Indian Mills ElementarySchool is about to enter its secondyear of full-day kindergarten.

In Principal Nicole Moorespast 11 years, she has seenachievement, but last yearreached new heights from herfull-day kindergarteners, who ex-ceeded academically and sociallyfar beyond any other class withwhich she has worked.

The teachers had the opportu-nity to make sure the studentswere academically ready for firstgrade because it was a full-dayprogram, Moore said.

The kindergarteners are trulyintegrated in the school; theyhave recess, lunch, Spanish, art,music and P.E., according toMoore. There is no longer a sepa-rate kindergarten school bus.

There are smaller numbers ofenrollment this year, but the dis-trict has maintained the sameamount of staffing, Moore said.

The average class size last year

was 21 to 23 students. This year,the average class is fewer than 20.There are no assistant teachers inthe classroom.

Its a bonus to the students.There is so much more that youcan do with the students whenthere is a smaller class size,Moore said.

pher, just completed the full-daykindergarten at Indian Mills Ele-mentary School.

Webbs two older children at-tended the half-day program, andshe said she can see a differencein Christophers reading abilitythrough the time that was spentin the classroom, attributing it tothe full-day kindergarten.

Christopher did great throughthe full-day program, Webb said.

Socially and emotionally,Christopher felt more a part ofthe school because of the specials

that were offered, according toWebb.

The teachers are reallystrong, dedicated and talented,"she said.

Im excited to come back,said Pam Girgenti, kindergartenteacher with Indian Mills Ele-mentary School.

Girgenti is excited to see howthe second year will turn out.

There was tremendous growthwhen comparing the half-day pro-gram to the full-day program, shesaid. There was a significantchange to the kindergartenerssocial and academic skills, andGirgenti attributes this to thekindergarteners access to spe-cials.

They did so much more thanthey did in the half-day program,Girgenti said. I really got toknow my kindergarteners.

The kindergarteners are re-quired to be reading at level fouron the Developmental ReadingAssessment, according to Girgen-

ti. The DRA is an individually ad-ministered assessment of achilds reading capabilities. Mostof the kindergarteners at IndianMills Elementary School exceed-ed the required reading level.

The Shamong Township School Districthas been awarded multiple grants from theShamong Foundation for Educational Ex-cellence.

The foundation is a non-profit organiza-tion that collects, houses and distributesfunds from the private sector. Its mission isto award grants for innovative and creativeprojects that will benefit the ShamongSchool District that would not be otherwisefunded from any other source.

The foundation recently approved 11grants, totaling $87,000, according to NancyThomas, chairperson of the foundation.

Linda Cleveland, a sixth-grade socialstudies teacher, received a grant that willenable her students to have chrome books

that will now enhance her students withinternet access to Discover.com, cameras,video, still pictures and research for pri-mary and secondary sources.

Clevelands class will be developingtheir own website over the course of twoyears.

My students will be looking at prob-lems of other civilizations in Greece,Rome, China, Japan, up to and includingthe Middle Ages. They will be making sim-ilar connections to our world today, Cleve-land said.

Teachers go out of their way to apply.

They go above and beyond to impact theirstudents. They are to be commended forthe work and what they are doing. Theyare not just doing the everyday lessons,Principal Timothy Carroll said. I am ex-cited for my music teacher to use the

iPADs in her music classroom. Technologylends itself to the arts, and to her alreadystrong program.

Sixth-grade students will be learninghow to plant a garden.

Carroll is very excited to see the commu-nity garden, something the school hasnever had before. The garden will be locat-ed behind the maintenance shop near theback of the school.

We are so appreciative and excitedabout the approved grants from the Sha-mong Foundation for Educational Excel-lence, said Melissa Ciliberti, the school

board president.Staff members who applied for the

grants really deserve all of the credit fortheir great project ideas, she said.

Little by little, the effects of

health-care reform, or Oba-

macare as its commonly

known, are starting to come to light.

Change in price and type of health in-

surance, and the availability of public

health insurance, will take shape in

the coming months.In July, the Obama administration

made a change to one aspect of health-

care reform that they said would help

make them a friend to American busi-

ness: They delayed the employer

mandate provision by one year, to

2015.

The provision has been controver-

sial since it was announced, because itrequires businesses with 50 or more

full-time employees to provide health

insurance.

The Obama administration pro-

claimed that the delay would give busi-nesses relief they needed as they are

still attempting to get back up to full

speed.

But will it work? We doubt it will.

Take a look at Middletown, N.J., a

Monmouth-County township of ap-

proximately 66,552 residents as of the

2010 Census. Just last week, the town-

ship cut hours for part-time employeesto avoid having to offer them health in-

surance. The move saves the township

an estimated $775,000 per year.

Its a great move for the township,

but not so great for the employees,

who now get fewer hours and no

health insurance through their em-

ployer and possibly also the resi-

dents, who now may have to face a cut

in services.

Middletown made the move now,

even though the employer mandatewas pushed back to 2015.

Similar cost-saving tactics could be

used in our town, and the question

would be: How would that affect our

services, and possibly our neighbors

own wallets?

That is unknown as of yet, but its a

reality we may have to face not only on

the public employment level, but alsoon the private employment level, as

businesses make similar cost-cutting

measures.

It just makes no sense to us.

Applications are reviewed by asubcommittee or peer reviewcommittee that is made up of two

staff members, two teachers fromeach school, one administratorfrom the district and two to threefoundation trustees, according toThomas.

The peer review committeemake recommendations to theShamong Foundation for Educa-tional Excellence for approval orrejection. The foundation is notobligated to take the advice of thepeer review committee, but theyalmost always do, Thomas said.

Beat the Winter Blues, a verysuccessful fundraiser for the Sha-mong Foundation for EducationalExcellence in the past, is a dance

and auction that will be heldagain this upcoming year,Thomas said.

According to Thomas, there isa payroll deduction campaign

where the school staff con-tributes. The Shamong Founda-tion for Educational Excellencehas a holiday staff tribute andend-of-year staff tribute, wherefamilies make donations in honorof a staff member.

To apply for a grant, theapplication has to be submitted,and the board of educationhas to accept the funds, Thomassaid.

How fortunate we are to havethe dedicated and creative staffmember who are willing to gothrough the application process,Thomas said.

Shelter announcesadoption program

The Burlington County Free-holders have announced theBurlington County Animal Shel-ters Happy Tails adopt-a-pet

program.This program will feature a

sheltered animal each month atthe county corner store in theMoorestown Mall. The programwill kick-off on Aug. 30, from12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. and run onthe last Friday of each month.

The shelter provides spayed orneutered animals for adoption inhopes of controlling the countys

animal population.The county animal shelter is

located on Academy Drive off ofWoodlane Road, behind theBurlington County Library inWestampton Township. Hours ofoperation are noon to 7 p.m. onMondays and Thursdays; noon to4 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdaysand Fridays, and noon to 4 p.m. onSaturdays. The shelter is closedon Sundays and holidays.

Church Road bridgeconstruction begins

Construction work for the re-habilitation of County BridgeD4.47 located on Church Road(CrR 616) over Little Creek at theborder between Medford andSouthampton Townships wasscheduled to begin Friday, Aug.16. The road will be closed as of

Friday and remain closed untilthe projected is completed.

The project is estimated totake about four months, withcompletion scheduled for Decem-ber, Freeholder Director JosephB. Donnelly announced.
