Reactor design uses information, knowledge, andexperience from a variety of areas: thermodynamics,
chemical kinetics, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, mass
transfer, and economics. Chemical reaction
engineering is the synthesis of all these factors with theaim of properly designing a chemical reactor.

The study of chemical reaction engineering (CRE)
combines the study of
chemical kineticswith
the reactors in which the reactions occur.
Chemical kinetics and reactor design
are at the heart of producing almost all industrialchemicals.
It is primarily a knowledge of chemical kinetics andreactor design that distinguishes the chemical
engineer from other engineers

Kinetics or how fast things happen.If very fast, then equilibrium tells whatwill leave the reactor. If not so fast,
then the rate of chemical reaction, and
maybe heat and mass transfer too, will
determine what will happen.
Contacting pattern or howmaterials flow through and contacteach other in the reactor, how early or
late they mix, their clumpiness or state
of aggregation. By their very nature
some materials are very clumpy (for
instance, solids and noncoalescing
liquid droplets.
