Why focus on pioneerism? Because, in

this scenario of transformations, we mustresort to our main strength: our pioneeringspirit, a legacy left by Werner von Siemensentrepreneurial and innovative nature.A pioneer makes its mark in history andpromotes societys progress by exploring newhorizons, opening up new markets, makinginnovations into a business success, thinkingoutside the box, taking on risks andfacing dif culties.

We are perfectly positioned to provide answers tothe most dif cult questions of our time, based onour pioneering achievements and the outstandingperformance of our employees, since it is due to their

work that we are the leaders in many markets andtechnological elds today. Siemens is a pioneer inelectrical engineering and this is re ected to a largeextent in the progress achieved in the industry sector,as well as in healthcare and energy. This pioneeringattitude has helped our company, particularly in BRICcountries (Brazil, Russia, India and China), to respond tothe global crisis in a much more positive manner, as well

as help keep a close eye on the real quantum leap made

by technology. This produces a plethora of opportunities

for investing in our green portfolio, in energy ef ciency,in infrastructure and health solutions. Our pioneerism

    creates solutions for our customers.

This pioneering approach has been our strategy in the

past and will continue being our vision into the future.

A future that will depend on innovative products and

solutions to ensure the well-being of the population,

environmental protection and social and economic

    progress with sustainability continually guiding

    our actions.

    Examples of our pioneering vision

We built the rst telegraph line in 1855.

We were precursors of the age of electricalengineering in 1866.

We took the rst photos inside a human body atthe end of the 19th century.

We installed South Americas rst underwatercable in 1874.

We built Brazils rst steam power plant in 1894.

We produced Brazils rst x-ray machine in 1936 incooperation with Dr. Manuel de Abreu.

Siemens has been in Brazil for over 100 years

and is presently the biggest electric andelectronics conglomerate in the country, with its activities grouped into three strategicsectors Industry, Energy and Healthcare while Siemens IT Solutions and Services ispresent across these three sectors.

The Companys first activities in the country dateback to 1867, with the installation of the firsttelegraph line between the states of Rio de Janeiroand Rio Grande do Sul. In 1895, in Rio de Janeiro, itopened its first office and ten years later Siemens

was founded in Brazil. Over the past century, theCompany has played a key role in building andmodernizing the countrys infrastructure. Today,Siemens equipment and systems are responsible for50% of all electricity generated in the country. InBrazil, the Siemens Group is composed of 8,935employees, six research, development andengineering centers, thirteen manufacturingfacilities and twelve sales and service offices.

We supply a broad range of products and

solutions for protecting the environmentand the worlds climate. Our EnvironmentalPortfolio encompasses the entire energychain from power generation anddistribution for ef cient use of energy inindustry, households and transportationto cutting-edge technologies for watermanagement and air pollution control.

In scal 2009, Siemens generated revenue of

23 billion with products and solutions from itsEnvironmental Portfolio. The green portfolio has grownby 11 percent by comparison with scal 2008, when itsrevenue calculated on a comparable basis totaled

just 20.7 billion. In scal 2009, energy-saving motors,

solar inverter systems and selected components forenergy-saving building technology were among theproducts added to the portfolio.

In scal 2009, Siemens customers worldwide wereable to reduce their carbon dioxide (CO

    2) emissions by

a total of 210 million tons with products and solutionsfrom the Siemens Environmental Portfolio whichthe company rst de ned in 2007. This amount isequal to the annual CO 2 emissions of New York, Tokyo,

London and Berlin put together. In the previous year,

the cumulative savings amounted to the equivalent of

160 million tons. In scal 2011, the annual CO 2 savingsare projected to total at least 300 million tons, which

roughly corresponds to the current emissions of six

major cities New York, Tokyo, London, Singapore,

    Hong Kong and Rome.

Siemens green portfolio showed strong growth in the

area of products and solutions for wind power. Major

orders, for example, were received by the company in

connection with the construction of the worlds largest

wind farm in the Thames Estuary near London. Large

orders of this nature will form the basis for furthergrowth in the future. Gas and steam turbine power

plants and their key components, which continue to

be a strong business area, have also accelerated the

development of Siemens green portfolio. Further

growth drivers are environmentally friendly trains andtrams and the components for so-called smart grids,

the intelligent power grids for which an important new

market is beginning to develop. In this area, which is

also being addressed by numerous stimulus programs

round the world, Siemens anticipates orders with a

total volume of around 6 billion by 2014.
