I am pleased to welcome you to the CCS 16th Annual Gala Auction! We look forward with eager anticipation to this event as one of the highlights of each school year! To make this evening happen, many members of our community work together for a common cause – to create an event that is beautiful, fun, and productive for our school. For all who attend the Auction, it is a time to celebrate who we are, while financially supporting our mission to graduate students academically and spiritually prepared to lives of faith in service to others. Each year we are amazed at the generosity of our community in helping us reach our goals. Proceeds from our auctions have helped us to enhance our educational programs, support our teachers’ instructional needs, and provide tuition assistance so that all families who value Catholic education have the opportunity to do so. The fruit of our effort is clear as we hear repeatedly from parents, high school teachers and administrators about the preparedness, success, and strong faith values of our graduates.

Those of you who have attended the Auction can look forward to fun familiar features that will be back – Bubbles for Baubles, Heads or Tails, appealing raffle items, and the highly coveted class gifts! There will be exciting new features as well. This year we are introducing mobile bidding! This feature will allow you to follow your bids on your smart phone or at stations manned by “table angels.” In addition, we will have an “artist in residence” who will create a piece during the Auction and have it ready for you to take at the end of the evening!

I extend my heartfelt thanks to many, many people who make this evening possible. I am especially grateful to Keri-Ann Byrne who is chairing the Auction for the fourth consecutive year, and to our sponsors who so generously support us. Countless volunteers, including parents, grandparents, teachers, and students for many months and through this evening have contributed parts that come together into a beautiful creation. Finally, I am thankful to you, our guests for joining with us in this important endeavor for Charlottesville Catholic School. All glory to God for His work through you.

So bid often, bid high, enjoy time with friends, and celebrate our greatest blessing- the children!

Yours in Christ,

Sue DoughertyInterim Principal

16TH ANNUAL GALA AUCTION 9

A Note from the Auction Chair

As I sat to reflect on this year’s 16th Annual Gala Auction, I began to realize that this has been a year of change for our auction. Our changes began last summer when some of our long-time auction volunteers relocated and moved on from CCS. Change is never easy as I lamented the loss of my experienced and valued volunteers who along the way became friends. However, as usually results, others find their way to step forward and work to fill the shoes of those before them. I have been so blessed to have so many new families who have come forward to help in a variety of ways, even while never having attended the Gala Auction. With these new families, not only came new volunteers and friends, but also new donors, advertisers and sponsors. Please take note of our generous new contributors as well as our previous, loyal supporters who have traveled this adventure with us for many years. Our entire CCS community thanks them for their generosity that has made our 16th Annual Gala Auction possible.

The other great change taking place this year is the elimination of our trusty bid sheets to be replaced by the new initiative sweeping silent auctions this year, Mobile Bidding. As technology continues to advance and improve, CCS finds it important to stay at the forefront of these changes. After much research and encouragement from schools that have already tested Mobile Bidding, CCS is ready to take this big leap forward with the close guidance and support of Greater Giving and Bidding For Good. Greater Giving has supported us with their auction software and fabulous customer support for many years and has partnered with Bidding For Good to make a smooth transition into the Mobile Bidding craze. Staff from both companies will be onsite with us auction night to ensure us a successful night with smooth sailing on this new adventure. Please help us welcome them to Charlottesville, Virginia and our celebration of Charlottesville Catholic School!

As I close in my thoughts about our 16th Annual Gala Auction, I am again amazed at how far we have come in 16 years and the breath of our CCS family and supporters. I am so grateful for all that our previous volunteers have contributed to CCS and our Galas, and for their help in bringing us to where we are today. I am so excited, thankful and encouraged by the many new friends who have come forward to get involved in the auction this year and join me in presenting this night to you. We so greatly value each and every one of our school families, friends and parish supporters and welcome you to celebrate Charlottesville Catholic School’s 16th Annual Gala Auction with us! Thank you for your continued support and generosity! Enjoy your night!

Blessings,

Keri-Ann Byrne2012 Auction Chair

16TH ANNUAL GALA AUCTION 11

About the AuctionOnline Registration Visit http://www.cvillecatholic.org/auction2012 to register to attend the auction and make your meal selection. When registering, if you plan to sit with specific guests (tables of 10), please enter the table name (listed as “Group Name” online) that you and your guests have decided upon. If no Group Name is entered, you will be assigned to a table. While on the website you will also have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets, browse the online catalog, or donate to the Teachers’ Wish List.

We welcome back our favorite auctioneer, Mr. Pat Powell of Harlowe-Powell Auction Gallery. Mr. Powell continues to donate his time to help us raise valuable funds for our school and our students. The next time you are in need of an auctioneer, please help CCS return the favor and call Harlowe-Powell.

Mobile Bidding—NEW THIS YEAR! Have you lost out on items in the past because you just didn’t make it back to the bid sheet? Have had to cut a conversation short because you wanted to get back to the auction table before it closed? No more! Bring your Smart phone or cell phone with text capabilities and bid from the palm of your hand, wherever you are. That’s right; no more bid sheets. After registering to attend the auction online, you will receive an email explaining how to register your phone for auction bidding. You can either register your phone after checking in on auction night with the help of our mobile bidding volunteers, or register your phone with the emailed instructions prior to arriving on auction night. Either way, we will have a team of mobile bidding volunteers to help and instruct you all night long. For those who do not have or want to use their phone, we will also have netbook computers stationed throughout the silent auction with a volunteer to help you place your bids. We’re thrilled to move forward this new and innovative advancement in silent auction bidding and are excited to share this experience with you. Thank you in advance for your patience as we work together through our first year of Mobile Bidding!

The Super Silent Board Returns. This is your place to find some of the best items available that we couldn’t quite fit in the Live Auction. To bid on an item listed on the board, complete a bidder card from the board with your name, the item you are bidding on and your bid amount. When you hand your bidder card to the Silent Board volunteer, he/she will write your bidder number on the back of your card. If you have the highest bid for that item, your card, with only your bidder number showing, will be hung next to that item. If your card doesn’t make it to the front of the board, then you’ve been out-bid. Out bid by how much, you ask? Nobody knows! Bid as many times as you like for whatever amount you choose. But, watch out- the board closes at 8:00pm. If you don’t see our bidder number on the front of the board at the time of closing, you’ve been out-bid!

Bubbles for Baubles Back by popular demand! After checking in, begin your night with a glass of sparkling white wine by Barboursville Vineyards. This $10 purchase enters you for a chance to win the bauble on the table. This year’s bauble is a stunning long single or double strand sterling silver necklace with freshwater pearls, compliments of Andrew Minton Jewelers. Every lady will want a chance at winning this (for only $10!), so be sure to buy a glass for each of you and return for more throughout the night to increase her chance to win!

Heads or Tails? For only $10 you can participate in the Heads or Tails game for a chance at winning a week at Massanutten over spring break! Imagine a whole week in a 2 bedroom condo at Massanutten for only $10! Your week is scheduled from April 8-14 and sleeps eight. Close to home for quick travel time, easy commuting to work if needed, you’ll be able to enjoy the largest indoor water park on the East Coast, ice skating, golf, horseback riding, or fishing. Try the spas or Diamond Jim’s Arcade. Tanning, Yoga, Tai Chi, children’s arts and crafts, “Super Sleuth” fun, shopping, movie night, bingo, Trivia Night; Massanutten has it all. Purchase your participation from a wandering Heads or Tails seller during the Silent Auction or sign up at your seat before the game begins. The game will take place in between the Live Auctions. When the auctioneer begins, you’ll place your hands on either your head or your tail. The flip of his coin will determine who advances to the next round. Massanutten, here we come!

Balloons will be available for $25 each. Balloon sellers will be wandering the Silent Auction floor, with one person stationed at the entrance to the ballroom. Each balloon contains the number of an item valued at a minimum of $25, but many balloons contain the surprise of a higher valued item. Most balloons contain gift certificates to local restaurants while some contain other surprises that are sure to please. Remember to pick up your balloon item at check-out and don’t let a balloon get away from you this year.

The CCS Exclusives Section is the place to find our school donated items, other than the Live Auction Class Gifts. Outings with teachers, reserved seating for events, class donated themed baskets and lessons or services offered by our faculty and staff. A few can be found in areas with other items that are of similar type or on the Super Silent Board, but mostly, it’s all right here for you.

Our bidder paddles are used each year. Please remember to turn in your paddle at the exit at the end of the night.

The Auction Chair or Auctioneer reserves the right to reopen the bidding or to take the bidding live on any item that attracts unusual attention.

Teacher Wish ListEach year our auctioneer makes a direct ask of our guests to donate to our Teachers’ Wish List. This Wish List is a compilation of a variety of items that our teachers feel would directly benefit instruction and the children’s learning experience that would otherwise remain unfunded. A committee of teachers meet after the auction each year to determine how best to spend their new Wish List funds. Examples of what our Teachers’ Wish List funds have purchased in the past are, SMART boards, ELMO digital projection devices, library books and software, math and science manipulatives, instruments, an art display case and art supplies.

Class Gift VolunteersEach year a very special group of parents gather together with our children to create a unique gift that represents each class. This is certainly not an easy task! These parents must come up with an idea and carry it through from initial planning to the final completion of the gift. Many hours are spent as they take their ideas and create a priceless treasure that captures the spirit of each class. Shannon Reuter and Kim Emmert led the group of dedicated volunteers this year. We would like to recognize and extend our heartfelt thanks to this special group of people.
