John Vandemoer

Head CoachSecond SeasonHobart College, ’00

John Vandemoer enters his second year at Stanford as Head Coach. This year Vandemoer looks to build off last year’s success of winning four of the six district championships and qualifying for all three spring Nationals, the only PCCSC team to do so.

Vandemoer is praised for his commitment, patience, and attention to detail when it comes to supporting his team. However, one characteristic is the most essential: his excitement in getting out on the water and interacting with the sailors.

“I believe in coaching athletes first and sailors second,” Vandemoer said. “I like to not only coach boat handling, speed and tactics, but really like preparing sailors mentally as well. My strengths are team race coaching and regatta coaching.”

Before coming to Stanford, Vandemoer was head coach at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. He led the Midshipman to three national championship appearances in spring ’07, and ended the season with both the women’s and coed teams ranked in the top-10 in the country.

He began collegiate coaching at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, where as an assistant coach he worked with All-American sailors and helped form teams in contention for national titles.

Vandemoer’s training is top-notch, as he not only has a U.S. Sailing Level 3 Coach Certification, the highest advanced coaching level offered by the national organization, but is also a certified instructor trainer. For several years, Vandemoer has traveled the nation coaching junior sailing clinics at the highest level. For his efforts, he has received the Capt. Joe Prosser Award for excellence in sail training. Vandemoer was also awarded the Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medal for his efforts in rescuing many dinghy sailors that were caught in the vicious winds of a Chicago cold front.

Vandemoer graduated from Hobart College in 2000 with a B.S. in geo-chemistry. As a member of the Hobart and William Smith varsity sailing team, he helped the team to consistent top-three rankings including a fourth at team racing nationals and a second at the dinghy nationals.

FrankUstach

Assistant CoachFirst SeasonBoston College, ’06

Entering his first season as a collegiate level coach is assistant coach, Frank Ustach. Ustach, a 2005 Boston College graduate, brings a year of leadership as team captain (2004-2005) as well as a wealth of college-sailing specific knowledge, especially team racing, to the Stanford program.

A native of Hull, Mass., Ustach has privately coached some of the top junior sailors in the country to a 420 North American championship, a U.S. Youth Championship, selection to the U-18 U.S. Sailing Team, and several ISSA National appearances. Most recently, Frank comes to Stanford from Chicago Yacht Club, where he served as Director of Sailing and Head Coach for the past two years.

Ustach’s own sailing accomplishments and pursuits include a 49er campaign for the 2008 Olympic games, where he finished 8th at the U.S. Olympic Trials, and was selected to represent the U.S. at the 2007 ISAF World Games held in Cascais, Portugal. Ustach also actively competes on the highly competitive U.S. team racing circuit, where his team, the Woonsocket Rockets, finished 3rd at the 2007 U.S. Team Race Championship for the Hinman Trophy.

“I’ve learned so much since graduating from collegiate sailing and I look forward to sharing that knowledge with this young team,” said Ustach. “I am especially excited to work with the team racing squad in the spring and hope to build off of last year’s strong finish at Nationals.”

2009-10 SEASON PREVIEW

Despite losing All-American honorable mention skipper Taylor Grimes and three time All-American crew Kelly McKenna, Cardinal Sailing is returning many of its starters from last year’s varsity squad, and looks to continue its success under head coach John Vandemoer.

Vandemoer is returning for his second year and looks to build off last year’s strengths and conference supremacy.

Last year, they were the only PCCSC team to qualify for all three spring national championships. The team also won four out of the six national qualifiers in the PCCSC in Vandemoer’s inaugural year.

The team has also added a new assistant coach, Frank Ustach from Boston College, whose team racing background will help strengthen the Cardinal squad this spring.

The team will look to upperclassmen Cole Hatton, Megan Grove, Peter Stemler, and Hannah Burroughs for leadership and direction as the season progresses. The sophomore class, led by Nick Dugdale and Justin Doane will play a valuable role in the team’s growth and success. While small, the well credentialed freshman recruiting class of Eliza Richartz, Wade Hatton, Rebecca King, and Katie Lund look to push the upperclassmen and take the team to a new level.

With six veteran players abroad or injured this past fall, the team will look fondly upon the return of Alex Dunlap, Laura Garvey, Katie Jewett, Ale Lynberg, Ben Pedrick, and Hayley Tobin.

With such a large percentage missing in the fall, especially crews, the team welcomed eight walk-on crews with little to no sailing experience. The walk-on crews were thrown right into the mix, sailing some of the top regattas ICSA has to offer including the Navy Fall, the Hoyt at Brown, the Schell Trophy at MIT, and the Urn at Harvard. The enthusiasm, effort, and athleticism they brought to the team helped in an immeasurable way.

Success this season will undoubtedly be the result of a complete team effort.

“Our team strength is clearly our ability to be a team, not one part greater than the other, just a smooth machine which focuses on improvement step by step,” said Vandemoer.

The team had a travel-oriented regatta schedule this fall, sailing eight regattas on the east coast to gain valuable experience for the younger team members.

The Cardinal finished the 2009 fall season strong with two freshmen, Richartz and Wade Hatton, qualifying for the ICSA Singlehanded Nationals, tying for first at the Coed PCCSC Fall Champs, and winning the Women’s Fall Champs for the sixth year in a row.

The team also won every JV-level event this fall, including a 56-point margin of victory at the Stoney Burke, as well as a 31-point margin at the Fall Champships, a true sign of the Cardinal’s depth.

This spring, the team looks to travel less, focusing on fine-tuning certain skills on their home waters, while still building upon the fall season’s strengths.

The team will compete in two major regattas in the off-season, the Rose Bowl at USC, and the Rainbow Invite at Hawaii, where the team will get a glimpse of our PCCSC dinghy national qualifiers venue for April. After winter break, the team will start workouts and team race discussions on a bi-weekly basis, until the season begins February 2.

The team will travel to College of Charleston for spring break to practice in 420s, which is the competition boat for ICSA Nationals, held at the University of Wisconsin, May 25 to June 3.

Due to fundraising, the program was able to purchase three more 420s to bring the personal fleet to 12. This enables the team to conduct a full team practice with the 420s this spring.

FACILITIES

FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT

Built in 2003, the Stanford University Rowing and Sailing Center is widely regarded as one of the best facilities of its kind in the nation. Located in the Port of Redwood City, the Dean Morrison Boathouse is a two story complex with five boat bays, more than 16,000 square feet of space, locker rooms, a conference room/banquet hall, a laundry room, and kitchen area. As the home to the rowing and sailing teams, the Rowing and Sailing Center plays host to five Stanford varsity sports, as well as summer camps, P.E. sailing students, and high school teams throughout the Bay Area.

Stanford Sailing uses the Carl and Shirley Schoof Sailing Docks as its own launch ramp and floating docks. These provide access to Redwood Creek for Stanford’s brand new fleet of 18 FJs and 12 420s. In addition, Stanford owns four Lasers/Laser Radials, five coach boats, and various other boats acquired through the generous support of the keelboat donation program. In 2009, the team was able to purchase an additional three 420s. Now they are able to conduct a full practice with a dozen boats in the water.

The Redwood Creek turning basin adjacent to the sailing facilities provides a flat-water venue due to the protection of Bair Island, a part of the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge located to the northeast. The cold temperatures of the ocean water and the hot temperatures of the California mainland provide a consistent thermal sea breeze in the spring and summer. A sail out to the south San Francisco Bay brings big currents, big wind, and choppy waves that prove to be some of the most fun practices in the spring. The neighbors of the Rowing and Sailing Center include the Pacific Youth Sailing Foundation, the Marine Science Institute, Sequoia Yacht Club and the Seaport Centre, one of the largest biotechnology research complexes in the Bay Area.
