Reading is an important way to get more information in the world. By

reading, many people can get many knowledge to share with other people. There

are many students who get some difficulties in understanding the text. Thus, it

means that the English teacher should use an interesting way of teaching that can

make the students more active in the classroom. Small Group Discussion is one of

technique that can be used by the teacher in teaching to make students more active

in classroom.

The purpose of the problem is to find out the significant difference

between the reading comprehension of recount text of the tenth grade students of

SMAN 1 Karanganyar Demak in academic year 2017/2018 before and after taught

by using Small Group Discussion.

The design of this research is experimental research by giving pre-test and

post-test. The sample is X IPS-1 of SMAN 1 Karanganyar Demak that consist of

40 students. The research instrument is a test that consists of 20 questions of

multiple choice. To analyze the data the writer use Mean (average), Standard

Deviation, and hypothesis testing using t-test.

The outcome proved that the mean of pre-test is 58.91 and the standard

deviation (SD) is 8.52. It can be classified as “Average”. While the mean of post-

test is 81.47 and the standard deviation (SD) is 4.89. it can be classified as

“High”. For hypothesis testing gets to =17.67 and tt = 2.042, and the level of

significant is 0.05. the writer concludes that the null hypothesis (Ho) is rejected

and Ha (alternative hypothesis) is confirmed, because t(obtained) falls in the

critical region. And, there is a significant difference between the reading

comprehension of recount text of the tenth grade students of SMAN 1

Karanganyar Demak in academic year 2017/2018 before and after being taught by

using small group discussion. So, it is a best technique that effective to develop

the students reading comprehension of recount text of the tenth grade students of

SMAN 1 Karanganyar Demak

Based in the result above, the writer suggested that the teacher can use

Small Group Discussion as a technique to teach reading to the students, because it

can make the students interested in teaching learning process.

Membaca merupakan suatu cara yang sangat penting untuk mendapatkan

banyak informasi di dunia, Dengan membaca, semua orang dapat memperoleh

pengetahuan untuk berbagi kepada orang lain. Ada banyak siswa yang mengalami

kesulitan dalam memahami sebuah teks. Jadi, itu berarti bahwa guru bahasa

Inggris harus menggunakan cara mengajar yang menarik sehingga siswa dapat

membuat kelas lebih aktif. Kerja kelompok merupakan salah satu teknik yang bisa

digunakan oleh guru dalam mengajar untuk membuat siswa lebih aktif di kelas.

.Rumusan masalah dalam penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan apakah

terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan antara kepemahaman membaca terhadap

recount teks pada kelas X SMAN 1 Karanganyar Demak Tahun Ajaran

2017/2018 sebelum dan sesudah diajarkan dengan menggunakan diskusi

kelompok kecil.

Model penelitian ini adalah penelitian eksperimen dengan memberikan pre-

test dan post-test pada satu kelas. Sampel pada penelitian ini adalah kelas X IPS-1

dengan jumlah siswa 40. Instrumen penelitian menggunakan test dengan jumlah

soal 20 yang terdiri dari pilihan ganda. Untuk menganalisa data menggunakan

Mean (Rata-rata), Simpangan pokok,dan uji hipotesis menggunakan t-test.

Hasil dari penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa rata-rata dari pre-test adalah

58.91 dan simpangan pokok 8.52. Hal tersebut dapat diklasifikasikan sebagai

“seimbang” sedangkan rata-rata dari post-test adalah 81.47 dan simpangan pokok

4.89. hal tersebut diklasifikasikan sebagai “tinggi”. Untuk uji hipotesis

memperoleh t(obtained) 17.67 dan t-table= 2.042 dan tingkat signifikan 0.05.

penulis menyimpulkan bahwa null hipotesis (Ho) ditolak dan alternative hipotesis

(Ha) diterima, karena t(obtained) jatuh pada critical region. Dan terdapat

perbedaan yang signifikan antara kepemahaman membaca terhadap recount teks

pada kelas X SMAN 1 Karanganyar Demak tahun ajaran 2017/2018 sebelum dan

sesudah diajarkan dengan menggunakan diskusi kelompok kecil. Jadi ini adalah

teknik yang efektif untuk mengembangkan kepemahaman membaca siswa.

Berdasarkan hasil diatas, penulis berpendapat bahwa guru bisa

menggunakan tehnik diskusi kelompok kecil untuk mengajar membaca pada

siswa, karena dapat membuat siswa tertarik pada pembelajaran.
