Pembaca yang berbahagia,

Tahun 2018 merupakan momen penting perusahaan karena memasuki usia setengah abad. Perjalanan waktu tersebut sekaligus momentum pembuktian perusahaan terhadap tujuan-tujuan bersama, yakni terus memper-baiki sekaligus meningkatkan kinerja perusahaan.

Edisi Halo Vale kali ini mengemas perjalanan perusahaan selama 50 tahun tersebut. Mulai dari momen-momen nostalgia awal-awal perusahaan dirintis hingga wajah perusahaan memasuki abad milenial. Termasuk merekam sederet peristiwa yang berlangsung selama acara selebrasi HUT ke-50 yang bertajuk “Our Golden Journey” yang digelar di Sorowako, pada 28 Juli silam.

Dengan bangga kami juga memperkaya edisi kali ini dengan artikel-artikel yang berisi wawancara khusus dengan para perintis perusahaan yang memiliki peran krusial di awal perusahaan berjalan. Year 2018 is an important moment for our company as we reach the age of half a century. At the same time, it was a momentum for us to proof our shared goals: to continue to improve and make the most of the company’s performance.

This Halo Vale edition packs the company’s 50-year journey. Starting from nostalgic moments when PT Vale was pioneered to the face of the company enter-ing millennial century. We also recorded a series of events that took place during the celebration of our 50th anniversary entitled “Our Golden Journey”.

In addition, we also enrich this edition with articles containing special interviews with company pioneers who have crucial roles in PT Vale’s early years: Rumen-gan Musu, Ahmad Waheed and Henry Harju. The Company’s Pictures of EventsThere are many events that have been organized at the Company that Halo Vale can publish. Since the frequency of the publication of this magazine is quite infrequent, surely there are many events that can published in one publication. I suggest, Halo Vale provi-des a special section for this.

Thank you for the input. We think exactly like you. So, starting this edition we have a new rubric called "Gallery of Events" which will accommodate most of the events that have been held at the Company.

Campaign Material in the MagazineAlthough it is an internal magazine, I think Halo Vale should pro-vide more portion of the company's campaign materials. Because there are a lot of such materials which I think important to know by PT Vale’s employees and contractors’ workers. For example about working safely, the vision and mission & value of the com-pany or other things related to the new policy.

So far we have presented an internal campaign material as an insert in the form of a single poster on the pages of the magazine. Of course we will add the portion if there is a crucial or interesting theme.

Bonus or GimmickHalo Vale as I recall never gave a bonus in its each edition. Prizes are only for the senders of Letters from the Readers or the win-ners of a Quiz. I suggest each edition of magazine comes with a souvenir; I’m sure this will be very interesting.

Since the last four editions we have indeed reduced the gimmicks or bonuses in each issue of the magazine. This is in line with the spirit of the company’s cost reduction policy. We also reduce the quantity of print magazines to increase the efficiency in its management.

Bonus atau Gimmick Halo Vale seingat saya enggak pernah memberikan bonus di tiap edisinya. Hadiah hanya bagi pengirim "Surat Pembaca" atau pemenang "Kuis". Tahun 2018, PT Vale genap berusia 50 tahun. Sebuah tonggak penting sekaligus momentum untuk menegaskan komitmen perusahaan terhadap tujuan-tujuan bersama, yaitu terus meningkatkan kinerja kesehatan dan keselamatan, memberikan hasil-hasil terbaik kepada pemegang saham, ber-kontribusi menjaga kelestarian Bumi, serta menja-lankan bisnis yang beretika dan berpedoman pada standar-standar terdepan.

Sebagai bentuk apresiasi kepada stakeholder, terutama karyawan dan masyarakat, PT Vale meng-gelar event perayaan HUT ke-50 yang bertajuk “Our Golden Journey” dengan acara puncak di Camp Site, Sorowako, sehari penuh pada 28 Juli 2018.

Acara dimulai sejak pagi dengan senam bersama dan jalan sehat yang dilepas serta diikuti jajaran di-reksi PT Vale. Sepanjang hari di akhir pekan itu, ber-bagai games diadakan. Ada lomba egrang, gasing, lempar dart, lempar kaleng, lomba mewarnai dan menggambar untuk anak usia sekolah, lomba dero,

Dalam ajang itu juga diadakan pameran foto yang menya-jikan dokumentasi Perusahaan sejak tahun-tahun awal berdiri hingga peristiwa terkini. Sebagai puncak perayaan, direksi PT Vale melakukan seremoni potong tumpeng. Presiden Direktur Nico Kanter menyerahkan potongan pertama kepada Ru-mengan Musu, salah seorang pionir—selain Waheed Ahmad, Henry Harju, dan Soffie Wahju (istri dari Alm. Beni Wahju)—yang khusus diundang dalam rangka ulang tahun emas PT Vale. Di malam hari, deretan artis ibukota menyemarakkan panggung lewat konser musik.

“Kita harus bersyukur atas berkat yang dilimpahkan Yang Maha Kuasa sehingga kita masih bertahan hingga hari ini. Semoga untuk seterusnya, kita bisa terus memberikan dampak dan kontribusi positif bagi seluruh pemangku kepen-tingan kita,” kata Nico Kanter.

Sejarah PT Vale di Indonesia berawal dari pendirian Per-usahaan pada 25 Juli 1968. Operasi dimulai dengan pe-nandatanganan Kontrak Karya antara Perusahaan dengan Pemerintah Indonesia untuk mengeksplorasi, menambang, dan mengolah bijih nikel. Pembangunan fasilitas pengolahan di Sorowako dilakukan pada 1973 dan produksi komersial dimulai pada 1978. Dengan produksi rata-rata 78.000 metrik ton per tahun, kita menyumbang 5% pasokan nikel dunia.[

their families at PT Vale’s 50-years anniversary ceremony.

In 2018, PT Vale turns 50 years old. This is an important milestone as well as momentum to emphasize the company's commitment to the collective goals, namely to continuously improve the occupational safety and health performance, pro-vide the optimum benefits to the shareholders, contribute in maintaining the preservation of the Earth, and conduct ethical business practices based on the leading standards.

As a form of appreciation to the stakeholders, especially the employees and the community, PT Vale held a 50th anniver-sary celebration entitled "Our Golden Journey" with the peak event held at the Camp Site, Sorowako, full day on July 28, 2018.

The event began in the morning with mass gymnastic perfor-mance and health walk inaugurated and participated in by PT Vale's board of directors. Throughout the day at the weekend, various fun games were also organized. There were competi-tions of stilts, tops, throwing darts, cans throwing, coloring and drawing for school-age children, dero game, lantern festivals, and singing contest for the theme song "Proud to be Vale".

A photo exhibition was also part of the event by display-ing the Company’s documentation from the early years of establishment up to the latest events. As the culmination of the celebration, PT Vale's directors conducted a ceremonial cutting rice cone. President Director Nico Kanter then handed

over the first piece of the rice cone to Rumengan Musu, one of the pioneers — in addition to Waheed Ahmad, Henry Harju, and Soffie Wahju (the wife of late Beni Wahju) — who were specially invited to attend the celebration of PT Vale's golden anniversary. At night, a row of artists from the capital city enlivened the stage in a music concert.

"We must be grateful for the blessings bestowed by the Almighty God so that we still survive today. Hopefully in the future, we can continue to make an impact and positive con-tribution to all our stakeholders," said Nico Kanter.

PT Vale's history in Indonesia began with the founding of the Company on July 25, 1968. The operation started with the signing of a Contract of Work between the Company and the Government of Indonesia to explore, mine and process the nickel ores. The construction of a processing plant in Sorowa-ko was carried out in 1973 and the commercial production commenced in 1978. With an average production of 78,000 metric tons per year, we contribute 5% of the world's nickel supply.

We must be grateful for the blessings bestowed by the Almighty God so that we still survive today. Hopefully in the future, we can continue to make an impact and positive contribution to all our stakeholders.

Salah satu pionir perusahaan ini dengan jernih dan lancarnya bercerita tentang perjalanan perusahaan dari awal hingga tumbuh maju seperti saat ini. Momen apa saja yang paling berkesan?

Di usia yang sudah di atas 80 tahun, Anda masih tampak bugar. Sepertinya benar kata orang, "the old mining engi-neers never die, they are just fade away."

Pada dasarnya saya ini mengalir saja. Saya ini orang se-derhana. Saya tidak pernah bermimpi menjadi CEO di peru-sahaan ini dulu. Menurut saya pada waktu itu, mungkin saya hanya mencapai posisi superintendent saja. Tetapi sesudah saya di dalam, kemudian menjadi eksekutif, saya dikirim ke University of Western Ontario, Kanada. Setelah saya kembali dari sana, posisi saya jadi mine manajer, dan saya dipro-mosikan menjadi Assistant Vice President. Kemudian saya menjadi Vice President Operation, dan inilah posisi terlama yang saya duduki, yakni dari tahun 1980-1988.

Anda salah satu pionir perusahaan. Tahun 1967 Anda sudah berada di Sorowako, bersama Beni Wahju dan Hitler Singawinata. Anda menjelajah daerah konsesi peru-sahaan di Sulawesi Selatan, tenggara, hingga tengah. Bisa

Anda jelaskan tantangan yang Anda alami waktu itu dan apa yang paling berkesan?

Sebenarnya saya menjelajah daerah nikel di tiga provinsi itu bersama Pak Beni, sedangkan Pak Hitler tidak banyak ikut ke lapangan. Dia lebih banyak “jaga gawang” di Jakarta. Daerah yang kami kunjungi awalnya daerah di Balang dekat Karebbe, dekat Malili. Kemudian di Sorowako. Malah saya sempat tinggal di Kampung Sorowako, tinggal dengan kepala desa di sana, Pak Magani.

Kami melakukan penyelidikan lubang-lubang zaman Belanda. Biasanya, kedalamannya sekitar 15-20 meter. Saya ditunjukkan sama Pak Magani. Dia dulu zaman Belanda jadi mandor di situ. Dia masih ingat daerah yang punya kadar nikel tinggi. Saya tinggal di sana Sorowako selama tiga minggu. Banyak tantangannya. Kami bawa makanan untuk makan siang, tapi tidak ada air. Hanya ada air satu ceret. Maka saya perintahkan hanya satu tangan saja yang dicuci. Tangan saya paling atas, baru Pak Magani, kemudian karyawan saya di bawah. Kami juga membuka jalan. Kami hanya berhenti saat kami mau makan. Kalau dikatakan berkesan, itu tidak ada. Ini repot. Jadi yang berkesan itu mungkin nanti belakangan.

Tahun awal eksplorasi itu, 1967, kami dengar sampel nikel diangkut dengan kerbau atau kuda, bukan menggunakan mobil. Bisa Anda gambarkan kondisi lapangan waktu itu?

Daerah di Sulawesi Selatan itu, kan, dikuasai oleh gerombolan DI/TII. Jadi jalan menuju dari Malili menuju Sorowako sudah tidak ada. Jalan itu sudah menjadi semak kembali. Jadi, satu- satunya jalan untuk mengambil sampel itu dengan kuda. Mobil sama sekali tak ada.

Saat eksplorasi Anda tinggal di mana?

Saat eksplorasi kami buat camp di Karebbe. Itu kira-kira 9 km dari Malili. Kami membuat camp dari kayu dan atap nipah. Kami juga buat semacam pondok di pinggir sungai, di mana kami bertiga—Beni Wahju, orang dari Inco Kanada, dan saya sendiri—suka duduk-duduk. Biasanya ketika mau mandi, kami ke sungai kecil itu. Orang kampung juga suka mandi di sana, maka kami tidak telanjang. Kami pakai celana. Yang kami je-lajahi, Hulubalang, Sorowako, Towuti, dan Larona. Sebenarnya problem terbesar kami adalah saat buang air besar, karena tidak ada tempat khusus.

Anda memimpin perusahaan terbilang cukup lama, dari

1995-2002. Apa yang berkesan selama Anda menjabat Presiden Direktur waktu itu?

Setiap bulan, saat saya sudah menjadi CEO, saya harus me-ngirim laporan ke Kanada. Setiap bulan saya harus mengirim laporan political outlook dan masalah ekonomi. Saya tidak mengerti soal politik. Saya memang mempelajari ekonomi, tetapi saya bukan ekonom. Bos di Kanada membutuhkan informasi guna dia presentasikan kepada Board of Director Limited. Saya pikir ini adalah pekerjaan berat. Dari situ saya membuat jaringan. Saya mencari input dari Pak (Mohammad) Sadli, mantan Menteri Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral yang pada waktu itu adalah komisaris perusahaan, dan Pak (Sutaryo) Sigit yang sudah saya kenal dekat karena saya dulu tinggal di mess Aneka Tambang bersama dia.

Kemudian saya buat jaringan pula dengan anggota DPR yang waktu itu menjadi Gubernur Sumatera Barat. Saya bertanya soal politik. Saya juga ngobrol dengan Duta Besar Kanada. Jadi, sesudah saya membangun jaringan dan mendapatkan semua informasi, saya kirimkan ke bos saya di Kanada.

Waktu saya menjadi Vice President of Operation, jabatan saya yang paling lama, yakni 8 tahun, perusahaan masih rugi. Dari awal operasi tahun 1978 sampai 1986, utangnya 420 juta dollar AS. Maka saya melakukan rasionalisasi. Saya mengu-rangi fasilitas kendaraan, kemudian mengurangi karyawan sebanyak 420 orang. Waktu itu ada gejolak demonstrasi. Pada era kepemimpinan Anda pula berlangsung perpan-jangan Kontrak Karya. Bisa Anda ceritakan persiapan perusahaan waktu itu?

Persiapan kita itu hampir setahun sebelum penandatanganan perpanjangan Kontrak Karya. Perpanjangan itu resminya, kan, ditandatangani pada tanggal 15 Januari 1996. Tapi telah disetujui oleh pemerintah pada tanggal 29 Desember 1995. Tim kita bukan saya yang pimpin. Kita punya tim dari Toronto dan tim dari perusahaan. Pada waktu itu saya belum Presdir. Yang sempat membuat saya khawatir, per 1 Januari 1996 terjadi perubahan pajak. Akhirnya saya berkomunikasi dengan bos saya di Toronto. Syukurlah, perubahan pajak tidak berlaku bagi kita, karena perpanjangan Kontrak Karya telah disetujui tanggal 29 Desember 1995.

Banyak yang menilai kepimpinan Anda khas. Anda dianggap sebagai sosok yang lihai memotivasi dan merekrut orang--orang muda berbakat.

Tentunya, sebagai perusahaan tambang, saya lebih banyak merekrut engineer. Saya nyelonong ke ITB, melakukan lobi ke dosen ITB, terutama ke Jurusan Tambang dan Mesin. Saya tanyakan dulu, yang pintar-pintar mana. Kemudian saya kirim orang-orang ini untuk melakukan psikotes. Saya percaya kepada psikotes, karena sebelumnya orang-orang yang saya dapatkan dari psikotes 80-90% itu bagus. Ada juga yang saya tolak. Dia pintar tapi psikotesnya tidak baik.

Gara-gara itu, saya berdebat saya dengan sang dosen. Saya percaya dengan psikotes 88%. Kemudian saya memiliki

background-nya. Yang saya lihat, biasanya orangtuanya apa, dan lain-lain. Saya lihat ini anak seorang dokter yang kerja di WHO, istrinya seorang direktur perusahaan besar. Saya panggil dia, saya bilang barangkali kamu pintar ya, tapi barangkali hidup di hutan tidak cocok, jadi maaf, kamu tidak saya terima.

Berdasarkan pengalaman itu, setelah direkrut, saya bimbing mereka. Banyak yang saya kirim untuk mengikuti seminar--seminar. Ada insinyur muda baru datang. Saya tanya, kamu biasa minum bir? “Yah, dulu mana ada uang untuk beli bir? Itu, kan, mahal?” jawab dia. Maka saya bilang, itu di Taman Antar--Bangsa banyak orang asing minum-minum bir. Kamu ke sana beli satu bir dan berbicaralah. Bahasa Inggris kamu tidak akan keluar kalau berbicara dengan orang Indonesia yang pintar bahasa Inggris, pasti bicara dengan bahasa Indonesia. Tetapi dengan kamu beli bir dan berbicara dengan orang asing, kamu tidak akan malu. Jadi memotivasi itu ada seninya. Dan bagusnya, pada waktu itu kami seperti keluarga besar.

Saya juga mengajarkan bos saya budaya Indonesia, sampai--sampai saya bertengkar dengan istri bos saya. Gara-garanya, saya menganjurkan agar dia dan istrinya mengorganisir halal bilhalal, bukan hanya Natal. Saya bisa menunjukkan di mana perusahaan yang banyak bulenya juga mengorganisir halal bilhalal, Krakatau Steel. Kebetulan famili istri saya di sana sebagai direksi. Akhirnya ketika saya pulang cuti, anak buah saya bilang, “Pak Musu, akhirnya bos sadar, waktu Bapak cuti dia mengornanisir halal bilhalal.”

Bisnis mineral khususnya nikel sangat dinamis dan fluk-tuatif. Proyeksi Anda ke depan tentang bisnis ini seperti apa?

Saya sebenarnya sudah kurang mengikuti industri nikel. Tapi saya ingat, zaman saya dulu cycle-nya tiap tiga tahun, tapi sekarang sudah tidak jelas.

Sekarang, kebijaksanaan pemerintah juga sudah lain, sudah tidak memakai Kontrak Karya. Sekarang namanya Izin Pertam-bangan atau apa. Selain itu, budaya Vale lain. Waktu saya jadi CEO, untuk setiap kunjungan bos-bos Inco dari Kanada, saya sudah buat appointment dengan menteri, tentunya Menteri Pertambangan atau ESDM, tapi juga yang ada hubungannya, misalnya yang menyangkut lingkungan. At least itu yang saya buat.

He is one of the pioneers of this company who can still clearly recall the company's journey from the beginning to the growing forward as it is today. What are his most memorable moments?

At the age of over 80 years, you still look fit. It seems apply to you the phrase of ‘the old mining engineers never die, they just fade away’.

Basically I just follow the flow. I am a simple person. I never dreamed of being the CEO of this company back then. In my mind at that time, I might just reach up to a superintendent position. But once I was inside, then became an executive, I was sent to the University of Western Ontario, Canada. After I returned from there, my position became mine manager, and I was promoted to Assistant Vice President. Then I became Vice President of Operations, and this was the longest posi-tion I ever held, from 1980 to 1988.

You are one of the pioneers of the company. In 1967 you were already stationed in Sorowako, along with Beni Wahju and Hitler Singawinata. You explored the com-pany's concession areas in South, Southeast, and Central Sulawesi. Can you explain the challenges you encoun-tered along the way and what was the most memorable experiences?

Actually I explored nickel deposit areas in the three provinces with Mr. Beni, while Mr. Hitler did not go much to the field. He was more "running the office" in Jakarta. The initial areas we explored were located in Balang near Karebbe, close to Malili. Then the one in Sorowako. In fact I had lived in Sorowako Vil-lage, living with the village head named Mr. Magani.

We went into pits made during the Dutch colonial era with the depth between 15 and 20 meters. Mr. Magani showed me the pits. He used to be working as a foreman during the Dutch colonial era. He still remembered the spots with high nickel content. I stayed in Sorowako for three weeks and there were so many challenges. We brought food for lunch, but there was no water. There was only one kettle of water. So I had to ask them to wash only one hand. My hand was at the top, then Mr. Magani’s and my employee on the bottom. We also had to open up the pathway. We only stopped when we needed to eat. This is not nice memory of course, only troublesome. So the nice memorable moments might come later on.

In the early year of that exploration, in 1967, we heard that the nickel samples were transported using a buffalo or horse, not a car. Can you describe the field condition at that time?

The area in South Sulawesi was controlled by DI/TII rebellion group. So the road to Malili to Sorowako was gone. The road has become a bush again. So, the only way to take and trans-port the samples was by horse. There was no car at all.

Where do you live during the exploration?

During our exploration we were camping in Karebbe. It's about 9 km from Malili. We made the wall from the wood and the roof from nipah leaves. We also built a kind of hut on the edge of the river, where the three of us — Beni Wahju, a rep-resentative from Inco Canada, and myself — to hang around. Usually when we wanted to take a shower, we went to the creek. The villagers also used to bathe there, so we could not bathe naked. We wore pants. We were exploring Hulubalang, Sorowako, Towuti, and Larona at that time. Actually our big-gest problem was how to answer the nature’s call, because there was no toilet.

You lead the company for quite long, from 1995 to 2002. What is the most memorable moment during your time as President Director in that period?

Every month, when I became the CEO, I had to send a report to Canada. Every month I had to send a report on political outlook and economic issues. I did not understand politics. I did study economics, but I am not an economist. The boss in Canada needed the information to present it to the Limited’s Board of Directors. I thought at that time this is a hard work.

So, I tried to create a network. I was looking for input from Mr. (Mohammad) Sadli, then Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources who at that time was also the commissioner of the company, and Mr. (Sutaryo) Sigit, whom I knew very well because I used to live with him in the Aneka Tambang’s dormi-tory.

Then I developed a relationship with a member of the House of Representatives, who at that time was then elected as the Governor of West Sumatra. I asked him about politics. I also talked with the Ambassador of Canada. So, after I built the network and got all the information, I sent it to my boss in Canada.

Remarkably, what he presented was the exact inputs I sent him, which actually came from other people's brains. So I passed the test here. That is what impressed me the most.

When I became Vice President of Operations, I held the posi-tion for the longest, which was 8 years, the company was still suffering from losses. During your leadership tenure, the Contract of Work expired and should be extended. Can you tell the com-pany's preparation at that time?

Our preparation was almost a year before signing the exten-sion of the Contract of Work. The extension was officially signed on January 15, 1996. But it was approved by the government on December 29, 1995. It was not me who led the team. We have a team from Toronto and a team from the company. At that time I was not President Director yet. What made me worry was that as of January 1, 1996 there was a change on the taxation. I then communicated the matter with my boss in Toronto. Thankfully, the change in the taxation did not apply to us, because the extension of the Contract of Work was approved on December 29, 1995.

Many consider your leadership as typical. You are regarded as a person who is skillful in finding and motivating talented young people.

Of course, for a mining company like this, naturally I recruited more engineers. I went to ITB, lobbied the lecturers, espe-cially at the Department of Mining and Machinery. I ask them which students were the smartest. Then I sent the graduates to sit the psychological tests. I believe in psychological tests, because previously the people I selected after passing the psychological tests 80-90% were good. There was one gradu-ate who I rejected, because although he was smart the results of his psychological tests were not good.

Because of that, I argued with a lecturer. I believe 88% in the psychological tests. Then I also learned his background. Usu-ally I studied the parents of the candidates and other matters. The graduate was a son of a doctor who worked at WHO, while his mother was a director of a big company. I sent for him, I told him ‘you are smart, but I think you are not suitable to live in the mining site. So I am sorry, I cannot hire you’.

Based on that experience, I needed to guide the new recruits. I sent a lot of them to attend seminars. A young engineer just arrived back then. I asked him, ‘do you like drinking beer?’ ‘Well yes, but I did not have enough money to buy a glass of beer before. It’s quite expensive, right?’ he answered. So I encour-aged him to go to Taman Antar-Bangsa where many foreign citizens were drinking beer there. ‘You go there, buy one glass of beer and talk to them. You cannot exercise your English by talking with Indonesian people although they are English proficient, because naturally you all will speak Indonesian. But talking to strangers over a glass of beer, you will be forced to speak in English. So there is an art in motivating. And the good thing is, at that time we were like a big family.

I also taught my boss Indonesian culture, to the point that I had to have an arguing with my boss' wife. The reason is that I recommended him and his wife to also organize halal bihalal, a gathering to celebrate Islamic festivity of Eid-al-Fitr, in addi-tion to Christmas celebration. I showed how big companies with many foreigners also organized such halal bilhalal, like Krakatau Steel. It happened my wife's relative was a director at the company. Eventually when I went to my hometown for the annual leave, my staff told me, "Pak Musu, finally the boss came to his senses and held an event of halal bilhalal while you’re away on vacation."

The business of minerals, especially nickel, is very dynamic and volatile. How do you see the prospect of this business in the future?

I actually am not following the nickel industry development nowadays. But I remember in the past the cycle happened in every three years, but now I’m not sure.

Now, the government’s policies are also different. There is no Contract of Work anymore. Now it's called Mining Permit or something like that. Besides, Vale’s culture is also not the same. When I was the CEO, every time the Inco’s bosses from Canada visited Indonesia, I made an appointment with the minister, at that time was the Minister of Mining, and other dignitaries related to the mining business including the environmental issues. At least that's what I prepared for welcoming them.

Geolog ini bercerita tentang awal--awal proyek eksplorasi di Sorowako pasca penandatanganan Kontrak Karya. Hank, sapaan akrabnya, adalah satu dari sekian geolog perusahaan memetakan ribuan hektar area konsesi dalam waktu yang sempit.

Kapan terakhir kali Anda berkunjung ke Sorowako?

Terakhir kali saya datang 11 tahun yang lalu. Kunjungan itu sangat singkat dan bukan untuk bisnis lagi. Saya sudah pensiun ketika itu. Saya dan istri dapat izin untuk singgah sebentar dan melihat site sebelum kami melanjutkan perjalanan ke Australia, Kaledonia Baru, dan Selandia Baru. Kami sedang merayakan ulang tahun pernikahan ke-40 saat itu. Kami hanya singgah semalam, hanya numpang lewat saja.

Apa pendapat Anda tentang Sorowako masa kini?

Menurut saya luar biasa. Saya kagum dan sangat bangga dengan perkembangan yang terjadi di sini. Perkembangan yang terjadi sejak dulu dan berlanjut hingga hari ini. Rombongan kami baru saja mengikuti rafting di Danau Matano dan saya menyaksikan

wilayah permukiman yang semakin meluas,

perumahan baru, dan saya me-lihat kondisi danau yang tetap jernih.

Saya puas sekali melihat perkembangan Sorowako. Dulu, pertama kali tim kami ke sini, tidak ada

jalan atau apapun. Memang perlu waktu lama untuk berkembang seperti sekarang.

Bisa Anda ceritakan secara singkat karir Anda selama ditu-gaskan di Indonesia ketika itu?

Saya lulus dari Queens University di Kingston, Ontario, pada 1961 sebagai geological engineer. Saya sudah pernah bekerja di Inco sebelumnya, maka ketika saatnya tiba, saya diminta bekerja di sana sebagai geolog. Penugasan pertama saya di Guatemala selama 3 tahun. Saya memasuki hutan-hutan di Guatemala yang sangat mirip dengan apa yang saya lakukan di sini beberapa tahun kemudian.

berencana menikah, sudah bertunangan, tapi Inco menugaskan saya di Australia. Ketika saya bertanya apakah boleh membawa istri ke site yang terpencil, ternyata tidak boleh.

Di sana hanya ada kamp pengeboran untuk pekerja single status. Tidak ada mess untuk wanita. Setelah berdiskusi, saya putuskan untuk tetap berangkat sendiri karena sudah menjadi konsekuensi profesi yang saya tekuni. Saat itu kami berharap masih bisa meneruskan kebersamaan. Enam bulan kemudian, saya me-nyudahi pekerjaan saya di kamp dan memutuskan pulang untuk menikah. Setelah menikah, kami berdua kembali ke Australia. Saya mengerjakan proyek joint venture bersama BHP di Long Hampton, Queensland, sehingga kami menetap di Long Hampton selama hampir 2 tahun. Di Inco kala itu, setiap 2 tahun Anda diberi kesem-patan pulang 1-2 bulan, kemudian ditempatkan di lokasi lain. Kami pulang ketika istri saya hamil.

Suatu hari, Perusahaan memberitahu bahwa penempatan saya selanjutnya adalah di Indonesia jika Kontrak Karya telah ditanda-tangani. Saya berkata, “Bagus. Di Indonesia bagian mana?” Ketika mereka bilang di Sulawesi, saya tidak tahu di mana Sulawesi saat itu. Tapi saya menganggap ini promosi yang bagus bagi karir saya. Apalagi saat itu saya masih muda, masih 29 tahun. Maka di sinilah saya. Di Indonesia.

Saya ada di momen penandatanganan Kontrak Karya, ketika kami mengadakan selebrasi. Usai selebrasi, saya mendapat telegram yang mengabarkan bahwa putra pertama saya, Jeffrey, telah lahir di Kanada. Di hari yang sama, 27 Juli 1968. Semua orang berkata itu pertanda baik bagi proyek ini. Lantas saya pulang sebentar untuk menemui anggota keluarga yang baru lahir namun saya menghabiskan hampir seluruh waktu saya setelah itu di Indonesia.

Pekerjaan apa yang Anda rasakan paling berat ketika itu?

Kami harus menyiapkan banyak hal begitu KK ditandatangani. Kami harus memotret seluruh area seluas 66.000 km2. Wilayah yang sangat luas untuk dijangkau. Maka kami menyewa peru-sahaan KLM untuk melakukan foto udara yang memakan waktu hampir 3 tahun karena mereka tidak bisa terbang setiap hari. Jarang ada bentangan yang cukup sehingga mereka terbang sebentar lalu datang kembali 6 bulan kemudian ketika musim hujan berlalu. Kami juga mempekerjakan kontraktor, perusahaan Inggris Taylor Woodrow International, untuk membangun kamp di suatu tempat yang sentral di dalam wilayah KK dan menyediakan dukungan logistik untuk operasional. Kami sepakat bahwa Malili adalah lokasi sentral meskipun kami belum bisa mencapai target utama yaitu Sorowako, kala itu.

Kami memulai pekerjaan lapangan enam bulan sebelum kamp dibangun. Kami tinggal di gudang kosong berukuran kecil di Malili. Di sanalah kami menghabiskan petang sembari merancang formasi campsite. Kami mendatangkan helikopter sesuai kontrak dan mulai menjangkau serta melakukan eksplorasi di wilayah Teluk Bone, sebelum sampai ke Sorowako. Kami membangun jaringan radio komunikasi di hari-hari pertama karena helikopter memerlukan radio yang stabil, demikian pula kru lapangan yang menghabiskan keseharian di dalam hutan.

Di 5 tahun pertama, Inco diwajibkan melepas minimal 50% wilayah KK. Dalam waktu 7 tahun, kami berhasil melepas 95%. Sebagian wilayah mudah untuk dilepas, tapi sebagian besar harus melewati proses yang sulit. Pekerja lapangan harus bekerja sangat keras saat itu.

Berarti Anda belum sampai ke Sorowako saat itu? Kegiatan operasional masih berpusat di Malili dan sekitar Teluk Bone?

Saya meninggalkan Sulawesi tepat saat kru lapangan berhasil mengambil sampel di Sorowako. Saya kembali ke Kanada untuk bertugas di kantor karena sedang ada dua proyek berjalan: Proyek Guatemala yang sedang dalam tahap studi kelayakan dan proyek Sorowako. Keduanya memerlukan kalkulasi cadangan bijih dan pekerjaan komputerisasi. Di Sulawesi, proyek eksplorasi memasuki fase selanjutnya. Tim sudah menetap di Malili dan eksplorasi dila-kukan di seluruh wilayah konsesi.

Setelah 2 tahun ditugaskan di Sulawesi, saya meniti karir di level manajemen di Toronto hingga akhirnya menduduki jabatan Direksi untuk area Asia Tenggara dan area-area selain Amerika Utara. Saya sangat sibuk ketika itu. Sangat sangat sibuk hingga saya merasa lelah, terutama karena harus melakukan banyak perja-lanan. Anda tentu paham bahwa plesiran di masa itu perlu waktu yang jauh lebih panjang dibanding sekarang. Maka saya pensiun dini setelah 34 tahun berkarya di Inco, pada 1994. Saya pensiun di posisi Director of Exploration Outside North America. Setelah itu, saya melakukan pekerjaan sebagai konsultan, tapi tidak banyak.

Anda sering dapat komplain dari keluarga karena jarang ada di rumah?

Saya bisa katakan istri saya mengurus keluarga dengan baik. Karena saya terlalu sering di luar. Kami punya empat anak. Dua di antaranya sudah kuliah ketika saya pensiun, sehingga tinggal dua anak di rumah. Jadi sebenarnya bukan waktu yang buruk ketika saya memutuskan pensiun.

Adakah kenangan yang paling berkesan bagi Anda ketika

berada di kamp di Malili?

Saat itu Taylor Woodrow sudah menyelesaikan kompleks kamp. Kami punya hunian untuk staf senior dan junior staff dengan single status. Tidak berselang lama sejak kamp berdiri, sepertinya perte-ngahan Desember 1968, terjadi kebakaran. Salah seorang pekerja merokok di atas tempat tidur, saya rasa, dan hal itu memantik kebakaran di hunian staf senior. Rumah luluh-lantak. Sangat me-ngerikan, palagi terjadi di tengah malam. Kami memiliki petugas keamanan dari angkatan bersenjata dan mereka punya perimeter untuk menjaga kompleks kamp. Akhirnya mereka menembak ke segala arah karena tidak tahu apakah api berasal dari kebakaran atau aksi pemberontakan atau kejadian lain.

Saat itu, kami belum punya perangkat pemadam kebakaran. Kami hanya punya trailer tank kecil berisi air. Tentu tidak cukup untuk memadamkan api sehingga semuanya habis terbakar. Untunglah tidak ada yang terluka atau tewas. Hal yang saya ingat adalah semua paspor, dokumen, semuanya hancur. Butuh berbulan-bulan untuk pulih kembali.

Bagaimana dengan kenangan indah?

Wah, itu hari-hari yang menyenangkan. Kami sangat dekat satu sama lain. Tim kami terdiri atas personel dari Australia, Kepulauan Solomon, geolog muda Kanada. Semua punya pengalaman spesifik. Waheed (Ahmad) datang untuk melakukan foto udara. Itu pekerjaan yang sangat berat tapi bisa dia selesaikan. Tim Indonesia bekerja sangat baik. Ada Beni Wahju sebagai Chief Geologist, Hitler Singawinata yang menjabat sebagai Manajer di Kantor Jakarta karena kami punya banyak urusan dengan pemerintah dan urusan logistik yang perlu dilakukan, dan Rumengan Musu yang saat itu menjadi Kepala Kantor di Ujung Pandang. Selain mereka, ada Agus Suparman, Sujadi (Sastrosoegito), Handoko Soemardjo, dan lain-lain.

Kami berupaya untuk terus berkomunikasi namun sayangnya banyak staf yang kini sudah tidak ada. Beni Wahju sudah me-ninggal. Dia adalah geolog terbaik menurut saya. Handoko Su-marjo juga sudah meninggal. Saya sangat beruntung masih diberi umur panjang dan masih bisa bepergian.

Menurut Anda, nilai-nilai apa yang dulu Anda tanamkan di Perusahaan dan masih relevan hingga saat ini?

Secara personal, saya melihat nilai-nilai yang dulu ada masih dipraktikkan hingga hari ini. Saya melihat ada penyatuan yang baik antara entitas bisnis lama dan yang baru. Mungkin ada kalangan yang bertanya-tanya mengapa Inco diakuisisi tapi kita semua

paham bahwa ini kesepakatan bisnis. Menurut saya, Vale meng-ambil-alih dengan cara yang baik dan terus mengembangkan Perusahaan ini.

Apa arti perayaan ulang tahun ke-50 bagi Anda?

Saya tersanjung bisa berada di sini dan menyaksikan momen penting ini. Ketika kami dihubungi dan diundang ke Sorowako, saya dan istri sedang dalam perjalanan ke Kosta Rika untuk ber-libur. Sehingga kami hanya punya waktu persiapan yang mepet. Saya katakan bahwa kami senang dan merasa tersanjung telah di-undang tapi akan sulit bagi kami untuk merencanakan perjalanan. Ketika tim Vale telah menyiapkan semuanya, kami sangat senang.

Di usia saya yang hampir 80 tahun ini, datang kembali ke Indonesia atau ke Sorowako tanpa ada insentif rasanya mustahil. Perjalan-annya terlalu jauh dan masih ada tempat-tempat di dunia yang ingin kami kunjungi selagi kami bisa. Maka kesempatan ini adalah bonus besar bagi kami. Selain itu, kami sudah dekat ke Jepang. Anak sulung kami, yang lahir saat penandatanganan Kontrak Karya, tinggal di Jepang satu tahun terakhir ini. Kami belum pernah berjumpa selain via Skype. Jadi dari Sorowako kami akan ke Jakarta selama dua hari dan berangkat ke Jepang tiga hari, setelah itu baru pulang.

Tampaknya Anda dan istri masih sering bepergian?

Kami bepergian demi kesenangan, tidak ada lagi urusan bisnis. Minimal satu kali perjalanan dalam setahun. Kami sudah pernah ke China, menyusuri sungai dari Moskow hingga St. Petersburg, be-berapa kali keliling Eropa, dan masih ada sejumlah destinasi yang ingin kami datangi. Kami ingin melihat dunia selagi bisa.

Jadi tidak ada lagi perjalanan bisnis?

Saya menjadi konsultan untuk teman, rekan kerja yang cukup dekat, hingga awal tahun 2000. Setelah itu tidak ada lagi.

Bagaimana menurut Anda masa depan PT Vale?

Bagus. Anda punya deposit yang unik dan karyawan-karyawan terbaik. Ini lokasi yang bagus, operasi yang bagus.

Adakah pesan yang ingin Anda sampaikan sebagai salah seorang pionir kepada karyawan PT Vale?

Terus lakukan apa yang telah Anda lakukan selama ini. Cintai pekerjaan Anda. Saya mengagumi negara ini, orang-orangnya. Mereka tampak senang menjalani pekerjaan dan itu bagus!

This geologist told about the beginning of exploration project in Sorowako after the signing of the Contract of Work. Hank, as he is addressed, is one of the company's geologists who had to map thousands of hectares of concession areas in a limited time.

When was the last time you visited Sorowako?

My last visit was 11 years ago. The visit was very short and not for business purposes anymore. I have already retired back then. I and my wife got permission to stop by briefly and see the mining site before we proceeded to Australia, New Caledonia, and New Zealand. We were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary at that time. We just stayed for one night, just stopping by.

What do you think about Sorowako today?

I think it's astonishing. I am amazed and very proud of the development that has taken place here. The development continues to occur since long time ago up to this day. Our tour group had just taken part in rafting on Lake Matano and I can see the increasing development of residential area which is

getting vaster with new houses, and I also notice the lake is kept clean with clear water like the old days. I am very happy to see the development of Sorowako. In the past, the first time our team arrived here, there was no road or anything. Indeed, it takes some time to develop to be like this now.

Would you briefly share your career journey while be-ing assigned to Indonesia at that time?

I graduated from Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, in 1961 as a geological engineer. I had worked at Inco before, so when the time came, I was asked to work there again as a geologist. My first assignment was in Guatemala for 3 years. I entered the forests of Guatemala that were very similar to what I did encounter here a few years later.

In 1965, I took leave from work at the Company to study for a Masters degree. I returned to Queens University and it was there that I met my future wife. In 1967, we planned to get married, we had engaged, but Inco assigned me to Australia. When I asked whether I could take my wife to the remote site, I wasn't allowed.

It turned out there was only a drilling camp for single status male workers there, no dormitory for women. After discussed the situation with my fiancee, I decided to go alone because it was the consequence of my job I was committed to. We only pledged to each other to keep our relationship intact although in a long distance. Six months later, I finished my as-signment at the camp and decided to go home to get married. After that, we both returned to Australia. I worked on a joint venture project with BHP in Long Hampton, Queensland, so we settled in Long Hampton for almost 2 years. At Inco at that time, every 2 years you were given the opportunity to spend 1-2 months at home, then be stationed in another location. We went home when my wife was pregnant.

One day, the Company informed me that my next placement would be in Indonesia when the Contract of Work had been signed. I said, "Good. Which part of Indonesia?" When they said Sulawesi, I didn't know where Sulawesi was at that time. But I considered it a good promotion for my career. Especially back then I was young, only 29 years old. So here I am. In Indonesia.

I was attending the party to celebrate the signing of the Con-tract of Work (KK). After the celebration, I got a telegram say-ing that my first son, Jeffrey, had been born in Canada. On the same day, July 27, 1968. Everyone said that was a good sign for this project. Then I went home briefly to meet the newborn family member but I spent almost all of my time afterward in Indonesia.

What kind of works do you feel the hardest at that time?

We had to prepare a lot of things once the KK was signed. We have to photograph the entire land area of 66,000 km2. A very large area to cover. So we hired the KLM company to do the aerial photography which took almost 3 years because they could not fly every day. It was difficult to get enough coverage as they could only fly in a short time due to the bad weather and came back 6 months later after the rainy season ended. We also employed the contractor of British company Taylor Woodrow International, to build the campsite in the central lo-cation within the work area and to supply the logistics for the operations. We agreed that Malili was the central location even though we could not yet reach the main target, Sorowako, at that time.

We started the field works six months before the camp was built. We live in a small, empty warehouse in Malili. It was there

we spent the evening while designing the campsite composi-tion. We brought in a helicopter under a contract and started to cover wider area and conducted exploration in the Bone Bay, before finally reaching Sorowako. We built a radio com-munication network in the first days because the helicopter needed stable radio communication, and so did the crew in the field who spent their everyday life in the forest.

In the first 5 years, Inco was required to open 50% of its work area at the minimum. Within 7 years, we managed to open 95%. Some plots were easy to open, but most parts had to go through a difficult process. The field workers must work very hard at that time.

So you haven't reached Sorowako at that time? And the operational activities were still centered in Malili and around the Bone Bay?

I left Sulawesi right when the field crew managed to take a sample in Sorowako. I returned to Canada to serve in the office because there were two running projects: the Guatemala Pro-ject which was in the feasibility study stage and the Sorowako project. Both required ore reserve calculations and computer-ized works. In Sulawesi, the exploration project entered the next phase. The team had settled in Malili and the exploration was carried out throughout the concession area.

After 2 years stationed in Sulawesi, I pursued a career at the management level in Toronto to finally assume the position of Director for the Southeast Asia and regions other than North America. I was very busy at that time. So busy that I felt fatigue, especially because I had to travel a lot. You certainly understand that traveling in those days needed a much longer time than nowadays. So I retired early after 34 years work-ing for Inco, in 1994. I retired as the Director of Exploration Outside North America. After that, I did a job as a consultant, but not that much.

Did you get complains often from family members for your frequent away from home?

I must say my wife takes care of our family well. I was away from home too often. We have four children. Two of them were in college when I retired, so there were only two children at home. So it's actually not a bad time when I decided to retire back then.

Any unforgettable memory during your staying in the camp in Malili?

At that time Taylor Woodrow had completed the construction of the campsite. We divided the housing for the senior staff and junior staff with single status. Not long after the campsite ready, it was in the mid-December 1968, a fire broke out. One of the workers was smoking in the bed, I think, and it ignited a fire in the senior staff's housing. The whole building was burned down. It was terrible, moreover it happened in the middle of the night. We had security officers from the armed forces and they had a perimeter to guard the campsite. They shot in all directions because they did not know whether the fire was ignited by an accident or an insurgency act or another incident.

During those days we did not have a fire extinguisher. We were only equipped with a small trailer tank filled with water. Certainly it was not enough for putting out the fire so that everything was burned down. Fortunately no one was injured or killed. The thing I remember is all the passports, documents, everything was destroyed. It took months to recover them.

What about happy memories?

Well, there were indeed nice days. We were very close to each other. Our team consists of personnel from Australia, the Solomon Islands, and young Canadian geologists. All had specific experiences. Waheed (Ahmad) came to do the aerial photography. It was a very hard job but he could finish it. The Indonesian team also worked very well. There were Beni Wahju as the Chief Geologist, Hitler Singawinata as the Manager at the Jakarta Office since we had a lot of things to do with the government as well as the matters related to the logistics supply that need to be done, and Rumengan Musu who was then Head of Office in Ujung Pandang. Aside of them, there were also Agus Suparman, Sujadi (Sastrosoegito), Handoko Soemardjo, and others.

We are trying to keep communicating to each other, but un-fortunately many of them have gone. Beni Wahju has passed away. He was the best geologist in my opinion. Handoko Sumarjo has also died. I am very fortunate to be blessed with a long life and can travel still.

In your opinion, what values have you instilled in the Company and are still relevant today?

Personally, I see some values we adopted in the past are still being practiced today. I see a good integration between old and new business entities. There may be people who wonder why Inco was acquired but we all understand that this is a

business deal. In my opinion, Vale takes over it in a good way and continues to develop this Company.

What does the 50th birthday celebration mean to you?

I am honored to be here and witness this important moment. When we were contacted and invited to Sorowako, my wife and I were on our way to Costa Rica on vacation. We only had a short time to prepare. So I said that we were happy and hon-ored to be invited but it would be difficult for us to do the trip. When I learned that the Vale team had prepared everything, we were very happy.

At my age of almost 80 years old, coming back to Indonesia or to Sorowako without any incentives seemed impossible. The trip is too far away and there are still places in the world that we want to visit while we can. So this opportunity is a big bo-nus for us. Besides, we become close to Japan. Our eldest son, who was born at the same date as the signing of the Contract of Work, has been living in Japan in the past year. We haven’t seen each other lately other than via Skype. So from Sorowako we will go to Jakarta for two days and go to Japan for three days, then we go home afterward.

It seems you and your wife travel a lot?

We travel for pleasure, there is no business purpose at all. At least one trip in a year. We have been to China, along the river from Moscow to St. Petersburg, several times going around Europe, and there are still a number of destinations we want to visit. We want to see the world while we can.

So there is no business trip anymore?

I became a consultant for friends, close colleagues, until the beginning of 2000. After that no work at all.

What do you think about the future of PT Vale?

Good. You have unique ore deposits and best employees. The location is good, and so the operations.

Is there any advice to give as a pioneer to the employ-ees of PT Vale?

Continue to do what you have done so far. Love your work. I admire this country, its people. They look happy doing their jobs and that's good!

Dua puluh dua tahun Waheed Ahmad bekerja di Indonesia untuk Sorowako Project. Geolog ini berpendapat bahwa Vale di Indonesia akan dapat terus berkembang tergantung bagaimana perusahaan ini bekerja sama dengan pemerintah.

Akhirnya Anda kembali mengunjungi Sorowako. Ba-gaimana impresi Anda terhadap kota ini sekarang?

Sangat senang bisa di sini, di Sorowako. Seperti pulang ke rumah. Alasan mengapa saya tinggal di Indonesia selama 22 tahun. Saya sudah di project ini selama 16 tahun dan saya memiliki dua putra yang lahir di Malili. Jadi keluarga saya punya kedekatan dengan Indonesia, Sulawesi dan proyek di sini. Dan saya tahu semua tempat di sini dan bagaimana pengalaman yang terjadi untuk sebuah hari baru.

Sekarang sedikit berbeda dari yang saya tinggali terakhir tahun 2014. Secara visual tidak banyak yang berubah. Tapi saya tahu ada banyak perbaikan di pabrik pengolahan dan area tambang dan tantangan yang dihadapi. Semua itu memang perlu waktu untuk dipelajari. Meski demikian, ini adalah project yang besar. Senang bisa kembali ke sini.

Terakhir Anda di sini empat tahun lalu. Bisa diceri-takan perjalanan karir Anda selama di perusahaan ketika itu?

Saya memulai karir sebagai geolog dan juga konsultan khusus. Sebab pada tahun 2001 kami mencari solusi dari permasalahan yang terjadi di area tambang. Ketika itu pabrik pengolahan juga sedang menghadapi masalah peleburan. Jadi mereka memanggil saya untuk menjawab proble-matika di Departemen Mining. Dan akhirnya kami berhasil memecahkan masalahnya. Sebab begitu banyak ahli-ahli di bidangnya yang terdapat di sini. Tantangan akan selalu datang silih berganti. Aspek kadar nikel di pabrik pengo-lahan terus berganti setiap waktu. Tapi orang-orang di sini semuanya terlatih, memahami dan menghargai kesulitan yang mereka hadapi. Semua pihak juga saling berhubungan. Jadi apapun yang terjadi di tambang akan terjadi juga di pabrik. Jadi tambang tidak berdiri sendiri. Tapi tambang dan pengolahan saling bertautan. Peleburan sangatlah penting. Jika pabrik tidak bisa melebur, ini bukan tambang yang baik. Ibarat punya pabrik pengolahannya tapi tidak bisa berproduksi. Kadar nikel memang menjadi isu utama saat ini. Tidak ada kadar yang bagus dan orang-orang di sini sangat memahaminya.

Kembali ke soal karir Anda. Bagaimana perjalan-annya?

Posisi pertama saya adalah geolog. Setelah saya lulus kuliah saya masuk INCO dan dikirim ke Indonesia. Ketika itu masa eksplorasi. Kami tidak tahu apakah di sini benar ada cadangan nikel dan seberapa apa. Kami diminta untuk menemukannya. Dan kami harus bisa mengestimasinya berapa besar kadar dan ada di mana. Semuanya harus dapat dijelaskan. Ketika itu masa-masa eksplorasi, tidak seperti saat ini ada banyak project, aktivitas pengolahan dan sebagainya.

Ketika itu tantangannya sangat berbeda. Tugas saya untuk menemukan dan mengidentifikasi nikel. Sebab INCO punya konsesi sangat luas, 6,6 juta hektar. Kami perlu menemukan area nikel yang tepat dan melepasnya dengan cepat. Se-mentara tidak semua area perlu digali.

Jadi yang kami lakukan saat itu adalah mengembangkan sebuah teknik untuk dapat melakukan penilaian cepat.

Tapi ketika kami memasuki area, kami justru menemukan area yang tidak mengandung nikel. Sulawesi adalah wilayah nikel yang luas tapi sulit menemukannya. Di sini juga banyak perusahaan tambang. Jadi kami saat itu perlu cepat melepas area yang tidak ada kandungan nikelnya. Maka itu kami sampai ke Kolonodale, Bahodopi atau Matarapi.

Jadi saat itu kami punya dua tantangan; pertama mene-mukan area yang punya kandungan nikel dan menyim-pannya. Kedua menemukan area yang tidak ada nikel dan melepasnya. Saat itu dari Kanada hanya ada 2 geolog dan selebihnya dari Indonesia. Kami semuanya bekerja sama. Beberapa di antara mereka adalah Pak Musu, Pak Harju dan saya sendiri. Banyak pelopor yang bekerja dengan kami saat itu. Sebagian besar mereka telah meninggal.

Apa kenangan yang paling berkesan bagi Anda selama di Sorowako?

Ada ribuan memori dan hal menarik. Seperti ketika menje-lajah dan di area eksplorasi kami pernah terpaksa memasak dan meminum air dengan menggunakan helm tambang. Lari dikejar buaya di Danau Towuti sampai ada anggota yang digigit ular piton di area kamp sementara di Bahodopi yang aksesnya sangat sulit. Tidak ada landasan mendarat heli, jalan atau apapun. Sampai pesawat yang membawa obat terpaksa menjatuhkannya ke kami karena tidak ada landasan. Kami tidak punya dokter hampir seminggu. Kami

harus mendaki dari gunung ke gunung. Inilah tantangan di masa-masa eksplorasi. Kalau mau diceritakan semua, tidak akan pernah cukup waktu.

Ketika itu Anda datang dari negara yang memiliki peradaban dan tiba-tiba pindah ke pedalaman di Indonesia. Bagaimana rasanya?

Saat pengembangan proyek waktu itu ada ribuan orang yang datang ke Sorowako. Tentu ada perbenturan budaya ketika itu, khususnya dengan orang-orang yang tidak meng-harapkan kondisi tersebut terjadi. Secara pribadi, saya dan geolog lainnya dari Kanada tidak mempersoalkan hal itu. Tidak perlu memberikan penilaian. Apalagi ada orang-orang hebat yang bekerja dengan kami saat itu; Pak Beni Wahju, Pak Suparman, Jelly Nasution, Pak Surjadi, Pak Musu, Pak Singawinata dan Lukman Kartanegara di Jakarta.

Pertama yang ingin saya jelaskan bahwa Indonesia dan Kanada sama-sama negara yang punya peradaban. Cuma budayanya yang berbeda. Indonesia sangat sopan dalam bertutur kata. Namun perbedaan budaya tersebut tidak mempengaruhi kami sebagai geolog. Geolog di seluruh dunia biasa hidup di pedalaman dan kondisi yang tidak ideal. Begitu pula geolog kami ketika eksplorasi di Kosta Rika sebelum kami ke Indonesia. Hal itu bukan isu bagi saya.

Nilai atau hal apa yang diyakini dan diterapkan perusahaan waktu dulu dan masih sesuai kalau diterapkan sekarang?

Baik Vale maupun INCO adalah perusahaan yang besar. Cuma gaya pengelolaan perusahaannya yang berbeda. INCO dikenal sebagai perusahaan tambang dan penghasil nikel terbesar di Barat. Sedangkan Vale adalah perusahan tambang kedua terbesar di dunia. Spesialisasi INCO adalah nikel, Vale bijih besi dan mereka berkembang sangat cepat dibanding perusahaan tambang nikel lainnya di dunia.

Ketika Vale membeli INCO memunculkan perspektif baru bahwa industri logam ada selain nikel. Vale punya banyak kas. Sementara INCO sebaliknya dan hanya mencari nikel. Vale punya visi di industri logam lainnya; bijih besi, bauksit dan lainnya. Menurut saya Vale membeli INCO dengan cara

yang karena Vale punya banyak pengalaman dan komoditi. Mereka juga punya tambang nikel di Brasil.

Bagaimana masa depan PT Vale menurut Anda?

Tergantung bagaimana perusahaan dapat bekerja sama dengan pemerintah. Tahun 2025 kontrak karya habis dan akan diganti dengan sistem IUP. Sistem ini memiliki banyak risiko untuk perusahaan karena mengatur banyak hal seperti soal royalti, pajak, divestasi dan banyak lagi untuk

tahun-tahun berikutnya dan perusahaan tidak tahu apakah peraturan itu akan berubah. Sementara perusahaan perlu sejalan dengan aturan tersebut. Sementara pemerintah juga akan berpikir tidak perlu memberikan penalti atau masalah baru kepada perusahaan. Ha ini untuk menjaga hubungan baik antara perusahaan dengan pemerintah.

Risikonya di sana. Karena sistemnya berbeda. Tapi saya yakin tidak ada hal buruk yang bakal terjadi. Indonesia mem-butuhkan investasi dan Vale ingin berkembang di seluruh dunia. Vale juga punya investasi di Sumba. Jadi menurut saya Indonesia perlu punya iklim investasi yang menarik.

Sehingga kita punya posisi sama-sama menguntungkan. Perusahaan harus memiliki tanggung jawab kepada masya-rakat dan berkontribusi untuk negara. Jadi menuru saya akan baik-baik saja.

Mungkin situasi itu akan menambah usia PT Vale 50 tahun lagi?

Mungkin lebih. Indonesia adalah negara yang kaya. Ka-laupun cadangan nikel habis, Indonesia masih bisa mene-mukan mineral atau komoditi lain.

Dari perspektif geologis, menurut Anda seberapa besar cadangan nikel Indonesia?

Perusahaan berusaha menemukan cadangan nikel untuk dalam waktu yang masuk akal. Mereka tidak perlu mene-mukan seluruh area nikel dan mengebornya karena itu bisa memakan banyak waktu dan mahal. Seperti stok penyim-panan saja. Kita tidak perlu menyimpan stok selama 30 tahun untuk dijual kan? Jadi perusahaan harus mempertim-bangkan betul waktunya.

Katakanlah cadangannya untuk 25 tahun, artinya peru-sahaan tidak akan stop setelah itu. Perusahaan hanya perlu melakukan pengelolaan yang penuh kehati-hatian dengan waktu yang ada.

Tapi menurut saya Sulawesi punya cadangan nikel yang besar yang cukup untuk ratusan tahun.

Di masa pensiun apa aja aktivitas Anda?

Saya membaca banyak buku. Apapun itu, fiksi non fiksi.

Fotografi masih?

Tidak lagi. Saya hanya melakukannya waktu dulu.

Apa pesan Anda buat PT Vale?

Ketika INCO datang ke Indonesia, kami banyak belajar tentang nilai dan budaya Indonesia. Sebab budaya dan nilainya berbeda dengan Kanada. Misalnya, di Kanada, kalau ada pekerja yang melihat masalah, dia langsung sampaikan. Dia datang ke atasannya dan mengatakan ada yang tidak beres.

Indonesia sangat sopan. Mereka suka diam, meski tidak menyukai hal tersebut. Jadi manajer yang baik adalah bisa mengetahui hal apa saja yang tidak disukai pekerjanya. INCO membutuhkan waktu lama untuk mempelajari hal tersebut.

Vale ke Indonesia dengan suatu alasan. Jadi perlu memahami benar budaya lokal dan melihat perilaku orang-orang yang menghadapi tekanan atau situasi yang berubah. Anda harus mengetahui hal tersebut.

For twenty-two years Waheed Ahmad worked in Indonesia on the Sorowako Project. The geologist believes that Vale in Indonesia will keep growing forward if the company can work hand in hand with the government.

Finally you return to visit Sorowako again. What is your impression of the city this time?

Very happy to be here, in Sorowako. Like going home. The reason why I lived in Indonesia for 22 years. I worked on this

project for 16 years and I have two sons born in Malili. So my family has proximity with Indonesia, Sulawesi and the project here. And I know all the places here where I experienced a new day from time to time.

Now it's a little different from the place I lived in, in 2014. The change is not much, visually. But I can see there have been many improvements in the processing plant and mining area, and the challenges faced. All of theses indeed takes time to occur. However, this is a big project. Glad to be back here.

Your last time being here was four years ago. Can you tell your career journey with the company at that time?

I started my career as a geologist and also a special consultant. Because in 2001 we were looking for solutions to the prob-lems in the mine site. At that time the processing plant was also facing a problem about smelting. So they called me to deal with the problems in the Mining Department. And finally we managed to solve the problems. That’s because so many experts in their respective fields are here. The challenge will always come one after another. The nickel content in the pro-cessing plant keeps changing every time. But the people here are all well trained, understand and appreciate the difficulties they face. All parties are also interconnected. So anything hap-pens in the mine site will also happen in the plant. The mine site does not stand alone. The mine site and the processing plant are intertwined. Smelting is very important. If the plant cannot melt, this is not a good mine. It's like having a process-ing factory but it can't produce. Nickel content is indeed a major issue at this time. There is no good level and people here really understand it.

Back to your career. How is its journey?

My first position is geologist. After I graduated from college I joined Inco and was sent to Indonesia. It was in the explora-tion period. We didn’t know whether there was really a reserve of nickel here and how much. We were asked to find it. You have to be able to estimate how big and where the exact location. Everything must be explained. While back then was a period of exploration, now there are many various projects, processing activities and so on.

At that time the challenge was very different. My job was to find and identify Nickel. Because Inco has a very large conces-sion area, 6.6 million hectares. We need to find the right loca-tions for nickel and decided quickly whether to keep or release

them. Not all locations need to be drilled.

So what we did at that time was to develop a technique to be able to do a quick assessment.

But when we entered the area, it turned out to be a field without nickel at all. Sulawesi has a vast area with nickel but it is difficult to find it. There were also many other mining companies here. So at that time we needed to quickly release the land area with no nickel content. Eventually we arrived at Kolonodale, Bahodopi or Matarapi.

We faced two challenges back then; first, find the areas with enough nickel content and keep them. Second, find the areas with no nickel content and release them. At that time there were only 2 geologists from Canada and the rest from Indone-sia. We all worked together. Among them were Mr. Musu, Mr. Harju and myself. Many pioneers worked with us at that time. Most of them have died.

What are the most memorable memories for you while living in Sorowako?

There are thousands of memories and interesting things. Like when working in the exploration area we were forced to cook and drink water using a mine helmet. Running away chased by a crocodile on the Lake Towuti until there was a man who was bitten by a python in the temporary camp area in Bahodopi where the access into it was very difficult. There was no land-ing pad for helicopter, no roads, nothing. The plane carrying the medicine was forced to drop it to us because there was no runway. We didn’t have a doctor for nearly a week. We had to climb mountain to mountain. These were the challenges in the exploration period. If you want me to tell everything, there will never be enough time.

You were coming from a country with high civiliza-tion and suddenly you entered a remote uninhibited area in Indonesia. How did you feel?

During the project development at that time, thousands of people came to Sorowako. Of course there was a cultural clash at that time, especially with people who did not expect this to happen. Personally, I and other geologists from Canada were not bothered by the differences. No need to judge. Moreover, there were great people who worked with us in the period, such as Mr. Beni Wahju, Mr. Suparman, Mr. Jelly Nasution, Mr. Surjadi, Mr. Musu, Mr. Singawinata and Mr. Lukman Kartane-gara in Jakarta.

First of all, I want to explain that Indonesia and Canada are both civilized countries. We just have a different culture. Indo-nesia is very polite in speaking. But these cultural differences did not affect us, the geologists. Geologists throughout the world usually live in the remote area with non-ideal condi-tions. We the geologists were exploring Costa Rica before we went to Indonesia and it was the same. That is not an issue for me.

What values were believed and applied at the com-pany in the past which are still appropriate to be practiced now?

Both Vale and Inco are large companies. Only the manage-ment style of the companies is different. Inco is known as the largest mining and nickel producer in the West. Whereas Vale is the second largest mining company in the world. Inco's spe-cialty is nickel, Vale’s is iron ore and they are growing very fast compared to the other nickel mining companies in the world.

When Vale acquired Inco, a new perspective emerged that there was other metal industry in addition to nickel. Vale has a lot of cash. While Inco is in the opposite and is only looking for nickel. Vale has a vision in the industry of other metals; iron ore, bauxite and others. I think Vale bought Inco because Vale has a lot of experiences and commodities. It also has a nickel mine in Brazil.

What do you think about the outlook of PT Vale?

It depends on how the company can work together with the government. In 2025 the Contract of Work will expire and will be replaced with the IUP system. This system has a lot of risks for the company because it regulates many things such as royalties, taxes, divestments and more for the following years and the company does not know whether the regulation will change again. While the company has to comply with these rules, the government must think it is not necessary to give a penalty or a new problem to the company. This is to maintain the good rela-tions between the company and the government.

The risk is there. Because the system is different. But I'm sure nothing bad will happen. Indonesia needs investment and Vale wants to grow all over the world. Vale also has the invest-ment in Sumba. So in my opinion Indonesia needs to have an attractive investment climate.

So we are in a mutual benefit position. The company will fulfill its responsibility to the community and contribute to the country. So I think everything will be fine.

Will that optimism add another 50 years to PT Vale's age?

Maybe more. Indonesia is a rich country. Even if the nickel re-serves run out, Indonesia can still find other minerals or other commodities.

From a geological perspective, how much do you think Indonesia's nickel reserves are?

The company is trying to find reserves of nickel for a reason-able period of a time. They don't need to find the entire area of nickel and drill it because it will take a lot of time and is expensive. It’s like a storage. We don't need to keep a stock for 30 years before sale right? So the company has to really consider the timing.

Say the reserve is for 25 years, it does not mean that the com-pany will stop after that. The company only needs to carry out careful management with the available time period.

But in my opinion Sulawesi has a large reserve of nickel which is enough for hundreds of years.

What are your activities in your retirement?

I read a lot of books. Whatever it is, fiction and non-fiction.

Still doing photography?

Not anymore . I only did it in the past.

Any words for PT Vale?

When Inco came to Indonesia, we learned a lot about the values and culture of Indonesia. The culture and values differ from Canada. For example, in Canada, if a worker sees a prob-lem, he immediately says it. He comes to his boss and says something is wrong.

Indonesians are very polite. They like to be quiet, even though they don't like it. So a good manager has to be able to find out what things the workers don't like. Inco took a long time to learn about it.

Vale came to Indonesia for a reason. So it is necessary to un-derstand the local culture properly and observe the behavior of people when they face pressure or changing situations. You must know this.

CoW (Contract of Work) Project bersama Departemen Mines  meresmikan fasilitas Mobile Rush Assay Lab (MRAL) pada 7 Agustus 2018 silam. Fasilitas ini adalah laboratorium yang dapat berpindah tempat (mobile) yang memiliki fungsi layaknya laboratorium analisa sampel yakni mengukur dan

memberikan informasi kadar nikel dan besi dari sampel bijih yang diambil oleh sampler/grade control.

boratorium sampel ore seperti 2 unit crusher, oven, boil crusher, cerent dan 1 unit alat analisis bernama Epsilon 3 (Phillips) untuk membaca dan memberikan informasi kadar besi dan nikel dari sampel.

Di fasilitas tersebut juga terdapat 1 unit genset berkapasitas 20K watt yang berfungsi sebagai sumber tenaga untuk alat-alat listrik di dalamnya. Fasilitas ini juga sudah dilengkapi dengan sarana komunikasi yang terintegrasi ke system server PT Vale sehingga data hasil pembacaan sudah bisa langsung tersimpan pada server user Vale dan juga memudahkan tim Prostech dalam melakukan kalibrasi alat pembacaan dari Plant Site Sorowako. Fasilitas IP phone juga sudah tersedia sebagai sarana komunikasi.  Pengembagan sistim komunikasi ini dilakukan bekerja sama dengan Tim Dispatcer Mines dengan memanfaat kan gelombang Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) pada Menara relay MMS yang berada di sekitar wilayah tambang.

Menurut Supervisor CoW Project Geology PT Vale M. Azrul Amir, MRAL merupakan fasiltas penunjang penambangan yang berfungsi agar petugas grade control mendapat in-

formasi yang cepat dan akurat tentang kadar nikel di suatu area eksplorasi apakah memenuhi kebutuhan dan layak layak ditambang atau tidak. “Selama ini sampel ore dari Tim Grade Control dikirim ke lab MRAL di Kantor Tambang Petea. Padahal lokasi tambang aktif bergerak semakin jauh dari fasilitas  ter-sebut. Sehingga seorang grade control aktualnya saat ini baru bisa mendapat informasi tentang kadar nikel dan layak di-tambang setelah 2 jam atau lebih setelah pegambilan contoh dilakukan, belum lagi jika ada kendala pada LV dispatcher sample yang bisa menambah delay hasil pembacaan sampel,” papar Azrul.

Dengan adanya MRAL yang posisinya akan selalu diposisikan berdekatan dengan front penambangan maka dalam tempo maksimal 30-45 menit, seorang petugas grade control telah mendapat informasi kadar nikel dari sampel bijih di area eksplorasi. “Dengan begitu arah penambangan bisa dilakukan lebih cepat dan efisien,” tambah Azrul.

Saat ini MRAL ditempatkan di Blok Petea Satu Kompartemen 1 yang merupakan area penambangan yang menjadi fokus

5 tahun ke depan. Setelah peresmian ini, MRAL sementara akan beroperasi steady day dengan kawalan 2 petugas (1 petugas preparasi sampel dan 1 petugas analis). “Sementara akan berjalan paralel. Kalau nanti operasional MRAL sudah berjalan lancar, khususnya pembacaan kadar Ni dan Fe sudah konsisten, maka operasionalnya di Kantor Tambang Petea bisa dihentikan dan difokuskan ke MRAL,” ungkap Azrul.

Manager CoW Project Mine Development PT Vale Yusram Rantesalu mengatakan latar belakang munculnya ide ini pada tahun 2015. “Waktu itu kita ingin melakukan high cut off grade dan dari hasil penilaian diketahui bahwa cara efisien dan efektif untuk mencapai target tersebut adalah dengan mendekatkan lab sampel ke front face tambang. Ide yang muncul adalah MRAL ini,” ujar Yusram.

“Untuk jangka panjang, MRAL ini diproyeksikan akan menjadi salah satu fasilitas dan alat dukung penambangan di area Bahodopi dan Pomalaa. Namun sembari menunggu izin-izin di area tersebut, MRAL kita operasikan untuk men-dapatkan hasilnya,” tambah Yusram.

Fasilitas ini merupakan kolaborasi berbagai area seperti CoW Project, Central Engineering dan Departemen Mines-Petea Operation. “Dengan adanya fasilitas ini diharapkan PT Vale ke depan dapat mengimpelemntasikan penambangan yang lebih kompetitif dan efisien,” tegas Yusram.

Menurut Project Manager Capital & Project Management PT Vale Akhmad Khanif Khaidir perencanaan, desain dan fabrikan MRAL telah dimulai pada tahun 2017. “Permintaan dari sponsor waktu itu mereka memerlukan fasilitas lab yang mobile. Sejak itu kami intens berdiskusi untuk membangun fasilitas ini,” ungkap Khanif.

Dengan adanya MRAL yang posisinya akan selalu diposisikan berdekatan dengan front penambangan maka dalam tempo maksimal 30-45 menit, seorang petugas kontrol kadar telah mendapat informasi kadar nikel dari sampel bijih di area eksplorasi.

Department during the inauguration of MRAL.

The CoW (Contract of Work) Project together with the Depart-ment of Mines inaugurated the Mobile Rush Assay Lab (MRAL) on August 7, 2018. This facility is a mobile laboratory with its main function analyzing the ore samples to measure and provide information on the grade of nickel and iron contained in the samples taken by the sampler/grade control officer.

MRAL is actually a 40-foot container that is modified and fur-nished with lab equipment just like a laboratory for analyzing ore samples such as 2 units of crusher, an oven, a boil crusher,

a Cerent instrument and one unit of analysis tool called Epsilon 3 (Phillips) to read and get information on the iron and nickel content in the samples.

The facility also has a power generator unit with a capacity of 20 Kilowatts that serves as a source of energy for the electrical equipment inside. The communication devices in the facility are integrated into the PTVI server system so that the reading data can automatically be stored in the Vale's user server and this makes the Prostech team easier to calibrate the reading tool at

The development of this commu-nication system is carried out in collaboration with the Mining Dispatcher Team by utilizing the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) on the MMS relay tower located in the mining site.

According to PT Vale's CoW Geology Project Supervisor M. Azrul Amir, MRAL is a mining supporting facility that functions to help the grade control officers to quickly and accurately retrieve the information on the nickel content in an explora-tion area whether it meets the standards and is feasible to be mined or not. "Previously the ore samples from the control grade team were sent to the laboratory at the Petea Mine Of-fice. The thing is that the location of active mine kept moving farther away from the facility. So, the control grade team could only get the information about the nickel grade and whether it was suitable for mining after 2 hours or more after the sam-ples were sent, not to mention if there were some obstacles in the LV sample dispatcher that could prolong the delay of the reading results," Azrul said.

Currently the MRAL is located in the Blok Petea Satu Kompar-temen 1 which is the mining area of focus in the next 5 years. After the inauguration, for the moment the MRAL will operate daily manned by 2 officers (1 officer is handling sample prepa-ration and the other is an analyst officer). "For the time being both laboratories will be running in parallel. Once the MRAL

operation runs smoothly, especially when the readings of Ni and Fe content have been consistent, then the operation of laboratory at Petea Mine Office will be stopped and moved to the MRAL," said Azrul.

CoW Project Mine Development Manager of PT Vale Yusram Rantesalu said the idea to operate the mobile lab came up in 2015. "At that time we wanted a high cut-off grade and from the assessment results it was found that an efficient and effec-tive way to achieve it was to bring the sample lab to the mine front. The idea arising was this MRAL," Yusram said.

"In the long run, this MRAL is projected to be one of the min-ing support facilities and equipment in the Bahodopi and Pomalaa areas. But while waiting for permits in the areas, we operate the MRAL to exercise the reading results," Yusram added.

This facility is a collaboration of various parties such as the CoW Project, Central Engineering and the Mines-Petea Opera-tion Department. "With this facility, PT Vale is expected to be able to implement more competitive and efficient mining practices in the future," Yusram said.

According to Project Manager for Capital & Project Manage-ment PT Vale, Akhmad Khanif Khaidir, the planning, designing and fabrication of MRAL began in 2017. "The sponsors at that time requested for a mobile lab facility. Since then we have had intense discussions to build this facility," Khanif said.

Tim pertama Emergency Respons Group PT Vale yang berangkat ke Lombok untuk membantu korban gempa.

Gempa berkekuatan 6,9SR yang mengguncang Lombok, Nusa Tenggara Barat, (5/8/2018). Ratusan korban meninggal dunia dan ribuan pengungsi terjadi. Vale mengirim Emergency Res-ponse Group (ERG/Tim Tanggap Darurat) ke lokasi (8/8/2018). Tim terdiri dari 16 personel dengan komposisi tenaga medis, anggota Fire & Emergency Services, personel Security Services dan personel Communications & External Affairs. “Ini misi mulia. Terima kasih atas partisipasi Anda semua yang be-rangkat ke lokasi bencana. Saya harap kita bisa membantu saudara-saudara kita di Lombok namun tetap mengutamakan keselamatan dan tidak memaksakan diri,” papar COO PT Vale Lovro Paulic ketika melepas rombongan.

Selama di lokasi kejadian, ERG melakukan serangkaian aktivitas untuk membantu para korban gempa. Mulai dari evakuasi korban, perbaikan infrastruktur, bantuan medis, serta penyaluran logistik.

Fokus aktivitas di di Lombok Utara, khususnya di Kecamatan Pemenang dan Kecamatan Kayangan yang merupakan daerah dengan dampak gempa terbesar baik jumlah korban maupun kerusakan infrastruktur.

Aksi ini adalah wujud dari nilai utama PT Vale, life matters most dan do what is right, sekaligus bentuk kontribusi kami terhadap masyarakat dan bangsa Indonesia,” kata Presiden Direktur & CEO PT Vale Indonesia Tbk Nico Kanter.

Berselang sebulan pasca gempa Lombok, tepatnya 29 September, Kabupaten Donggala dan Palu, Sulawesi Tengah diguncang gempa 7,7 SR disertai tsunami. Pada kesempatan ini, Vale juga kembali mengirimkan Tim ERG. Sebanyak puluhan karyawan dan karyawan kontraktor PT Vale diter-bangkan untuk membantu aktivitas pencarian dan evakuasi korban, perawatan medis, penyaluran logistik, assessment keamanan lingkungan hingga perbaikan infrastruktu. Hampir selama sebulan Tim ERG Vale beroperasi di Palu, Donggala dan sekitarnya.

Pada fase pencarian dan evakuasi korban ini, Vale juga mengirimkan 2 unit alat berat dan 2 unit lighting plant untuk membantu proses pencarian dan evakuasi korban yang masih banyak tertimbun reruntuhan atau terkubur.

Sedangkan pada fase rehabilitasi yang dimulai pada per-tengahan November, Vale kembali berkontribusi dengan mengirimkan Tim Construction untuk membantu pemerintah dalam pembangunan rumah hunian sementara (hutara) bagi korban-korban.

Tidak berhenti di situ, pada 13 November 2018, Vale mem-berangkatkan tim Constructionnya  untuk membantu Palu Recovery Program berupa pembangunan rumah hunian sementara (huntara) di Desa Mamboro, Palu Utara. Vale membangun dua unit huntara dan satu unit puskesmas sementara. Fasilitas tersebut dilengkapi dengan air bersih dari sumur bor, lampu penerangan berbasis tenaga surya dan tempat sampah. Pada Januari 2019 huntara selesai sedangkan puskesmas selesai pada Februari 2019.

Berkat aktivitas tersebut, Tim ERG Vale mendapat penghargaan dari Kementerian Energi dan Sumber Daya Mineral (ESDM) pada 28 September 2018. Apresiasi tersebut diberikan kepada PT Vale dan 34 perusahaan tambang lain yang telah melakukan aksi kemanusiaan bagi korban gempa Lombok.

An earthquake measuring 6.9SR rocked Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, on Sunday (8/5/2018). The number of death tolls reached hundreds while thousands others were dislocated. Vale sent an Emergency Response Group (ERG) to the location on Wednesday (8/8/2018). The team consisted of 16 personnel of medical, Fire & Emergency Services, Security Services and

Communications & External Affairs personnel. "This is a noble mission. Thank you for your participation, all of you who will go to the disaster site. I hope we can help our brothers and sisters in Lombok but please prioritize your own safety and not force yourself over the edge," said PT Vale COO Lovro Paulic when seeing off the team.

Once at the disaster site, the ERG conducted a series of activi-ties to help the earthquake victims. They were involved in the evacuation of victims, repairing the infrastructure, medical assistance, and the distribution of logistics.

Their activities were concentrated in North Lombok, especially in Pemenang and Kayangan districts, where the impact of the earthquakes was the worst, both in the number of victims and the damage of infrastructure.

Thanks to their dedication, the ERG of Vale Team received an award from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) on September 28, 2018. The appreciation was given to PT Vale and 34 other mining companies that have carried out humanitarian actions for the earthquake victims in Lombok.

"We express our gratitude for the appreciation of the ESDM Ministry for our efforts to ease the burden on our brothers and sisters in the disaster site. This action is a manifestation of PT Vale's core values, life matters most and do what is right, as well as our contribution to the people and nation of Indone-sia," said President Director & CEO of PT Vale Indonesia Tbk Nico Kanter.

One month after the earthquake in Lombok, on September 29 for the exact date, Donggala and Palu, Central Sulawesi were hit by a 7.7 magnitude earthquake followed by a tsunami.

This time Vale also sent the ERG to the site again. Dozens of employees of PT Vale and its contractors were flown to assist in the activities of search and rescue, medical care, logistics distribution, environmental safety assessments and infrastruc-ture repairment. For almost a month the ERG of Vale Team were operating in Palu, Donggala and the surroundings.

For supporting the activities of search and rescue, Vale also sent 2 units of heavy equipment and 2 units of lighting plants to assist the personnel in the process of searching and evacu-ating the victims who were still buried in debris.

Meanwhile in the activities during the rehabilitation phase which began in mid-November, Vale contributed by sending a Construction Team to assist the government in building temporary housing for the victims.

Help does not stop there. On November 13, 2018, Vale dispatched the Construction team to assist in Palu Recovery Program in form of building temporary shelters (Huntara) in Mamboro Village, North Palu. Vale built two temporary shelters and a temporary health center unit. The facility is equipped with clean water from drilling wells, solar-based lighting and garbage bins. In January 2019 the shelters were completed while the health center will be completed in Febru-ary 2019.

PT Vale signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Cooperation Agreement with the Directorate General of Rural Development of the Ministry of Villages, Develop-ment of Disadvantaged Areas and Transmigration (PDTT), South Sulawesi Provincial Office for Village and People Empowerment and the government of East Luwu Regency to apply some programs of people development and em-powerment as well as the development of self-sustaining villages in the empowerment work area of PT Vale in East Luwu Regency.

The document was signed by PT Vale's President Director Nico Kanter, PT Vale's Vice President Director Bernard Irman-to and PT Vale's Director of Communication and External Affairs Gunawardana Vinyaman, Secretary General of the Ministry of Villages and PDTT Anwar Sanusi, South Sulawesi Governor H.M. Nurdin Abdullah and East Luwu Regent M. Thorig Husler at the Ministry of Villages and PDTT Building, Jakarta, on Monday (11/19/2018).

The Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation Agreement aims to synergize the programs and activities to be held for improving the welfare of the community in the empowerment work area of PT Vale in East Luwu Regency, South Sulawesi.

The scope of cooperation includes the development and empowerment of communities and rural areas, the imple-mentation of the Community Development and Empower-ment Program (PPM) and the Self-sustaining Village Devel-opment Program (PKPM), fostering and strengthening the capacity of government institutions at the rural and urban village level, fostering and strengthening the capacity of the Agency for Inter-village Cooperation as well as fostering and strengthening the capacity of Village-Owned Enter-prises and or Inter-village Joint-Owned Enterprises.

The synergy, according to PT Vale's President Director and CEO Nico Kanter, is to comply with the new regulations, specifically the ESDM Ministerial Decree Number 1824 concerning the Implementation Guidelines for Community Development and Empowerment as well as the Village Law which directs all elements of both the government and the private sector to be together and synergize in the commu-nity development programs.

"In realizing the community development program, PT Vale seeks to study the national and regional targets. We also take the new government regulations related to the village development under our consideration. We hope that with the new design and scheme of the Self-sustaining Village Development Program, the targets of village development can be achieved, including the development goals of East Luwu Regency in 2021," said Nico Kanter.

"We also thank and appreciate the East Luwu Regency Gov-ernment, the South Sulawesi Provincial Government and the Ministry of Village and PDTT who will work together with us in a synergy for the development of our company’s empowerment work area in the future," he added.

Di hari pertama, Fabio melakukan pertemuan dengan perwakilan Inalum, holding company BUMN pertambangan di Indonesia. Hari kedua, agenda Fabio padat diisi chopper tour ke area tambang, PLTA, hingga ke Bahodopi dan Pomalaa. Sore hari, Fabio, Eduardo, beserta rombongan dan seluruh Direksi PT Vale menghadiri pe-rayaan HUT ke-50 PT Vale yang bertajuk “Our Golden Journey”. Pe-rayaan sederhana namun terasa hangat itu berlangsung di Kantin Siloku dan dihadiri karyawan level L1 ke atas.

Fabio tidak memberikan sambutan maupun presentasi. Dia ingin berinteraksi dengan karyawan PT Vale melalui sesi tanya-jawab. Karyawan pun berebut mengajukan pertanyaan. Mulai dari se-berapa penting PT Vale bagi Vale, rencana pengembangan terkait potensi pasar mobil listrik yang diprediksi akan booming, status proyek pengembangan, kiat beradaptasi dengan tantangan zaman, hingga kemungkinan personel PT Vale menduduki posisi strategis di Vale Global. Fabio dan Eduardo menjawab pertanyaan karyawan dengan singkat dan efektif. Fabio menegaskan bahwa masa depan nikel ada di Indonesia dengan cadangan bijih yang begitu besar. Nikel adalah logam masa depan karena merupakan komponen utama dari baterai kendaraan listrik yang potensi pasarnya menjan-jikan.

Masih dalam sesi tanya-jawab, seorang karyawati meminta Fabio membagi sebuah momen dalam hidup yang telah membentuk karirnya hingga hari ini. Singkat kata, kapan seorang Fabio Schvar-tsman mendapatkan “eureka moment” dalam karirnya. “Momen itu ada kaitannya dengan pengelolaan SDM. Ketika itu, saya bekerja di perusahaan yang sangat hierarkis. Setiap orang bekerja terpisah dari orang lain. Kemudian saya sadar bahwa jika kami bisa menya-tukan semua orang maka hasilnya tentu akan jauh lebih baik. Saya menyaksikan sendiri bagaimana sebuah perubahan besar terjadi melalui kolaborasi,” kata Fabio yang datang ke Sorowako bersama sang istri Monica Renno.

Acara selanjutnya benar-benar menghangatkan suasana. Ada pertunjukan grup vokal karyawan V5V yang menyanyikan lagu tema ulang tahun emas PT Vale yang berjudul "Proud to be Vale", kuis “Best of the Best” yang diadaptasi dari permainan Ranking 1 di televisi, dan Most Valuable Person (MVP) Award 2018 yang dibe-rikan kepada karyawan-karyawati dengan pencapaian khusus yang menginspirasi. Seremoni potong tumpeng dilakukan Fabio dan Eduardo sebagai ucapan syukur atas pencapaian usia emas PT Vale. Acara ditutup dengan penampilan dari d’Engineers Band. Perayaan ulang tahun ke-50 PT Vale begitu berkesan hingga Fabio menye-butnya sebagai highlight kunjungannya di Sorowako. Bahkan dia berencana memperkenalkan lagu tema Proud to be Vale ke kantor pusat Vale di Brasil. Obrigado por ter vindo, Pak Fabio, Pak Eduardo!

At the end of the third quarter of 2018, PT Vale welcomed a special guest. For the first time since serving as Vale CEO in May 2017, Fabio Schvartsman visited PT Vale's operations in Sorowako. Although it was only a short visit on 5-7 September 2018, Fabio made time to have a dialogue with the employees and took part in the joy of PT Vale's 50th anniversary celebra-tion. During this first visit, Fabio was accompanied by Vale Base Metals Executive Director Eduardo Bartolomeo, Vice President Commissioner Mark Travers, and General Counsel Alexandre D’Ambrosio after previously attended the Board of

Commissioner (BoC) meeting in Jakarta on September 4, 2018.

On the first day, Fabio held a meeting with the representa-tives of Inalum, the holding company of state-owned mining enterprises in Indonesia. On the second day, Fabio's agenda was filled with a chopper tour to the mining site, hydropower plant, up to Bahodopi and Pomalaa. In the afternoon that day, Fabio, Eduardo, along with the group and all PT Vale Directors attended PT Vale's 50th anniversary commemoration entitled "Our Golden Journey". took place in the Siloku Canteen and was attended by the employees of L1 level and upper.

Fabio did not give a speech or presentation during the event. He just wanted to interact with PT Vale employees through question and answer sessions. The employees then scrambled to ask their questions, starting from about how important PT Vale Indonesia is to Vale Global, the development plan related to the potential of the electric car market which is predicted to boom, the status of development projects, tips to adapt to the challenges of the times, up to the chances of PT Vale's personnel to occupy strategic positions at Vale Global. Fabio and Eduardo answered their questions briefly and effectively. Fabio affirmed that the future of nickel lies in Indonesia with its such large ore reserves. Nickel is the future metal because it is the main component of the battery of electric vehicles whose market potential is quite promising.

Still in the question and answer sessions, an employee asked Fabio to share his big moment of life that had shaped his career to this day. In short, the question is about when a Fabio Schvartsman got the "eureka moment" in his career. "The

moment has something to do with the human resources (HR) management. At that time, I worked in a very hierarchical company. Everyone worked separately from the others. Then I realized that if we could bring everyone together, the results would certainly be much better. I witnessed for myself how a great change occurred through collaboration," said Fabio who came to Sorowako with his wife Monica Renno.

The next program really warmed up the atmosphere. The employee vocal group named V5V performed by singing the PT Vale golden anniversary theme song titled Proud to be Vale, followed by "Best of the Best" quiz adapted from the rank-ing 1 game on television, and the 2018 Most Valuable Person (MVP) Award given to employees with special achievements that inspire others. The ceremonial cutting the rice cone was carried out by Fabio and Eduardo as a thanking deed for PT Vale’s achieving the golden age. The event was closed with the performance of d’Engineers Band. PT Vale's 50th anniver-sary commemoration was so memorable that Fabio called it a highlight of his visit to Sorowako. Hujan lebat terus-menerus mengguyur wilayah Luwu Timur, membuat ketinggian air di aliran Sungai Larona naik secara signifikan. Status “Waspada” pun diaktifkan. Emergency Mana-gement Team (EMT) PT Vale menginformasikan kepada Bupati Luwu Timur bahwa telah terjadi kenaikan level air di tiga PLTA yang dikelola Perusahaan. Bupati menyebarkan informasi tersebut ke unit-unit kerja terkait agar siap siaga.

Hujan tak reda, level air terus naik. EMT kembali melapor kepada Bupati, menyusul laporan ke Balai Bendungan, Dirjen Pengelolaan Sumber Daya Air (SDA), dan Balai Besar Wilayah Sungai (BBWS) Pompengan Jeneberang, dan Kementerian ESDM. Sirene dibunyikan dan status darurat ditingkatkan menjadi “Siaga”. Saat kondisi kian intens di mana level air terus naik, dan saluran-saluran pelimpahan air di Bendungan telah dibuka seluruhnya, status pun dinaikkan ke level “Awas”.

Dengan potensi banjir terjadi di hilir, Bupati pun menginstruk-sikan evakuasi warga untuk diarahkan ke titik kumpul yang aman. Muster point berada di Gedung Pertemuan Masyarakat Malili, Jalan Andi Panguriseng.

Tak lama berselang, banjir terjadi. Namun warga berhasil die-vakuasi dan dinyatakan selamat. Waktu berjalan hingga sekitar pukul 8 malam ketika situasi dinyatakan kembali aman. Warga pun dibolehkan kembali ke rumah masing-masing.

Begitulah garis besar skenario simulasi Rencana Tindak Darurat (RTD) Bendungan Seri Sungai Larona yang diadakan Pemda Luwu Timur dan PT Vale di Malili (13/12/2018). Simulasi batch pertama diikuti puluhan warga Desa Wewangriu (Dusun Patande, Dusun Salabu, Dusun Paorebbae) dan Kelurahan Malili (Dusun Malili dan Dusun Puncak). Simulasi dilakukan dalam koordinasi dengan unit-unit terkait Pemda Luwu Timur seperti Badan Penanggulangan Bencana Daerah (BPBD), Dinas Sosial, Dinas Kominfo, TNI, Kepolisian, PMI, SAR Gabungan Kabupaten Luwu Timur, tokoh masyarakat, dan para relawan.

Simulasi RTD dipimpin oleh Sekretaris Daerah Bahri Suli me-wakili Bupati Luwu Timur, disaksikan oleh pejabat Balai Besar Wilayah Sungai—Pompengan Jeneberang(BBWS-PJ). Tim PT Vale dipimpin oleh Director of EHS, Engineering & Cons-truction Abu Ashar. “Kegiatan ini bagus karena melibatkan pemerintah dan elemen masyarakat. Juga bagian dari tahapan RTD. Selain itu juga membanggakan karena yang pertama dilakukan di Sulawesi Selatan. Ini baru satu tahapan dan baru pertama kali. Nanti akan ada kelanjutannya karena kita men-dapat banyak masukan dari kegiatan hari ini,” kata Abu Ashar.

Mewakili Kementerian Pekerjaan Umum dan Perumahan Rakyat (PUPR), Pejabat BBWS-PJ Ir. Hamzah Mangulang, Sp1 mengungkapkan apresiasi kepada PT Vale yang telah menggagas dan menggelar simulasi RTD. “Simulasi seperti ini penting dilakukan secara rutin di berbagai tempat. Bisa di se-kolah, rumah ibadah, dan lain-lain. Antisipasi perlu dilakukan demi menampik berita palsu maupun hoax yang beredar beberapa waktu lalu soal bendungan PT Vale yang jebol akibat gempa. Saya tegaskan bahwa informasi valid tentang bendungan harusnya berasal dari PT Vale. Setelah itu, tinggal koordinasi PT Vale dengan direktorat di Pemerintah Daerah untuk melakukan tindakan lanjutan,” ujar Hamzah.

Sementara itu, Sekda Luwu Timur Bahri Suli menyatakan harapan agar simulasi dapat memberikan pelajaran bagi semua pihak yang terlibat. Bahri juga mengingatkan agar PT

Vale perlu segera membuat manual operasi dan pemantauan sungai, mulai dari danau, bendungan PLTA, hingga hilir.

Dia juga berharap kegiatan ini dapat memberikan edukasi pada masyarakat tentang kesiapsiagaan dan bagaimana menghadapi kondisi darurat. Dan saya juga berharap ma-syarakat mampu mengenal lokasi muster point dan lokasi evakuasi.

“Sekalipun simulasi ini baru pertama kali dilakukan, namun dapat menjadi acuan untuk pelaksanaan sosialisasi selan-jutnya di tahun depan. Kita rencanakan untuk lakukan secara berkala demi memberikan pemahaman warga dan mening-katkan kesiapsiagaan terhadap kondisi kedaruratan,” ungkap Muhammad Zabur, Kepala Pelaksana Badan Penanggulangan Bencana Daerah (BPBD) Luwu Timur.

Simulasi RTD merupakan bagian dari ketentuan yang diatur dalam Dokumen Panduan RTD Bendungan Seri Sungai Larona yang telah disetujui dan ditandatangani Vale, BBWS-PJ dan Pe-merintah Kabupaten Luwu Timur pada Juli 2017. Serta tindak lanjut pasca studi dan konsultasi penerapan RTD yang diatur sesuai UU Nomor 24/2007 (UU Penanggulangan Bencana), PP Nomor 37/2010 (PP Bendungan) dan beberapa Permen terkait penanggulangan bencana dengan pihak-pihak terkait.

PT Vale memiliki tiga pembangkit listrik tenaga air (PLTA) yakni Larona (1978), Balambano (1999) dan Karebbe (2011) dengan total tenaga listrik dihasilkan sebesar 365 megawatt untuk mendukung operasi Perusahaan dan didistribusikan sebesar 10,7 megawatt untuk memenuhi kebutuhan listrik masyarakat melalui PLN.

PT Vale telah mengantongi Izin Operasi berdasarkan reko-mendasi Komisi Keamanan Bendungan sesuai dengan Pera-turan Menteri Pekerjaan Umum Nomor 72/PRT/1997 tentang Keamanan Bendungan, serta dilengkapi sejumlah dokumen perizinan. Sebagai antisipasi terjadinya keadaan darurat, Vale melakukan studi dan konsultasi penerapan RTD. Perusahaan juga melakukan inspeksi rutin terhadap ketiga bendungan sesuai standar yang diatur oleh regulasi.

PT Vale mengantisipasi tindak darurat dengan memasang sistem peringatan banjir yang disebut Flood Warning System (FWS). Sistem peringatan banjir ini akan memberikan peringatan dalam bentuk sirene apabila level ketinggian air sungai dianggap melebihi batas normal atau berpotensi banjir.

Heavy rains constantly poured East Luwu, making the water level in the Larona River increased significantly. An "alert" status was activated. PT Vale's Emergency Management Team (EMT) informed the East Luwu District Head (Regent) that there had been an increase in the water level in the three dams used for generating power (PLTA) managed by the Company. The Regent then disseminated this information to the relevant work units for emergency preparedness and response.

The rain didn't stop, the water level continued to rise. The EMT again reported to the Regent, followed by reporting to Balai

Bendungan, Director General of Water Resources Management (SDA), Balai Besar Wilayah Sungai (BBWS/River Management Agency) of Pompengan Jeneberang, and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources. The sirens were sounded and the emergency status was increased to "standby". When the situa-tion became more intense with the water level kept rising, and the drainage channels of the dams had been fully opened, the status was raised to "beware". With the potential for flooding to occur in the downstream, the Regent instructed to evacuate the residents to be moved to a safe gathering point. The muster point was in the Malili Community Hall, Jalan Andi Panguriseng.

Not long afterward, the flood came. However the residents were successfully evacuated and safe. The time kept ticking until around 8 pm when the situation was declared secure. The residents were then allowed to return to their respective homes.

Such is the outline of the simulation of Emergency Action Plan (EAP) scenario for the Larona River’s Seri Reservoir held by the East Luwu Regional Government and PT Vale in Malili on Thursday (12/13/2018). The first batch simulation was par-taken by dozens of residents of Wewangriu Village (Patande Hamlet, Salabu Hamlet, Paorebbae Hamlet) and Malili Village (Malili and Puncak Hamlets). The simulation was conducted in a coordination with the work units of the East Luwu Regional Government such as the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), local Social Services Office, local Communi-cation and Informatics Office, the military (TNI), the police, Indonesian Red Cross (PMI), East Luwu Regency Joint SAR, community leaders, and volunteers.

The simulation of EAP scenario was led by Regional Secretary Bahri Suli representing East Luwu Regent, witnessed by the officials of the Pompengan Jeneberang River Management Agency (BBWS-PJ). PT Vale team was led by Director of EHS, Engineering & Construction Abu Ashar. "This activity is good because it involves the government and community elements; the EAP scenario stages are also great. Moreover, it is a pride as it’s the first ever done in South Sulawesi. This is only one stage and it is the first time. Later there will be a follow-up because we got a lot of input from today's activity," Abu Ashar said.

Representing the Ministry of Public Works and Public Hous-ing (PUPR), Senior Official of BBWS-PJ Ir. Hamzah Mangulang Sp1 expressed his appreciation to PT Vale for initiating and organizing the EAP simulation. "This kind of simulation is important to be done regularly in various places. It can be held at schools, houses of worship, and others. An anticipation also needs to be done in order to counter the false alarms and hoaxes like circulating some time ago saying that the PT Vale’s dams were broken by an earthquake. I emphasize that the valid information about the dams should come from PT Vale. After that, PT Vale will coordinate with the directorates in the Regional Government to take further actions," Hamzah said.

In the meantime, East Luwu Regional Secretary Bahri Suli said he hoped the simulation had provided lessons to learn for all parties involved. Bahri also reminded PT Vale to immediately

publish the manual for the operation and monitoring of the river, starting from the lake, the dams for hydropower plant, to the downstream area.

He also hoped that the simulation activity would educate the public on the emergency preparedness and response. It is ex-pected that the simulation would make the community easily find the location of muster point and evacuation spot.

"Even though this simulation is the first time ever done, it can become a reference for the next socialization program next year. We plan to do it regularly to provide public understand-ing and improve the emergency preparedness and response," said Muhammad Zabur, Managing Director of the East Luwu Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD).

The EAP simulation is part of the provisions stipulated in the EAP Guidance Document for the Larona River’s Seri Reser-voir approved and signed by Vale, BBWS-PJ and East Luwu Regency Government in July 2017. As well as the follow-up of the post-study and consultation on the implementation of the EAP regulated under the Law Number 24/2007 (Disaster Man-agement Law), the Government Regulation (PP) on Reservoir Number 37/2010 and several ministerial regulations on the disaster management with related parties.

PT Vale operates three hydropower plants (PLTA), namely La-rona (1978), Balambano (1999) and Karebbe (2011) with a total power output of 365 Megawatts to support the Company's operations and distribute 10.7 Megawatts of electricity to the community through the state-owned company PLN.

PT Vale has obtained the Operation Permit based on the rec-ommendation of the Dam Safety Commission in accordance with the Minister of Public Works Regulation No. 72/PRT/1997 concerning Dam Safety, as well as a number of related licens-ing documents. In anticipation of an emergency, Vale has conducted studies and consultations on the implementation of the EAP. The company also holds routine inspections on the all three dams according to the standards regulated by the applicable laws.

PT Vale has set the emergency preparedness and response measures by installing the Flood Warning System (FWS). This flood warning system will set off a warning in the form of a loud siren sound when the river water level exceeds the nor-mal mark or potentially causes a flood.

Hangat dan penuh ambien emosi ketika acara perpisahan Lovro Paulic dan Tonina Paulic dengan keluarga besar PT Vale berlangsung di Gedung Ontaeluwu, Sorowako (18/12/2018). “Lovro adalah sosok yang sangat peduli. Dia juga selalu menjadi penyeimbang situasi,” ungkap Wakil Presiden Direktur Bernardus Irmanto.

Bergantian CFO Febriany Eddy memulai kesannya dengan menceri-takan sosok Toni. “Saya salut dengan Toni yang bisa berhasil menjadi wanita karir, ibu dan sekaligus istri yang luar biasa. Saya belajar banyak dari dia. Sedangkan Lovro selalu menjadi orang yang bisa diandalkan. Ketika saya memerlukan pandangan, dia selalu dapat membantu dengan perspektif lain. Dia seperti guardian angel,” ujar Febri dengan mata berkaca-kaca. Tepuk tangan pun bergemuruh.

Namun suasana emosional tersebut mencair lantaran CEO Nico Kanter memandu acara dengan me-roasting Lovro. “Saya yakin dan percaya Toni adalah orang yang transparan dan berimbang. Tapi Lovro? He needs to improve”. Seluruh tamu pun tertawa mendengar kelakar tersebut.

Lovro Paulic bergabung di PT Vale sejak April 2016. Sebelumnya, Lovro adalah Vice President Manitoba Operations di Vale Canada Li-mited (Vale Base Metal). Di Indonesia, Lovro dipercaya sebagai Chief Operating Officer. Beberapa “hal baru” Lovro yang berhasil mewarnai Vale di Indonesia adalah keberadaan INS 003 yakni sebuah alat yang membantu para pekerja di Vale, khususnya pimpinan membentuk

perilaku dan budaya keselamatan kerja yang didasari akuntabilitas.

Hasilnya, di masa kepemimpinan Lovro, Vale meraih free fatality selama 1.185 hari yang juga sebuah rekor baru. Juga memberikan on time performance audit finding resolution tiap tahun dengan hasil yang sangat baik. Lovro juga dikenal sebagai sosok yang mudah berbaur dengan masyarakat. Bahkan hobinya terhadap water sport membuatnya dapat mengumpulkan warga-warga setempat untuk membentuk komunitas dan aktivitas ski air.

“Ternyata tiga tahun adalah waktu yang cepat. Awal kami pindah ke sini, kami benar-benar merasa berat. Tapi ternyata saat ini malah lebih berat dari pada saat kami datang. Sorowako seperti rumah kami. This is paradise karena orang-orangnya dan Matano yang mengagumkan. Jadilah orang yang menginspirasi dan” ujar Lovro.

Sementara Toni juga menyampaikan kesan.  “Terima kasih banyak karena telah menyambut kami. Ini bukan selamat tinggal. Tapi sampai berjumpa lagi karena kita sudah seperti keluarga,” ujar Toni.

Warm and full of emotion air was covering the event to farewell Lovro Paulic and Tonina Paulic, attended by PT Vale’s employees and their families held at the Ontaeluwu Building, Sorowako on December 18, 2018. "Lovro is a very caring per-son. He also always becomes the cooler of heating situation," said Vice President Director Bernardus Irmanto.

Next, it was CFO Febriany Eddy's turn to tell her impression about Toni’s persona. "I salute Toni for her success in running a remarkable career, a mother and a wife at once. I learned a lot from her. Whereas Lovro has always been a reliable person. Whenever I needed an opinion, he always came up with some other perspective. He is like a guardian angel," Febri said with tears in her eyes. Applause thundered.

Then the emotional atmosphere was melting away when CEO Nico Kanter turned around the event by "roasting" Lovro. "I be-lieve and am sure Toni is a transparent and balanced person. But Lovro? He needs to improve ". All the guests laughed at the joke.

Lovro Paulic joined PT Vale in April 2016. Previously, Lovro was Vice President of Manitoba Operations at Vale Canada Limited (Vale Base Metal). In Indonesia, Lovro served as Chief Operat-ing Officer. Lovro's "new things" that succeeded in coloring the Vale in Indonesia were the presence of INS 003, a tool that

helped the workers in Vale, especially the leaders, to shape the behavior and culture in the occupational safety based on accountability.

As a result, during Lovro's leadership, Vale won days free fatality for 1,185 days which was also a new record. Another outcome is on-time performance audit finding resolution with very good results every year. Lovro is also known as a person who easily mingles with other people. Even his hobby for wa-ter sports makes him able to gather the local residents to form a community and run some water ski activities.

“It turns out three years flew so fast. When we moved here, it was felt so hard. But now it is even harder to leave than when we arrived. Sorowako is like our home. This is paradise because of its amazing people and beautiful Matano. Be the person who inspires,” Lovro said.

Lovro then added, "Treat people fairly; because this is what leaders do. With good leadership that prioritizes safety and environment, the better productivity will follow later. Thank you for our togetherness in developing the leadership."

In her turn, Toni conveyed her impression. "Thank you very much for welcoming us. This is not goodbye, but until we meet again because we are family," Toni said.

Go Green Port Balantang

Sebanyak 150 batang pohon ditanam karyawan Departemen SCM bersama pekerja kontraktornya di

komplek Pelabuhan Balatang, Malili (4/5/2018). Hal itu merupakan kegiatan utama “Go Green Port

Balantang” yang diinisiasi Departemen SCM bertujuan untuk menghijaukan kembali area aktivitas

operasi Perusahaan di Pelabuhan Balantang. Kegiatan dipimpin CFO Febriany Eddy.

Port Balantang Goes Green

A total of 150 tree seedlings were planted by the employees of SCM Department together with their

contractor’s workers in the Balatang Port complex, Malili on May 4, 2018. This is the main activity of "Go

Green Port Balantang" initiated by the SCM Department, aiming to reforest the company's operational area

around the Balantang Port. The planting activity was led by CFO Febriany Eddy.

QCC & Pensiun

Pada 8 Mei 2018, sebanyak 18 karyawan masuki masa purnabakti dan Quarter Century Club (QCC)

bertambah 31 anggota baru. Malam pelepasan karyawan purnabakti dan apresiasi QCC berlangsung di

Gedung Ontaeluwu). Sesi kedua acara pensiun berlangsung 27 September 2018, dengan 12 karyawan

yang memasuki masa pensiun.

QCC & Pension

On May 8, 2018, as many as 18 employees entered retirement and the Quarter Century Club (QCC) added 31

new members. The night of farewell and appreciation party for the new members of retired employees was

held by QCC at the Ontaeluwu Building. The second session of the same event took place on September 27,

2018, with 12 employees entering retirement.

Akreditasi ISO 14001: 2015

Setelah melalui serangkaian audit oleh Tim Auditor dari lembaga Bureau Veritas yang

berlangsung 6-10 Agustus 2018, PT Vale dinyatakan berhak memegang akreditasi ISO

14001: 2015 untuk penerapan Environment Management System (EMS) tanpa temuan

mayor. Kegiatan audit dan akreditasi berlangsung dan meliputi 33 L2 area Mines, Process

Plant, hingga Support yang berlangsung 6 – 10 Agustus 2018 yang dilakukan auditor dari

lembaga Bureau Veritas. Dengan akreditasi tersebut, PT Vale dapat menerapkan EMS untuk

peningkatan kinerja lingkungan (enhancement of environmental performance), pemenuhan

peraturan-peraturan lingkungan (fulfillment of compliance obligation) dan pencapaian

tujuan lingkungan (environmental achievement ). Sedangkan label ISO 14001 membantu PT

Vale meningkatkan kinerja lingkungannya dengan cara lebih efisien

ISO 14001: 2015 Accreditation

After going through a series of auditing by an auditor team from Bureau Veritas on August

6 -10, 2018, PT Vale was declared entitled to hold the ISO 14001: 2015 accreditation for the

application of the Environment Management System (EMS) without major findings. The audit

and accreditation activities covered 33 L2 areas of Mines, Processing Plant, up to Support. With

this accreditation, PT Vale can apply the EMS to enhance the environmental performance, fulfill

the compliance obligation to the environmental regulations and achieve the environmental

goals. Meanwhile the ISO 14001 label will help PT Vale improve its environmental performance

in a more efficient way.

On August 29 - 30, 2018, the SCM Team conducted a technical training and a follow-up

socialization for the renewal of pre-qualification for the company's local contractor partners in

Malili, Nuha, Towuti and Wasuponda Districts.

Edukasi Gempa untuk Siswa SD

Diprakarsai Parents, Teachers and Friends Association (PTFA) atau Komite Sekolah YPS Lawewu dan

Singkole, PT Vale menggelar acara “Edukasi dan Sharing Knowledge Gempa” (8/10/2018). Kegiatan

diikuti ratusan siswa kelas 1 – 6 SD dengan narasumber geologis Departemen Mines PT Vale Budi

Kumarawarman.

Education on Earthquake for Elementary Students

Initiated by Parents, Teachers and Friends Association (PTFA) or YPS Lawewu and Singkole School

Committee, PT Vale held an event of "Education and Sharing Knowledge on Earthquake" on October

8, 2018. The event was attended by hundreds of elementary school students from grade 1 to 6 with

geological speaker from PT Vale’s Mines Department Budi Kumarawarman.

Peresmian Mining Control Room Baru

Departemen Mines meresmikan Integrated Mining Control Room yang bertempat di Kantor

Harapan, Sorowako. Acara berlangsung 20 Desember 2018 yang dihadiri oleh COO Lovro

Paulic, Manager Mines Mapaselle dan Manajer EHS, Engineering & Constructions Abu Ashar

beserta jajarannya. Ruang kontrol Mining ini merupakan implementasi salah satu pilar Vale

Global “Digital Transformation” di area operation. Dengan adanya ruangan ini maka fungsi

monitoring dan operasi di bagian Mining Dispatch, fungsi kontrol dan monitoring screening

station dan monitoring kesehatan alat tambang yang sebelumnya dilakukan di tempat

terpisah, sudah terintegrasi dan saling berkolaborasi.

Inauguration of the New Mining Control Room

The Mines Department inaugurated the Integrated Mining Control Room at the Harapan Office,

Sorowako. The inauguration ceremony was held on December 20, 2018 and was attended by

COO Lovro Paulic, Mines Manager Mapaselle and EHS, Engineering & Constructions Manager

Abu Ashar along with a number of staff.The Mining Control Room is one of the pillars of

Vale Global called "Digital Transformation". This room makes the monitoring and operation

functions in the Mining Dispatch section, the control function and monitoring screening station

and the monitoring of mining equipment health become integrated and collaborated with each

other, while previously they were done in separate places.
