BE THE BEST

If you can't be the pine on the top of the bill Be a scrub in the valley - but be

The best little scrub by the side of the bill. Be a bush if you can't be a tree.

If you can't be a bush, be a bit of the grass, And some highway happier make.

If you can't be a 11muskie," then just be a bass, But the liveliest bass in the Jake.

We can't all be captains, some have to be crew, There's something for all of us here;

There's work to be done, and we've all got to do Our part in a way that's sincere.

If you can't be a highway, than just be a trail; If you can't be the sun, be a star;

It isn't by size that you win or you fail; Be the best of whatever you are!

Charlie Mills, Principal

There will always be disappointments and setbacks along with tbe triumphs, but still progress goes on, and students who conquer tbe challenge of Hempstead High School will be the richer for the experience.

The year 1980 kicks off a decade of challenge and opportunity wbicb will no doubt surpass our most imaginative expectations.

The Class of 1980, weaned on the rebellious '60's and boned on tbe belt-tightened '70's, are ready to meet these years of challenge. These students have matured in a world troubled by international unrest, inflation, energy shortages and economic strife. They know there are no free rides.

Hempstead High School takes pride in having participated in their journey into adulthood. We extend warm wishes to the Class of 1980 knowing they will find tbe means to cope effectively with their world.

In Retrospect In our four years here, we have experienced many changes. HHs was a part of these changes.

New friends in a new School Co-ed Gym/swimming the arrival of new teachers the exit of others a new dean of girls Participating in the 1st district Christmas

festival. Sneaking out to smoke between classes. New rules and regulations. Loss of one boy/girl friend, the gain of

another. Struggling through Mrs. Fitzpatrick's

English 11R class.

Running through the balls at break neck speed to reach Mr. Smernoff's class on time.

Experiencing first Jove. and even the simple change of growing from Freshman to senior. In adapting to those changes, we enlarged our realm of experience.

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff:

My years at Hempstead High have been very happy ones. I have gained much knowledge and maturity. My friendships with both students and teachers have enhanced my experiences.

Being Senior Class President has been very challenging. The help and support of those special people, who always were willing to help, made the job much easier.

To the under graduates, I'd like to say, ~'keep the faith" and always strive for excellence.

In closing, I'd like to express my thanks to everyone who bas made these 4 years at Hempstead High ones I'll always cherish.

DEDICATION

Mr. Maurice Joseph Levin

Mr. Levin, ''there is nothing" that can be said by us, the faculty and student body of Hempstead High School, that will express our deep gratitude and respect for you.

Throughout your thirty-one hard-working, dedication-filled years in the Hempstead School District, you have, indeed, held many notable positions and acquired honorable titles.

In your positions of Assistant Science Chairman, Curriculum Consultant to the Department, Chairman of the Science Department, District Science Coordinator, District Drug Abuse Coordinator, Development and Research Representative the Boces, and, for the past five years, teacher of chemistry: you, Mr. Levn, have touched the lives of many people, big and small, in various ways. Bowling coach, chief advisor to Senior class, announcer at football games, timekeeper at basketball games, and track official; these, too, are just some of the many additional positions to which you have greatl.v contributed your wide-ranged talents.

Since 1949, you have brightened the lives of many with your sinceri(l', generosity, humor, and knowledge. It is for your wonderful personality and extraordinary characteristics that we love you, respect you, and are eternally gratefull for the good fortune of having you with us for so man.v enriching years.

Mr. Maurice Joseph Levin, it is with extreme pleasure to honor you by dedicating this 1980 yearbook to a man that is so very great, so indescribable .. you.

JUNIORS

Judging by what we've seen this year, we are sure that the 1981 graduating class will be a credit to our school.

Now on their third step toward graduation, the knowledge and experience they have gained thus far will help them greatly when next year they take over the full responsibility as leaders of our school.

One of the highlights, of the year was the Talent show sponsored by the Junior class which took place in the spring to the year. The Talent show provided students with an opportunity to demonstrate their unusual talents in the area of the performing arts, and provided us with some excellent entertainment.

The Juniors were also busy ordering their class rings, taking the PSAT'S and numerous other Begents exams.

The Juniors have been very fortunate in having Rev. Jones as their advisor to assist them with their problems and activities. These activities united their class, strengthened and created friendships, and fostered memories that will never be forgotten.

SOPHOMORES

THE SOPHOMORE CLASS

Having finally been oriented to High School life, the Sophomore class demonstrated its ability to have an outstanding class.

One of the most important events on the class's calendar was the election of officers.

Under the leadership and guidance of their advisor Mrs. P. Reed, the Sophomores sold candles and stuffed animals as their yearly fund raising activity and closed their year with a Dance-A-Thorne.

With half of their school career already a thing of the past, the Sophomores still have much to look forward to.

THE FRESHMEN CLASS

Obviously somewhat camera shy, the Freshmen started their long climb toward their senior year.

They quickly became an active part of our school population. Most of their time was spent learning bow to conduct meetings and parlimentary procedure. Participation in our baby day activities was a over whelming success this year. Remember those unique costumes in October.

The winners of the Baby Day competition were: Best All Around Baby, Jona Wimbesb; Best Baby Talk, Gena Clifford; Best Original Talk, Racbael Hightower; Best Disco Baby, Leroy Flowers; Best Family, (1) Jerome Fernandez, Stephanie Pettis, and Jose Antigua (2) Allen Walker, Anne Brown, and Pam Hightower; Best Look Alike, Barbra Drew and Cberyle Bettis; Best Smile, Sberell Goldston; Best Dress, Darell Durant; Best Toy, Detra Goode and Aleyab Nassa; Best Father, Teddy Hayes; and Best Mother, Anita Eason.

HEMPSTEAD HIGH BAND

The Hempstead High School Band was our school's best publicity agent. Their agenda, as usual, bas been very busy. During the fall months, members of the Hempstead High Band, under the direction of Mr. Samuel Littlejohn, were busy practicing for their annual bandsbow which was performed during the half-time of every home football game.

This year, the band bad the honor of presenting their show at Hofstra University competing in the annual Newsday Band Festival, playing tunes reminiscent of the 70's.

The band also entertained us with it's fantastic performances in the St. Patricks Day and Columbus Day Parades. The marching band students participated in the concert band throughout the entire school year.

TWIRLERS

The Hempstead High School Twirlers experienced an increase in both the number of twirlers, and the number of fans this year.

The twirlers stepped onto the field at half time and performed their spirited and inspiring renditions of 11Knock on Wood" and 11Best of My Love".

123

Conductor, Mr. Ken Muller

Orchestra

Sectionals, Sectionals, Sectionals! What are they? Just ask any band or orchestra student and you will get the answer.

To these students, one of the most gratifying periods of the school day is orchestra during zero period. During that period the students Jearn the fundamentals of music both as a science and as an art.

The one person who should be given credit for the wonderful concerts and for the orchestra's prestige is their director, Mr. Ken Muller. He is assisted by the entire music faculty who serve the whole district: Adrienne Charash and Barbara Sepe, Strings; Mrs. Jeredythe Muller, Flute; Reginald Johnson, Brass.

Climaxing the years appearances, the orchestra combined with the choir and band give its annual spring concert.

In saluting their work this year, we can say that they performed admirably and competently, as always.

CHOIR

Again this year, the HHS Choir bas maintained its fine reputation as being one of the best bigb school chorus in the county. To become a member of the HHS Acapella choir is to join a closely knit family.

This was a group whose only purpose was to express beauty through the Universal language of music.

Every member of the choir is extremely proud, not only of the ability of the group itself, but also of the music they perform, so inspiringly. A great deal of bard work and enjoyment is shared in every class and at every concert.

The choir's success can be traced to its director, Ms. Joy Peterson who gives her time and talent for the success of the choir.

THE DRAMA CLUB

The Drama Club, alias the 4th Wall Players, once again brought success to the stage of Hempstead High School.

With their various outstanding talents, the members of the Drama Club banded together to perform magnificiently two wonderful plays; 11The Me Nobody Knows" and 11Raisin".

Under the direction of Mr. R. Russo, the club members learned and perfected and assortment of dramatic techniques which they so vividly exhibited in their performances.

This year's student council officers are: President Wanda Bostick, Vice President Alician Hawkins, Treasurer Lisa Howard, Secretary IInne Brown, and Corresponding Secretary Andre Butler. These four officers Jed it's members in many student council activities.

The main events on the student government's agenda were the annual homecoming and baby day activities. Fund raising was not a major concern of the Student Council, but was necessary for sponsoring activities.

In an effort to encourage school spirit, the Student Council sponsored a Spirit Week. During Spirit Week, each day of the week was assigned a specific theme and the students were encouraged to attend school dressed in the appropriate costume.

For college bound students, SAT classes were instituted to insure higher scores on the exam.

CADETTES

We are the Hempstead Marine Aviation Cadets, better known as the Macs. We strive to build pride within ourselves and the school. It's not easy being a Cadet. You have to learn to train your mind as well as your body. Not everyone can cope with the rigid training and so choose to drop out. What we have left is an elite group of young people who are learning to be our future leaders.

MARINE ECOLOGY CLUB

The Marine Ecology Club encourages students to plan and participate in field studies. Students spend much of their time on charterboats in the Freeport area. Members of the club use data they collect to enter Science contests such as the Long Island Science Fair. Other students are exposed to the recreational aspects of the program such as fishing. Under the direction of their advisor, Mr. Henry Lunde, the club members enjoyed another eventful year.

YEARBOOK

A year ago, Colonial "80" existed only in the minds of the advisors and about 20 students who became the colonial staff. Today, the Colonial "80" is s reality, not only to the staff, but to all of Hempstead.

Our goal in planning this book was to present to everyone, and especially the seniors, s Panorama of HHS which will recall to all the pleasant memories of their high school years.

This book came to be what it is today through months of contemplation and bard work. The ideas in the minds of the staff were converted into words, photography, and art work. Hours of bard work went into the designing of layouts, conducting interviews, the writing of copy, fund raising and the general preparation of the book.

Finally, you have the finished product which you now bold in your bands. A miracle at HHS bas occurred. We crested s book!

Our Editorial staff, Layout Crew, Business staff, and Student Photographers should be given their welldeserved credit. (A Gold Medal)

We look forward to bearing more from them in the coming year.

CO-ED CLUB

A very popular and successful aclub of HHS was formed this y ear . . . the Co-ed CLUB.

The CO-ED CLUB, consisting of both male and female students is a wonderful home-economics organization which bas, during its first year in existence, greatly enhanced the minds and souls of Hempstead residents as well as the students of HHS.

Members of this significant group have shown their expertise is sewing, modeling, tailoring, fashion designing, macrame, string art. Other activities - this year included a Christmas boutique, a fashiontalent show and clinic for physical fitness and dieting.

NEWSPAPER

The Newspaper is an influential p11rt of society . Its role and primary function is to inform and make explicit to its audience the events of the surrounding area.

It is these functions that 11The Tiger's Roar" tries to fulfill in its four editions during a school year. A close coverage of the academic department, athletic teams, various organizations, community affairs, and special events are major areas of the Newspaper. Its prime interest is focused upon its audience and it tries to give a variety of news to capture, entertain and inform its readers.

CHEERLEADERS Rouse Crowd Spirit

Support of our Football and Basketball teams by the cheerleaders added a major boost to school spirit.

On the Varsity level, the squad, coached by Ms. L. Killings and captains, Wanda Bostick, Alicia Hawkins, and Ronda Brown, raised their voices at every game. They bad a wide repertoire: Many of their cheers contained intricate mounts and gymnastic moves.

Following the Varsity lead, the JV cheerleaders, captained by Rhonda Colbert, and under the direction of Ms. Crosson, their advisor, gave their support and appeared at all the games.

To compliment our excellent football and basketball teams, The HHS Pep Club, following the lead of our cheerleaders, entertained our spectators and helped to enhance crowd spirit.

The Pep Club, one of the schools largest clubs consisting of approximately 70 members, appeared at every home and away game.

The club under the direction of its advisor, Ms. Barnett, closed its season with a big party.

VARSITY FOOTBALL
