STATISTICAL SU~£MARY
OF
VESSELS OF 100 TONS AND UP\VARDS,
LOST, CONDElVINED, &c.,
DURING THE YEAR
1921.
NOTE :-This Summary which is based upon the quarterly returns of total losses, &c., includes
vessels which had not been given up as total losses, or oft-be loss of which information had not been
received, when the returns for the qu:trters in which they respectively occurred were compiled.
Particulars of all such additions to the quarterly returns are given on pages 6 to 8.
A distinguishing feature of the Wreck Returns published by Lloyd's Register is that, except as
stated in the footnotes to Table No. 1, they are compiled strictly according to the dates at which the
casualties resulting in total loss actually occurred, and not according to the dates at which reports of
casualties were received.

Of this total :l-!-1 n·,;scls of 53G,537 tons were steamers and motor vessels, and 215 of 137,720 tons were sailing 1·es:-els.

The cltatistical Tables exhibit interesting data as to the relati,·e fre<1uency of the different kimls of casualty, &c., which conclude the existence of vessels. Strandiugs and kindred casualties which a.re r;omprised under the term '•wrecked" are the most prolific cause of disaster. To such casualties are attributable 45· 1 G per cent. of the losses of steamers and motor Yessels, and 38·8 per cent. of sailiug Yessels. Cases of abandoned, foundered, and missing vessels are, no doubt, frequently more or le~s similar in the circumstances of loss. If these be taken collectively, they form i:lO per cent. of tlw steamers and motor vessels, and 35~ per cent. of the sailing vessels removed from the mercantile marine during 1921, owinv, to casnalty.
The aruonnt of tonnage broken up, disniantled, &c. (not in consequence of casualty) in 1921 was 93,431 tons.
The return has been prepared in such a manner as to enable a comparison to be made between the percentages of loss suffered by each of the principal merchant navies in the world. Great as the absolute annual loss of vessels belonging to the United Kingdom appears to be, it is seen to form but a very moderate percentage of the mercantile marine of the country.
Table No. 4 (a ne11• table) shows the number and tonnage of steamers and motor vessels lost throughout the world owing to marine and war casualties during the last 20 years, distinguishing the losses of the principal maritime countries. Cases of vessels broken up, condemned, &c., not due to stress of weather, are excluded.
This table gives for each country the percentage lost of the total tonnage owned. During this period of 20 years (excluding the five war years 1914-18) the average percentage of loss of United Kingdom vessels only amounts to 1 per cent. of the tonnage owned.
