Pembangunan Berkelanjutan dan Transparansi Imperatif Menurut Global Reporting Initiative (2011), salah satu tantangan utama pengembangan berkelanjutan adalah bahwa hal itu menuntut pilihan baru dan inovatif dan cara berpikir.Sementara perkembangan pengetahuan dan teknologi yang berkontribusi terhadap pembangunan ekonomi, mereka juga memiliki potensi untuk membantu menyelesaikan risiko dan ancaman terhadap keberlanjutan hubungan sosial, lingkungan, dan ekonomi.Pengetahuan baru dan inovasi dalam teknologi, manajemen, dan kebijakan publik organisasi menantang untuk membuat pilihan-pilihan baru dalam cara mereka operasi, produk, jasa, dan kegiatan berdampak pada bumi, orang-orang, dan ekonomi.
