in the state tournament. Bynow these are all expected, but we hadmore than our fair share of surprise.Payne's decision to stay at St.Andrew's and play soccer, Craghill's"accident," and Rue's questionabledisappearance. Although we neverreached our full potential as a result ofthe injuries we suffered, we still hadan enormously successful season. Ourteam spirit carried us through the sea-son and allowed us to compile animpressive record of 9-2-5. This teamloses a lot of seniors, but there is stilla great possibility of winning a fourthconference title.

Women's SoccerA Record Breaking Team
Women's soccer would have rockedthe shiny red van this year, except weonly had one away game. Fueled bythe power of 31 talented singer/ath-letes, the team near ly wentundefeated, hampered only by thesweet, f a i r -p l ay ing angels ofGermantown Academy. Inspired, asusual, by Mr. Rue's "no you don't geta water break" fitness test, the teamwent on to break almost every recordin the history of women's soccer atSAS (next year we're challenging UNCto a pick-up game). Under the instruc-tion of Bobby Rue, SAS women's soc-cer finally overcame the tradition ofmuteness and learned how to out com-municate every team we played. Ourpoint is that SAS women's soccerplayers kick butt. An SAS women'ssoccer player can leap tall buildings ina single bound, cook spaghetti usingonly her toes and can out sprint Pele. She can do your self portrait usingnothing but spray paint, she'll christenyour field, and has perfected the bicy-cle kick. She has saved the world fromnuclear war, during half-time shestruts the runways of Paris, she couldbench press Mr. Hyde, and she canfull-tilt-boogie from here to L.A. Wewonder what this talented team willdo without the superb and authorita-tive leadership of their two captains.Whomp Bootay next year, y'all. We'llmiss you. Love, Page and Lindsay.

Our record was apoor indication of our intensity andhunger (did someone say "pizza"???).The defense was formidably solid, themidfield was unstoppable, and thefront line was versatile, tenacious, andtraveled at roughly the speed of light. In a dramatic overtime, we earnedvictory over the no. 7 ranked Wil-mington Christian, and went on to tiethe no. 5 ranked St. Mark's. Despitethe losing steak which stained ourrecord, we never lost our sense ofhumor, our love of the game, or ourlove for each other. We were the moralvictors, and we'll remain winners inour hearts forever . . .
We'd like to thank Mrs. Bride andMrs. Chilton for their undying sup-port, encouragement, and patience. For their concerned devotion to thedeterioration of our nutritional intake,we'd also like to thank our managerKatie Thomson, our coaches, and ourobsessively supportive parents.

FootballAs usual our undersized
football program did not ac-curately record her marvelouswill to dominate her opposingfoes. Led by six loving, caringseniors, the program was nur-tured and sustained and"hung tough" though thebleakest of battles. Thoughmultiple journeys to the Phil-adelphia orchestra and theballet these fine players man-aged to develop a sense ofbeauty and grace and carriedthese attributes to the grid-iron. For example, As KirkKieffer hurled the pigskin intothe waiting hands of such deftreceivers as Frank Reynoldsand Geoff Dewire, Phil Pinchand John Landay mashed theirwar bonnets with those of thePhilistine enemy. Augmentedby such fiercely legged backsas Andrew "Steamroller"Smith and Caleb "the Pun-isher" Prescott the Saints didforce their vile opponents intopronated submission (some-times). The occasional illegalspear into the lower back of anunsuspecting quarterback wasnot an infrequently pursuedtask of George Hutton's. Thelotus of our glorious seasonbloomed enormous, chantingcrowds bore witness to themassacres of the PrincetonDay School and WestNotingham Acadamy on ourpart, and Mr. Hyde and Mr.Colburn did scream with war-rior passions as Mr. Lieb nod-ded in sinister disapproval ofCoach Fogelman's attire andthe atrocious misdeeds andcalls of the blind and ignorantreferees.

Men'sCross-Country
This year the men's cross countryteam had a successful season of racing.Under the coaching of Mr. Brown andthe "Duff Dog" the team managed toend the season ranked fourth in thestate after three months of gruelingwork. The team would like to espe-cially thank Mr. Duffy for his intensework on the most important musclesin cross country, the pectorals, whichproved to be invaluable later in theseason during the annual "Coaches vs.Team" bench press competition.
During the season, the team trav-eled far and wide to race against otherschools. The team would like to thankthe coaches for their safe and courte-ous chauffeuring without which thesemeets would not have been possible.Although the team did not reign victo-rious at every one of these away meets,we rest assured that our coaches couldhave beaten our competitor's coaches.
Finally, the team would like tothank all our loyal supporters. In yearspast the rumor had been spread thatcross country was not an interestingsport to watch. Luckily, this year onaverage we had a few hundred specta-tors at our home meets. Your supportis greatly appreciated and we will seeyou next year for a few seconds as werun by.

VolleyballThe '96 Volleyball season marks
the beginning of a strong program inthe years to come. Despite the harass-ment the volleyball players face atSAS, a remarkable 25 brave studentsbought knee pads, AA batteries forB.S. ventilators, and gave up sun-light. This season's record was notfantastic, nor did it show the teamsathleticism and potential. But sinceso many players are returning, thisseason is only a building block to sur-pass. Out of the 25 players 23 will beback again depriving themselves ofsunlight to strengthen the program. We wish y'all the best of luck.Love your captains, VE and SerenaP.S.-Watch out for Mr. Smith andthose water buckets!
Even with only two returning varsplayers, this year's team carriedthe "yay" tradition.

This year's basketball seasonhad a stellar season. Under theleadership of Coach Bobby Rueand Captains Kirk Kieffer andCaleb Prescott, the team im-proved immensely throughoutthe season and showed greatunity..
Clearly, our record does notreflect the success we experi-enced as a team. However, weare a young team and are look-ing to forward to the leadershipof the juniors next year. Suchstars as MVP Jeff Rosenthal andCoach's Award Recipients SuliJenkins and Frank Reynoldslead the Saints to greatness. Weonly hope they can aspire to thelevel of leadership exemplifiedby Rox Veghte.
The team would especiallylike to thank Mr. Hyde, all ofthe spectators at our nightgames,, and the humorous an-nouncements by our Thirdsbasketball team.

Dynamic and energetic aretwo words to describe thisyears Varsity Women's squashteam. Although four of theteam members were new tosquash this year, our team wasstrong and charismatic. Our"smooth moves", impeccable"fwacking", and our exhaust-ing floor routines were alladmirable aspects of this sea-son. Not only did we illustratesuperior squash skills this year, but we also exhibited greatpotential for paddle tennis anddoubles squash. We would liketo thank Mrs. Chilton for all hercommitment to the team.Despite our long road trips andinsatiable appetites, Mrs.Chilton was a dedicated andinspiring coach. Each teammember can agree that ourcloseness and humor madethis season memorable.

Squash had a good year, wewon some and we lost some. Idon't remember our recordsbecause we spent so much timein the van. You're probably notparticularly interested in oursquash season so we'll makethis synopsis brief. The teamwas led by the Napoleonic Mr.Denning who often becamefrustrated with anything butthe supreme effort. It was a sea-son plagued by tactical mis-takes, such as when Mr. Den-ning, who had problemsfalling asleep at the wheel, asked Jeff to ride shotgun forconversation. Even so, JeffGable shared the coachesaward with Carter Grant, andRandolph McEvoy had thesupreme distinction of beingmost valuable player whileCharlie Durkin was awardedthe most improved.

Women's Swimming And Diving
" ... Would the St. Andrew's Coachplease report behind the blocks ... Itappears that one of your swimmers ishaving difficulty breathing ..." Thisseason was the best yet for theWomen's Swimming Program at St.Andrew's. Although the team wasfrequented by asthma attacks andsickness, our team managed to pulltogether and finish with a tenth-place state rank.
Our secret psyche buddies helpedget us to our 10-2 finish this season.Who can forget Jessi strutting aroundthe State meet in nothing but herbathing suit, socks, and shoes whileSarah convulsed in the warm-downpool in an attempt to catch her breath.Or the time driver Meaghan Keeleysucked it up to swim the relay, laugh-ing all the way. Although thewomen's team never enjoyed nakedWar Ball like the boys did, we still feelwe became close through our groupbreathing sessions and really infor-mative meeting with a food doctor.
Many records have been broken, and many more will fall under theleadership of our new captains, AnneWillis and Beth Calder. Good luckwith the asthma — we'll miss you!
Love Katie, Meredith, and Alii.

The success of a season is notmerely determined by winsand losses. While the Men'sSwim Team finished the season9-3 in dual meets, won its thirdconsecutive DISC, champi-onship, and achieved its firsttop ten ranking in the state theteam was successful in manyother and more importantways. This team formed anextremely cohesive bond thatwas based upon mutualrespect and tenacity, these menalso possessed a strong loyaltyand affinity for each other andtheir collective goals. It was thewill of this team through stren-uous training and desire to winthat allowed its success. Thisteam came to understand whatthe true definition of team isthrough its selfless acts and thesupport it gave to each mem-ber. This is the best swim teamSt. Andrew's has ever had andit has a bright future ahead of it.Good luck next season.

was something that lay under the sun and felt it, like the pumpkins, and I didn't want to belything more. I was entirely happy. Perhaps we feel that way when we die and become a part ofjmething entire, whether it is sun and air, or goodness and knowledge. At any rate, that isappiness; to be dissolved into something complete and great. When it comes to one, it comes asaturally as sleep.

At that moment, I knew surely and clearly, that I was witnessingperfection. THE LAKE ISLE OF INNISFREE
I will arise and go now, and go to Innisfiree,And a small cabin build there, of clay and wattles
made:Mine bean-rows will I have there, a hive for the
honeybee,And live alone in the bee-loud glade.
And I shall have some peace there, for peace comesdropping slow.
Dropping from the veils of the morning to where thecricket sings;
There midnight's all a glimmer, and noon a purpleglow,
And evening full of the linnet's wings.
I will arise and go now, for always night and dayI hear lake water lapping with low sounds by the shore; While I stand on the roadway, or on the pavements
grey,I hear it in the deep heart's core,

"With the falling of leaves, the masks of green are stripped off the hillsides, revealing the diversity and uniqueness of each ridge and valley, rock andstream, old shed or oil well hitherto unseen. It is in the winter when the hillsbare their innermost selves, that we get to know them. Then, in the spring, when the masks return, we can look at the hills as old friends few othersunderstand. So it is with people. Most of the time we wear our masks. Butduring the difficult times, during the winters of our lives, we shed thefacades and reveal the intricacies of the unique beings we are. It is in thesemoments that friendships are formed, and we experience one another as fewothers ever will." -John W. Walker

If you can keep your head when all about youAre losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated don't give way to hating,And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream- and not make dreams your master; If you can think and not make thoughts your aim.
If you can meet with Triumph and DisasterAnd treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spokenTwisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,And stoop and build'em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings; And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginningAnd never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinewTo serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in youExcept the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,Or walk with Kings-nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minuteWith sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,And-which is more-you'll be a Man, my son!

one encounters many characters
some emitting many shades ol gray
others sparkling light.
From the instant you appeared
shades ol wonderous lights have lilled
our house and hearts.
Oiving us numerous opportunities to
bask in the clouds ol smiles
that were always heavy with Kind
innocent laughter and carelree joyousness.
I pray as you grow that your light
sails into many homes and hearts
bringing to them this gilt that is typically

It's three o'clock in the morning, two days after spring break started andnone of us have started packing yet. As the cockroaches scurry across thefloor in front of us in the yearbook office, ants crawl through the keys of mypower book, the same mix plays over and over, and we don't care becausethis is the final page of the '97 Griffin and we're finally done. Enjoy everyone of the 228 pages. Good night.

Finally we are in the new theater and its beautiful except for therows of boxes piled high on the front of the stage. Since its Monday ofTech Week, we perform behind them. Tuesday- boxes gone. Wednes-day- "we can't get the sound board turned on and I still don't knowhow to write light cues on the new board." Thursday- "aren't thereelectrical sockets backstage anymore?" Friday- Despite the chaos of theweek, we open (with two professionals in the booth just in case) andwe are a hit. The big thrill came Saturday when Lucille Fletcher, authorof Sorry, Wrong Number joined us on stage for a bow. Congratulationscast and crew.

Women's Lacrossei ,
This years lax team proved thatthey could win - finishing the season#1 in the state with a 16-0 record andalso proved that they could have a lotof fun along the way. Speed, aggres-sion, teamwork, and intensity led theoffense while a solid defense that was"up close and personal" shut downmany strong teams such as TowerHill (for the first time in the history ofthe program). The lax team got toknow the big red vans and improvedtheir communication skills ("Stop!")while traveling to Hilton Head, St.Agnes/St. Stephens, and Easton. While disappointed by the absence ofa state tournament, the B.I.G. in-spired the team to strive to be unde-feated. With the loss of only 3 seniors, the women's lax team "could go allthe way" again next season.

Men's LacrosseThis years lax team had a lot of potential. With
John Landay at the helm The Saints stormed overmany conference teams including Friends,Westown and Sanford. Unfortunately the lax teamwasn't ever at full throttle with Landay forced to sitout of some games, and Than Rohrbach out all sea-son due to a back injury. However next year theSaints' attack will dominate the field with Sam Cox,Than, and the two freshmen starters AndrewMeeks, and Slates Snider. This team has created agreat stepping stone for next year, with such re-turning players as Kai Newkirk, Steve Reynolds,Mike Cordeiro, Ivan Watkins in the goal, DanMones, and Jeff Rosenthal. This years middies wereled by a first year senior, Andy Smith. His excellentface-offs led to many-a-fastbreak goal. Mike willsurely fill his shoes.

BaseballDespite the disappointing end to
the 1997 season, the baseball teamplayed a strong season in which theyfought to achieve a 5-3 record in theconference and a 8-10 record overall. The highlights of the 1997 seasonwere the game against West Notting-ham at Frawley Stadium and the fiveplayers who received all conference:Chip Herr '97, Phil Pinch '97, KirkKieffer '97, and Geoff DeWire '98were first team all conference andPaul Burnette '98 was awarded sec-ond team all conference. Also ChipHerr made second team All-State, andGeoff DeWire made honorable men-tion All-State. Next years team willmiss the three seniors, but there aremany returning players who will helpto field a strong team. The baseballteam would like to thank all the helpfrom alumni and parents for theirtime and support. They would espe-cially like to thank Mr. Colburn for allhis dedication, patience, leadership, and understanding. 1998 will surelybe a great year!

Women's CrewThe women's crew team had an excel-
lent season this year. The new Varsity 8,the Bradford D. Bates, sent the girls flyingpast many other crews in the country. TheSenior 8, led by six seniors, had a lot of de-termination and desire for a successful sea-son. They won the New Jersey Champion-ship, the MidHudson Championships, andfor the first time since the mid-80's, theywon the TC Williams and the Kent Schoolrace. At the Stotesbury Regatta, theyfought through the rough winds and waterto place second. The Women's Senior Eighthas the honor to attend the women's Hen-ley Regatta in England this summer. Goodluck!
Although the Varsity 8 had an amazingseason, the Junior 8 definitely scared awaymany other crews by their 20 second leads. They won the New Jersey Championships, and placed second at both Stotesbury andthe Scholastic Regatta held at St. Andrew's,We all look forward to see what you willdo next year!
The Senior 4's strength and drive leadthem to place in the top 10 at the Stotes-bury Regatta, and the freshmen lead bycoaches Stephen Lord and Jim Bride, alsohad a great season. They showed a iot ofpotential for the following years.
The team was controlled by the numer-ous seniors. We all respect your love forcrew. You will be missed.

Men's Crew
This year's men's varsity crewteam enjoyed great success atboth the first and second boatlevels. The men's first boat re-turned five rowers from a fastboat last year and several rowersstepped up to provide intensecompetition for every last seat inthe varsity eight. The first boathad its ups and downs in theregular season, never winning arace. Once the regatta seasonbegan, however, this boat roseto a new level, winning the newJersey Scholastic Champion-ships, the Mid-Hudson Regatta, and taking third at Stotesbury. The crew pushed itself even fur-ther to beat Bonner and finishsecond to St. Joe's Prep by 1 sec-ond at the Scholastic Nationalsheld at home on NoxontownPond, qualifying for the USRow-ing Youth Invitational regatta inCincinatti, Ohio. The crew willalso be racing at the prestigiousHenley Royal Regatta on theThames River in England.
The second boat also sput-tered some in the regular sea-son, but, like the first boat, rowed an outstanding race atNew Jersey's, winning by sev-eral lengths. At the Stotesburysecond boat was clearly the fa-vorite, being the fastest boat onpaper by far, but they finishedfifth, succumbing to the harshconditions seen aM weekend.
Clearly this year was a greatone for both boats in the men'screw program. We will sorelymiss the five seniors who aregraduating from the first boatand the five seniors from thesecond boat. We are, however, expecting another strong yearnext year with a tough group ofunderformers that will undoubt-ably rise to the challenge again.

Women's Tennis
Whether in Hilton Head or Middletown,Varsity Girl's Tennis showed determination, poise, and enthusiasm. Despite the innercompetition the Pictionary cause, we bondedas a team as we sampled weekly brownierecipes. One of the highlights of the seasonwas our rematch against undefeated TowerHill, led by notorious Sue and her "unreli-able" freshmen. Through an amazing teameffort we won the match. Yes, St. Andrew'shas taught us not to hold grudges; thus, wehave forgotten the newspaper for neglectingto acknowledge this victory.
Thanks to Cristin for her enthusiasm andsupply of gummy bears and to Kate Wilkin-son for her success as the only freshman onthe team. Good luck Kate playing Wallis,Nina, and Arusha for the next three years. Thanks to Kate Werble for creating her ownchapter in THE RULES regarding propertennis attire and to Laura for modeling a dif-ferent tennis outfit every practice. Also wewould like to thank Kathryn for always mak-ing us laugh and putting up with Fran fortwo years. We are proud of Pringle for deal-ing with Megan Dencker, and we are proudof Alex for dealing with Lonita (a.k.a. "themouth") and her hair.
Endless thanks to Mrs. Terhune for help-ing coach us this year; we know you willcontinue to do a great job in the years tocome. To Mrs. Roach, you made this seasonunforgettable through your humor, dedica-tion, and love for the sport. We will miss youmore than you can ever know! This year varsity tennis had sur-prising potential with new startersAmol Parikh, Michael Harney, andJohn Stephens. With this combinationof experienced players filling ourline-up we were next to unstoppableonly losing to Tatnail twice and Sal-lies once. With a combined record of9-3 we went into the state tourna-ment with high hopes, but certain cir-cumstances, like the draw, hurt ourchances. As a year of growth we sawmany players make progress, whilesome regressed. Rox Veghte, alwaysthe shining example of maturity andsportsmanship, became the recipientof the "Coach s Award." Such strangeevents rarely happen twice in oneseason, but this is guy's tennis andwe are quite unpredictable. Maybe itwas the grueling warm up runs, orthe exhausting practice that humbleeven the rowers, but something pos-sessed Michael Harney this season.Maybe one "good day' as Will put it,but after clawing his way onto theteam Harney put all doubters toshame with excellent play throughoutthe season. We had one undefeatedteam during the season, when theyplayed together, John and Charlie, who were 12-0 against the best com-petition in the state and were the de-ciding match in many matches. Forthe third straight year Emmett Lyns-key drove more opponents to insan-ity at 1 singles beating even the de-fending state champion. Losing onlytwo seniors next year is quite promis-ing. Of course we cannot completesuch an article without paying tributeto Denning who guided us through-out the season and will be leaving usout to dry in the next one. Thank youfor your guidance and good luck.
