    TsunamiFrom Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Etymology

The term tsunami  comes from the Japanese津波, composed of the two kanji 津 (tsu) meaning

"harbour " and波 (nami ), meaning "wae"! (For the plural, one can either follow ordinary nglish

practice and add an s, or use an inariable plural as in the Japanese!#$%)

Tsunami are sometimes referred to as tidal waves, which are unusually high sea waes that are

triggered especially by earth&uakes!#'% n recent years, this term has fallen out of faor, especially

in the scientific community, because tsunami actually hae nothing to do withtides! The once

popular term deries from their most common appearance, which is that of an e*traordinarily

high tidal bore! Tsunami and tides both produce waes of water that moe inland, but in the case

of tsunami the inland moement of water may be much greater, giing the impression of an

incredibly high tide! +lthough the meanings of "tidal" include "resembling" #% or "haing the form or

character of"#-.%the tides, and the term tsunami  is no more accurate because tsunami are not

limited to harbours, use of the term tidal wave is discouraged by geologists and oceanographers!

    The Cause of a Tsunami

Tsunamis can occur if there is a disorder that causes the displacement of a large amount ofwater, such as olcanic eruptions, earth&uakes, landslides or meteorite that fell to arth!/oweer, .0 is due to the earth&uaketsunami underwater! n some historical footage oftsunami caused by olcanic eruptions, such as the eruption of 1ount 2rakatoa!3ertical moement in the arth4s crust, can lead to the seafloor up or down suddenly, resulting in disruption of water balance are in it! This resulted in the energy flow of sea water, which when arriing at the beach into a large wae resulting tsunami!

Tsunami wae speed depends on the depth of the sea where the waes occurs, where thespeed can reach hundreds of kilometers per hour! When the tsunami reaches the coast, thespeed will be appro*imately 5. km 6 h and energy ery damaging coastal path! n the middleof the ocean tsunami wae height is only a few centimeters to a few meters, but when itreaches shore wae height can reach tens of meters for water buildup period! Whenreaching the coast inland tsunami will crawl away from the coastline with a range of a fewhundred meters to seeral kilometers een! This ertical moement can occur on the earth fault or fault! The earth&uake also occurred insubduction 7ones, where oceanic plates infiltrates under the continental plate!8andslides on the seabed and olcanic debris can also lead to disruption of sea water thatcan generate tsunamis! The earth&uake that caused the moement perpendicular to thelayer of earth! 9onse&uently, heaing sea floor abruptly so that the balance of sea wateraboe it disturbed! :imilarly, cosmic or meteor that fell from aboe! f the si7e of the meteoror landslide is big enough, it can happen megatsunami that reaches hundreds of meters!
