Dear Neuhaus Friends,
It has been cited time and again, from philosopher to economist to inventor, that the true catalyst to invention and innovation is necessity. When our founders, a group of parents and teachers, saw that there was a need for eective literacy instruction in Houston, they laid the foundation for Neuhaus Education Center.
In the past 34 years we have lived by innovation. We have strived to find new tools and new methods to address the diverse needs of our community. Our success is a direct result of our sta’s expertise and the support of our board and community. Thanks to our collective eorts, Neuhaus has provided professional development to more than 65,000 educators, oered adult literacy classes to more than 2,500 adults, and just this year oered information and resources to 3,200 families.
Our mission stays the same – provide evidence-based literacy solutions – but our methodology has changed. We live in a digital era so our classes are now oered on-site (here at Neuhaus), o-site, online, and through video conferencing. We have also changed our programs to meet identified needs. We know that vocabulary is often the stumbling block to higher levels of reading comprehension and critical thinking, therefore our team developed and launched Neuhaus Academy, a web-based vocabulary and literacy program designed for adolescent and adult students.
We find a solution, we turn the page. Our online classes continue to expand the breadth of courses we oer, and they are now available on-demand. You can sign up for Neuhaus classes and begin instruction immediately. In this report you will see how we are ever-focused on turning the page on literacy
through our board’s strategic priorities. In addition to our work here in Houston, we have provided professional development to teachers throughout Texas (Brownsville, Navasota, Victoria, Fort Worth) as well as across the country (Arkansas, California, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina). This year we present you the latest chapter and installation of our mission in promoting reading success. Each page highlights the facts and figures and the various initiatives on which we work and the lives we change.
We remain committed to meeting the individual needs of each child, each family, each teacher, each school, each district, and each state. We understand that each of our stakeholders has unique needs and we want to meet them. We continue to adapt, innovate, and accommodate our learning tools and techniques to each of the communities we serve.
While our projects range from early childhood to adult literacy to research, the through-line for all of them is the support we receive from our faithful friends. We thank you for your continued support.
Robert W. Kirkland Chairman of the Board of Trustees
Dr. Marybeth Flachbart, CALT President and C.E.O.
TEACHER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
• Having continued our partnership with the Houston Independent School District through on-site, in-house, and online presentations, we have continued to provide evidence-based professional development.
• Four model demonstration sites within HISD, Braeburn, Hobby, Longfellow and Jeerson Elementary Schools, were created to see the ecacy of strategies and methods when implemented consistently.
• Teachers, having requested external support from Neuhaus, were sent reading coaches to work with them weekly on their instructional practice. Coaches observed lessons and provided feedback.
RESEARCH
• Neuhaus has embarked on a landmark study on the eect of high-quality, evidence-based professional development on the outcomes of early childhood literacy. We had 22 coaches in 185 classrooms. The evidence is being examined by Education Northwest, a technical lab of the United States Department of Education and a report will be ready in the fall.
• Neuhaus began coaching HISD secondary reading teachers in grades six and nine. Grade six and nine Teacher Knowledge Assessments have been analyzed and both grades saw statistically significant gains.
OUTREACH
• Along with our work with HISD, we have expanded our reach to include work with Independent School Districts in Navasota, Fort Worth, Victoria, Brownsville, Northeast in San Antonio, Hudson, Wimberley, Hays, Klein, Galveston, and Dallas, Texas.
• Neuhaus has provided consulting services for the Idaho State Department of Education Special Education Division, Los Angeles Unified School District, Home Instruction for Parents of Preschoolers and Youth, Louisiana Key Academy in Baton Rouge, and the Kansas State Department of Education.

FAMILY SUPPORT
• The Parent Resource Office has changed its name to the Family Support Office to more accurately describe the work done with the whole family and not just the parent. Throughout the year, the Family Support Office gave parent information sessions, and fielded over 3,200 contacts from individuals seeking help in order to promote their students’ reading success.
• Each year, Neuhaus hosts “College Share,” which meets in the fall and spring. It provides students, parents, and professionals with information that is helpful to high school students with learning dierences planning to attend college. Some topics have included choosing a college, legal rights, college admissions testing, and allowable accommodations.
NEUHAUS ACADEMY
• A Public Relations and Marketing Campaign surrounding Neuhaus Academy has covered its debut and unveiling, which included the creation of a short video that featured the Jane Long Academy pilot program.
• After the success of the pilot program at Jane Long, Neuhaus Academy launched its course “Neuhaus Academy: Beyond the Page” and created four specialized classes focused on the implementation for therapists, teachers, parents, and adult literacy providers.
ADULT LEARNERS
• Neuhaus was invited by the Barbara Bush Houston Literacy Foundation to join in developing “A Blueprint for Community Action” to address Houston’s literacy crisis. Using Neuhaus Academy, Neuhaus will develop a course to train literacy volunteers from other community programs.
• Neuhaus’s adult literacy program is the only program in Houston that uses certified dyslexia therapists to lead adult literacy classes instead of volunteers. The program helps approximately 40 learners throughout the school year.
FACILITIES
• The building reconfiguration has been completed and has provided an additional 16 workspaces. The distance learning classroom has interactive whiteboard technology, and videoconferencing capabilities. The classroom is soundproofed to support the recording of additional LessoNets and videos to be added to the Reading Teachers Network and Neuhaus Academy.
