Just like that, Alpha Q securedtself a playoff birth with a 45-14

win over 3rd and Long, a teamthat beat Alpha Q by 19 pointswhen the two teams squared off early this season.

Its not about how you start,quarterback Connor Hughes said.Its about how you finish. This

team, we have heart that notmany others have. We knew thisgame was win and in. If we won,we were in the playoffs, and if weost we were going home. Every-one on this team came to play,everyone on this team wantedthis game, and weve got our-selves a playoff game in twoweeks because of it.

It was the most completegame we have played all season,Coach Bill Hill said. Our defensewas the difference. Ryan Deveny,four bat-downs, played possessed.The secondary coverage was ex-cellent, and our offense was un-stoppable. We knew what wewanted to do going into this

game, and we dictated that fromthe first snap.From the first snap is right.

Alpha Q started off the gamewith a 29-yard-run by Matt Mas-succi, setting up a touchdownpass from Hughes to offensiveMVP Corinne Pawlowski.Pawlowski has been a force allseason and a playmaker everymoment she is on the field.

This was our best game. Ourdefense was incredible and of-fense unstoppable, Pawlowskisaid.

However, the two biggest playson offense came on back-to-backseries. After Alpha Q scored onts following possession to go up

by 13 points with 50 seconds left,the 3rd and Long quarterbackbroke free on a run and scored.After a successful extra point at-tempt, Alpha Qs comfortableead, became one in jeopardy of

disappearing, until Matt Massuc-ci made the best catch of the sea-son.

Alpha Q took over with 44 sec-onds left and on its own 20 yardine. Hughes rolled out to the left

and lofted a ball 50 yards downthe field to Massucci, who was intriple coverage. However, threepeople could not stop Massuccifrom coming down with it, as heout-leaped all three to pull downthe best catch of the season andset up what turned out to be aBrieanne Galvin touchdown re-ception with seconds seconds left.

Luck, Massucci said. I cameback to it when it was in the airand timed it right. The other teamwent up way too early. I was ableto leap up and catch the ball asthe three of them were comingdown from their jump.

Alpha Q entered the half withts largest lead of the season at 13

points; however 3rd and Longwould have the ball to start thehalf.

Thats when Deveny took over.Deveny, who has been limited inaction due to injuries, had the

best game of his career. On thefollowing possession after incom-pletions on both first and seconddown by 3rd and Longs quarter-back, Deveny rushed the quarter-back and batted the ball rightback into his face on back-to-backplays, turning the ball over andgiving Alpha Q a chance to add to

its lead.Alpha Q wasted no time in

adding to the score. On the firstplay of the series, a wide receiverreverse pass was called and Con-ner Doud bombed a deep passover the middle to Dan Holmes,but the pass was tipped andknocked over Holmes head. How-ever, Pawlowski was waitingthere for it, catching the pass off the deflection and running 30

yards for her second touchdownof the day.

Little bit of luck, Pawlowskisaid.

Feeling good about themselves,Alpha Q was ready to celebratewhat appeared to be a win, how-ever 3rd and Long was not readyto lie down yet. On the first play

from scrimmage, a quick passwas called, resulting in a 56-yardcatch, a run by one of the re-ceivers for 3rd and Long and justlike that it was a two-possessiongame again.

After a long run by Doud on ascreenplay, Alpha Q was set upwith third and goal. On the fiveyard line, a touchdown would putthem up by three scores with justunder four minutes to play, secure

themselves a victory and a playoff birth. Thats when one playermade a statement and backed itup like no other. Steph Renna, thestarting cornerback and substi-

For everything we have gonethrough in this season, all theosses, everything; to end it this

way, in this fashion, against ateam who kicked our butts thefirst time we played them, its per-fect, Hughes said. We neededthis one and we went out thereand got it. Everyone played their

Doesnt anyone knowwhat a speed limit is?Dear drivers on McKendimen

Road in Shamong and Medford:Please slow down. The speed

limit is 25 mph, but since wehave little or no police surveil-lance, and McKendimen Road istemptingly wide, motorists aretypically speeding here at 50 to60 mph.

The problem is, since it is sowide and inviting, its a popularroad on which Shamong folkwalk pets and fitness jog andwalk, for children on bikes,skates, skateboards and justplaying.

I cringe when I see childrenenjoying their summertime playand up comes a zooming andswerving SUV with a textingdriver. Or a rattling landscapingor lifted 4x4 truck, flying next-day delivery vehicles orteenagers speeding in their mus-cle and sport cars while distract-ed by myriad temptations.

Summer is here, so its espe-cially important that we take itupon ourselves to do the rightthing. We shouldnt have to bethreatened with State Policepresence, not to mention thetroopers have other, more impor-tant things to do on tight budgetsthan chasing down speeders.McKendimen Road driversplease just slow down or take an-other route.

We take our lives in our hands just to go to our mailboxes.Which brings up another topic.

There have been several in-stances of mailbox damage andpilferage that I know of on McK-endimen Road, but I have seenno published police reportsabout it. With people strugglingfor financial survival, we reallycant afford to keep replacingour expensive mailboxes.

Parents, this is on you. We can

be pretty sure this is somethingperpetuated by kids. With this inmind, mailbox bashing andstealing mail can no longer bewritten off as bored countrykids with nothing to do.

In this age of identity theft, itis serious business to loot ordamage mail. I will presscharges if someone is caught.Our mail has been found severaltimes scattered and ripped onthe street, and I also have seen ithappen to my neighbors. I cringewhen I think of what personalmail hasnt been found. That oldchestnut about poor, bored kidswont do it for me. Just make

your kids stop.As summertime driving

Sometimes, politicians get it right.

The state Senate Democrats announced last week that ameasure to allow advertising onDepartment of Transportationvehicles had passed a commit-tee and was headed to the fullSenate. Now, so long as it does-nt get buried there, and eventu-ally makes its way to Gov.Christies desk, and he signs it,this is a good thing.

The measure, sponsored by Sens. Donald Norcross and JimBeach, means that, indeed, if you call for help on the highway,something resembling a pizza delivery car could pull up to as-sist. Thats fine. Who cares?

First, it could be a real pizza delivery car, in which case,maybe the driver has an extra pie and is willing to share. Sec-ond, its probably one of the states emergency response vehi-cles that just looks like a pizza delivery guys car due to the pri-vate advertising on the outside.

That private advertising is replacing your tax dollars.Its a winning situation all the way around. You get help. You

save tax dollars. The state is able to deliver the service. The pri-vate company gets an advertisement.

According to the Dems, if the bill is signed, we become theeighth state to enact the program.

Is there anybody still out there who thinks that taxes in NewJersey are not too high? Who thinks that government shouldntbe turning over every rock to find ways to reduce the tax bur-den? Who wants things to stay the way they are?

Probably not. Finding ways that allow government and pri-vate business to work together to help the taxpayer should beJob No. 1.

And this measure is one way to get the job done.

Burlington County Freehold-ers adopted a $216.9 million budg-et for the year 2011 that reducesthe amount of tax dollars neededto run county government by $5.9million, making this the fourthconsecutive year that the tax levyhas been cut.

The budget reduces spendingby $4.3 million, and also lowersthe county property tax rate from30.99 cents per $100 of equalizedvaluations to 30.96. This marksthe 21st year in a row the rate hasbeen reduced.

Freeholder Bruce Garganionoted that the multi-million dol-ar reductions in taxes and spend-ng translates into a per person

spending level of $483.45 theowest among all 21 New Jersey

counties.The reductions come at a time

when our taxpayers need itmost, Garganio said. As we areall aware, many residents are still

struggling to pay their mortgageor rent, and find employment thatenables them to meet their otherdaily expenses.

Weve made significant cuts inmore than a dozen county depart-ments, but our core programs andservices remain intact, he

added.The final budget vote was 4-0,

with one abstention.When added together, tax cuts

executed since 2007 total $8.5 mil-lion. Spending has been reduced atotal $9.6 million over the sameperiod.

As to the tax rate, under thestates equalized ratio formula,this will result in decreases of varying amounts in the localrates for 34 of the countys 40 mu-nicipalities.

The formula determines, on atown-by-town basis, the assessedvalue of property against actualmarket value.

Garganio noted that the budgetreductions were accomplished de-spite a loss of nearly $1.9 billionin property tax ratables, whichnow total $50 billion.

That left us with a $5.8 millionrevenue shortfall right from thebeginning, Garganio said. But

we were able to find the reduc-tions to overcome it.

Garganio said he viewed thebudget as the culmination of three years of implementingeconomies of scale in govern-ment operation, noting that morethan 300 staff positions have beeneliminated since January 2008,and 165 vehicles from a countyfleet of more than 650 have beentaken out of service.
