You deserve a treat!MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 13 NATIONAL PEANUT DAY

“When a zoo celebrates International Red Panda Day, most zoos put together a list of activities and enrichment time,” says Sarah Glass, curator of red pandas for Zoo Knoxville in Tennessee. “That may mean more feedings, or they’ll show training sessions or the pandas might get a feeder puzzle to keep them active.” No special events at your zoo? Head to the red panda exhibit as the zoo opens or just before closing, as that’s when the cuties are most active, says Glass. You can also watch the fun at home by checking a webcam like BeardsleyZoo.org/indoor-red-panda-cam.

You know that expressing your thanks to someone can boost your well-being, but it also puts extra pep in their step, say researchers at the University of Central Florida. They had subjects fill out daily surveys at work reporting their energy levels and how appreciated they felt, and found that people felt 17% more energized each time someone showed gratitude for them. “Feeling appreciated sends a signal that you’re positively regarded, and that evokes a sense of vigor—or high energy,” says researcher Maureen Ambrose, Ph.D. “And this increased energy translated to higher levels of optimism, life satisfaction and willingness to help others.”

Spread joy!Give me coffee to change the things I can, and wine to accept the things I can’t.

Loving on your dog is a great way to lift your spirits—and your pooch loves it too! When Rover.com asked 1,000 dog owners about their dog’s love language, physical touch (like hugging and petting) was the top response, followed by quality time, gifts and kind words. “The act of cuddling your dog causes the brain to release the

happy hormone, oxytocin,” explains Arden Moore, author of What Dogs Want, who is also known as America’s pet health and safety coach. “It’s a feel-good hormone: For the pet it makes them feel safe, secure and adored, and it boosts our feelings of happiness.” Plus, snuggling helps you and your pup feel connected!

Says Greenspan, “The key is to cook it on low heat for a longer period of time, which gives it a chance to crisp up.”

“My favorite TV to be my birth mom!”to be my birth mom!”

As a 10-year-old girl, Lisa watched Lynne (far right) on the mid-’70s TV show That’s My Mama.Little did she know, Lynne was her own mama

A s her cellphone dinged, Lisa Wright glanced at the screen, and her breath caught. Her DNA results from 23andMe were in. This is it…I’ ll

finally know about my past, her heart thundered.Clicking on the message, Lisa immediately looked

for matched relatives. At the top of the list was the name Carlton Moody, followed by the words: This person is your uncle.

Nervous but curious, Lisa messaged him, explaining she’d had her DNA tested. It says I am your niece.

Intrigued, Carlton replied and, soon after, the two connected by phone. When she shared her birthdate, Carlton knew Lisa was indeed his niece, the daughter his sister had given up as a teen.

“What is my mother’s name?” Lisa asked.“It’s Lynne,” he responded. “Lynne Moody.”The name sounded familiar. So when they hung up,

Lisa Googled her name and was stunned. She instantly recognized her—from TV!

A joyous discoveryAdopted at 3 months old in Los Angeles by Naomi and Phillip Wright, Lisa was told early on that she had been adopted. “Your mommy truly loved you but was really young and couldn’t take care of you,” they explained. Grateful for the gift they had been given, the Wrights gave Lisa a loving and happy life. One of her favorite memories was gathering around the TV with the family every Wednesday night to watch their favorite sitcom, That’s My Mama. A character on the show was played by Lynne Moody, and as a little girl, Lisa had always thought she was so pretty.

Being adopted, Lisa didn’t look like anyone in her family, and she’d often wonder who she did look like, but she was genuinely happy, so she left the past in the past. Decades rolled by, Lisa built a career as an account executive, became a mother in her early 20s, then raised

At age 54, Lisa Wright, who’d been adopted as an infant, decided to do a DNA test to find out more about her heritage…and it revealed shocking news: Her biological mom was a TV star she’d watched her whole life!

“We feel grateful and blessed to have found each other,”says Lisa (right)with her mother, Lynne Moody

POWER OF LOVE

Page 16: Woman's world usa september 13,2021

“My favorite TV starstar turned out turned out her son, Nic, as a single mom. Over the years, she would wonder about her ancestry. So would Nic. When she was 54, with his urging, Lisa decided to have her DNA tested by 23andMe.

Now she gazed in awe at Lynne’s picture on her computer screen, not because her bio-logical mother was a celebrity but because for the first time someone looked like her.

Role of a lifetimeJust then, Lisa’s phone rang. “Is this my daughter?” a woman’s voice asked.

“Oh, my God…is this my mother?” Lisa blurted as tears streamed.

“Yes, sweetie, this is your mom,” Lynne wept, words she dreamed of saying for 54 years.

Lynne had just turned 18 and moved to Hollywood to try to make it as an actress when she had Lisa. Deep in her heart, Lynne longed to keep her baby but she had no job. No money. So she signed the adoption papers, praying her daughter would have a good, happy life.

Lynne went on to have a successful career on TV and in films, appearing in Knots Landing and Roots. Still, there was always a void in her heart. Over the years, she tried to find her daughter, registering on Ancestry.com and on an adoption reunion site. When

her brother called and told her he’d spoken to her daughter, Lynne sobbed in disbelief and in gratitude.

She immediately called Lisa.“I want to see you,” she wept.Learning they lived only minutes apart,

they arranged to meet at Lynne’s house the next day. On June 2, 2018, as Lisa’s car rolled into the driveway, it was as if all time just melted away.

“My baby!” Lynne cried, hugging her daughter.

“Mom,” Lisa choked. From that moment on, the two

became inseparable. They enjoyed discovering many similarities, such as hav-ing the same mannerisms, sharing the same values

and both being animal lov-ers. Lynne was thrilled when,

soon after, she met her grand-son. Having never had any other

children, he was an unexpected gift. “If my adoptive parents were still alive, I

know they would be so happy for me,” Lisa shares. “I feel so grateful and blessed!”

Lynne smiles. “God works in mysterious ways,” the now-75-year-old beams. “No matter where life took me, there was always a void knowing I had a daughter out there. But if you keep the faith, you just may get a miracle like we did!”

1 Boosts immunity!In-person visits with family not only

jump-start joy by releasing the “feel-good” hormone oxytocin in your brain, but a study published in Psychological Science found that people who often receive hugs from loved ones are signif-icantly less likely to get sick than those who don’t. The reason? Study authors say physical contact and emotional sup-port help ward off potential infection.

2 Slashes stress!“Interacting with a close social

network—especially face-to-face as opposed to digitally—significantly reduces stress, depression and anxi-ety,” says Dr. Todd Thatcher, D.O. In fact, researchers have found that being physically present with loved ones fos-ters a stronger feeling of emotional sup-port, which helps dial down levels of the stress hormone cortisol.

3 Increases longevity!People who have satisfying rela-

tionships with family and friends, and see them often, are significantly happier and healthier than those who do not, says an article from Harvard Health Publishing. What’s more, one recent Harvard study found that strong relationships and frequent in-person connections protect against damaging health issues and increase longevity by up to 50%!

Celebrity stylist Samantha Brown suggests adding pops of color (like a bold bag), contrasting textures (like a leather belt) or playful patterns (like leopard-print shoes). “This ensures the neutral fabric won’t come off looking dull.”

Sidestep creases for all-day style

The thin fabric is prone to wrinkling, so Brown advises toting a DIY spray to keep it pressed on the go. To do: Mix 1 cup of water, 1 tsp. of fabric softener and 1 tsp. of rubbing alcohol in a spray bottle; spritz on creases and tug on fabric to loosen them.

Make it luxe in the evening

Chambray can skew casual, but it’s easy to take the fabric from day to night by adding an eye-catching piece of jewelry, says Brown. “A glitzy statement necklace or dazzling dangle earrings pair well with any chambray item.”

The menthol in peppermint increases circulation to the scalp, promoting blood and oxygen flow to hair fol-licles, which encourages strands to grow in stronger and fuller. And because the herb has an invigo-rating aroma, it also perks up the brain to quickly boost alertness and productivity.

TRY IT! Mix 1 Tbs. of coconut oil (it plumps strands) and 3 drops of pepper-mint essential oil. Massage onto damp scalp for 1 minute. Let sit 5 minutes, then rinse.

With all that’s going on, who wants to worry about rising blood pressure? Not you! And while new Cedars-Sinai research suggests that the “top number” of a woman’s blood pressure should optimally be 10 points lower than that for a man (or 110 mmHg instead of 120), these strategies are proven to deliver lasting results in minutes a day

Brushed onto garlic bread, stirred into pasta, drizzled over roasted veggies—the tasty ways to enjoy extra-virgin olive oil (EVOO) are endless. And Spanish research reveals getting about 4 Tbs. of EVOO in your daily diet can slash blood pressure by up to 15 points in four weeks. Polyphenols in the oil boost the production of nitric oxide, a sub-stance that helps blood vessels dilate.

Remember when you were little and your mom scolded you for wiggling around all the time? Turns out, that wiggling is a goodthing! Australian scientists found that folks who broke up prolonged periods of sitting with 3-minute walk breaks every half-hour lowered their blood pressure 10 points. Study authors say sitting makes the heart work harder to move blood out of lower limbs, and brief bouts of moving around are all it takes to counter the effect.

Have you ever broken open a fresh pome-granate? If so, you know how decadent those plump kernels can be. And they’re not only delicious enjoyed fresh, in smoothies or sipped as juice, they’re pressure-easing powerhouses: Research in Clinical Nutritionshows eating 1 to 2 pomegranates daily low-ers blood pressure by up to 11 points in a month. Antioxidants in the juice fight the cellular stress that causes pressure to climb.

A compound called astaxanthin, which abounds in sea algae, enhances the elastic-ity of blood vessels and improves circula-tion to bring blood pressure down. So say experts reporting in the Asia Pacific Journal of Clinical Nutrition, who found that supple-menting with astaxanthin daily lowered blood pressure by 11 points within eight weeks. To outsmart a stye—a painful bump

on the edge of the eyelid—reach for a

potato. It may sound like a strange remedy, but spuds contain mildly astringent, anti-inflammatory compounds and an enzyme that breaks down oils and dead skin cells that clog eye glands to trigger the growths. Next time you notice the redness and swell-ing of an impending stye, try this: Heat a potato, then cut it in half. When cooled to a comfortable temperature, wrap half with a thin cloth and place it cut side down on the affected eye for 10 to 15 minutes daily.

A 20-minute stroll cuts bloat and cramps by 58% and provides complete relief in as little as 1 hour, Chinese scientists say. Moving the large muscles in your hips and thighs stimulates nerves that tell your intestines it’s time to “go”!

Cooler fall days just got even more glorious—and you want to have the happy energy to enjoy every minute! Here, delightful ways to perk up

The right-now RxWhen you’re feeling bloated and backed up, you know drugstore remedies can get things moving. But you don’t like how, um, dramatic their effects can be. And you worry (with good reason) that your body could become dependent upon them. Luckily, safe, natural cures can quickly get things moving—just find the one right for you

Found! Mood boosters better than meds

Your best gentle constipation reliever

Saying good morning to sunshine is twice as effective at lifting your spirits as Prozac, German scientists say. Basking in morning light acts as a natural SSRI, a commonly prescribed medication used to treat blue moods, by triggering the brain to release a flood of feel-good hormones like serotonin.Plus, setting your internal body clock helps hormones stay balanced the rest of the day. Tip: Step outside to enjoy the changing sky as the sun rises or to watch the clouds float by over the treetops. University of Alabama researchers found seeing both land and sky improved folks’ levels of happiness for hours.

Ever notice that eating an orange brightens your mood? There’s good reason, according to a study in Biomedical Journal. Breathing in a compound called d-limonene, which is released when you peel back the skin of an orange, works as well as Valium at releas-ing calming brain waves, boosting your mood for up to 24 hours. Tip: Inhale the citrus scent through your nose for a count of 4, hold for 8, then exhale for 10. Repeat

5 times. Yale research shows deep breathing calms your

autonomic nervous system to quash stress in 60 seconds.

Research published in the journal Nature finds that the pineapple in the comfort-food classic contains sky-high levels of the happi-ness hormone serotonin and the amino acid tryptophan, which help your body ramp up mood-leveling hormones. The payoff: A slice lifts your spirits just like the popular antidepressant Prozac. Need a quick fix? Blend 1 cup of frozen pineapple into a smoothie, sip and go! —K.E. Kluznik

Do you wake up in discomfort? Constipation doubles your risk of sleep-sabotaging abdominal pain since your intestines can spasm as they try to keep stool moving. Triphala, an herbal remedy popular in India, can provide relief by morning and lessen the odds of nighttime cramping by 67% if you take 1,000 mg. at bedtime, Canadian scientists say. It gently stimulates intestinal walls while also calm-ing pain nerves. To try: Now Foods Triphala (iHerb.com).

If you’re sometimes constipated and other times have diarrhea, it may be IBS (irritable bowel syn-drome). Research in the Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility suggests that taking 2 Tbs. of aloe vera juice daily cuts constipation risk by up to 59%. Aloe’s gentle laxatives also ease diarrhea-triggering intestinal inflammation.

Always constipated? Enjoying 1 cup of mango daily can double the number of bowel movements you have each week. So say University of Connecticut scientists, who found that mango’s gallotanninsprod your intestines to release GI-regulating hormones.

For occasional constipation, try magnesium oxide before bed. A Journal of Neurogastroenterology and Motility study found this mineral helped GI muscles con-tract, improving bowel func-tion in 8 hours (results better than OTC laxatives). To try: Oxy-Powder (Walmart.com).

Fibroids?By age 50, up to 80% of women have one of these benign growths, which can cause pain-ful abdominal pressure and other symptoms. A natural fix: Take 3,000 IUs of vitamin D-3 daily. Scientists at Nashville’s Meharry Medical College say D-3 shrinks fibroids by up to 75% and reduces the risk of future growths by 40% by

the same relief. One option: Twice daily, massage a mixture of 8 drops of wintergreen essen-tial oil and 2 Tbs. of lotion into your knees. This could cut joint stiffness and pain by 60% in 10 days. Scientists say wintergreen’s methyl salicylate relaxes tight muscles and calms pain nerves.

Carpal tunnel?Hand and wrist pain can be treated without surgery almost 85% of the time, British doc-tors say. Turns out, a roll of tape may be all you need to get relief. University of Kentucky research suggests that sitting up straight (instead of slouching) eases pressure on nerves in your wrist, calming inflammation and pain by up to 67%. Back pain?Good news: At least 90% of back injuries heal on their own within six weeks. And for chronic pain, physical therapy and medication offer as much relief as surgery, University of California scientists say. Before booking a visit with a surgeon, try taking 250 mg. of boswelliadaily. Scientists at Connecticut’s Manchester Memorial Hospital say the herb’s boswellic acidscurb inflammation and speed healing, easing back pain by as much as 70% in one week.

Worried surgery might be the only solution for your aches and pains? Before going under the knife, consider these natural remedies to see if your body can heal on its own!

Why you don’tneed surgery!

End age-related facial swelling with an ancient stone! Sweeping a jade roller

To erase eye bagsRoll the smaller end of the stone from the inner corner of the eye out and around the orbital bone, then up toward the ears. Repeat 5 times per eye. Tip: Apply a pea-size amount of an eye cream first to prevent tugging.

**Tropical Life Sciences Research 2010 “Effects of Tocotrienol Supplementation on Hair Growth in Human Volunteers”Beoy, Woei and Hay, University Sains Malaysia.

*11/120,268, US PATENT, HAIR GROWTHFORMULATION, HOVIS, SDN BHD

Researchers studied an area of the scalp equal to 2x2 cm and counted the hairs at the beginning of the study, at 4 months and at 8 months. At the end of the study, the participants on the tocotrie-nol supplement had gained on average 34.5% more hair or an increase in average hair count from 285 to 383 hairs.**

Both studies used a patented

tocotrienol complex, which in the USA

is available in the product Hair GroTM,

sold at Walgreens and other

THE FRUIT EXTRACT

Scientists at the University of Kuala Lumpur have identified compounds in palm fruits, called tocotrienols, which significantly help promote hair growth. They are thought to reduce inflammation levels in the scalp, which is commonly associated with thin hair.

THE STUDY RESULTS

Repeatedly, studies are confirming the ef-fect of tocotrienols in helping hair count. In a clinical study done to obtain the US patent, scientist could show that everyone in the study group taking 50 mg of a tocot-rienol complex, had positive results after 5 months.

THE SECOND STUDY

A second, larger study, was done to confirm the results. The study group was monitored for the number of hairs in a pre-determined scalp area at 0, 4 and 8 months. The results were impressive. Hair growth increased sig-nificantly as compared to the placebo group, recording a 16% increase at 4 months and a 34.5% increase at the end of the 8-months, compared to a 0.1% decrease in the control group.

It has felt amazing to visit with loved ones in person again these past few months. And it turns out socializing does more than boost your mood—it shores up your health too!

OR SNAP A PHOTO! In a University of Vermont study, dieters who

daily lost 10% of their body weight in six months. Tracking helps you

OR OPEN THE CURTAINS! When learning something new, like how to craft a mum centerpiece, sit by a sunny window and let the light shine in. Soaking up the sun for 30 minutes improves recall of new information by 90%. How? It prompts the release of more memory- enhancing norepinephrine in the brain, University of Arizona scientists say.

OR SAVOR SOUP! Tomato soup counts toward your five-a-day fruit and vegetable goal. That’s key since nutrients in produce boost your immune sys-tem and lower your risk of a cold, U.K. scientists say.

Sounds counterintuitive, but regularly socializing with six or more people, say, by hosting a potluck dinner or joining a book club, makes you 43% less likely to develop cold symptoms than socializing with one or two people, Carnegie Mellon scientists say. Interacting with a wide variety of folks exposes you to more types of germs, which acts as exercise for your immune system, making it stronger.

Attending any type of religious services weekly (in-person or via Zoom) cuts lung aging by up to 50%, Harvard scientists say, by making it easier for your ticker to take in oxygen. The optimism boost you get from sharing spirituality with like-minded folks spurs a 20% reduction in an inflammation-triggering protein, taking the squeeze off lung tissue so it’s easier to breathe.

Strengthen lungsby giving thanks

Protect your heartby visiting next doorBring a neighbor your favorite fall bulbs, join your neighborhood association or share one of your famous apple pies with the new family that moved in next door. For every connection you make with those close to where you live, you’ll lower your risk of heart trouble by 22% and stroke by 15%, a University of Michigan study found. Having strong ties to your community increases feelings of safety, trust and support, which lower heart-harming stress.

OR SIP A LATTE! Drinking two cups of caffeinated coffee daily lowers the risk of serious heart trouble 30%, University of Colorado scientists say. Coffee has protec-tive polyphenols, plus German scientists

say caffeine wards off damage to heart cells.

Sharpen memoryby joining a knitting circle

Dodge coldswith a book club

You may have suspected as much, and now University of Rochester researchers confirm that enjoying your favorite hob-bies with pals, say, in a knitting circle or bowling league, really is more satisfying than doing them alone. That’s because the presence of other folks intensifies the expe-rience. A surprising bonus? Joining leisure groups also boosts memory! According to University of Pittsburgh scientists, meeting regularly to enjoy a shared activity prompts the growth of more gray matter in mem-ory-managing areas of the brain (the tem-poral lobe and orbitofrontal cortex), keeping recall sharp. Tip: Find hobby groups at Meetup.com/topics/hobbies.

OR TRY CAR KARAOKE! While running errands, switch on the radio and sing out loud as you drive. Doing so tones respiratory muscles and increases lung capacity as effectively as walking a brisk 2.5 miles per hour, reveals a new study from the U.K.

is contagious!

SLIMMING SUCCESS

Ultra-easy To try Tosca’s approach, enjoy 5–6 sittings, one every 2–3 hours. Make meals with 4 oz. of lean protein, unlimited low-starch veggies and a little good fat; for snacks, have 2 oz. of protein plus fat and veggies/fruit. Add 1⁄2 cup of quinoa daily; skip dairy except full-fat Greek yogurt. Aim for 64 oz. of water daily; a cup of coffee or tea is fine. Always get a doc-tor’s okay to try a new plan.

Tosca’s strategy is simple and sooth-ing: You enjoy

5–6 small sittings a day, each packed with protein, good fat, fiber and antioxidants. These

nutrients make meals and snacks exceptionally filling.

Plus, you get one every 2–3 hours, “so there’s no hunger,

no psychological sense of going without. It keeps you calm and comfortable—and I’ve found that’s the key to success when weaning off sugar,” says Tosca,

62, who shed 84 pounds and stumbled onto a new career as she experimented with ways to break her own sugar addiction years ago.

If results seem dramatic, here’s why: Scientists say sugar’s impact goes far beyond empty calories. All the sweets and pro-cessed carbs we eat gradually damage cells, making it hard for the hormone insulin to get sugar inside of them to be burned for energy. We make more insulinto force the sugar in, but no luck. Our cells, starving for fuel,

If your waist keeps expanding despite your best efforts, “a gentle sugar detox can make all the difference,” insists nutrition expert Tosca Reno, mega-selling author of The Eat-Clean Diet. “There’s sugar in 80% of the food on supermarket shelves. So we may not realize it, but most of us are in the grips of sugar addiction.” Studies show that, like opioid drugs, sugar hijacks the brain’s pleasure center, stoking constant cravings. The average person now consumes 152 pounds of sugar per year, an excess that wreaks havoc on body chemistry and leads to fatigue, rapid belly-fat storage, blocked fat loss and a high risk for many diseases. Yet most diets feed the addiction or do little to soften withdrawal. “I saw the need for a plan that feels good and gets the job done,” says Tosca, who created Strike Sugar 2.0. Women are raving. “They tell me their cravings are gone and they’re vibrating with energy and radiating joy and health.”

BEFORE AFTER

IT WORKS!

After a lifetime of sneaking candy bars and late-nightfridge raids, Sandra Mendoza found her go-to diets stopped working. “I was gaining weight, my belly kept getting bigger, my cholesterol and blood sugar kept going up. I felt powerless,” recalls the California grand-mother, 57. Then she heard about Tosca’s plan. “I loved that it was working for women with sugar addic-tions.” She found protein-rich mini meals (her favorite: air-fryer salmon with sautéed veggies) worked won-ders. Her belly flattened right away. “I had some crav-ings on days 9 and 10, but that was it!” After the detox was over, she stuck with the basics. All told, she shed 46 pounds and five jean sizes, and her blood work is in great shape. “For the first time ever, sugar is not con-trolling me. If you’re looking for freedom, try this plan!”

have heat-and-eat meal options on hand. “It was so doable, and my body responded,” recalls the Oregon grandmother, 59. “The cravings for mocha lattes and popcorn went away, and my mood, memory, joint pain and energy all got better. Even my menopause ‘sweats’ have stopped.” Of course, it’s how fast her tummy disappeared that has people begging for her secrets. Down four jean sizes in 40 days, “it’s almost completely flat now. It’s abs-olutely fantastic,” she laughs. “I’m telling everyone who asks about this!”

Real-world wow“Before Tosca’s sugar detox, my cravings never let up,” shares Stefanie Rodriguez. Her weight crept higher, and she hid in loose clothes—but couldn’t escape her aches, pains and exhaustion. A pal suggested Tosca’s plan, and the California mom, 38, began whipping up protein-rich mini meals—like turkey lettuce wraps and herbed yogurt on detox bread (recipe below). “I can 100% say I never felt hungry and my cravings vanished in days!” After four weeks, “my waist was already 7.75 inches smaller.” Amazed, she kept at it and has traded her old size 18s for 10s.

Then there’s Debi Stevens, who says both keto and inter-mittent fasting made her cranky and failed to get rid of her “menopause belly.” She found Tosca’s Facebook page. Intrigued, she joined a group using the Strike Sugar plan. She batch-cooked things like chicken dishes and healthy meatballs so she’d always

brings down cravings and inflammation. It also means fat burn, especially around the abdominal area, goes way up.”

The secrets that make Tosca’s approach so

effective? First, it gently cuts blood sugar–spiking foods that would do more dam-age. Second, it

delivers lots of protein in small,

steady doses. Arciero explains that the body can

use small doses most effectively, absorbing maximum amino acids to repair sugar-damaged cells. Cells heal—often in about four weeks, the length of Tosca’s detox. And all the while, magic happens. “Many people imme-diately feel less hunger and more energy and start losing weight,” confirms Dr. Bradley. “I just had a patient in constant fibro-myalgia-like pain try protein-rich mini meals. The pain just went away. The results are very impressive and gratifying!”

trigger intense cravings for carbsand sweets. Meanwhile, all that unburned sugar circulates in the blood through our entire systems, causing inflamma-tion and damage, “even in the brain,” notes Elizabeth Bradley, M.D., director of the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Functional Medicine. Unburned sugar is finally stored as belly fat. We grow tired and foggy, and diabetes and other diseases may take hold. But there’s good news…

Restore fast fat burnWhen scientists at Skidmore College tested a plan similar to Tosca’s, folks not only lost up to 72 pounds in 12 weeks, they “cut levels of insulin in half,” reports study head Paul Arciero, Ph.D. That’s more than com-mon diabetes drugs! “When insulin comes down like that, it means the body is handling blood sugar much better, which

“This amino acid Doctors told Deb Provin-Martin that her acid reflux had caused an incurable precancerous condition and that only being on medication for the rest of her life could keep it at bay. But with a simple supplement, she proved them wrong!

Your acid reflux has evolved into a serious precancerous condi-

tion,” Deb Provin-Martin was told after an endoscopy. Deb’s stomach dropped. The Portland, Oregon, then-51-year-old had been suffering from heartburn for years. So she’d expected to hear the pain in her throat and chest was acid-related, but assumed it would be easily treatable.

She listened ner-vously as the doctor explained how her condition, called Barrett’s esophagus, occurs when stomach acid regularly comes up into the throat and damages the tissue lining the esophagus, which increases the risk of cancer. “There is no cure, so you’re going to have to be on medication for the rest of your life,” he told her, prescrib-ing proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to reduce stomach acid.

Deb was terrified. She had read about PPIs and their potential side effects. “I really

don’t want to take them. I don’t want to take any medication,” she said. The doctor openly laughed when Deb, who was attending nutrition school at the time, told him she wanted to see if she could heal by

adjusting her diet first. “This isn’t something

you can fix with diet,” he said, dismissively.

Frustrated, Deb didn’t bother responding. I’ ll

just figure this out for myself then, she

thought defiantly.

A hopeful solutionDoing some research, Deb learned that certain foods can cause the esophageal sphincter, the muscle that prevents stom-ach acid from backing up, to relax, causing reflux. Some common triggers include chocolate, coffee and wine—some of Deb’s favorites. She even did wine tastings as a hobby. Still, she immediately cut out all three.

Deb had also read about the amino acid L-glutamine,a powerful antioxidant and

The amino acid L-glutamine curbs cravings by temporarily raising blood-glucose levels. In one study, a group given L-glutamine beforehand ate 25% less sugar when given free access to vending machines. Best dose: 500 mg. three times a day. Note: Diabetics and prediabetics should talk to their doctor before supplementing.

Heals the gut lining

Cells in the intestine use L-glutamine for maintenance and repair, which is key to warding off the intestinal per-meability, or “leaky gut,” that leads to tiredness, brain fog and other health concerns. Researchers in The Lancetsuggest supplementing with 1,000 mg. daily.

Protects the liver

Supplementing with L-glutamine can reverse fatty liver disease and the weight gain, inflammation and fatigue it causes, reveals a study in the journal Nutrients.Study author Ina Bergheim, Ph.D., explains that the acid blocks enzymes linked to the development of fatty liver and suggests 1,000 mg. daily.

anti-inflammatory that reduces the swelling and pain that reflux causes, and helps strengthen the esophageal sphincter. Hopeful, Deb began taking 3 grams a day of Metagenics Glutagenics L-glutamine powder ($62 for a three-month supply; you can also find a variety of L-glutamine powders online starting as low as $10).

Deb then set a three-month test period—vowing if this didn’t help, she’d try the medi-cation. But to her joy, the pain, coughing and throat-clearing caused by the reflux dramati-cally improved in just weeks. As her symptoms abated, she switched to just 1–2 grams per day of the L-glutamine supple-ment, and after another three months, Deb felt so good that she slowly started adding back in some of her reflux trigger foods.

“I had my first glass of wine nine months after giving it up, and it was awesome!” Deb beamed to a friend. “I was even more excited when I woke up the next day and there was no pain!” Soon after, Deb went for a follow-up endoscopy with a new doctor who said that, remarkably, the test showed no sign of Barrett’s esophagus or precancerous cells.

Although neither doc-tor would acknowledge that she had cured her acid reflux and Barrett’s esophagus with L-glutamine and her diet, Deb says the results speak for them-selves. “I don’t get reflux any-more and the damage is healed,” smiles the 58-year-old, who now owns the health coaching busi-ness SustainYourLife.com. “I’ll raise a glass of wine to that!”

Shorten your bucket list“Ask yourself, what are two things you’d regret not doing?” says Ryan. Then give them a clear time line. “Look ahead two or three years. For example, I wrote that in 2023, I want to spend three weeks in Australia.” Giving yourself a deadline makes you accountable to your dreams, she assures. “Women tell me all the time, ‘I wish had done X sooner,’ so get out there and start doing.”

Feel ‘time rich’“So many retirees say, ‘I wonder how I ever had time to work!’ because time slips through their fingers,” reveals Bushey, who advises having two daily rou-tines, anything from walking to praying, to structure your day.

where they want to live a bit more,” says expert Robin Ryan. “Many people want to downsize, so as soon as they retire, they move.” But relocating

even 45 minutes away can be a huge change. “Consider

renting for a year instead of buy-ing right away, and knock on a few doors, asking folks what they think of their community. It pays to put yourself out there to ensure it’s the right fit.”

Retire the ‘r word’In interviewing scores of retir-ees, Marilyn Bushey found that most of them had an aversion to the word “retirement.” “Call it your ‘next chapter’ instead, because you’ll likely have more than just one,” she says. “Ask yourself what’s important to you and what brings you ‘aliveness.’” That may mean spending more time with hobbies or doing part-time work, volunteering or taking classes. “This next phase of life brings free-dom, but freedom can be overwhelming—just trying to envision the type of ‘retirement’ you want is the first step.”

Grab an index card“Jot a few of your resources and challenges on an index card, such as your ‘team,’ mentors or loved ones who’ll help you, as

Once you create this backbone, you’ll feel more purposeful with your time. In fact, studies show the happiest retirees have about four hobbies while the least happy have fewer than two.

Widen your social circleWhen folks on the cusp of retirement are asked what they think they’ll miss most, they often say it’s the paycheck. But when asked that question a year after retirement, they say it’s friendships and co-workers, reveals expert Marilyn Watson. “Whether you join a book club or volunteer, it’s important to keep those ties vital because they’ll keep you vital.” Adds Bushey, “Just follow your dreams and keep exploring—you’re free to design your life and make a personal decision about what this chapter will be.”

Soak up the last weeks of summer with a backyard gathering that’ll bring out everyone’s inner camper. From treats to rustic touches, it’s a sweet way to spend a weekend afternoon!

GOOD TIMES GUIDE

Add style with festive settings

Russell furthered the camp-inspired feel with fun place settings! To get a similar look, lay a bandana ($10 for 12, OrientalTrading.com) down and top with a camping-themed paper plate (we like Camco Life Is Better at the Campsite Paper Plates, $5 for 25, Amazon.com). Add on-theme napkins and trinkets.

Treat them to a s’mores stationA s’mores station makes dessert a breeze! Just line up graham crackers, marshmallows and chocolate bars on trays. Then invite guests to toast marsh-mallows over a grill (or nestle a Sterno can in a fireproof bucket filled with rocks) using metal skewers. For extra fun, include unexpected treats like peanut butter cups or caramel-filled candy bars.

Make the buffet at your backyard “campout” a standout by showcasing festive treats and woodsy accents, like party pro Laura Russell (MakeLifeLovely.com) did here. For a similar look, set a green cloth atop your table; add a faux turf runner for a grassy look. Top with wood slices, crates and baskets full of treats for a rustic touch. Then, line up berry bins and paper cups filled with Goldfish crackers and gummy worms (“fish bait”). Hint: Create a fun centerpiece by placing an inflatable fire (OrientalTrading.com) on top of a wood stump.

3 tips for ‘campout’ joy!

1 Serve ‘campfire cakes’For a dessert that doubles as decor,

follow party pro Laura Russell’s lead with campfire cupcakes! First, bake a batch of chocolate cake mix in paper lin-ers; let cool. Tint vanilla icing in orange or yellow hues and frost cupcakes. Press a few chocolate “rocks” ($9 per pound, Nuts.com) around the edge of icing, then add “roasting marshmal-lows” by inserting pretzel sticks into mini marshmallows and pushing the sticks into the icing.

2 Create a yard tentEnhance the ambience at your

campout with a tent that’s big enough for a group. (Bonus: It creates a shady spot for guests to sit.) To do: String a clothesline between trees, then drape 1 or 2 king-sized sheets over the line. Use clothespins to secure the sheets on the clothesline, then spread out each “tent flap” and weigh down the edges of the sheets with bricks. Place a rug inside your tent; add cushions. Tip: Create “tables” by turning over milk crates.

3 Have a ‘field day’For an activity that’s sure to get

everyone laughing, have “field day” activities. Set up stations with simple group games like ring toss, cornhole or Twister. Or have a few fun competitions like a three-legged race, dodgeball or an egg-on-a-spoon race and offer winners small trinkets, scratch-off lottery tickets or award ribbons!

Refresh guests with a signature mason jar cocktailThe light, refreshing flavors of mint and lime in mojitos awaken taste buds between bites of delicious treats. For camp-inspired flair, serve each in a mason jar. (Bonus: You can prep them before your party, add a lid and tote to your campsite in a cooler.) To make each: Muddle 4 to 5 mint leaves with 2 Tbs. of sugar and 2 Tbs. of lime juice in the base of a mason jar. Fill with ice, then add 1 oz. of white rum; fill the rest of the glass with club soda. Gently stir all the flavors; garnish with mint leaves.

Simplify serving with a pretty picnic-style setupLimit trips back and forth to your house for supplies by placing everything you need in a classic picnic basket. First, line the basket with a small towel to protect the base from spills. Pack your heaviest items on the bot-tom (like bottles of juice or water) and layer another towel on top—wedge the towel between bottles to keep them from rolling and to add a little insulation. Then, bring out plastic pitchers, cups and other serving helpers on an easy-to-tote tray.

Light up the day with bloom-kissed lanterns

All it takes is some cheery blooms and a few seconds to create a lovely lantern that also acts as an eye-catching centerpiece! (Plus, the glass lantern helps show off a pillar with interesting texture—like the beeswax-wrapped candle shown here—while also shielding it from breezes.) Get the look by “shopping” your home for an old lantern or picking one up from the craft store (like 13" White Wooden Lantern, $17, Michaels.com). Then, pop a candle or battery-run votive into the glass lantern; sprinkle base of candle with a few daisies or mums. Place the lantern on a table and surround with snippets of flowers and a few candles in ceramic holders.

Chalkboards aren’t just for the classroom!

This trendy paint technique infuses charm

and function into any space. Here, DIY pro

Dori Turner shares the super-easy how-to’s

38 9/13/21 Woman’s World

Add style with

IN THE LIVING ROOM: ACCENT WALL

“Chalk paint is so versatile—it comes in a variety of colors, and it’s easy to work with,” says Turner. Plus, it creates a blank canvas for hand-drawn art on any surface! One stylish idea: a chalk paint accent wall. “Using chalk paint to create a focal wall is an effortless way to offer interest to a neutral living room.” To get the look, use a foam roller to apply 2 to 3 coats of chalk paint (like Krylon Chalkboard Paint, $16 per qt., Amazon.com) to a wall. Let dry for up to 72 hours. Rub chalk over the painted wall to “season” it; erase with a dry towel before use. “For a whimsical feel, freehand a design or use a stencil for a playful pattern, as shown.”

For more style inspiration and

savvy tips: Visit Turner’s design site DoriTurnerInteriors.com or follow her on Instagram @dori.turner.interiors

Page 59: Woman's world usa september 13,2021

IN THE ENTRY: CHIC CLOSET

“Adding coats of chalk paint to a hallway or entryway closet gives an area character and draws the eye without overwhelming,” says Turner. Chalk paint is also functional—it can keep you organized! She suggests using the chalk to jot down reminders or notes for fam-ily members. Tip: To make the surface mag-netic, apply three coats of magnetic primer (like Magnetize-It! Magnetic Primer, $20, Amazon.com) before painting, then hang photos or memos.

IN THE YARD: PRETTY POTS

“Chalk paint isn’t just for furniture or walls,” says Turner. “It can also be used to breathe new life into dated home accents like picture frames or planters.” Here, a few quick coats of paint transform an old terra-cotta pot into a modern planter. To do: Place pot on a piece of newspaper and apply two to three coats of chalk paint. For smaller accents, try spray paint (like Krylon Chalk Spray Paint, $9, Michaels.com). Let dry. Rub a piece of chalk over surface to “season” it; wipe off with a dry towel. Draw on a design or plant name.

paint!IN THE KITCHEN:

PLAYFUL PANTRY

A kitchen door goes from plain to playful with a coat of chalk paint! Whether you’re jotting down gro-cery lists, recipe ideas or draw-ings, the messages will be in full view, Turner says. To do: Apply two to three coats of chalk paint to closet or pantry door. Let dry. Rub chalk over surface to “season” it; wipe off with a dry towel.

Whether it comes in a little cardboard box or plastic con-tainer, gum always seems to find a way to get loose in your bag, which can be especially frustrating if the pieces aren’t individually wrapped and get stuck to the liner. The solu-tion? Look no further than your medicine cabinet! “You can store anything small in old pill bottles, not just medica-tion, and they’re the perfect size to hold a few pieces, or even sticks, of gum,” says organizer Leslie F. Jacobs (LeslieFJacobs.com). “They’re easy to find in your purse, and won’t open on their own, which means your purse will stay sticky-free!”

Handbag chaosHandbag chaossolved!

No matter how carefully you wind headphones or phone chargers before stashing them in your bag, they seem to come out tangled in a knot. Thankfully, sidestep-ping cord chaos is simple with a binder clip or hair clip. “Just roll the cords, then snap a clip on,” suggests Sarah Dunn of Get It Dunn Professional Organizing. The clip secures the cord without eating up valuable bag space.

There’s nothing worse than having a bottle of hand sanitizer explode all over the inside of your bag. To keep the contents of your handbag dry, stash small bottles inside an eyeglass case. Not only will it keep bottles together and easier to reach for, the hard shell of the case—designed to protect fragile glasses—will prevent them from getting squeezed and splattering the inside of your bag.

From unruly phone chargers to rogue receipts, our expert organizers reveal all the clever ways to keep your handbag clutter-free while ensuring essentials are within reach

Your organized homeYour organized home

Corral loose cordswith a binder clip

Why do keys always seem to get lost in your tote? Because they’re heavy, which means they tend to fall into the deepest corner, says Jacobs, who advises storing them on the outside of the bag for easy access. Just put a shower curtain ring or carabiner on your bag’s handle, attach keys and you’ll never lose track of them again!

Keep track of keys with a shower curtain ring

Prevent liquid spills with an eyeglass case

Contain gum in a pill bottle

A wallet stuffed to the gills gobbles up a ton of real estate. “Luckily, it’s easy to streamline,” says organizer Mary Cornetta of Sort and Sweet, Inc. Just choose email receipts instead of paper, and use apps to store credit cards, store cards and coupons in your phone.

‘Slim’ your wallet by going ‘paper-free’

Innovative lighting creates a sparkling winter wonderlandA Bradford Exchange Exclusive design, the Thomas Kinkade “Sparkle of the Season” Illuminated Always in Bloom® Lantern Collection is comprised of hand-crafted, burnished metal lanterns in traditional designs. Beginning with Lantern One, “Love,” each lantern houses a fully-dimen-sional, miniature sculpture recreating one of Thomas Kinkade’s classic holiday paintings. The inviting homes are hand-cast and hand-painted in intricate detail, and light up from within at the touch of a switch. But it is the lights in the Christmas Eve sky above each home that truly make these lanterns shine. Attached to nearly invisible, thin strands of wire, abundant white lights sparkle above each holiday scene inside the lanterns. What’s more, crowning each lan-tern is a hand-crafted Always in Bloom® poinsettia and pine arrangement, each made from materials rivalling the look and feel of the real thing. Tied with festive holiday bows, these flowers and pines will never fade from the peak of their beauty.

Lifelong crafter Laurie Clayton found the perfect way to share her passion

while padding her retirement savings! Here’s how

$$ Cash in this week!$$$ Cash in this week!

“I“I expect to make $25,000 expect to make $25,000 tthis year with my craft blog!”his year with my craft blog!”

Laurie Clayton, 60, North Carolina

Crafting is my favorite thing to do with my three daugh-

ters. I especially enjoy using the Cricut, a cutting machine that allows you to create designs with a variety of materials. So when I noticed a lack of resources on the internet about how to fully embrace the Cricut, I started a blog to fill in the gaps for others!

“I had zero blogging experi-ence but was excited to learn a new skill and pad my retirement fund with earnings. I sought out big-name bloggers and took

courses on starting a profitable blog, and my daughters lent their time and tech skills to help me. After an initial startup cost of about $800, Craft Room Time (CraftRoomTime.com) was up and running.

“I spend my days creating content and making instruc-tional videos to help crafters learn to use the Cricut, organize their craft rooms and craft for profit. I’m active on Pinterest and Facebook and created three groups and two pages on

Facebook to complement the three main areas of my blog. I monetize the blog with ads and a subscription box I sell to help beginners use their Cricut and make popular projects with sup-plies, instructions and videos.

“I continue to invest in train-ing and tools to better my blog, and it’s paying off ! I earned $8,000 in 2020 and I’m pro-jected to more than triple that in 2021. It’s such a joy to share my passion with others, while work-ing with my talented daughters.”

Losing weight is easier when nutrition experts share customized advice about the best foods for you to eat based on your weight-loss goals, health condi-tions and food preferences. Lucky for you, nutri-tional counseling is often available free of charge. For example, Medicare covers fees to consult with a registered dietitian if you have diabetes or kidney disease, many private insurers pay for consultations with a nutrition expert and some workplaces offer to pay for nutritional counseling for employees and family covered under company healthcare plans.

Prefer instructor-led workouts, but dread expen-sive gym memberships? Great news: There are plenty of free exercise classes at community cen-ters, libraries, parks, schools and sports apparel stores. To find them, visit Eventbrite.com, type “workout” into the search bar, then select “free” in the filters menu. You’ll get a list of upcoming no-cost classes near you. Prefer to work out at home? Try instructor-led exercise videos at YouTube.com/c/TheBodyCoachTV and YouTube.com/c/fitnessblender, which offer a wide variety of work-outs for every level of ability—for free!

A U.K. study found that connecting with other women who are trying to lose weight is so effective at boosting motivation, it leads to nearly eight more pounds lost within six months than going it alone. But you don’t need to pay for pricey memberships to hear words of support and share tips with others when you can find in-person weight-loss support groups for free at Meetup.com/topics/weightloss. Also smart: Join an online Facebook group by searching for “weight loss” in the “groups” section. Research shows that getting virtual support provides the same waist-whittling benefits.

Turbocharge your weight-loss efforts—for free!If you’re among the 42% of us who put on extra pounds this year, you don’t need

to fork over a ton of cash to shed them! Here, 4 fee-free ways to save on slimming

Simply tracking your daily weight and foods you consume results in a four-pound loss within four weeks, shows one study. That’s because it keeps you focused on your progress, helping you stick to your goal. And there are plenty of free apps and websites to help you do it! Log daily weigh-ins with the Happy Scale App for iPhone and iPad or Simple Weight Tracker for Android, and chart weight and food intake at Cronometer.com and FatSecret.com. Mallory, I can’t help but notice…” Edith

held up the full cof-feepot. “And pardon me for asking, but either our Salisbury steak is way too tough or you’re chewing on something else.”

“Just thinking about a case.” Officer Mallory O’Brien shoved her cup to the edge of the table for the desired refill.

“The Brooks case.” The waitress nodded. “The whole diner hashed it out at lunch.”

“Oh?” Mallory shot Edith a questioning look.

“Yep, seems to be a done deal. Inside job,” Edith con-tinued. “No forced entry and apparently, someone knew there was a large sum of money in the house. So, that leaves the family.”

If Mallory hadn’t had a mouthful of food, she may have corrected Edith. Professor Brooks had an assistant that was also on the short list.

“We all know that Brooks’ sister Judy is up to her ears in debt, what with that fancy car and the diamond rings she flashes around town, but my money is on Roger,

the nephew. That’s one lazy slacker. He couldn’t even hold down a job as a dishwasher here for very long.”

Mallory kept her expression noncommittal and took a sip. “Good coffee.”

Edith opened her mouth to make another comment when a customer waved for their check. The waitress hustled off as if her tip depended on it, leaving Mallory to her meal.

But Mallory’s mind kept wandering back to the case. A lot of people were aware that there was a large sum of cash in Professor Brooks’ home. After all, he was the treasurer of the Oakdale Book Club, and their biggest fundraiser had happened yesterday. It was his responsibility to deposit

the money as soon as the bank opened, but he had awoken to an empty drawer.

Only three people had keys to his house. His sister, Judy, who watered his plants when he was out of town, his nephew Roger, who did chores occasionally, and his new assis-tant, Ashley, who was helping catalog his artifacts. And since Professor Brooks was a self-professed heavy sleeper, any one of them could have snuck in between the hours of mid-night and eight.

Mallory had interviewed them all and each provided an alibi, but none were bul-letproof. “I went to bed early with a good book,” said his sis-ter who lived alone next door.

“Did you happen to see or hear anything suspicious or out of the ordinary?” Mallory had asked.

“Funny you should ask.” Judy put her hand to chin. “That broke college girl worked pretty late last night. I bet she watched my brother stash the money in the drawer and then came back for it.”

Roger, too, had an excuse. “I got off my shift at the fac-tory at one in the morning. I drove around to unwind and then I went home. You can

check with my girlfriend, she’ll tell you.”

Mallory did. Roger had arrived home at 3 am.

“Yes, I did work late, about 10:30,” Ashley said. “Then I came back to my apartment and spent a few hours logging the information into the com-puter. I slept in because my classes are in the afternoon.”

“Can someone corroborate your story?” Mallory asked.

“Not really.” She shrugged. “My roommate is out of town.”

Three suspects, each with means, motive and opportu-nity, and now Mallory had to decide who was actually telling the truth.

As she swallowed the last of her dinner, details clicked. Mallory raised her cup for another refill and ordered a celebratory dessert. “More coffee and a slice of apple pie, please.” She was heading back to the station for more follow-up, but she was pretty sure she knew who had taken the cash.

billboard. Checking the sched-ule, it looked like there were no more buses that night. I started to panic and asked God to help me. I had no money left for a cab, even if I could find one. So I decided I would have to

walk the 4 miles along a dark, winding country road. It was a scary thought!

Just then, I spotted three nuns making their way to a parked car on the far side of the bus area. I approached them and asked if they spoke English. One did, and when we looked at the schedule, she confirmed my fears. Then, she asked me where I was going. When I told her, she cheerfully replied, “We’re driving right through Montagnac. Come, I’ll give you a lift.”

When we got to Montagnac, my angel stopped a minute from my place, as if she knew where I was staying. Then we both got out of the car and shared a warm hug. I was filled with wonder and peace.

I knew then that I am never alone. I have angels with me.

After going on several group trips, I decided to take a solo vacation in

the south of France so I could explore at my leisure. I rented a studio apartment in the medieval town of Montagnac.

I chose to take buses and trains for day trips. My longest day trip was a visit to the ancient walled city of Carcassonne. It involved two bus transfers and a short train ride. It was awesome, and I was enjoying my exploring so much that I stayed way too long.

I was able to get a train but missed my first bus connection. The sun had set by the time the next bus came along.

Being the only passenger, I was uneasy and, when we pulled into the bus parking area where I would make my final con-nection, I got more anxious. It was quiet, empty and dark, except for a street lamp. No buses were coming and going, and I got a sinking feeling that I might have missed the last one to Montagnac. I asked the bus driver, and he pointed to the schedule that was posted on a A

My Guardian Angel

ANGEL EXPERT SUNNY DAWN JOHNSTON SAYS…

“Anastasia is absolutely right—we are never

alone. Our angels are always with us, guiding us through our intuitive senses. The thing we must remember is to ask for help. We have free will as physi-cal beings, so when we need help, we simply need to ask and be open for the signs that our angels send to us.

“Anastasia’s angels guided her and just when she followed her intuition, the three nuns appeared in perfect divine tim-ing. I believe the nuns were also following their angels’ guidance so that their paths would cross, which kept Anastasia safe.”

“THEIR GENEROSITY DEEPLY TOUCHED MY HEART!”I do tours at a local historic spot, and after a busy Saturday with a very large group, I was invited to share a meal at a nearby

restaurant with a couple from the tour.Sitting right behind our table was another group from

the same tour. We exchanged greetings. After our delicious meal, our waitress brought the bill, and imagine our shock when she told us that the group sitting behind us had paid for each of our meals! I was stunned and speechless. Their generosity and kindness deeply touched my heart. What an amazing gift of appreciation. —Toby Smith, N. Charleston, SC

“IT FEELS GREAT TO HELP!”Recently, a young single mom of three at church asked me if I had a good recipe for cutout cookies she could make for her kids to decorate as an activity. As I got out the recipe, I thought of her working full-time as a nurse and making these, and a thought came: I am retired, why don’t I just make the cookies instead of just giving her the recipe? I made a batch of about 45, boxed them up, along with some sprinkles for the kids to use to decorate the cookies and sent her a text. I told her the cookies were all made and ready for her to pick up. It saved her precious time with her children, gave them a fun activity and made me feel like I had done something special for her. —Lorraine Ehlers, Gretna, NE

“SUCH THOUGHTFUL KIDS!” I am 85 and use a wheelchair when I’m out and about. My daughter and I were shop-ping at a dollar store. We had just checked out and were preparing to wrestle our way out the door

when three kids came running into the store: a girl about 7 and two older boys, maybe 9 and 11. The girl

saw us and quickly commanded the boys, “Hey! Hold the door for these folks!” So, the two boys turned right around and held it open for us. What’s more, they seemed to have a great time doing it too. We thanked them over and over. Such thoughtful kids! —Polly Smith, Locke, NY

5-MINUTE ROMANCE

llie was a woman with more dimples than curves and more wrinkles from life than from laughter. She knew

what it was like to have her heart filled with love and to have it broken. But despite it all, she liked herself more than she had when she was younger. Except for one tiny thing. Just like her 20-something self, she could still fall hard for a good-looking man. The heartthrob of the moment? The man who ran the ice-cream stand at the park.

He was dashing. He was friendly. His smile lit up his face, and his dark brown eyes sparkled. His hair was sprinkled with gray, and his tan proved he liked the out-doors. And the only words she’d ever said to him? “One vanilla cone, please.” Vanilla was comfort and stability—something Ellie needed in the year after her breakup.

Taking her cone from “The Crush” with a smile and a thank you, she made her way to a metal table on a patio lit with strands of white bulbs. Torches were lit to keep the last of the summer’s mosquitoes at bay.

The park was the place to be for people of all ages, especially in the transition from summer to fall. There were paddleboats for those who wanted to go out on the lake, a paved trail around it for those who pre-ferred to stay on land and a gazebo for wed-dings and events. In the evening, bands would come to play old love songs.

“Mind if I join you?” The Crush’s voice interrupted. She looked up to see his radi-ant smile fixed on her, something that never failed to turn her mind to mush.

After swooning over ice-cream stand owner Rich all summer, Ellie is sure it will come to nothing…until one fateful cone changes everything

The sweetest love of all

Ellie nodded, taking a bite of her ice cream to cool her nerves.

“I’m Rich.” She smiled, gesturing to the milk-shake in his hand. “You won’t be

if you keep eating your profits.” He looked confused, then

understanding dawned as he chuckled at her joke.

The sound lit a part of Ellie that had been dark for a

long time. “Funny.” He pointed at her

with his shake. “I knew I liked you.” Ellie knew what she was feeling wasn’t

just “like,” so she let him continue.“My name is Rich. I am not actually

rich, unfortunately.” He jiggled his cup.

“Eating into those profits, as you noticed.” He stood, having stayed a couple of min-utes. “You come here a lot, don’t you…?” A searching look crossed his face.

“Ellie,” she answered. He nodded as though he had already known her name.

“Well, Ellie, can you come back here Friday night? It’s my last day at the stand, and I may have some special ice cream for one lucky—and beautiful—customer.”

Ellie blushed as she nodded her assent. The week passed in a hurry and suddenly, there she was, walking toward the stand. It was busy, but to her surprise, there was no Rich in sight. Disappointment flared but then dissipated when he came around the corner, a cooler in hand and a smile on his face. Ellie’s heart jumped at the sight of it.

He led them to a table a short distance away, yet close enough that they could still hear the band in the gazebo. He opened the cooler, pulling out containers. He handed her one: two scoops of vanilla with sprin-kles. “I saw you eyeing a little girl’s sprinkle cone the other day and thought you might like one. If not, I have a bowl without.”

She melted before the ice cream could, her belly doing a little shimmy at his thoughtfulness. She took a spoonful. “Mmm,” she closed her eyes for a moment, opening them to find him watching her.

Rich touched the corner of his mouth and held out a napkin. “It’s a good sign when you get it on your face.”

Ellie laughed and took another bite of ice cream, not sure how to respond. Guys liked to talk about themselves, right? And Rich did, though he asked questions in return. She learned he owned the ice-cream stand, and she told him about her clothing bou-tique. After a time, they sat quietly, their bowls empty as they listened to the music.

“I think we ate into your profits again,” Ellie said as the music ended.

“It was worth every penny,” Rich said.Joy settled deep inside Ellie, making her

feel like they were the only ones there, like the music had been meant for them alone.

“I don’t want this night to end,” Rich admitted, his voice low in honor of the serenity around them.

Take a chance, Ellie. “Neither do I.” “Can we do this again? With something

a little more substantial than ice cream?” Rich placed his palm up on the table.

“I’d like that.” Ellie put her hand in his, her ice-cream crush definitely a chance worth taking. —Marcella Robinson

Mystery solution

Judy stole the cash. She had tripped up in her statement to Mallory. If she knew that Professor Brooks’ assistant had stayed late, then she was lying about going to bed early. She also knew that the money was in a drawer, a fact that Mallory had not disclosed to anyone. Upon further questioning, Judy cracked and admit-ted that she had taken the money with the hope of winning at the casino and replacing it before being caught.

Good things!Good things!

The minute Max spotted Ed his tail started wagging. “You’re a friendly little guy,” Ed smiled, and outside, when Ed tossed Max’s ball, he dashed after it and dropped it at Ed’s feet.

“I think I just found a new best friend,” Ed told Stacie.

“It looks like they’ve been together for years,” Stacie told her staff as Ed and Max crossed the parking lot.

A week later, Stacie and some of her staff made a rare home visit. They marveled at how Max never left Ed’s side.

“We’re a lucky pair of rescues,” Ed grinned.

Stacie smiled. “Max is lucky to have found you,” she said. “When they say good things come to those who wait, they must mean dogs too.”

We’ve let you down, Max, but that’s going to change,”

Susquehanna SPCA Executive Director Stacie Haynes promised the 5-year-old pit-terrier mix.

Max was the best-behaved rescue at the Cooperstown, New York, shelter. He never barked or growled at the other dogs. He loved his walks and cuddle time with volunteers. And he greeted every potential adopter with a wagging tail. Yet, after 444 days, he was still waiting for his fur-ever family. When a new staffer commented in surprise about his lengthy stay, Stacie’s heart flooded with sadness and guilt.

“We have to do something,” she told her staff.

“Let’s dress him up—that always gets attention,” one volunteer suggested.

That’s when the idea struck. Her first job out of grad school, Stacie had worked with dis-abled adults. New employees had to spend their first day confined to a wheelchair or blindfolded with a white cane to broaden their perspectives.

“What if Max and I switched places for a day,” she proposed. “I’ll sit in his crate, and he can

sit in my office and be acting director.”

On the day of the turnabout, Stacie led Max, dressed in a busi-ness tie, into her office, where he happily settled in, ready to get to work accepting treats and belly rubs. And he got many.

Potential adopters laughed seeing Stacie in the kennel and had to pop in to see Max on the job. But at the end of the day, Max was still a shel-ter resident. Stacie flooded with disappointment. “We’ll think of something else,” she told Max. But as it turned out, there was no need to.

When the TV news aired a story about the swap, it not only caught Moravia, New York, 72-year-old Ed Panus’ attention, Max instantly captured his heart.

“He looks just like Buddy,” Ed marveled.

Buddy was Ed’s beloved American Bully. The two had been inseparable until the day Buddy had died a year earlier. There was still a huge hole in Ed’s heart—plenty of room for a new best buddy, he decided, and called the shelter.
