Search Engine

• On the Internet, a program that searches for keywords in files and documents found on the World Wide Web.

• Some search engines are used for a single Internet site, such as a dedicated search engine for a Web site. Others search across many sites, using such agents as spiders to gather lists of available files and documents and store these lists in databases which users can search by keyword.

MetaSearch Engines

• A method of accessing information that exists on the www. A Metasearch engine searches several engines and directories at one time and limits the number of results by only showing the top hits (relevancy rankings) from each engine and directory that it searches.

• An example of a search engine that searches other search engines' databases. The term metacrawler is often used generically--and incorrectly--to name any search engine that operates in this manner.

MetaCrawler Engines

• Unlike search engines, metacrawlers don't crawl the web themselves to build listings.

• Instead, they allow searches to be sent to several search engines all at once. The results are then blended together onto one page.
