The kitchen has 'HOT' water I would like to say a big thank you to Shayne Ward (Zoe and Tayla's
dad) for all of his hard work and efforts in installing hot water into
the kitchen. This is going to make a big difference to our clean ups
after our weekly cooking days, and especially on our community
cooking days like our Winter Feast. Shayne didn't stop with the hot
water though, he went to Bunnings and purchased a new timber
bench top and a new larger and deeper sink bowl, and donated his
time to install this.
Shayne's work is greatly appreciated by all of our students and
school community, and is indicative of the great community that we have here at Jilliby Public School. Thank
you Shayne!
Mariner’s Shield Soccer 5’s Gala Day 12 students from Years 5 and 6 will be involved in the Mariners Shield, Soccer 5s gala day. The event will
take place this Wednesday 15th Aug. Kick off for the first game is 9am. Please be aware that the bus will be
leaving the school at 8.30am sharp in order to make it for the first game. Students will need to wear soccer
equipment (shin pads, boots and shorts) as well as their sports shirts, all other gear will be supplied. Parents
are welcome to come along and cheer on our players.
The Amazing Race On Wednesday we are heading up to Somersby Public School with
all six of the small schools in our region to have our first whole
school rehearsal. It is an exciting time as this is the first time we
have brought together every student from each school to perform.
Students must be at school by 8.30am on Wednesday morning.
We will be there for the whole day as stated in the permission notes and the bus travel will be covered by
the school. Somersby Year 6 children will be running a basic tuckshop on the day for recess so you may wish
to pop a few dollars in your child’s bag for a special treat. ALL proceeds raised from this will go to the 'Buy
a Bale' fundraiser supporting our farmers.

Just to answer a few questions that have come through our office this week.
1. Yes. Every child from each of the small schools will be participating and on stage throughout the
performance.
2. Yes. Both the matinee and evening performance are exactly the same show.
3. Yes. We would like children to stay in Wyong between the matinee and evening show unless previously
arranged. Supervision throughout this time will be provided.
4. Yes. We do need you to pick up the children after the evening performance.
5. Yes. You can invite your brother, mother, sister, cousin or neighbour to the performance. The more
people in the theatre the better.
6. Yes. We do know it is a big day (it will be for us as well) but this is a first time ever event so it’s a big
deal for our schools.
Home Reading We have started a new whole school Home Reading program to try and encourage our students to engage in
reading at home. We are asking that all students K-6 read every weeknight for at least 15-20 minutes.
Students are also encouraged to read on weekends if they wish to do so.
Parents are required to write the name of the book and the date, then sign the home reading card and return
it with student books to school each day.
2018 ATHLETICS CARNIVAL - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Our annual whole school Athletics Carnival has been scheduled for Friday, 17th August. In preparation for
the day we are asking for volunteers to help assist with the day’s events. We are looking for marshals for
races, helpers for each group and supervisors/measurers for field events (discus/shot put).
If you would like to volunteer, could you please let Mr Bof know as soon as possible.
Canteen day changed to Tuesday Just a reminder to families that due to the change in canteen coordinators the canteen is now open on
Tuesday’s for recess and lunch orders.
Years 5 & 6 OzTag Gala Day
The 5/6 OzTag day was a fantastic day. Each team played 4
games and had some really tough competition. The boys won their
first game by forfeit but were still able to play a friendly game.
The girls showed awesome teamwork skills and were able to move
the ball down the field. We had some great runs! I would like to
thank all the parents that assisted in the travel arrangements.
Without you we would not have had our teams!
K-4 OzTag Gala Day
Last week Jilliby Public School students took part in the
K-4 and 5/6 Oz Tag gala days. Our students played hard
and showed great sportsmanship during the competitions.
It was great watch our students surprise themselves at
their own resilience and display a never-give-up attitude!
Well done to all teams you have made us very proud. Thank
you to all of the parents who came to support the teams
and to the 5/6 parents who provided transport for the
event.
Trevor Bof, Sports Coordinator
School Photo Day Postponed
The school has had to postpone Photo Day due to a clash of dates with the Small Schools’ Concert rehearsals.
School Photos will now be taken in Term 4 on Wednesday 17th October.
Aboriginal Project
On Thursday our Aboriginal students had the opportunity to work with Sue and Mrs Bowes to start to create
a bowl from the bump on the hugging tree. To do this they marked a shape around the branch scar and started
to cut a valley around the border. To do this they were closely supervised and used a tomahawk. It is hoped
the tree will shed the bark and then they will have the opportunity to finish the bowl with art work. As this
has not been tried before by us, it is a learning process which will help us appreciate the skills of our
indigenous people. We hope to be able to share the finished product in the future.
EDUCATION WEEK PERFORMANCE
Last week, as part of our Education week celebrations all students K-6 travelled to Westfield Tuggerah to perform
class items on centre stage.
Throughout the week there were 12 schools from around the Central Coast performing, and it was a wonderful
opportunity for us to showcase the wonderful work of our students at Jilliby Public School.
Our students all looked wonderful in their costumes and were excited to show the crowd the performances they
had been rehearsing.
Thank you to all of the parents and families who came along to support and encourage our students on the day.
After the performance, students then enjoyed watching Hotel Transylvania 3 at the movies, followed by a
McDonalds treat for lunch before heading back to school. It was a wonderful day and all of the students did Jilliby
Public School proud with their wonderful behaviour.
Grandparents and Family Day celebrations
A big thank you to everyone who came along on Friday to celebrate Grandparents and Families Day. The weather really
turned it on for us, and it was wonderful to see so many family members present on the day.
It was wonderful to see and hear some of the great items that our students showcased both at our assembly and in their
classrooms on the day, they were all very excited to show off their hard work in front of their loved ones.
Thank you to all of the families from 4/5/6 who went to a tremendous effort to make and bake lots of sweet treats for
our students to sell at their Year 6 farewell cake stall fundraiser. Students raised over $400 to go towards their end of year
celebrations.
Days like this give us as a school an opportunity to give back and say thank you for all that you do to support us in giving
your children the best possible education, setting them up for great success in the future.

Classroom Learning
K/1 Classroom
It certainly has been a busy and exciting time in our room recently. In
Week 2 we had the K-4 Oztag Gala Day at Gosford and it was a great
experience to play organised games with other schools. We would like
to say a huge thank you to Mrs Stephens for bringing our yummy
lunches and snacks to make it a great picnic too. We scored lots of
tries and even though we did not make it into the finals, it was a
fantastic day.
On Monday we had another bus trip, but this time it was to Tuggerah
to perform on the stage at Westfield. There were lots of nerves, but the children performed their Maori
Stick and Poi beautifully. Afterwards they had the fun of attending a movie and a special lunch before heading
back to school. I want to congratulate the children on their beautiful manners and behaviour. We will be
travelling to Somersby and to Wyong Art House for further practices and then we will take the stage on the
6th September for the Small Schools’ Combined Concert.
In class we have been learning to read the time on an analogue clock,
collecting and presenting data on graphs and improving our counting
and number skills. In English we are working on our descriptive writing
and spelling patterns. Kindergarten have been developing their Hearing
and Recording sounds with a weekly test. As part of our Science and
Geography we had a lesson in the garden looking at the difference
between and Australian and an Asian vegetable garden. We planted
Wom Bok, beetroot, lettuce, spring onions, capsicum, zucchini, and
bean seeds. We will keep them in the shade house until the frosts have
finished.
On Friday we celebrated our Grandparents and showed how we stay fit with Mousercise, a fun form of
aerobics. We are now looking forward to Book Week and our Book parade on 23rd August.
Wow! What a busy and fun start to term 3.
This week in 2/3/4
Another busy week of learning 2/3/4 this week. We had a great time
performing for the community at Westfield Tuggerah and watching Hotel
Transylvania 3! Thank you to all of our community members who came out
to watch our performance. We finished up our learning about different
types of angles and started working on effective planning for writing. On
Friday we finished up the week with a wonderful visit from our
grandparents and family members. Students thoroughly enjoyed showing
their special family members their work and sharing a lovely poem with
them. Next up a full dress rehearsal at Somersby Public School for our
small schools concert and athletics carnival at Wyong High School on
Friday!
4/5/6 Classroom
This term in Literacy Groups we are looking at the Super Six
Reading comprehension strategies; activating prior
knowledge, making connections, questioning, monitoring,
predicting, inferring, visualising and summarising. The Super
Six Reading comprehension strategies are tools that
students can use while reading to help them understand a
text. These strategies can help students to stay engaged
with a text and gain greater enjoyment while reading.
This week our class will be given their home reader folders.
This is to record the amount of reading students are doing
at home. When students complete 25 & 75 nights they will
receive a special certificate in class and for 50 & 100 nights
they will presented with a certificate at the weekly
assembly. Remember news articles, which is part of this
term’s homework will count towards students’ home reading.
Last Wednesday we had our first Kitchen lesson. Paisley & Charlie reported on the lesson.
Kitchen this week started off with an ear piercing fire alarm. The menu for that session was Potato, Leek
and Chive Soup, Leafy Green Ravioli with Tomato and Garlic or Butter and Sage Sauce, Ratatouille, Master
Salad, Mixed Berry Sorbet and Coconut Rough. We picked some parsley fresh from the garden to put in our
salad and soup. Next we set up the tables, chairs and cutlery. We all sat together and had a blast. After we
washed up and got some mixed berry sorbet with coconut rough. Yum!
By Paisley and Charlie.
Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program It was a wonderful start to the term with the new menu and our senior class cooking last
week. They are the first class to enjoy the luxury of hot water on tap and the new big sink
to wash large utensils.
The menu for this session will be Potato, Leek and Chive Soup, Leafy Green Ravioli with
Tomato and Garlic or Butter and Sage Sauce, Ratatouille, Master Salad, Mixed Berry Sorbet and Coconut
