Grace Samboh
SHORT BIO Grace Samboh (b. Jakarta, Indonesia, 1984) started her interest in the arts at ruangrupa—artist-
collective based in Jakarta—where she participated in the organizing of OK Video Militia 2007. She
then moved to Yogyakarta to gain her master in Visual Art Studies from the Graduate School of
Gadjah Mada University. In 2009, Indonesian Visual Art Archive commissioned her to curate the “21
Years Retrospective of Jogja Biennale” as one of the archive-based shows at the Jogja Biennale X –
Jogja Jamming (2009). She participated in the making of Langgeng Art Foundation (2010-2012) as
the executive director/curator.
With her colleagues, she started a closed-door discussion group called Hyphen in 2011. In general,
Hyphen seek to sew bits by bits of the fragmented Indonesian art history. A number of interests
throughout the discussions are rooted into one stance: (re)reading Indonesian contemporary arts
practice and putting it into its own historical context. Hyphen is now an office that does arts and
cultural research and curatorial acts. She is now curating autonomously and tied to Hyphen for arts’
research, publishing and organizational works.
Since 2012, she become a part of the artist-initiated closed-group discussion Ceblang-ceblung and
is also the program manager for the Equator Symposium (run by the Yogyakarta Biennale
Foundation).
The Oei Hong Djien Museum commissioned her to write a book on Jendela group’s 17 years artistic
practice. Titled The Window of Jendela, the book was launched together with a show in the
museum in 2013. Her interest in current collective practices that involves a broader range of
disciplines drew her to observing a number of collectives such as X-Code
films, Lifepatch and Jatiwangi Art Factory. She collaborated with Lifepatch and Hackteria in

SELECTED RESEARCH PROJECTS
2005 – 2007
The common practices of street art and art in public space in Jakarta. The research was self-initiated
in the beginning and later was continued as commissioned by ruangrupa, an artist initiave based in
Jakarta.
Resulted in a database of images, reviews, publications and is all cataloged, stored and accessible
in ruangrupa.
2007 – 2009
Indonesian Visual Art Archive (IVAA) commissioned a research about an event called BINAL
Experimental Arts 1992 in Yogyakarta. The event was held as a rebelious gesture against the
Yogyakarta Painting Biennale that is dominated by senior artists and was the first artists’ initiated art
project that was held in several public venues at the same time.
The research expanded into the history Yogyakarta Painting Biennale (started in 1988) that was later
changed into Yogyakarta Visual Biennale (1994, because of the BINAL Experimental Arts). Due to
Indonesian political situation, in 2001 there was no biennale and once it is held again, it became a
curatorial-driven kind of biennale and the name changed to Jogja Biennale.
Resulted into a archive of Yogyakarta Biennale and BINAL Experimental Arts (consisting of images,
discussion records, new interviews with the participating artists, media reviews) which is stored and
accesible for public in IVAA; and also into an archival show titled Jogja Biennale’s Restropctive: 1988
– 2007 as a part of Jogja Biennale X 2009: Jogja Jamming - The archive movement.

It is generally agreed by scholars, critics and art practitioners alike that Gerakan Seni Rupa Baru
Indonesia (GSRBI, Indonesia New Art Movement) is an influential art collective which has played a
very significant role in the development of contemporary art in Indonesia. However, there is very little
reliable material or comprehensive information about GSRBI. To our knowledge, the only official
document available is the book titled “Gerakan Seni Rupa Baru Indonesia” edited by Jim Supangkat
(Gramedia, Jakarta, 1979). Since then, there has been no new information, in-depth reviews or
critical analyses about the role, relevance and legacy of GSRBI in the context of Indonesian art
history and within the wider Southeast Asian region. We hope that our upcoming publication project
can help provide a deeper understanding about GSRBI to the art community and interested
members of the public.
