Climate : During transformation phase from veg. to curding & curd dev. climate / temperature plays vital role though some deviations are attributed to light & water condition. It is physiologically different crop in cole group due to intermediate phase of curding
0 0 0between vegetative & generative. Curding from 5 C to 28 -30 C, however, for transformation certain amount of vegetative growth will be necessary to pass over
0 0 0juvenile phase : optimum is 23 C. Tropical crop - curding at 15 -20 C. When tropical varieties grown in low temperature not only they button quickly after passing juvenile phase but leads to riceyness to green bud formation. For vegetative growth: few degree higher than optimum needed for curd dev. (10-15 days), temperature should not fluctuate too much - deteriorates.
Nursery : Nursery Management - Tips to be followed & monitored :
i) Sow the seeds in Pro trays of 98 cavities by using the sterilised cocopeat as a media,
th ii) At 5 day after sowing mild spray with Uthane M-45 @ 1g/litre of H O + Ulala 2
0.3 g/litre of H O or Saaf @ 1g/litre of H O + Ulala 0.2 g/litre of H O.2 2 2th iii) At 15 day after sowing spray with Saaf @ 1g/litre of H O + Ulala 0.2 g/litre of 2
H O.2st iv) At 21 day after sowing spray with Uthane M-45 @ 1g/litre of H O + Ulala 0.3 2
g/litre of H O or Saaf @ 1g/litre of H O + Ulala 0.2 g/litre of H O.2 2 2
v) Hardening of seedlings is must before transplanting . Seedling will be ready for transplanting in 22-24 days after sowing. Transplanting has to be done preferable in evening hours to avoid sun shock & mortality.
Soil & Land Preparation : For early crop in tropics & sub-tropics, light to light medium soil preferred so that the drainage is easier in rainy season. Results are disappointing that the growth is checked due to water stagnation. Therefore in cauliflower even steady growth is imp. Since rampant growth may retard the curd formation & may show growth of bracts.
Seed Rate : 100-120 g/acre
Irrigation : Irrigate as & when required based on the soil type & the local practices.
Spacing : Row to Row : 45 cm & Plant to Plant : 30-40 cm
Fertilizer Kg/Acre : NPK- 80:50:60
1st Picking : Depend upon the Segment : Early tropical 45-50 Days / Tropical or Sub tropical 55-60 days / Temperate - 75 to 90 days
Growth regulator : GA3 effect : more pronounced when curd initiation delayed by high temperature (regulates harvesting time)
Yield T/ha : 16-18 T
Avg. per Fruit Weight (g) : 600-800 g / 1000 - 1200 g / 2500 - 3000 g
Major Impediment : High temperature-Riceyness (Premature initiation of floral buds is characterized as, velvety appearance owing to dev. of small white flower buds at the curding stage, pedicel show longitudinal growth : due to fluctuation in temperature high/low during curding; rampant growth, high RH, heavy nitrogeneous dressing; at high temperature bracteate growth.
Remedies / Control Measures : Uniron 1.0 ml/l for control of DBM, Ulala 0.5 ml/l for Leaf minor control.
Harvesting : Cut the curd immediately it reaches prime condition, if late -flower stalk elongates & loose, riceyness / fuzzy curd- poor quality Trim large leaves keeping sufficient jacket leaves to protect the curd.
Key Points : Pods-Siliqua Bo - Deficiency - Water soaked patches in the centre of curd, later stem becomes hollow with water soaked tissue surrounding the walls of cavity. Adv. Stage rusty brown / pinkish - areas dev. On curd surface. CM - 15 kg Borax/ha Molybdenum - Plants chloratic, turn white along the leaf margin, cupped & wither, eventually leaf dries, growing point collapses. Older plant-lamina of newly formed leaves are irregular in shape, frequently consisting of only a large bare midrib-whiptail. N deficiency develops Mo deficiency & buttoning.
Care i) For avoiding Riceyness - hardened seedlings likely to give better results & since early crops are raised in monsoon, 5-6 week old seedling stand better chance of establishment;
ii) Buttoning - Check in vegetative growth of seedlings, followed by suitable temperature for transformation to curding may induce this malady. Other reason - delayed transplanting) cured by P O application2 5

Season : Generally most preferred season is Sep-Nov (though varies from state to state depending on temperature)
Climate : Peas can tolerate frost at early stages of the growth. However, frost during the later stages of crop growth causes considerable injury to the newly opened flowers and young developing pods. Pods grow best in those regions where there is a slow transition from cool to warm weather in spring.
0Temperature : Optimum temperature for seed germination is 22 C. Optimum monthly mean 0 0temperature for growth of plants is 10 -18 C.
Soil : Crop prefers well drained, loose and friable loamy soil for early crop and clayey soil for high yield. Ideal pH is 6.0-7.5 and it grows under alkaline soil. If soil is acidic, liming is recommended.
Land Preparation : Soil is prepared to a fine tilth by disc ploughing followed by one or two harrowing.
Seed Rate : Seed rate depends on the method of planting, varieties, season of planting and purpose of growing. The seed-rate should be about 30-35 kg/ha.
Planting i) Seeds sown in flat or raised beds by broadcasting or by dibbling at 2.5-5 cm depth (dibbling / line sowing recommended).
ii) Spacing of 45 x 10 cm to be maintained.
Manure and Fertilizers : Apply FYM at 20 t/ha and 60 kg N, 80 kg P and 70 kg K/ha as basal and 60 kg N/ha 30 days after sowing.
Irrigation : Light irrigations at 10-15 days interval to be given. Flowering, fruit set and grain filling periods are critical stages and care should be taken to irrigate crop at these stags. Four irrigations at pre-bloom, pod set and fruit picking stages are recommended.
Weed Control : Care should be taken to remove weeds in early stages of crop. One hand weeding at 25-45 days after sowing is very effective for weed control.
Inter-culture : Earthen up and hoeing is also important operations in peas and helps in root development and growth of plants. This is usually done after weeding and fertilizer application.
Diseases and Management i) Fusarium wilt: Drooping of plants followed by sudden death. Leaves may also turn yellow and drop off prematurely. Pod formation is severely affected. In collar regions of wilted plants, necrosis and discolouration can be seen. The diseased plants can be pulled out from the easily than the healthy ones.
When the diseased stem is cut, there is a dark brown, discoloured band around the vascular system. Infection occurs directly through the root hairs.
Control: Treating the seeds with Carbendazim (2 g/kg of seed) protects the seedlings during the initial stages of growth.
Soil drenching with Copper oxychloride 0.25%. ii) Powdery mildew: Infection is first apparent on leaves as small slightly
darkened areas, which later become white powdery spots. These spots enlarge and cover the entire leaf area.
Severely infected leaves may become chlorotic and distorted before falling. Affected pods are small in size and malformed
Control: Spray inorganic sulphur 0.25% or Tridemorph 0.1%.
Pest and Management i) Pea Aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisi): It is one of the serious pests of pea crop. The aphids attack from January onwards. The green soft-bodied nymphs and the adults attack the young vines and suck the sap of younger parts of
Peas Cultural Practices Peas Cultural Practices plants. The affected plants become stunted and the pods curl, have rough spots and fail to fill.
Control: The insect can be controlled by spraying Malathion (0.05%) or Dichlorvos (DDVP) (0.05%). Spraying should be started as soon as the pest is observed.
ii) Pod Borer (Helicoverpa spp.): The disease is more serious on green pods especially at the stage of maturity. The caterpillars bore into the pods and feed on the seeds.
Control: handpicking of the caterpillar and pupae during the early stages of infestation reduces the pest damage.
iii) Pea Weevil (Bruchus pisorum): Adults feed in blossoms and lay eggs on young pods. Larvae after hatching from the eggs burrow into green seed.
Control: Spraying Malathion (0.05%) or Dichlorvos (DDVP) (0.05%) at the blossoming stage effectively control the pest.
iv) Leaf Miner (Phytomyza atricornis): It is a major pest of pea. The larvae attack tender leaves and feed in the epidermal layers of the leaf by making serpentine mines in which air gets trapped and gives them silvery appearance. The affected leaves turn pale yellow, get distorted and crumpled. Such leaves gradually dry and die away.
Control: Spraying the plants with Dichlorvos (0.05%) at the emergence of new leaves is highly beneficial. Application of Phorate 10 G (1 kg a.i./acre) applied one day before planting is effective in reducing the larval population of leaf miner.
v) Stem Fly (Ophiomyai phaseoli): The stem fly is a major pest of pea. The maggots bore inside the stem leading to wilting of the plants.
Control: Seed treatment with Carbofuran (4%) protects the newly emerging seedlings from the infection. Spraying with Malathion (0.05%) or Monocrotophos (0.04%) as soon as the pest symptom is observed effectively controls the pest.
Harvesting : Peas for fresh market are harvested when they are well filled and when colour changes from dark green to light green. Usually 3-4 harvests at 10 days intervals are possible.

CucumberCultural Practices Soil : Well drained fertile soil. Cucumber grows well in slightly light soil. Cucumber also
thrives well in loam soil which is rich in organic matter.
Suitable Soil pH : 6.5 - 7
Climate : Cucumber is warm season crop and can be grown in tropical and sub-tropical
climatic condition. Optimum growth of the vine does not take place during winter
months. Cucumber is highly susceptible to frost. Optimum temperature rate is 0 0 025 -35 C. Temperature beyond 35 C may lead to reduction in number of female
flowers and hence yield is affected.
Seed Rate : 300 - 400 gm per acre
Sowing Distance : Cucumber can be sown with and without staking. Staking helps in good aeration and
ultimately helps in improvement of fruit quality. Following spacing is recommended
for planting cucumber
i) Row to Row : 75 - 150 cm
ii) Plant to Plant : 30 - 60 cm
Manure and Fertilizers i) For good yield 10 - 15 ton of well decomposed manure should be applied in the
main field. General fertilizer recommendation for cucumber per acre for
optimum yield is N : 100 kg, P : 80 kg, K : 80 - 100 kg.
ii) Half the dose of N and full dose of P and K should be applied as basal dose. Rest
half of the nitrogen should be applied in three split doses at 15, 30 and 45 days
after sowing. It is also recommended to apply Boron and Calcium as per the soil
fertility.
Irrigation : Depending on the soil moisture and climatic conditions irrigate the field once in
3 to 5 days.
Good Practices i) Optimum irrigation to avoid bitterness.
ii) Staking of plants for more yield and good quality fruits.
iii) Pre-emptive prevention of fungal and viral diseases.

Season : Winter : Oct-Nov0 0 Climate : Adapted to cool or moderate climate At 20 -25 C uptake of nutrients was greater
0 0and dry matter content was higher, but at still higher temperature of 25 -30 C root deformation occurs. During hot weather root becomes tough & pungent before reaching edible size. It was noted that yield & quality rose with light intensity.
Nursery : Direct Sowing
Soil & Land Preparation : Best results obtained with light, friable loam soil that contains ample humus. For early crop-sandy-sandy loam, however for summer crop-cool, moist soils give good result. Usually heavy soils produce tough, misshapen roots with a number of small firbous laterals.
Seed Rate : 2 kg/acre

Yield T/ha : 16-18 T
Avg. per Fruit weight (g) : 35-40 cm L
Harvesting : Light irrigation may be given before harvesting to facilitate lifting of roots.
Key Points i) Pungent flavour-volatile Isothiocyanate (trans-4-methyl-thiobutenyl isothiocyanate)
ii) Edible portion of root develops from both the primary root & hypocotyl iii) Inflorescence - Terminal raceme Fruit-indehiscent, 3-7 cm L with 6-12 seeds
Care i) Avoid heavy soils; soil should not contain any undecomposed organic matter, because that may result in forking of roots and misshapen roots. Emergence & root shape were influenced by sowing depth, emergence % decrease with increase in depth.
ii) N application decreases storability ; improper / insufficient irrigation- leads to pungent & tough roots.
iii) Radish has tendency to bulge out of the soil as it grows in size therefore earthing up is recommended to produce quality roots.

Season : Mid Aug - Dec
Climate : It grows well in warm weather, but it attains best colour, texture & quality in a cool weather. Excessive lt hot weather causes - zoning - the appearance of alternating light & dark red concentric circles in the root. They are sensitive to low temperature
0 0(4.5 -10 C), if exposed to such temperature for 15 days , bolting likely to occur before the roots reach marketable size. Requires abundant sunshine for development of storage roots.
Nursery : Direct Sowing
Soil & Land Preparation : Deep, well drained loams/sandy loams are considered best. In heavy soils- roots are likely to be unsymmetrical in shape, also results in poor stand as seedlings may not come out due to formation of hard earth crust, in rainy season. Sensitive to soil acidity (below-5.8 pH). It is one of the few vegs. that can be successfully grown in saline soils
Seed Rate : 2 kg/acre
Irrigation : Irrigate as & when required based on the soil type & the local practices.
Spacing : Row to Row : 40 cm & Plant to Plant : 10 cm

Growth Regulator : Apply manganese sulphate when grown in alkaline soil.
Yield T/ha : 15-20 T
Avg. per Fruit Weight (g) : 125 g
Major Impediment i) Internal black spot / brown heart (Disorder) : Bo deficiency / long dry spell -followed by wet period may cause it. Plant dwarf / stunted, leaves assumes variegated appearance, twisted with longitudinal splitting.
ii) Viral dis: Mosaic / Curly top / Yellow - vector - Aphids, mottling with chloratic, zonate ring spots.
iii) Beet Leaf Minor : Feeds on tissues between upper & lower layers of the leaf, making it unfit for manufacturing of food as a result plant growth completely checked.
Harvesting : Harvested as they attain a diameter of 3-5 cm. They are usually pulled by hand, tops are removed & after washing the roots are graded according to size.
Key Points i) Morphologically, the upper portion of the root develops from the hypocotyl and the lower portion, from which the secondary roots arise develops from the taproot .
ii) Inflorescence large spike, normally develops in the second year, flowers sessile, in cluster of 3-4.
Care i) Thinning is an essential operation, because the seedball is actually a fruit consisting of 2-6 seeds, each of which may germinate produce a plant.
ii) Irrigation : Deficiency of water leads to reduction in size.

fruited varieties set fruit at higher temperature and show tolerance to frost.0Temperature i) Average temperature 30 C high night and day temperature 22-24 & 33-35
markedly reduce fruit set and yield
ii) Summer-high temperature leads to discolouration
iii) Cloudy weather with continuous rains-harmful
Nursery : Nursery Management - Tips to be followed & monitored :
i) Sow the seeds in Pro trays of 98 cavities by using the sterilised cocopeat as a
media,th i i) At 7 day after sowing mild spray with Uthane M-45 @ 1g/litre of H O + Ulala 2

of H O + 19:19:19 (Soluble) @ 1g/litre H O2 2
vi) Hardening of seedlings is must before transplanting, Seedling will be ready for
transplanting 24-26 days after sowing. Transplanting has to be done preferable
in evening hours to avoid sun shock & mortality.
Soil & Land Preparation : Deep, fertile & well drained-good generally, silt-loam and clay loam soils are
preferred pH not more than : 5.5-6, for better growth & development &
