!£"i~k~,"··.>1968 Aloha it is hoped that YOll. wil see a ew , ' ,side of Western Maryland College -

From new dorms to Understa produc 'OTIS,

we are progressing. But it is thr ndividual who jmust give the rough ideas concre\e form. F r this ~reason, the staff has placed speci~-c emphasis onPeople throughout the book.

We have experimented with new otogra~" ictechniques in an effort to give maxim mean" gto the subject, and our copy was design - _".pecially for the pictures, supporting and en-hancing them. '_,

This year, the divider pages were used totiethe various themes of creativity together. Asidefrom being functioning parts of the book, they arein themselves works of art.

But now, our creativity is yours. The measureof our success lies before you.

Creativity is .Straining to grasp the sun

A trip inside the dark holes of the mindTo find ... ourselves?

Searching for the new, the different,The freedom and despair of solitude

Of being alone in a world of followers-It is a trial, an error, and maybe a success.

At any rate, it is a beginning.

Art flourishes where there is a sense of adventure,a sense of nothing having been done before,a complete freedom to experiment.

Allred North Whitehead

CONTINUITY

AND CHANGE

The direct relation 0/ music is not to ideas, butto emotions.

H.Giles

· .. I have stood still and stopped the sound of feetWhen far away an interrupted cryCame over houses from another street,But not to call me back or say good-bye;And further still at an unearthly height,One luminary clock against the skyProclaimed the time was neither wrong nor right.I have been one acquainted with the night.

Robert Frost

Action. is eloquence.Shakespeare

AndTheTimes ...

TheyAreA-Changing

It is easy in the world to live after the world's opinion;it is easy in solitude to live after your own; but thegreat man is he who in the midst of the crowd keepswith perfect sweetness the independence of solitude.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

Voltaire

You must have the devil in vou to succeed in any ofthe arts.

· .. hut when all is done, the people remain.Lee Foster

There is rarely a creative man who does not have topay a high price for the divine spark 0/ his greatgifts ... the human element is frequently bled for thebenefit of the creative element and to such an extentthat it even brings out the bad qualities ... and allthis in order to bring to the human f at least somelife-strength, since otherwise it would perish of sheerinanition.

Carl Jung

PresidentDr. Ensor ... trying,

trying somehow to heed the cries of stud.~nts

and faculty to bring WMC into the twentieth

century.

Trying at the same lime to placate the wails of

tradition-bound authorities,

trying to initiate at least a semblance of

communication on campus.

Trying somehow to find those elusive millions that

just keep eluding the grasp,

trying to give Western Maryland a better repu-

lation.

Admittedly, fear gives them coherence, but ortce they've mastered "the system."then what?Is this the class that will be "Western Maryland'71" and not eight sovereign states? They try, they care.Upperclassmen shake their heads,"It won't last."But they still refuse to accept the inevitable. They aren't just coasting yet; they still push.

"Whatever it is, it's hall celerv"

Ttus is a Revlon happening.

"Go 10 bcd, yolt know he won't come 'til you'reoslcep"

"T know a place where dreams are born, and timeis never planned. "

Sometimes it seems like we'll never grow up. Wekeep clapping our hands and believing in thosedreams, and tomorrow is something that just isn't.We've been here forever already. The "Hill" is onehundred years old, so they say; but that's clock time. You know-minutes, hours, days, weeks, years. Andthe only certainty we have discovered is immutability.Classes, Grille, Open Parties, tests, Christmas, exams, semester break, and around again. Never·Never Landnever changes, and the world spins madly on what-ever course it will.

There is only one thing to be afraid of up here andmost of us don', hear it 'til second semester Senioryear. But it's there just the same, and maybe, nowthat we've reached the half-way mark, we should sitquietly for a moment and listen. The longer youlisten the louder it gets. It's the sound of the big"T," and that doesn't stand for "Terror"- or maybeit does. Time doesn't stand and wait for us to lookat it, and no matter how you add it up, we've onlygot two years left. No matter how hard we clap ourhands, it's going to shimmer and disappear. Andmaybe all we'll have left in the end is a scrapbookfilled with old newspaper clippings.

After reading yearbook write-ups, newspaper ar-ticles, and hearing class speeches, the junior class isthoroughly acquainted with the typical class epitaphs. After hearing long panegyrics and listening to ex-cuses made for unaccomplished pledges, the class of1969 is all too familiar with the reasons "why not."

The junior class of Western Maryland Collegerealizes that they are walking along the same triteroad of excuses and remembrances of things past.Perhaps though, there is still time to fulfill a fewunanswered pledges. Perhaps the class of 1969 mightnot be completely factioned by fraternities and sorori-ties and perhaps the year 1969 may prove to beproductive and fertile.

Perhaps we can actually promote a cultural eventlike a night at the theatre or something other than ahayride or a picture-taking booth at May Day. Everhear this before?

Maybe.Think some class can actually accomplish their

aims?Maybe.There's always 1969.

PresentsGOES WEST

Saturday March II

Standing behind the scenes, the cast looks almostludicrous ... they somehow give the impression of amotley crew of rag-tag kids playing out on the cornerlot instead of characters out of the Wild Wild West... Larry, with his passion-purple fez and John withhis beard, sitting in the rear of the auditorium, look-ing like a skinny Farouk and Fidel, laughing hys-terically at the actors stumbling over their reactionsto each other as characters

Dance hall girls, looking like somebody's little sisteron Prom Night-a far cry from wicked women of theworld ... a pitifully stupid looking cowboy who mut-ters under his breath that his rented red long johnsare too tight ... a "hired gun from Hoboken" whosegarment district accent seems ridiculously out ofplace. . bloodthirsty Indians craving a piece ofFrench-fried liver ... and a smiling nude hangingover the bar reigning over it all .

Laughter suddenly silenced when the audience filtersin. . half of the cast coughing, knowing they shouldbe in the infirmary because the damned flu epidemichad to come this week .. hoping their voices won'tcrack too much on-stage .

. A sudden panic when the curtain goes up .parched throats ... a squelched gulp. and "Mary-belle Goes West" is on. . this time, for real.this time, the cast delivering as it never has before.

o DK and the Trumpeters sponsored a new exper-iment in Campus Communication on Saturday, March9. The format consisted of panels of students, faculty, and administration which discussed issues of interestto the College. Members of the audience participatedfreely in the discussions focusing on three topics-Changing Student Attitudes, Student Government andLaw, and Wine, Women, and Whimsee.

The most controversial of the seminars was centeredon the housing policy in the new dormitories. The girlsin the audience unanimously opposed policy of hous-ing only independents and freshmen in the new dorm, while the administration listened with an open mind.If nothing else, the day was well spent in opening

new channels of communication between students, fa-culty, and administration.

A crucial topic at any time, but more so inthe 1960's.

Unemployment, racial unrest, crime, hunger, insufficient housing, disease, and (fill in the blank-full

Admittedly ancien I problems, but seeds sown cen-turies ago are only now beginning to produce theirfruit.

the gleaners are busy now, gatheringa grotesque harvest of hate.

Tentative solutions offered by McKeldin, but muchof his talk a plea, an order, perhaps a challenge

to us,to an emerging generationto face the uncomfortable fact that

we must restore at least a semblanceof order to the chaos.

The TrialI once walked for an afternoon, and wondered why thedays of my life were all so much alike. But soon, the work was all I needed and my mind stopped itsfoolish wandering.

then one evening, I called anyone for a date.and she accepted, but it soon faded into other any-ones. and I never really thought much about it.

a few weeks ago, I watched four policemen carrythis Negro into the police station. He was bleed-ing and almost unconscious. But he had a very tor-hued look on his face. and it did take a littlewhile before I forgot that.

then one morning, i awoke and everything was differ-ent. faces were new and cold, and no one gave meany straight answers. i thought perhaps, hopefully, maybe ... it was a dream just a dream and soon it wouldbe over. But more cold images passed in front ofmy life. Not quite touching yet, but so close thatmy mind slowly began to recall all.

the unanswered afternoon walk, questions, all thepatterns that hide my insecurity, all the anyones-anyones who care for the brief battle that is sooften the way we communicate with one another.

and i prayed, "Jesus Christ," did I pray. andsuddenly it dawned on me that my entire life hadbeen spent in prayers for things. Iwondered ifperhaps there was another way.

and i tried to just forget it all and do my work.and then i stopped to look at what Iwas doing. Andthen the phone rang, and iwas yelled at, and peoplepushed me and shoved me, and everything startedspinning around. faster, faster.

so you understand why I'm here. here, in this roomof reflecting black walls. Simple, cold furniture, the sounds of life that once slipt easily through mybeing-sounds that are now twisted and turned.

give me that knife! give it to me. I need theknife, you'll hold it won't you? Please! Please!Plea ..

In The Beginning-

"The fall of '91 witnessed the introduction of thispopular game into our midst. Hitherto the spirit ofyouthful innocence had characterized our field sports, and the mad, tempestous rush of Foot Ball was toour untutored simplicity but a creature of the imagi-nation. But, with the opening of the fall term, a newera in athletics seemed to dawn upon Western Mary-land. Conviction was but the parent of action, andsoon the inflated oblate spheroid was to be seenbounding over her ample grounds. Here a howlingmob in frantic eagerness chased a luckless bit ofleather from goal to goal.

True, indeed, many physiognomies suffered fromviolent collisions, and the grand march to chapel ex-ercises revealed a variety of limps and hops well-nigh distracting to our pianist and defying the mostcomplicate? time relations produced by the ablestcomposers
