Members of the Team:
Dr.R.Ravindhran, IQAC Coordinator, Loyola College (Autonomous), Chennai.
Dr.A.Xavier Mahimairaj, Former IQAC Coordinator, Loyola College
(Autonomous), Chennai.
Objectives:
1. To examine the preparedness of the college for the accreditation.
2. To guide the college to prepare the IIQA and SSR as per the SOP of NAAC
Accreditation Manual
3. To clarify on the quantitative and qualitative metrics wherever required.
4. To offer suggestions for the greater preparedness for the peer team visit
Visit Report:
On the day of visit, the heads of various criteria presented the report on
qualitative and quantitative metrics. Each metrics were discussed in detail. The
authenticity of the data, data template and supportive evidence as per SOP of the
NAAC manual have been checked thoroughly to offer the appropriate
clarifications and suggestions to strengthen the report.
Major Observations:
1) The college is ready with required reports, data and supportive proof on all
metrics under all criteria of NAAC assessment and accreditation.
2) The college has been almost ready with IIQA and SSR. A little more data
mining and fine tuning on qualitative reports must be completed to make
the SSR comprehensive in all dynamics.
Recommendations:
1) On certain Quantitative metrics, the coordinator in charge of the criterion
must do more data mining in order to strengthen the data.
2) All members in charge of preparation of the various data template are
asked to create the link and supportive proofs as per the manual.
3) The Management is asked to provide more supports to trace the data and
evidence from the various offices of the college more effectively.
4) A separate provision in the college server to hold all supportive proof and
share the link of the same wherever needed in the SSR has been suggested.
5) The college website has to be updated with all data, link and various reports
that are mandatory for the assessment and accreditation.
6) The team has been advised to go for the submission of IIQA after the
complete preparation of SSR in every aspect.
7) It is suggested that after the successful submission of the SSR, a mock visit
for the preparation of the college on peer team visit.
Conclusion:
The team members of the visit are happy with the progress of the college towards
the process of their first assessment and accreditation. The teamwork and
enthusiasm of the staff and management are highly laudable. This report has been
shared with the management of the college for their further preparation.
The management and IQAC office of Loyola College (Autonomous) assure their

Minutes/ Report of Seminar “The Preparedness of Mentee Colleges for NAAC and NIRF”
Scheme under the auspices of PARAMARSH date: 08th October 2021.
Mentee Colleges Participation: 1. Shri Krishna Swamy College for Women, Anna Nagar, Chennai. 2. Mar Gregorios College of Arts and Science, Mogappair West Chennai. 3. Christ College of Arts and Science, Kilachery , Thiruvallur. 4. Don Bosco Arts & Science College, Kilpauk,Chennai. The seminar on The Preparedness of Mentee Colleges for NAAC and NIRF, under the auspices of
PARAMARSH, and organized by the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of Loyola College was
inaugurated with a prayer song on 8 October 2021. Dr. R. Ravindhran, Convenor and IQAC Coordinator,
welcomed the gathering of representatives of mentee colleges and extended members of IQAC, Loyola
College, at LS Hall. He said that this seminar, conducted under PARAMARSH, a scheme for mentoring,
sustains quality in higher education with the support of IQAC. Prof. Ravindhran observed that NAAC
stimulates planning for national and international accreditation. The Jesuit hallmark and heritage of
intelligence in recording and documentation will certainly aid in the process of NAAC preparation, he
stated.
Introducing the dynamics of the seminar, Dr. P. Sagayaraj, Research Professor and Director, Loyola Data
Centre, said the emphasis for preparedness is the key to success. He stressed that optimum immersion
with optimum time for useful preparation is the key for success in NAAC accreditation. Prof. Sagayaraj
highlighted that the mentor and mentee relationship should transform over the time from handholding
to handshaking and eventually, lead to chain reaction. He said that with the cooperation of the faculty,
the IQAC should move forward from good to better with the true Ignatian spirit of margis.
Rev. Dr. A. Thomas, S.J., the Principal, Loyola College, said that the IQAC members have to transform their
everyday preparedness in family, social and professional life into the academic realm. Preparedness is a
state of mind, an attitude and not an individual effort but an institutional one, he observed. The Principal
said that the primary challenge was in preparing diverse mindsets with diverse levels and that this mission
would become possible only through sheer will and commitment. The Principal reassured that the Jesuits
and the Loyola College would accompany this journey of the mentee institutions.
The first session started with Dr. S. Alfred Cecil Raj, Controller of Examinations, St. Joseph’s College,
presenting the “Framework for Institutionalizing Quality through IQAC.” Dr. Cecil Raj shared that there is
a need to evolve an internal quality system that could envision the contribution of the institution or its
enhancement in the next 10 years. He said that a silent revolution was in the offing in the Indian
educational institutions with the buzzwords - accreditation and ranking. He identified three pillars of this
development as 1. Access and expansion 2. Equity and inclusion 3. Quality and excellence. Further he
stated that if quality has to become the hallmark of higher educational institutions, the four conventional
views of excellence has to be implemented – 1. Resources 2. Reputation 3. Outcome and 4. Context.
Further, Dr. Cecil Raj recounted that the quality assurance should 1. Focus on processes with purpose 2.
Assign specific roles and responsibilities 3. Specify accountability at different levels and 4. Evolve strong
monitoring, evaluation and feedback mechanisms. He outlined the activities of IQAC to be of two kinds –
1. Planning and preparation and 2. Data collection. Dr. Cecil Raj summarized that overall, the quality
improvement methods should consist of 1. Total quality management 2. Continuous improvement
3. Benchmarking and 4. Organizational restructuring.
Dr. Bernad D’ Sami, Director, LISSTAR, addressed the second session on “Achieving Academic Excellence”
by making two references - the Jesuit concept of magis and the Fundamental Duties enshrined in Indian
Constitution. He explained that the Latin term magis meant striving greater and greater and one of the
Fundamental Duties mentioned in the Constitution was to strive towards excellence in all walks of life,
individually and collectively. The Ignatian magis as an effort to open one’s heart and make a holistic person
and cura personalis insisting on individual care and concern are central to any reflections on excellence,
he said. He elaborated that quality has no universal parameters and it is rooted in the environment and
tradition in which it grows, aligned with time and milieu and with the project of nation building. Dr. Sami
insisted that quality is purely an internal process and external agencies can only assist and play minimal
role and not substitute the internal process. Therefore, NAAC requires a homegrown quality
consciousness i.e., a cultivation of institutional culture where all actors are open to self-criticism and
attentive to opportunities for improvement. Dr. Sami said that 21st century learners with different skill
attributes and diversity in the levels of performance need a different pedagogical and assessment
approach and there is a strong need to demythify the exams by allaying the fears. Students can either gain
one of the transferable skills or multi-skills to move ahead in the career, he concluded.
At the end, the resource persons interacted with the participants in the question and answer session.
The seminar was compered by Dr. Tanya Pereira, Assistant Professor, Department of Plant Biology &
Biotechnology, Dr. Judith Vijaya, Assistant Professor, Dean of Sciences, Department of Chemistry and
Dr. Leema Rose, Assistant Professor, Department of B.Com Honours, introduced the resource persons.

FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM REPORT-
04th September 2021
The faculty development programme titled “Enhancing Quality Benchmark in NAAC
Parameters” was conducted on 4 September 2021 at 10:45 am. The guest speaker Dr. John Milton,
Head, Department of Advanced Zoology, Loyola College (Autonomous), Chennai delivered the
keynote address on the curricular aspects of outcome-based learning. Outcome based education
focuses on curriculum designing which consists of PEO’s, PO, PSO’s and COs, CD, OBE.
Outcome-based learning can be assessed as direct assessments like continuous internal assessment
and semester examinations. Teachers can evaluate student’s outcome-based learning through
direct assessment modes. Outcome based education attainment can be equated with co-attainment
of earlier evaluation bloom’s taxonomy of educational objectives inculcate all the teachers with
three basic requirements, like these objectives viz, 1) cognitive 2) affective 3)psycho-motor. While
applying the above two variations, attainment verifies self-appraisal mechanism, mission of the
institution, vision of the college and PEO’s, PO, PSO’s and COS.
Part-I in outcome-based education requires program outcomes i.e. knowledge, skill
attributes, programme specific outcomes aim to develop teaching pedagogy with global and
national level of relevance. Every institution has its own vision & mission of the institution. A
language teacher can teach English grammar through action, or OBE based curricular descriptor.
The entire program schedules can be applied in outcome-based learning by teaching and
evaluating student’s performance in CIA, semester examinations. Apart from this, teachers have
to apply SMART way of teaching - Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-bound.
Every subject has a course description which includes learning objectives of course, learning
outcomes of course. A dynamic lesson plan has to be prepared by the course teacher for each
course.
There are various types of mapping in course attainment outcome. Teachers have to prepare
question bank and blue print by applying bloom’s taxonomy. After conducting all exams like CIA,
semester exam, teachers have to give a rank for each student. This can be assessed with the
following methods, mean, median, mode average deviation, quartile deviation and standard
deviation. Finally, the rank correlation can be given to the students with attainment of all exams
performance.
PART-II of outcome-based learning aims at direct assessment of UG theory courses.
Question pattern should be prepared having one mark questions, two marks questions, five marks
questions and ten marks questions.
The chief guest of FDP spoke about Research Innovation and Extension. Every research
contributes content to teaching methodology. Research and teaching aims at student centered
teaching. Any quality teaching draws from quality research. All researchers are committed and
passionate to understand, explore and create. Science departments can apply for minor projects
through UGC sponsorship. Applied Science departments may approach TANSCHE for funding
projects. Indian Government has proposed research fund that can be used for 10 years in colleges.
All the teaching professors are encouraged to publish their research articles in peer reviewed
journal, UGC care listed journal. Every article in conference proceedings carries 110 points.
Significant benefits of research for both students and teachers are,
1. Students are motivated and participate in active learning, skill development and research.
2. Staff members can use their research papers for research mobilization and teaching
preparation also.
Funding agencies like CSIR, UGC, DST-SERB are granting funds for researchers.
Dr. Sagayaraj spoke om research activities in Arts & Science disciplines. Research must be
original in nature and have significant further scope. The first way to do research is to have a
passion for research. Teachers can publish their own notes as research papers. There are two types
of research,
1. Micro research
2. Macro research
Every department must sign a MOU-MEMORANDUM of understanding. Teachers can conduct
conferences, organizing national, international conferences. Conferences proceedings would add
weightage for their academic research. Physics department staff can research in the following
fields,
1. Management of E-waste
2. Molecular Technology (non-government organization)
Research must possess both quality research and quantitative research. Teachers can avail research
fund for their research and they can publish their articles in Indian citation index, Web of Sciences
and Scopus.
The FDP concluded with a question-and-answer session and discussions from staff
members. All the staff members participated with enthusiasm.

delay further in applying for the NAAC accreditation. Christ College, with 13 years, too should
get motivated to apply for the NAAC process. Rev. Dr. F. Andrew said in future NIRF and funding
will be linked, certain amount of reputation, funding and project are essential for the accreditation.
Mrs. S. Shantha, IQAC Coordinator, Mar Gregorios College, informed that they are going to
submit the SSR by December 2021. Christ College is planning to submit the SSR by next year.
Dr. A. Xavier Mahimairaj provided a glimpse about the two-year NAAC process, UGC projects
and the MHRD idea of PARAMARSH. He noted, three things to motivate the institutions: a.
Managing accreditation as per New Education Policy b. 12B or autonomous status c. Subject the
institution to SWOC, credit analysis, LMS, value added courses, projects and feedback from the
stake holders.
