Network Management
Network management, typically applied to large scale networks such
as computer networks, telecommunication networks etc., refers to
the maintenance and administration of such networks at the top level
Network management is the execution of the set of functions
required for controlling, planning, allocating, deploying,
coordinating, and monitoring the resources of a network
In general, network management is a service that employs a variety
of tools, applications, and devices to assist human network managersin monitoring and maintaining networks.

A Historical Perspective
The early 1980s saw great expansion in network deployment.
Companies began to add networks and expand existing networksalmost as rapidly as new network technologies and products wereintroduced.
By the mid-1980s, certain companies were experiencing growing painsfrom deploying many different (and sometimes incompatible) networktechnologies
The problems associated with network expansion affect both day-to-day network operation management and strategic network growth
planning. Each new network technology requires its own set of experts.
Managing large, heterogeneous networks created a crisis for many organizations.
An urgent need arose for automated network management (includingnetwork capacity planning) integrated across diverse environments

Network Management Architecture
End stations (managed devices) run software that enables them tosend alerts when they recognize problems.
Management entities are programmed to react by executingactions, including operator notification, event logging, systemshutdown, and automatic attempts at system repair
Management entities also can poll end stations to check the valuesof certain variables.
Agents are software modules that compile information about the managed devices in which they reside store this information in a management database
provide it (proactively or reactively) to management entities via a networkmanagement protocol.

OS and NE Operations System (OS) performs operations system
functions, including
Operations monitoring
Controlling telecommunications-management functions Network Element (NE) contains manageable
information that is monitored and controlled by an OS
NEs are elements of a telecommunications network
e.g. switching systems, transmission, terminal, etc.
