1.Narrative textThe Legend of Rawa Pening

Once upon a time, there was a little poor boy came

into a little village. He was very hungry and weak. He

knocked at every door and asked for some food, but

nobody cared about him. Nobody wanted to help the little

    boy.

Finally, a generous woman helped him. She gave

him shelter and a meal. When the boy wanted to leave,

this old woman gave him a lesung, a big wooden mortar

for pounding rice. She reminded him, please remember,

if there is a flood you must save yourself. Use this

lesung as a boat. The lesung was happy and thanked

the old woman. The little boy continued his journey. While

he was passing through the village, he saw many people

gathering on the field. The boy came closer and saw a

stick stuck in the ground. People challenged each other to

pull out that stick. Everybody tried, but nobody succeeded.

Can I try? asked the little boy. The crowd laughed

mockingly. The boy wanted to try his luck so he stepped

forward and pulled out the stick. He could do it very

    easily. Everybody was dumbfounded.

Suddenly, from the hole left by stick, water spoutedout. It did not stop until it flooded the village. And no one

was saved from the water except the little boy and the

generous old woman who gave him shelter and meal. As

she told him, he used the lesung as a boat and picked up

the old woman. The whole village became a huge lake. It

is now known as Rawa Pening Lake in Salatiga, Central

    Java, Indonesia.

    2.Recount textVisiting Bali

There were so many places to see in Bali that my

friend decided to join the tours to see as much as possible.

My friend stayed in Kuta on arrival. He spent the first

three days swimming and surfing on Kuta beach. He

visited some tour agents and selected two tours. The firstone was to Singaraja, the second was to Ubud. On the day

of the tour, he was ready.

My friend and his group drove on through

mountains. Singaraja is a city of about 90 thousands

people. It is a busy but quiet town. The street are lined

with trees and there are many old Dutch houses. Then they

returned very late in the evening to Kuta.

The second tour to Ubud was a very different tour. It

was not to see the scenery but to see the art and the craft of

the island. The first stop was at Batubulan, a center of

stone sculpture. There my friend watched young boys

were carving away at big blocks of stone. The next stop

was Celuk, a cente for silversmiths and goldensmiths.

In the past, Thanksgiving was celebrated for their

rich harvest in New England. In North America, however,

it was originally held to thank God for their survival in the

new land which was not easy for them. However, in

Canada, it had been celebrated as in New England.

Thanksgiving now is celebrated in United States of

America and in Canada. Thanksgiving festivals are held

every fourth Thursday of November in the U.S and on the

second Monday of October in Canada. It is usually

celebrated in four to five days in the North America and

    for three days in Canada.

It is celebrated through families and friends

gathering to eat and give good luck. Turkey is the main

dish in the thanksgiving dinner. Thanksgiving parades are

also usually held. In Thanksgiving homes are decorated

with wreaths, fresh and dried flowers. Lamps are lighted

to brighten the environment. Tables are decorated with

best china and antique silver dishes to mark the occasion.

5.Analytic expositionThe power of music in our life

Do you agree that music is important in our life? Yes

I do, music has certain role completing our day to day

activities. Here are some reasons why music is heardeverywhere and anywhere.

Music is a way to express feelings. When we fall in

love, the kind of music wed listen to would be all about

love. When were sad, we would go for music that is

melancholic in nature and immerse ourselves in the

sadness. When were happy, wed choose songs with

    happy tunes too.

Song can help to memorize the last experiences. A

favorite song is a powerful documentary. People withAlzheimer which are impaired the brain would remember

details about songs they were familiar with. For example,

an elderly woman who couldnt even remember her

husbands name would remember the details of her

favorite song; when it was played, how it made her feel

and things about the song that made it especially

    memorable for her.

Further, music can unite people for a cause and

changes the world. A song with good lyric and striking

deep chord can stimulate the universal feeling of all

people. We can see it in the case of the famous and

legendary Michael Jacson's Heal the World. It can arouse

humanism of a lot people in this world.

So what would the world be like without music? It would

    be lonely.

6.Hortatory expositionIndonesian People Should Value All the

Different Culture to Promote Unity of the Nation

Indonesia is a culturally-diverse country. Many

different religions and cultures from many provinces are

now seen living side by side in many places. One of the

biggest questions facing Indonesian today is how to deal

with a culturally diverse citizenry and then promote unity.

    Therefore, Indonesians should appreciate differences

among culture for the following reasons. Firstly, Indonesia

is vulnerable to separation for its archipelago and culture

diversity. Raising tolerance among people is the best way

to maintain the unity among differences. Many ways or

cultures of living are equally legal, even if they are not

regarded as normal by some people. If a society claims to

be tolerant of personal choice, then it must respect the

personal choice to retain their heritage. Then, unity of the

    nation can be preserved.

Secondly, Indonesians must recognize that every

culture has different customs and beliefs. Thus, people are

forbidden to make judgments of comparative value, for it

is measuring something unmeasured. A plurality of

nations, especially in the modern era, can allow for

cultural development and cultural exchange that benefits

both parties. The cross-cultural understanding among

    7/16

cultures makes the world a better place and preserves the

    unity of the nation.

Lastly, raising nationalism is one way to preserve

unity of the nation. It is a sense of fellow feeling between

group members. This promotes cooperation and social

cohesion within the group. The sense of social cooperation

makes welfare, social security and medical programs

    much more likely and stronger.

Cultural differences are sometime a sensitive matter for

people. Indonesian people must teach younger generation

about the importance of the cultural identity and

nationalism to promote unity of the nation.

    7.Explanation textMaking Paper from Woodchips

    General statement

Woodchipping is a process used to obtain pulp and paper

products from forest trees. The woodchipping process

begins when the trees are cut down in a selected area of

    the forest called a coupe.

    Squence of explanation

Next the tops and branches of the trees are cut out and

then the logs are taken to the mill. At the mill the bark of

the logs is removed and the logs are taken to a chipperwhich cuts them into small pieces called woodchips. The

woodchips are then screened to remove dirt and other

impurities. At this stage they are either exported in this

form or changed into pulp by chemicals and heat. The

pulp is then bleached and the water content is removed.

    Closing

Finally the pulp is rolled out to make paper.

9.Discussion textThe Ban on Smoking in Public Places

Smoking ban in public places has been a hot issue

these last months not only in Malta but also in various

countries who are discussing the effects a ban would have.

There have been several debates on smoking ban. Even

though the harmful effects of smoking, both active and

passive, are well known and undeniable smoking is far

from being in decline; it is spreading among young people

    in particular quickly.

Most controversial debate is going on public

smoking ban. The reason is simple, smoking ban affects

directly all people rapidly and we can see its effects in a

short-term period. There have been a lot of arguments

brought up both in favour and against a public smoking

ban. Some of the arguments in favour are the following.

Smoking ban is one of the controversial ways for reducing

smoking and recognizing non-smokers right to health

protection. The health risks of smoking are clear. Passive

smoking does carry risks. Many leading medical and

scientific organizations recognize second hand smoke as a

cause of a range of life-threatening conditions. The health

situation could be drastically improved if one of the risk

factors - tobacco - was eliminated. People have a right to

protect themselves from smoke inhalation. People

shouldnt have to inhale the ill-effects of other peoples

  • 7/30/2019 Anis Tugas Text

    10/16

smoking. The creation of smoke-free public places also

    improves air quality.

Those opposing a smoking ban say that freedom of

choice would be affected by such legislation. Some people

against a ban say that smoking bans damage business. A

smoking ban could lead to a significant fall in earnings

from bars, restaurants and casinos. Another argument is

that the smoker has a basic human right to smoke in publicplaces, and the ban is a limitation for smokers rights.

Businesses, smokers, publicans, tobacco industries, stars,

and some of the non-smokers oppose public smoking ban.

Smokers light a cigarette because they need to smoke, not

because they want it, because nicotine is physically

addictive. Therefore, some smokers think that the public

smoking ban is oppressiveness. They see the ban as a

treatment to smokers as second-class citizens. Smokers

agree that the smoking ban benefits the world, but cannot

support the ban, because effects of nicotine obstruct them.

  • 7/30/2019 Anis Tugas Text

    11/16

Public smoking ban needs to be measured and

understood better. Smokers should not be made to look

like outcasts, but smokers should respect non-smokers

when sharing places. I agree that completely smoke-free

places are the ideal, and some businesses have taken the

decision to go completely smoke-free. However, everyone

agrees that, it is a matter of rights - the right of smokers to

smoke versus non-smokers to protect from passive

smoking and to breathe clean air.

Alyssa Diva Mustika, a student from PamekasanJunior High School, East Java, won the gold medal at the

International Mathematics Contest held in Romania

between March 22 to 29, Antara news agency reported.

Speaking to journalists, Diva said she was glad that

she had been able to win the competition, which she said

had been very tight. Thank God I won. I will study

    harder, she said.

Indonesia sent 10 students to the competition in

Romania. Diva is not the first Pamekasan student to win

an international science competition. Oktavian Latief, a

student from SMA Negeri 1 Pamekasan won gold at theInternational Physics Olympiad in 2006. Another student,

Shohibul Maromi, won the same award in 2010.

    11. Review TextHarry Potter: Order of the Phoenix

OrientationI absolutely love the Harry Potter series, and all of the

books will always hold a special place in my heart.

    Evaluasi 1

I have to say that of all of the books, however, this was not

    my favorite.

    Evaluasi 2

When the series began it was as much of a "feel good"

experience as a huge mug of hot cocoa. The stories were

bright, fast-paced, intriguing, and ultimately satisfying.

    Interpretation

Order of the Phoenix is a different kind of book. In some

instances this works...you feel a whole new level of

intensity and excitement by the time you get to the end. I

was truly moved by the last page. Other times the book

just has a slightly dreary, depressing feel. The galloping

pace of the other books has slowed to a trot here, and parts

  • 7/30/2019 Anis Tugas Text

    13/16

of it do seem long, as if we're reading all about Harry "just

hanging out" instead of having his usual adventures.

Reading in detail about Harry cleaning up an old house,

for example - housekeeping is still housekeeping, magical

or no, and I'm not very interested in doing it or reading

    about other people doing it.

A few other changes in this book - the "real" world comes

much more in to play rather than the fantasy universe of

the previous books, and Harry has apparently been taken

off his meds. I know that he had a lot to be grumpy in this

book, especially with being a teenager and all, but the

sudden change in his character seemed too drastic. He

goes from being a warm-hearted, considerate person tosomeone who will bite his best friend's heads off over

nothing. It just seemed like it didn't fit with his character,

like he turned into a walking clich of the "angry teen"

    overnight.

    Summary

The "real" story seemed to happen in the last 1/3 of the

book, and this part I loved. I actually liked the ending (and

yes, I cried!) as sad as it was. It packed a punch and it

made me care about the story even more. Still a really

good book, with some editing it would have been great.

    12. Anecdote TextSnake in the Bath

    Abstract

How would you like to find a snake in your bath? A nasty

    one too!

OrientationWe had just moved into a new house, which had been

empty for so long that everything was in a terrible mess.

Anna and I decided we would clean the bath first, so we

set to, and turned on the tap.

    Crisis

Suddenly to my horror, a snakes head appeared in the

plug-hole. Then out slithered the rest of his long thin

body. He twisted and turned on the slippery bottom of the

bath, spitting and hissing at us.

    Reaction/Incident

For an instant I stood there quite paralysed. Then I yelled

for my husband, who luckily came running and killed the

snake with the handle of a broom. Anna, who was only

three at the time, was quite interested in the whole

business. Indeed I had to pull her out of the way or shed

probably have leant over the bath to get a better look!

    "take him to the zoo".

The next day the policeman saw the same man in the same

park and the man still carrying the penguin with him. The

policeman was rather supriseed and walked up to the man

and asked "why are you still carrying that penguin about?

Didn't you take it to the zoo?"

"And it was a great idea because he really enjoyed it, so

today I am taking him to the moviest, and the next day I'll

take it to the beach. It'll be so much fun" said the man.
