Stonehenge isa prehistoric monument located in theEnglish countyofWiltshire, about2.0 miles (3.2 km)

westofAmesbury and 8miles (13 km)north ofSalisbury. One of the mostfamous sites in theworld, Stonehenge is composed ofearthworks surrounding a circular

setting of large standing stones. It is at the centre of the most densecomplex ofNeolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, includingseveral hundred burial mounds

Archaeologists have believed that the iconic stone monument waserected around 2500 BC, as described in the chronology below. Onerecent theory however, has suggested that the first stones were not erecteduntil 24002200 BC whilst another suggests that bluestones may havebeen erected at the site as early as 3000 BC.

The HangingGardens ofBabylon areconsidered to be

    one of theoriginal Seven

Wonders of theAncient World. They were built

    in theancient city-

state ofBabylon, near present-dayAl Hillah, Babil, in Iraq. They are sometimes called

the Hanging Gardens of Semiramis (in reference to the legendary QueenSemiramis).

The gardens were supposedly built by theBabylonian king Nebuchadnezzar II around 500 BC. He is reported to

have constructed the gardens to please his homesick wife, Amytis ofMedia, who longed for the trees and fragrant plants of her homeland. The gardens

were destroyed by several earthquakes after the 2nd century BC.

It was later rebuilt.
