32 2004 Review

The Marquette volleyball team made tremendousstrides in 2004. The 2004 senior class — Sarah Vernon,Erica Heisser and Erin Freer — proved to be the role mod-els for hard work, intensity and determination that led thesquad to one of the best records in school history.

The 2004 Marquette volleyball squad went 22-7,recording more wins than any other team since 1985 andrecording more wins as an NCAA Division I team than anyother in Marquette history. The 75.8 winning percentagewas better than any other team in Marquette history, withthe lone exclusion of the 1985 team. Marquette finishedin a tie for second in the Conference USA standings, itsbest conference finish ever, and advanced to the C-USAtitle match for the first time in school history.

"I am so proud of the work this team and our programhas made over the last three seasons," head coach PatiRolf said. "It comes down to hard work and leadership. The seniors and teams we have had these past three yearshave lead Marquette into a position of dominance in theconference and we are excited about the future."

Individually, standards were set that highlighted theseason. Senior Libero Erin Freer became Marquette's careerrecord holder for digs, smashing the previous total. Her1,450 career digs beat the old record, held by Keelyn Krill,by 216. She had 411 digs, the fifth best single seasontotal in school history and was a consistent and soliddefender during 2004 and her career.

"Erin Freer set the standard for defense," Rolf said."She is one of the most beautiful defenders I have everwitnessed in this program and beyond. We will miss hertalent, work ethic and personality."

Senior setter Sarah Vernon became Marquette's sixthall-time career assists performer with 1,854. Her 1,215assists in 2004 was good for sixth on the Marquette sin-gle season ledger. Vernon was also instrumental in theoffensive efforts, leading the team with a 31.2 attack per-

centage, the fourth best single season attack percentagein school history. Vernon's offensive efforts earned her aspot as second team All-Conference USA. Vernon's 24.4career attack percentage is fifth on the Marquette all-timelist.

"Sarah went beyond anything that was out there forsetters in terms of attacking and setting. She racked upnumbers never before recorded by a first year starter." Rolfadded. "I just wish we had the opportunity to have herwith us one more year. Her potential is unbelievable, herleadership and steady personality added to the power ofthe senior class."

Senior Erica Heisser led the team in blocks with a 1.15per game average. She was accurate as well, hitting 28.3percent on the season, the seventh best single seasontotal in Marquette history. Heisser hit 24.0 percent for hercareer and places just behind Vernon all-time at Marquettein sixth place.

"Erica is an individual I am so proud of, she has hadto play middle due to some early losses of players over theyears and she took the position and made it into some-thing to be very proud of," Rolf said. "From my first yearwith her to now she has become a dominant offensiveforce on this team and by years end was coming into herown. Her performance in the conference tournament wasfantastic."

Junior outside hitter Theresa Coughlin continued herimpressive play from her sophomore season. A preseasonall-Conference USA selection, Coughlin led the team with396 kills, the eighth best single season total at Marquette. She earned second team All-Conference USA as a result. With her solid success over three seasons, Coughlin fin-ished her junior season in second in career kills atMarquette, just seven away from the top spot, held byChris Curtin with 1,280.

Freshman Kimberley Todd was a big reason Marquettewas successful in 2004. The outside hitter from Osahwa,Ont., was third on the team in kills with 293 and earneda spot on the Conference USA All-Freshman team.

Redshirt freshman Jenn Brown showed her dominationat the net. She was second on the team with 98 blocksand set a single-match Marquette record with 12 assistedblocks against Houston.

Sophomore Jamie Mueller became a valuable outsidehitter after making the transition from defensive special-ist early in the season. Mueller was a consistent attackerand a solid defender, chalking up 168 kills and 284 digson the year.

Junior Caitie O'Brien was solid as a defensive special-ist amassing 240 digs and 19 aces on the season.

"We are impressed with the work the younger playersdid during the 2004 season and the winning tradition andpride that is being established by past seniors," Rolfadded. "Now we have to move to the next level and estab-lish it faster and sooner. With the experience we havegained this year and the schedule we have for next year itis within our reach. I like what I am seeing out of this '05class and team, now it is time to work in the off seasonand develop some intensity and maturity for this next sea-son."

The rest of the Marquette rotation learned from thevaluable experience of being successful. Four times,Marquette owned three-match or longer win streaks andwon 13-of-14 matches heading into the Conference USATournament Championship match. Six times, Marquettestudent-athletes were named Player-of-the-Week byConference USA. Vernon led the charge with four selec-tions during the season.

Marquette set the tone for 2004 in the non-conferenceseason. Racing out to a 10-3 out-of-league mark, theGolden Eagles were primed for a run in its C-USA sched-ule. After a pair of setbacks started the C-USA slate,Marquette rattled off 10-of-11 in C-USA play to finish 10-3 on the year and tie for second, the highest finish inschool history. That set the stage for the run to theleague's title match.

"We had a tremendous run in the conference aftergaining valuable experience the first weekend of play ver-sus Louisville and Cincinnati, after that the playersstepped it up and fought back and that is what made thedifference," Rolf continued. "We have tremendous fightershere, yes it is about hard work and discipline, but thesewomen need to learn how to fight for the things that theywant and that are important to them and this group islearning how to do that."

Fan support for Marquette volleyball increased as well.Marquette set its top two attendance marks during theseason. For the home contest against Louisville, 733 fanspacked "The Al" and 824 showed up for the regular sea-son finale against Southern Miss.

"Something I am very proud of is the support we aregetting at our games, from faculty, staff and students. Wealso have tremendous support from our youth, our kids'clinics brought in over 400 children ages 4-13 and issomething we will continue to expand," Rolf said. "Weappreciate the support from our donors and communitymembers who recognize the hard work and dedication ittakes to be a Marquette Volleyball Student Athlete. We willcontinue to expand our fan and donor base by showingthem some of the finest female student athletes in thecountry."

In all, the 2004 season proved to be one of successand accolades that fans of Marquette volleyball will soonnot forget.

Freer fin-ished the 2004 season as Marquette's digs leader with 411 (4.11per game). That was the seventh best total in Conference USA. Primarily a defender, Freer finished first on theteam with 362 digs and her mark of 3.42 digs per game tied foreighth place among Conference USA players. 2004 Seniors/Review

2004 (Senior)Sarah Vernon proved to be a dominating offensive threat and

a distributor in her senior season. She earned Conference USASecond-Team honors and was named C-USA Setter-of-the-Weekfour times as a senior.

Vernon finished her career with 1,854 assists, the sixth bestcareer total in Marquette history. Her final season numbers of1,215 put her sixth in Marquette single season history. Combiningher accuracy of setting with accuracy of attacking, she helpedMarquette to a C-USA best 15.21 assists per game total (24th inthe NCAAs) and a 16.62 kills per game mark, second best inConference USA (21st in the NCAAs).

But it was also her attacking that made her a multi-facetedthreat. She had a 1.14 kills per game average and led the teamwith a 31.2 attack percentage, the 10th best total in ConferenceUSA. That number is also the fourth-best single-season total inMarquette history.

She proved her versatility by recording her second career tripledouble in a five-game win over Saint Louis (Oct. 30). In thatmatch, she set a career best with 70 assists. She also had 12 killsand 16 digs. She recorded five-other kill/assist double-doubles andhad six dig/assist double-doubles to give her 12 double-doubleson the season.

Five times during the season, Vernon had an attack percentageof over 50.0 percent to go along with double figures in assists. Shehad her most accurate match against UAB (Oct. 16), where shelanded six of eight kills for a 75.0 percent attacking average to goalong with 37 assists.

2003 (Junior)A versatile performer, Vernon was listed specifically at setter as

a junior but had an impact far greater than that of a distributor.Serving as the back-up setter to one of Marquette's most prolificsetters, Gemma Greer, Vernon found playing time in multiple ways. She had her moments as Marquette's no. 1 setter, filling in forGreer when she was injured, but she saw plenty of action as a floordefender and a front-line attacker.

While her role at setter was limited, it was not without success. She had five matches with double figures in assists, three of whichwere 56 assists or better. She set a career high with 59 assists ina five-game match against Wis.-Milwaukee (Sept. 24). Perhaps herbest match of the year, Vernon had a rare triple-double, blasting11 kills and coming up with 12 digs. She also assisted on threeblocks in that contest..

Vernon's other two 50+ assist totals came in back-to-backmatches. She had 57 dishes against Houston (Oct. 31) and fol-lowed that up with 56 assists against TCU (Nov. 1). While her sea-son total of 2.45 assists per game was diluted due to playing mostof the rest of her time at other positions, she had a gaudy 11.30assists per game over that two-match span.

She saw time as an attacker as well, recording a 15.4 hittingpercentage on the year. Her best match as an attacker cameagainst Wis.-Milwaukee. She also had 19 attacks against Houstonand TCU due to her role as full time setter in those contests.

2002 (Sophomore)Vernon saw action in 27 matches and in a total of 78 games en

route to her second letter. She was second on the club with 188assists (2.19 apg). She recorded a season-best 24 assists andchipped in four attacks, four digs and four block assists againstIPFW (Sept. 21). Vernon finished with a career-high 15 digsagainst UAB (Nov. 8). That was one of seven matches with dou-ble-figure digs. She helped Marquette with six attacks, 12 digs andfour blocks against Tulane (Nov. 22) in the C-USA Tournament. Sheestablished a career best with 10 attacks against Houston (Nov.2). Vernon finished with 14 digs, six attacks and four blocks atSaint Louis (Oct. 25). She was a member of the C-USACommissioner's Honor Roll recognizing a GPA of 3.00 or better.

2001 (Freshman)Vernon earned a letter in her freshman year after playing in 28

games over the course of 15 matches. She had a fine all-aroundmatch in the season finale against Tennessee (Nov. 23) with 29assists, five attacks, seven digs and three blocks. She recordedseason-bests with 45 assists and nine digs against Charlotte (Nov.2).. Academically, she was a member of the C-USA Commissioner'sHonor Roll.

Prior to MarquetteVernon had an outstanding prep and club career that saw her

claim many individual honors. She earned four letters at CherryCreek High School and served as the team captain her junior andsenior seasons. She helped her team to a record of 26-5 and a no.2 ranking in the state her final year and was an all-state selectionin 2000, earning honorable mention recognition her junior year.Vernon was named team MVP in 1999 and 2000 and was a mem-

ber of the state championship teams in1997 and 1998.

PersonalBorn Jan. 28, 1983, Vernon is the

Sept. 11 • Kalamazoo, Mich. • (3-2)

KALAMAZOO, Mich. — Senior outside hitter Erica Heisser had a colle-giate high 20 kills, but Rutgers’ balanced effort was enough for a 3-1(16-30, 30-26, 30-24, 34-32) win. Rutgers had four players with 10 ormore kills.

Early on, it appeared that Marquette (3-2) would dominate thematch. The Golden Eagles cruised to a 14-point win in game one.Marquette hit 37.5 percent in the first game and outkilled Rutgers (2-3),16-9. Marquette’s 8-1 run in the middle of the first game gave the GoldenEagles all the momentum it would need for the win. A 5-0 run late in thegame paced by a pair of kills from Heisser proved more than enough forthe game one triumph.

Marquette still held the statistical advantage in game two, owningthe kill battle, 29-24, but Rutgers won the game, 30-26. Heisser had 10of her 20 kills in the game, but a late run by Rutgers was too much forMarquette to handle. After jumping to a 12-9 lead in the game on threestraight service aces by senior Libero Erin Freer, Rutgers responded witha 9-3 run to take the lead it would hold through the end of the secondgame.

Rutgers’ Stephanie Travoli matched Heisser’s total with 10 kills ingame three to pace the Scarlet Knights to the six-point win. Marquettestruggled offensively, having 14 kills with 11 errors in the frame. Rutgershit 31.4 percent for the game, taking its first lead at 6-5 and never relin-quishing it.

Marquette battled in the final game, but came up short, 34-32. Noteam owned larger than a three-point lead as neither team wanted togive up in the final game. Tied at 22, neither team scored more than twoconsecutive points, but Rutgers timed their mini-runs to earn the narrowvictory in the final game.

Junior outside hitter Theresa Coughlin also came up with a seasonhigh 15 kills. Senior setter Sarah Vernon logged a season best 48 assists.Leading the way for Rutgers was Laura Yankauskas, who had 15 kills.Travoli finished with 13.

Marquette 24 22 2420) Louisville 30 30 30

Nov. 23 • Louisville, Ky. • (22-7)

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Marquette was competitive in itsfirst Conference USA title match, but couldn’t upset20th-ranked Louisville as the Golden Eagles lost tothe tournament’s top seed, 3-0 (30-24, 30-22, 30-24).

With a strong final game, junior outside hitterTheresa Coughlin recorded 14 kills to lead Marquette.Freshman outside hitter Kimberley Todd had 12 killsand sophomore outside hitter Jamie Mueller landed11. Louisville was led by Lena Ustymenko with 15 killsand hit 39.4 percent. Jennifer Hoffman finished with11 kills and seven blocks to pace Louisville on thedefensive side.

“It was a heck of a game,” head coach Pati Rolfsaid. “Louisville’s a powerful team and we played ourhearts out. Against Louisville, you have to come withall six players and we were a little short tonight. ButI’m proud of what we’ve done and these seniors haveplayed incredible all year.”

After Louisville built a 10-point lead in game one,Marquette (22-7) rallied to cut the lead to five.Marquette didn’t score consecutive points until the19-12 mark. However, the Golden Eagles’ 5-1 rallybrought the game close at 24-19 with a kill by Muller, who led the team with four kills in the first game. However, the Cardinals were able to close out thegame on one of two kills by Yartseva in the game.Ustemenko was the balance of offense for Louisville(27-2) with five kills. Todd and Vernon also added fourkills in the game for Marquette.

While the beginning of the first game wasn’t close,Marquette kept game two tight. The Golden Eaglesdidn’t trail by more than two points until 14-11 whenUstymenko killed a lengthy rally. Mueller and seniormiddle blocker Erica Heisser quickly responded to sti-fle any momentum Louisville had with kills combinedwith an error by Louisville brought the score levelagain at 14.

The game remained close throughout with 10 ties. However, a 5-0 run by Louisville gave the Cardinals a24-19 advantage and they would use that to close outthe game. Ustymenko was key to the rally forLouisville with six kills in the second game. One ofthree blocks by Hoffman in the game closed out theframe, 30-22, Mueller and Vernon again had four killsfor Marquette.

“You can’t make mistakes against Louisville,” Rolfsaid. “We kept it tight, which is what we hoped to do.We played disciplined, but they took advantage of anymistakes.”

Coughlin started the third game strong, recordinga pair of kills to lead Marquette to a four-point lead, its largest in the match. She came alive in the thirdgame, recording a team-high seven kills. Louisvillewent on a 4-0 run to earn the first of 10 ties in thegame at 10-10. An Ustymenko ace gave Louisville itsfirst lead at 12-11, but the game continued to remainclose.

Back-to-back kills by Heisser gave Marquette a 17-15 lead, but Louisville wouldn't let Marquette’s leadlast, tying the two points later. A block by Stephanie

Marsh and a block by Bing Sun and Hoffman com-bined with a kill from Marsh gave Louisville a four-point lead at 23-19, and from there, it would closeout the match. Marsh had three of her four blocks inthe final game.

Louisville’s accuracy was key to the win. TheCardinals hit 37.2 percent in the second game and48.6 percent in the final game, on the way to hitting38.2 percent for the match. Marquette stayed com-petitive in the second game with 16 kills and a matchhigh 22.5 attack percentage.

Louisville out-killed Marquette 58 to 53 as theGolden Eagles kept that number close thanks to 22kills in the third game. Marquette struggled with thepowerful Louisville offense, as it didn’t record a blockthrough two games and only had one for the match.

“We struggled with the block tonight,” Rolf added.“Louisville’s the type of team that can hit over thetop of the block. But this tournament was a step for-ward for us. We have a lot of young players and it wasa good learning experience for them to be in this sit-uation.”

Coughlin and Vernon were named to the all-tour-nament team, along with Hoffman and Ustymenko ofLouisville. Memphis’ Heather Watts and Cincinnati’sJulie DuPont were also named all-tournament.Ustymenko was named tournament MVP.

“It was great that the two were named all-tourna-ment,” Rolf said. “What Coughlin and the three sen-iors — Saran Vernon, Erin Freer and Erica Heisser —have accomplished with this team has made me veryproud.”

With the win, Louisville extends its match winstreak to 19 and its game win streak to 54. TheCardinals also claim the automatic bid fromConference USA, while Marquette will await a possibleat-large selection to the NCAA Tournament, which willbe named on Sunday, Nov. 28.

“I’m proud of getting to the final,” Rolf said. “Wedid some good things this year and played a goodschedule. But we have to remember that there aresome good teams out there that played good volley-ball.”
