A. Discussion of simple past tense

a) Definition of simple past tense

The Simple past tense is used to state the facts or used to talk about activities

or situations that began and ended at a particular time in the past could be a few

minutes ago, an hour ago, two days ago, last month, last year and so, an important

period of time has passed and nothing to do with the present.

The Simple past tense form of the verb is a simple way to show that an event

never happened and it has been customary in the past. In addition, the tense is also

used.

The simple past tense divided into 2 : nominal and verbal, Similarly with in simple

present tense. verbal was used verb if nominal usually to be as in simple present use

is, am, are in the simple past tense use was and were.

In the simple past tense there are also 3 statement :

In the simple past tense sentence, the word used is the auxiliary "did" and

this applies to all subjects. In different to the simple present tense using "do" and

"does" depending upon the subject of the sentence. So the simple past tense is

easier and less confusing. It's just that we have to know the second form of any verb

that we use.

The adverb of time in the simple past tense :

o Yesterdayo .ago

o Last month

o Last year

o Etc.

Was = she,he,it,name,and I

Were = ou the and we

Positif statement : subject + V2 + object/complement

Negative statement : subject +did not + v1 + object/complement

In the simple past tense sentence was sometimes not use adverbs, but although

there is no adjective in the sentence, we can understand that the activities /

situations occurred in the past.

Example :

I got up late

I didnt go up late

Did I go up late?

The verb used in the simple past tense is a verb form to 2, can be regular and

irregular verbs,In regular verbs, change shape just add d / ed course.appropriate

pattren I list above, the simple past tense, the verb to-2 is only used in a positive

sentence, if in the negative and the introgative aries the second verb must be

converted into the first form of the verb.

Grammar in writing is required,and to activities in past we can use siple past

tense.many students in schools today they not understanding about

grammar,because many teacher not teach about grammar. and it is problematic

when students want to make writing or essay,papers,tesis,etc.

b) The pattern

Positif statement : subject + V2 + object/complement

She took a bath

Subject + was/were + object/complement

She was here this morning

Negative statement : subject +did not + v1 + object/complement

She didnt teke a bath

Subject + was/were not + object/complement

She was not here this morning Interrogative statement :

Did + subject + v1 + object/complement

Did she take a bath?

Was/were + subject + object/complement

Was she here this morning

Subject + (V2) + Object

Simple past tense to talk about in daily activity in the

past time

I often did exercise in the gym

when I lived in Jakarta.

When I was a senior high school

student, I always got up at 5 am

to take a bath.

Simple past tense used in if conditional type 2.

If he studied hard, he would be

pass.

(Jika dia belajar keras, dia akan

lulus.)
