Geologi Sulawesi

• The Western Sulawesi Province represents a continental marginsegment (van Leeuwen et al. 2007). It has a metamorphic basementthat includes theMalino and PaluMetamorphic Complexes.
• The Northern Sulawesi Province comprises a dominantly tholeiiticTertiary volcanic arc built on Eocene oceanic crust (Taylor & vanLeeuwen 1980; van Leeuwen & Muhardjo 2005). Volcanism wasdriven by the northward subduction of Indian Ocean lithospherebeneath the North Arm (Hall 1996, 2002; Rangin et al. 1997).
• Central Sulawesi and parts of the SE arm of Sulawesi are composedof sheared metamorphic rocks and in the east a highly tectonisedmelange complex is present, together comprising the CentralSulawesi metamorphic belt (Sukamto, 1975; Hamilton, 1979;Parkinson, 1991; Parkinson, 1998).
• The East Sulawesi Ophiolite comprises a sequence of dunite, lherzolites and harzburgites, ultramafic cumulates, layered gabbros, isotropic gabbros, sheeted dykes and basaltic pillows and lavas (e.g.Simandjuntak 1986; Parkinson 1991, 1998).
• Micro-continental Fragments of Banggai Sula and Tukang Besi, overlain by Mesozoic to Cenozoic clastic and carbonate sediment(Garrard et al. 1988; Supandjono & Haryono 1993; Surono &Sukarna 1993).

Physiography of East Arm Sulawesi candivided in three units (Rusmana 1997;Sutardji 2006) :
1. Lowland unit around the coast withelevation 0-50 m above sea level. This lowland unit spread from theBulaemo Peninsula in northeast toPoh Bay in the southwest. This unit isdominated by quarter sedimentaryrocks with deposition environmentstart from fluvial to shallowmarine.
2. Hilly unit with elevation ranging from50 to 500 m above sea level. This unitspread from Batui Hills in thenortheast to Batulumpu Hills insouthwest. This unit is dominatedmetamorphic rock, basaltic igneousrocks and carbonate rocks.
3. Mountain unit with elevation morethan 500 m above sea level. This unitspread from Ujung Api mountain ineastern to Kolokolo Bay and LemoroMountain in western. This unitdominated by obducted ophiolite.
