ACOUSTIC TIME-ALIGNED & COAXIAL SINGLE POINT SOUND SOURCE MONITORS The Peerless HDS250 high-definition loud speaker system is designed to reproduce both music & home theatre audio in true audiophile quality. This attractive and relatively compact sized speaker system gives excellent and enjoyable long-term listening. The powerfully dynamic 5” HDS phase-plug Peerless driver supplies articulate, tight, fast bass with ultra-low distortion and minimal harmonics up to surprisingly high volume levels! The crystal clarity of a beautifully detailed wide sound stage is improved over a majority of other speaker systems due to both the coaxial speaker alignment and the tweeter being counter-sunk into the cabinet which achieves mechanical acoustic time alignment for a brilliantly accurate reproduction with pinpoint sound imaging Combined with a crossover developed with particular attention being paid to the phase alignment achieves a uniquely seamless transition between the tweeter and mid-woofer not usually mastered by traditional systems This makes the HDS250 ideal in home theatre due to the impressive impact of the forward realism achieved and can be placed in any or all of the room positions (front/rear/centre) due to the inherent wide dispersion. The incredible accuracy achieved places this speaker in a “Monitor” class faithfully reproducing even the most subtle details of your favourite music. Multiple driver configurations are also more efficient so are also quite suitable for the low power of valve amplifiers, etc. Ideally matched with our XLS1000 or XLS800 subwoofers for an exceptional high-end audio system. A special version of the HDS250 has been optimised specifically as a horizontally mounted centre channel unit, see our HDS255c.

CROSSOVER SETUP: Do I Cut Any Links?1 NO! In the default set-up there is no need to alter the
crossover in any way. Proceed with the installation...These Links ensure correct and secure connection of BOTH drivers to the amp incase the SHORTING STRAPS become loose or are accidently removed and/or lost.
1 BI-WIRE INSTALLATION. Some audiophiles may wish to take advantage of this option. If you intend to Bi-Wire the speakers to the amplifier, remove the rear input terminals'
SHORTING STRAPS and CUT both LINK-1 and LINK-2.NOTE! DO NOT REMOVE LINK 3, DOUBLE-CHECK THIS.
What Is Bi-Wiring and should I bother?1 The term Bi-Wire simply refers to the fact that you will be running two sets of
loudspeaker cables from your amplifier to each of your speakers. Both the high and low circuits are now entirely separate all the way back to the amplifier.
1 The idea with Bi-Wiring is to give a more direct path of each driver & filter circuit to the amplifier. This takes advantage of an amplifiers high damping factor thus reducing unwanted intermodulation distortion between the mid-woofer & tweeter.
1 Some will argue that there is little to no advantage for the additional cabling cost.Positive results may also depend on the quality of the amplifier and cable used.

Audio Speakers & PA
The 200W XLS800 Subwoofer has been developed for premium performance in small to medium sized rooms for either satellite speaker setups, complimenting any sized loud speaker system with warm quality subsonics, and/or home theatre systems where a compact, yet impressively performing subwoofer is required that does not impose on too much space. The all new, exclusive to WES, true 200Wrms, built-in amplifier has been factory tweaked to our XLS800 designers specifications for extraordinary performance in the low frequency region giving excellent control and power to your audio experience and the absolute best dollar value. This crackerjack amplifier connects via RCA leads to the pre-amp output on a high-end stereo system or the sub-out on any home theatre receiver Provision for connection directly to the stereos speaker wires is there for upgrading midi systems, etc Also, world exclusive to WES, is our all new, high performance eXtra Long Stroke subwoofer driver unit that was developed by Peerless Denmark to our designers specifications for this particular application. Giving exceptionally impressive performance for only an 8” sized driver, this XLS subwoofer has a rigid aerodynamic cast alloy chassis, composite stiffened exotic materials pulp cone, extra long stroke voice coil, very large magnet assembly and high power copper voice coil which produces a driver with dynamic tight fast clean bass These two high technology devices are beautifully integrated into a handsome, premium quality cabinet This unique subwoofer enclosure has double thickness 36mm front baffle, a centre bracing rib with vent support to provide a very strong and rigid subwoofer box with reduced cabinet movement and thus tightening bass and reducing distortion Flanged ports and curved edge box and grille design reduces air-turbulence distortion for a better acoustic, more natural bass sound This remarkable achievement in a relatively compact subwoofer is a clever compromise between practical cabinet size and impressive low frequency sub-bass performance The combination of a Top-Of-The-Line Danish made driver with a quality, dual ported box and optimised 200Wrms amplifier, gives performance that equals or betters most 10” subs, without the bulkiness or boom of similarly priced units The smooth, authoritative bass response extends below 30Hz giving clean, accurate sound that will satisfy a majority of bass hungry enthusiasts with DVD sound effects reproduced with dramatic aplomb. The XLS800 Active Subwoofer will excel in high end speaker systems with CD, DVD, DVD-A and SACD music It will impress by its ability to provide the lower octaves of bass that are normally not produced by a subwoofer speaker of this compact size

XLS800 SUBWOOFER 8"A majority of people may want to upgrade to a high performance, deep bass sub-woofer for an impressive home theater setup butmay not want to live with an over-sized, bulky, black box.
To this end, we have developed a 1.5ft audiophile sub-woofer.
This remarkable achievement of a relatively compact sub-wooferis a clever compromise between practical cabinet size and animpressive low frequency sub-bass response.
A new Peerless 8” speaker has been developed by our audioconsultant, Russell Storey, in conjunction with Peerless Denmarkto produce a high performance driver to suit this specific goal.
The amplifier has also been improved at the design stage toproduce an amp with quality to match the box and driver.
The XLS800 comprises of a single XLS 8" speaker in a dualported cabinet of less than 50L with a built in 200W amplifier. This combination of a Danish made driver witha heavy duty built box and 200Wrms amplifier gives performancethat equals or betters most 10” subs, without the bulkiness ofsimilarly sounding units, or boomyness of similarly priced units.
The smooth, authoritative bass response extends below 30Hzgiving clean, accurate sound that will satisfy a majority of basshungry enthusiasts. For the rest of us, the XLS800 willsupplement any premium speaker system in a small to mediumsized room for an improved, worming sound with music and willalso reproduce DVD sound effects with dramatic aplomb.

Place your speaker cabinet on a non-slip, non-scratch surface.
The ports are on the bottom side, so make sure you installthe amp upright. Pilot holes are pre-drilled so simply screw in the suppliedscrews, caution that you don't thread the screws by over tightening. If using anelectronic screwdriver, adjust to a medium/high torque setting.
Cabling is supplied with the amp and will connect directlyto the 8" driver. We recommend that you solder this connection for reliability, butthis is not essential. Make sure the cable is not obstructing the ports or going torattle on the drivers cone. Now simply locate the driver into the flush hole andapply the screws, again tightening carefully as not to strip them or slip andpuncture the cone.
Insert the Amplifier.
Insert the Speaker.

Internally, the RED and BLACK wires connect directly to the speaker driver terminals. Black is negative (-), Redpositive (+). Make sure the cable is sufficiently anchored and if extending, make sure your connection iscorrectly insulated. Do not apply power until you have double-checked all wiring and connections. Thefollowing is external connection options:
For connecting the S200W to multi-channel surround sound amplifiers you will require an RCA adaptor lead, ofappropriate length, that has 1x RCA plug to 2x RCA plugs. (See WES catalogue, section 8.) Connect thisbetween the "Low Level INPUT" RCA terminals, both L & R, on the S200W. Connect the other end (1xRCA plug) to the "SUB WOOFER OUTPUT" terminal on your amplifiers rear panel.
For connecting the to a standard stereo amplifier you will require a stereo RCA lead, of appropriatelength, that has 2x RCA plug to 2x RCA plugs. (See WES catalogue, section 8.) Connect this betweenthe "Low Level INPUT" RCA terminals, both L & R, on the . Connect the other end to the"PREAMP OUTPUT" terminals on your amplifiers/preamplifiers rear panel. This output MUST beyour amplifiers volume control so that your volume control will affect the subwoofers volume level too.
“LOW LEVEL OUTPUT” is for connecting additional S200W sub woofer amplifiers. For connecting the to an amplifier without PREAMP outputs you will either cut and split the existing
speaker connection leads or acquire additional speaker connection cable, of appropriate length, toconnect the with your normal speaker connection. (See WES catalogue, section 13.)Connect the speaker cable to your amplifiers speaker output terminals, connect this to the“HILEVEL IN” terminals. Then connect the “HILEVEL OUT” to your existing stereo speakers.Double-check your left & right, and the positive & negative polarity in all your speaker cable connections.
Your existing stereo speakers have a low frequency cutoff (the lowest frequency possible to be produced by sucha speaker), any sound below this frequency would not normally be heard, thus you acquired a sub woofer toreproduce these lower frequencies. The control labelled “PWR/PRT FREQ.” will set this frequency where youwant the sub woofer to take over. Check your Stereo speakers instruction manual for this value, or simply adjustby ear. A boomy bass sound means the frequency is too high (both the sub and your stereo speakers aregenerating bass) A mellow but slightly empty sound means the frequency is too low (a gap exist between the suband the stereo speakers). Adjust the "GAIN" also. Unsatisfactory sound will also result if the S200W “PHASE”switch is set incorrectly. Try both selections. For connection to an amplifier with "Sub Out", set the frequency tomaximum (180Hz) and make your adjustments via your amp (see its instruction manual). Generally, many hoursof listening can occur before correct levels are accomplished. You should also experiment with the location ofyour sub woofer as this can dramatically improve performance.

General Subwoofer Location InformationThe biggest impediment to good quality bass from a subwoofer usually haslittle to do with the subwoofer itself but the problem is that a sub produces longwave lengths (bass) form standing waves in rooms with parallel walls, resulting in a very uneven distribution of sound level throughout the listeningroom. Careful location of the subwoofer can help. First, keep your subwooferaway from a corner by at least two feet. Corner placement seems attractivebecause it increases the bass output but this location also excites more(usually unwanted) room resonance. Next, by placing the subwoofer so thatthe distance from the woofer to the nearest two walls is significantly different, you can stagger these standing waves so that they don't line up on top of eachother. The proper phasing of the subwoofer depends on its location relative tothe other speakers. The easiest way to get this right is to try it and ofphase; whichever way has the most bass is the right way. If it's too much bass, try adjusting the frequency cut-off or just turn the subs volume down.

One Subwoofer or Two?Far more effective than finding eventhe most ideal subwoofer location of asingle subwoofer is to use twosubwoofers. They can effectivelycompliment each other by having onewoofer's peaks filling in the otherwoofer's troughs. In addition tofollowing the same considerationsmentioned above, you'll want to placethe two woofers so that they aredifferent distances from the wallsrelative to each other.

rd option is via the speaker jacks, this is notrecommended because it is not an ideal soundsource, however, run the speaker cables from

What About Movies?-
The methods here will help get you the most accurate bass. If your goal is strictly maximum "slamitude," just stick your sub in thecorner, turn up all the knobs and have fun. Finding the perfect settings and location takes time. If you have low tolerance for movingspeakers and twiddling with your audio gear, realize that you're missing a few simple techniques by which you may be able to greatlyimprove the sound of your system. Let your ear be the final judge. We'll give you some techniques and advice, but the science ofroom acoustics is so complex it defies easy answers.
It's relatively easy to put a XLS800 into your system and hear more bass. What's difficult is making the XLS800's bass integrate withthe sound of your main speakers. A poorly integrated XLS800 will sound thick, heavy boomy, and unnatural, calling attention to thefact that you have smaller speakers reproducing the frequency spectrum from the midrange up, and the big XLS800 putting out lowbass.
Room acoustics have an enormous impact on the sound of speakers, including the XLS800s. A phenomenon called "standingwaves" makes bass response uneven from place to place in your room. To experience this for yourself, put on a CD with a strong, consistent bass line. Notice how the volume of the bass goes up and down as you move around the room. Stand in one place andthen squat down-you will probably notice that the bass changes in the vertical plane as well! Because the XLS800's location affectshow standing waves are created, the first step to getting accurate bass response is finding the right spots for your XLS800 relating toyour listening position. We'll share a few guidelines that may be helpful, but in the long run nothing beats trial, error and your ownears.
This is the advice most often given and it certainly will yield loud bass. But corner mounting may make the woofer sound "one note-ey," and boomy on music. If lack of bass volume is your biggest XLS800 problem, this may be the answer for you.
Bass waves build up and "hang out" at room boundaries (walls). Your system will sound thick and heavy when your listening chair isup against a wall. If you must sit against the wall because of furniture layout, place your XLS800 away from walls and corners.
Avoid putting the XLS800 the same distance from two walls. For example, if you have a 20' wide room, don't put the XLS800 10'from each wall. Similarly, don't put the XLS800 near a corner and equidistant from the side and rear walls. Instead, stagger thedistances to each wall.
Even though bass sounds are non-localizable, cabinet resonance and other factors conspire to make this less true in practice than intheory. It'll be much easier to get seamless blending between sub and main speakers if they are on the same side of the room. Ifpossible, put the XLS800 behind the plane of the main speakers. At very least, keep the XLS800 in the front half of the room.
Put your woofer in the same spot as your listening position. It's best to raise the XLS800 off the ground to seated ear height (use asturdy, non-resonant platform). Play a piece of music with an ascending and descending bass line. Crawl around the floor on yourhands and knees…until you find the spot where the bass sounds smoothest, and where each bass note has about the same volumeand clarity. Avoid positions where some notes 'hang' longer and/or sound slower or thicker than others. When you've determinedwhere the bass sounds best, put the XLS800 there.
Using two asymmetrically placed subs will minimize the effects of standing waves in your room, yielding smoother bass response aswell as better dynamic range. But don't run out and buy another sub just yet. Get the sub you have now to sound its best beforespending more money. You may be perfectly happy with just one sub once you've tried our suggestions.
The XLS800 is NOT magnetically shielded and may damage your TV if placed too close to the set. Select an unused video input onyour TV to bring up a single colour screen. If you see any colour distortion anywhere on the screen, an unshielded speaker is tooclose to the set and should be moved away from the TV until the colour distortion disappears.
Position and adjustments are interactive so every time you move your XLS800, you need to readjust the sub volume, low pass filterand phase (polarity). When properly adjusted, you won't "hear" the XLS800 at all. It will sound like your main speakers are making allthe sound- except with a whole lot more bass than they could muster all on their own.
Get a suitable test CD or DVD with sine wave signals or warble tones covering the range of 20Hz to 200Hz or so. Using a soundlevel metre, match the output at the listening position at 50Hz and 150Hz [using 'C' weighting and 'slow' metre response] byadjusting the volume control of the XLS800. Make sure the volume control on your preamp [or receiver] remains at the exact samevolume. If you don't have a metre or test discs, use a CD with vocals and a consistent acoustic bass line and set level to the pointwhere the upper and lower ranges of the bass sound well balanced.
If your main speakers are full size with good bass response, set the low pass filter to 60Hz - 80Hz to start. If your main speakers arebookshelf designs, set the low pass filter in the 80Hz - 100Hz range. If you have compact satellites, set the low pass filter to 150Hzto start. Put on a test CD or DVD with test tones. With a fixed input level, carefully measure the output level at the listening positionfor each…interval between 30 and 200Hz and write it down or make a line plot on a sheet of graph paper. Listen while you measure. You hear differently than the sound level metre does…trust your ears, not the metre. Raise or lower the low-pass filter setting on theXLS800 to achieve the smoothest response. Turn the low pass filter down if there's an excess of output around the crossover point, turn it up if there's a response dip. Do not be alarmed if you have response variations of several dB from test tone to test tone. Youare seeing normal variations in response caused by the speaker's interaction with the room. Absolute flat response is a worthy butsomewhat unrealistic expectation in most systems and rooms. If you don't have a metre and test disc, use your ear to make thissetting. Put on a CD with male voice and a consistent bass line. Adjust the low-pass filter until the male voice sounds "full" andnatural but not thick and heavy.
Using a test signal at the nominal crossover frequency [you set in the step above], set the phase of the XLS800 to deliver the highestoutput at the listening position. It helps to have a friend on hand to change the polarity setting on the sub while you measure andlisten.
All these adjustments are interactive. Once you set polarity, go back and re-adjust level and low-pass filter settings to get thesmoothest response. The final proof of optimal performance is in the listening. Put on a CD with an acoustic bass. The bassinstruments should appear to be coming from the main speakers, not the sub. The sub should be audibly "invisible."
If you listen to movies with your new set-up, you may find that the bass is a little "light" and doesn't deliver the impact you expect. Noproblem-just turn up the XLS800 volume until you are happy. Mark the volume settings that are best for music and movies andreadjust as you switch sources. If that's too inconvenient, choose a mid-point level that gives you the best balance.
A well-integrated XLS800 produces a seamless sound with natural reproduction of music and no boomy thump.

EACH
The XLS1000 is a true audiophile subwoofer. It is easily capable of out performing a majority of units costing multiples more. A beautifully clean sound with very fast and tight bass at either subtle volumes or at extra high SPL, reproducing deep, dynamic and detailed bass at frequencies down to the infra-sonic. This top-of-the-line subwoofer will exceed the requirements for a majority of systems and rooms with both accuracy in music and explosive effects for Home Theatre that will shake your world! The incredible depth of bass goes down below 18Hz in an enclosure of only 60 litres. An eXtra-Long-Stroke 12” Peerless subwoofer is used, set in the forward firing mode. The Peerless XLS, extra heavy duty, exotic material manufactured subwoofer is complemented by a duplicate 12” rear mounted Passive Radiator. This is a non-powered “Drone Cone” that utilises the low frequency energy within the box, similar to a port but with some distinct advantages that improve performance and specifications. Our dual 12” design achieves superior audiophile sound with lower than normally achievable frequency response for a given sized enclosure, all without the air breathing distortion normally associated with a vented enclosure used at such low frequencies and high volume levels

Beware and enjoy.
Designed By Russell Storey of Stones Sound Studio.Welcome to our new range of high performance speaker systems available ready-made or in kit form. Every aspect of the cabinet design has been tailored to maximizethe performance of the XLS range of premium drivers. These impressive drivers usecast iron baskets with double magnets and a highly efficient and robust motor system.
roll surround and open spider for low compression and lowdistortion at very high sound levels not previously achieved in such small box volumes.A 12" Passive radiator is used in the rear of the box to tune the subwoofer performanceand add extra bass output at frequencies below what is normally achievable byconventional drivers. This design achieves ultra-low distortion at even very high volumelevels and a frequency response that extends below human hearing, it will make thecouch shake! Double thick 25mm cabinet walls and 36mm front baffle with unique boxconstruction techniques, double panel bracing, interlocking carpentry joints, curvedoutside edges and all internal edges are also curved to reduce any turbulence noisesgenerated by the intensely high air velocities involved. A new 200Wrms, protectedsubwoofer amp has been developed in conjunction with our audio consultant, RussellStorey, to achieve remarkable performance from such a reasonably priced unit. This all-enclosed all-improved amp module has a frequency response below 10Hz with verylow harmonic distortion at these frequencies (beware - most amps fail in this area) andbuilt-in overdrive protection with EQ switching and low-pass adjustments. This amplifierwill fulfill the needs of the most discerning users, however, the performance potential ofthe XLS subwoofer is such that any additional expenditure on the amplifier stage wouldimprove over-all performance and sound quality. To this end we have also madeavailable an XLS1000 kit without an amp hole cut-out so that you may add your owninternal or external amplifier solution and really disturb your neighbors. The XLS1000will reproduce the lowest tone of a pipe organ, rattle your windows with the "12thoverture", make puddle rings in your drinks on the coffee table with Jurassic Park andbring the police around while watching the latest James Bond movie.

EXPERIMENT ON ROOM LOCATION FOR THE XLS SUBWOOFER BOX
CORNER PLACEMENT
RECOMMENDED LOCALES
I CANNOT HEAR THE SUB?
The biggest impediment to good quality bass from your subwoofer usually has little to do with the subwoofer itself, but its locationwithin the room. The problem is that a sub produces extra long wave lengths (bass) that form "Standing Waves" in the room, resulting in a potentially uneven distribution of sound level at your favourite listening position. Some attention to the location of thesubwoofer can help dramatically improve your listening experience and achieve remarkable improvements in sound quality.
We recommend that you keep your XLS1000 away from the corners by at least two feet. Corner placement can increase the bassoutput, but this location can excite large amounts of unwanted room resonances that will rattle objects and may give a boomy noteto your bass sound. Try as an experiment. You may and like this setup, you are the final judge. Just watch that crockery!
In , you are placing the XLS1000 so that the distance from the subwoofer to the nearest wall and its opposing wall isdifferent. This will stagger the standing waves so that they don't compound up on top of each other, produce rattling resonances.
, trying different locations for both you and the sub will show benefits of what's possible and thus help inresolving a final location with minimal compromises. Locating the XLS1000 toward the front, as near to your main speakers aspossible is also recommended. Remember also to be careful not to obstruct the rear firing woofer, this is the subsonics.
The XLS1000 is an exceptionally clean, distortion-free subwoofer. As a result, it can be quite difficult to judge the bass content andcorrect location of this sub and therefor feel immediately satisfied with your location decision. After all, subsonics are felt not heard! The subwoofer location experiment may require some living with, and along with the adjustments of level controls, etc, the finalsetup may take some extra time and many different media sources before you are generally satisfied that your getting maximumsound quality from your XLS1000. Although, if you cant exactly here the sub, its probably perfectly tuned and in the best location!

S200W AMPLIFIER CONNECTION & ADJUSTMENTS
HOME THEATRE
The S200W included with the XLS1002 is a 200 Watt RMS amplifiercapable of producing clean audio from 180Hz down to below 20Hz.
For home theatre, connect the S200W via twin RCA to a single RCAadaptor into the SUBWOOFER output on your home theatre amplifier.Adjust the FREQ to maximum (180Hz) as the bass filtering is done byyour home theatre amp (See its instruction manual for details).

HIGH-END AUDIO AMP & PRE-AMP COMBINATIONSimilar to above. Connect to the amplifiers stereo PRE-AMP outputs.Use RCA splitters as we recommend NOT connecting to the OUTPUTon the S200W as it is NOT high-pass output filtered. Once attached, adjust the S200Ws' FREQ. control to suit your main speakers.eg. Very small satellite mains would require about 100 to 150Hz.Full sized mains would require a lot lower, say 50Hz or less.Adjust the FREQ control until you are happy with the overlap. That isthat there is minimal sound being produced by both speakers whichmay give you a boomy sound at this crossover point. Adjust to ear.

PHASE SWITCHING
VIDEO-AUDIO MODE
Simply try it and of phase; whichever way has the most bassis the right way. If it's too much bass, try adjusting the FREQ.or just turn the subs gain down.
"VIDEO MODE" is a subsonic filter (<20Hz) to protect your XLS1002from excessive cone movement. If you are in a small or difficult to tuneroom, or if you are listening to ridiculously loud music or specialeffects, or if the CD or Turntable keeps skipping, or your neighbourskeep complaining, you may wish to switch in the Sub-Sonic Switch to"VIDEO" mode to protect your unit from damaging sub-sonic energies.

is without a hole for the S200W amplifier. This boxrequires either a hole cut into it to suit your choice of inbuiltamplifier or requires speaker cable access via a small hole or ourJ706 recessed single speaker socket. We would suggest youlocate this on the bottom of the box for an attractive concealment.
Once you have taken the box out of the packaging, you shouldmake a decision on the box orientation that you desire. This iswhether you want the Amplifier and/or wood feature panel to theLEFT or to the RIGHT of the front driver. Once this choice ismade you will know which side is the bottom and thus where toput the feet which require holes to be drilled to affix.
LOOK HERE! READ ME! IMPORTANT!
For an improved, tight bass response it is highly recommended that you attach some heavy-duty spiked feet to the XLS1000.For our recommended SPIKE35, a 5mm hole is drilled on all 4 corners (in about 5 to 7cm from the edge). A nut and bolt is used to affixthe feet, so it is recommended that you do the feet first, for easy bolt access and for better box stability when installing the drivers, etc.

Place your speaker cabinet on a non-slip, non-scratch surface.Identify the orientation of the box as you desire (Left or Right).
Insert the Amplifier. The ports are on the bottom side, so make sure you install theamp upright. Pilot holes are pre-drilled so simply screw in thesupplied screws, caution that you don't thread the screws byover tightening. If using an electronic screwdriver, adjust to amedium/high torque setting. Beware which way is UP!
Insert the Wadding. (Ignore as wadding is already installed.)The internals require some dampening. Ensure you cover the amplifiers plastic cover, but allowing the connection
Apply the gasket tape. For a good air-tight seal between the speaker and cabinet,it is required that you apply gasket tape around the wholecircumference of the flange on both of the woofers.
Insert the Passive Radiator. This is the driver without any magnet. It is mounted on the rear ofthe cabinet. Identified as the hole without the feature panel or grillmounting plugs. Gradually tighten each screw, traversing acrossthe woofer. Carefully, ensure the wadding does not interfere withthe driver and that the gasket seals tight and proper and you don'tthread the screws or accidentally slip and puncture the cone!
Insert the Speaker.Cabling is supplied with the amp and will connect directly to the 12" driver. We highly recommend that you solder this connection for reliability. Makesure the cable is not going to rattle on the drivers cone. Now simply locatethe driver into the flush hole and apply the screws, again tighteningcarefully as not to strip them or slip and puncture the cone.

Series Loudspeakers
12 SILICON CHIP siliconchip.com.au
Since we completed our description of the 20W class-A stereo amplifier a few months ago, readers have been asking us for a kit speaker system to match its
performance. As it happens, the Signature Series have been in devel-
opment for over a year now and we are very pleased to present a complete set of speakers which can be used in stereo or home theatre systems.
They provide excellent stereo spread and definition, very wide and smooth frequency response with very low harmonic distortion. And while they are eminently suitable for our Class-A amplifier, they can be matched up to any amplifier with a power output up to 120 watts per channel, when running normal program material.
The heart of these speakers are the very high performance Fountek ribbon tweeters. For those who are not familiar with ribbon tweeters, consider them as an extremely light filament of aluminium foil suspended between the poles of an extremely strong magnet. The audio signal from the
amplifier is passed directly through the ribbon and the interaction of the current with the strong magnetic field deflects the ribbon back and forth to produce sound.
Incredibly, such an apparently flimsy system can produce deafening sound levels and with unsurpassed fidelity, transient response and so on.
Ribbon tweeters have been around for a long time but until recently they have been largely confined to very ex-pensive esoteric loudspeakers systems and their reliability and ruggedness was always a little suspect.
In the particular Fountek JP3.0 ribbon speakers featured here, the aluminium ribbon weighs a mere 11 milligrams and is just 9 microns thick – much thinner than the pro-verbial human hair!
The aluminium ribbon is 66mm long and 8mm wide and suspended between the poles of a Neodymium magnet with a gap flux of 0.6 Tesla.
As you might expect, such a short piece of aluminium represents a very low resistance and it cannot be driven

At far right is the HD260 tower system and its dimensions while below is its centre channel variant the HD260C. The HD360, at right, uses a 6.5-inch woofer. The pick of the two systems is the HD260 because of its considerably higher efficiency: 92.5dB/1m/1W. Both systems produce commendably low harmonic distortion.
The impedance curves for both the Signature Series speaker systems show the classic “double hump” at the bass end, due to the tuning provided by the bass reflex port.

directly by any normal audio amplifier. Hence, the tweeter has an integral matching transformer with a frequency response to 120kHz. This results in a very flat tweeter im-pedance of 7 from 1kHz to 40kHz. The basic tweeter is also extremely efficient and in fact, is used with resistive attenuation to match the Peerless woofers used here.
Two separate stereo pairs of loudspeakers are presented, the Signature Series HD260 and HD360 systems. In addition, a centre channel variant of the HD260, the 260C was designed to complement the 260 and 360 for high-end Home Theatre A/V systems.
Depending on your budget, you may decide to build
either the HD260s or HD360s for a high performance stereo system. Alternatively, for high-end Home Theatre A/V system, you may decide on a mix of the HD260 (front) and HD360 (rear) together with the HD260C for the centre-front channel.
Whichever approach you take, you can be sure that you will be getting a sensational speaker system. Make no mistake, these ribbon units are the finest tweeters we ever heard. They are so clean in their definition and the pin-point localisation of instruments in a stereo spread has to be heard to be believed.
On top of that, these speakers have very low distortion – measured at around 0.3% THD at 1kHz and 1 watt.
HD260 & HD360The HD260 is a small tower speaker using the Fountek
ribbon tweeter and two Peerless HDS 832873 5-inch mid/range woofers. This uses a Nomex paper cone, a very large ferrite magnet and neoprene rubber roll surround. The HD260 system has exceptional efficiency of 92.5dB/1m/1W and will provide very good volume levels from the SILICON CHIP 20W class-A amplifier, even in large rooms.
The HD260 is a MTM (midrange-tweeter-midrange) arrangement (also known as D’Appolito) with a rear bass reflex port. The HD260C centre speaker is identical in every respect except that the tweeter is rotated through 90°, so that it will be vertical when the cabinet is laid on its side.
The smaller HD360 bass reflex system uses the Fountek ribbon tweeter and Peerless 830883 6.5-inch midrange woofer, also with a rear port. Its efficiency is somewhat lower but still quite respectable at 87.5dB/1m/1W.
Both speaker enclosures were developed using LEAP
The overall frequency response of the Signature Series HD260 and HD360 speakers is commendably flat to below 50Hz. This is the response of the HD260.
This series of photos show the lineup of the drivers used in the Signature series. The woofers are made by Peerless and both have rugged dies cast chassis. The ribbon tweeter is made by Fountek and incorporates very high quality matching transformer. Note the fine mesh protecting the ribbon from curious fingers.

5 wave diffraction analyser and FFT vibration analysis software. The resulting enclosures have a Butterworth low pass filter response to ensure optimum bass and transient response.
While the enclosures are relatively small, they are very strong and rigid to ensure very low panel resonances. They are made from 18mm MDF (medium density fibreboard) while the baffle is made from two thicknesses (36mm), to allow the ribbon tweeter to be flush-mounted and still provide maximum rigidity.
In addition, the inside edge of the woofer holes are chamfered to prevent diffraction effects at midrange fre-quencies and the HD-260 has internal bracing of the large side panels.
Rear bass port Both enclosures employ a rear port to ensure a reduction
of overall driver distortion and cross-modulation which can be generated by front ports. According to the designer, with a front port a form of speaker (low frequency) distor-
tion and cross modulation is generated by the compressed air exiting the port out of phase with the woofer creating (modulation) interference of the woofer cone. This interfer-ence of the woofer cone occurs at medium to high playback levels (port velocity) and is one of the factors reducing overall dynamic range or head-room of the transducers and speaker system.
The port itself is 63mm in diameter with small flared ends. All this is done to keep distortion at a minimum.
Crossover networksUsing the best drivers and a carefully designed cabinet
would be a waste of time without an equal standard in the crossover networks. In the Signature Series the crossover networks are quite complex (Linkwitz Riley with Bessel /Butterworth response). They were developed to enable good linear phase and minimum distortion through the passband and overlap regions of both the woofer and rib-bon tweeter.
They have been developed with bi-wiring in mind so

Fig.1: Above is the crossover network for the HD260 while at right is the network for the HD360. Both use an 18dB/octave rolloff below the crossover frequency to the tweeter and a 12/octave slope above the crossover frequency to the woofer.
Both crossover networks are built onto the same PC board and are presented as shown here. There is no assembly work to be done. You just install them in the cabinets and connect ’em’ up.
DECEMBER 2007 15siliconchip.com.au
the tweeter and woofer filter networks are essentially quite separate, as shown in the diagrams of Fig.1 & Fig.2.
The tweeter is fed with a third-order high pass (18dB/octave) filter and the woofer is fed with a second-order (12dB/octave) low pass filter. In the case of the HD-260, the crossover frequency is 3.8kHz and 3.2kHz in the HD-360.
Both crossover networks are based on the same PC board but there are differences. Each crossover network employs air-cored inductors, non-inductive wirewound resistors and 400V metallised polyester capacitors. High quality components are used throughout.
Building themThe designer of these Signature Series loudspeakers has
been very particular in specifying how everything must go together, from the initial specification of the drivers, down to the very last detail of the cabinets, crossover components and even oxygen-free copper wiring. We don’t think that last detail is really necessary but that is a story for another time.
This very fine attention to detail on the part of the de-signer has made the task difficult for the kit supplier but it means that you, the ultimate kit-builder, will have an easy time putting them together.
The loudspeaker cabinets are supplied fully assembled in two forms, unfinished MDF or black vinyl. In the case of the unfinished MDF cabinets, it is up to you as to how you finish them.
The prototype cabinets featured in this article were spray-painted to a very high standard. If you have access to a high-pressure spray gun and spray booth, so much the better.
Alternatively, if you intend painting them, we recom-mend using a roller, to avoid leaving brush marks – it is amazing how brush marks can catch the light and become noticeable, especially if gloss paint is used.
Not only are the cabinets fully assembled but they also come fully lined with a grey felt, to damp internal reflec-tions and they are also supplied with the fully finished grille cloth frames.
This photo shows the crossover network installed in the base of the HD360 enclosure.
Making the connections to the woofer. The terminals are colour-coded and differently sized so that you cannot make a mistake.
Fit the woofer carefully and do not touch the cone at this point, otherwise you may damage it. It is secured to the baffle with six Allen screws.
Making the connections to the tweeter. Do it exactly as the photo depicts. Don’t over-tighten the nuts on the tweeters – it would be a shame to damage such a magnificent performer.
16 SILICON CHIP siliconchip.com.au
No special tools are required to assemble the kits and no soldering is required. You will need a Phillips head screwdriver, a 3mm Allen key to install the speakers to the baffle and an adjustable wrench to attach the crossover connections to the terminals of the tweeters.
The fully assembled crossover networks even include the wiring to the speaker terminal panels – as we said, there is no soldering at all!
Order of assemblyThe order of assembly is the same, regardless of whether
you are putting together the HD260s, HD360s or HD260C (centre speaker). The first step is to install the crossover network in the base of the cabinet. Check the back of the cabinet make sure you do not have it upside down – the rectangular hole for the terminal panel should be below the circular bass port.
Fit six Velcro tabs to the underside of the crossover PC board and then pass it through the lower woofer hole and secure it to the felt on the base of the cabinet. Pass the terminal panel out through the rear of the cabinet, making sure that you do not disturb the felt which covers the rec-tangular hole. Then secure the panel with four countersunk MDF wood screws.
Bring out the wires for the woofer(s) through their respective holes in the front baffle. Fit the push-on con-nectors from the crossover speaker cables to the woofer(s). The wires are colour-coded (red for positive and black for negative) are differently sized so that you cannot make a mistake when you do the connections.
Carefully place the woofer into its hole in the front baffle and secure it with six Allen head screws using a 3mm Allen key. It is important that you do not over-tighten these screws otherwise you will strip the holes in the MDF panel.
Mounting the tweeterNow is the time to mount the highly prized Fountek
ribbon tweeters. Important: do not remove the protection label from the front of the tweeter until you have completed the assembly.
First, check that acoustic cover is fitted behind tweeter cutout hole is in place. Then bring out the tweeter wires from the crossover. These are fitted with colour-coded (red for positive, green for negative) ring terminals to suit the threaded posts of the tweeter.
Make the connections and tighten them with a small adjustable wrench – do not over-tighten them! Hint: angle the connector lugs to allow enough room between the felt cover and back of the ribbon magnet when installing the tweeter.
Then install the tweeter to the front baffle with four Al-len head screws. Again – do not over-tighten them. Next, you can carefully remove the protection label from the tweeter faceplate.
Bi-wiring optionJust back-tracking for a moment – if you intend running
these speakers are bi-wired, with separate stereo amplifiers driving the tweeters and woofers, then the installation procedure is slightly different. You need to cut links LK1 and LK2 on the crossover PC boards and then remove the gold plated links from the 4-terminal panels.
Keep the plated links (possibly stick them to the rear of

the cabinets, in case you ever want to run the speakers with conventional amplifier drive (ie, not bi-wired).
A final step is to connect a 1.5V battery across the termi-nals of the completed loudspeaker. With the battery positive to the red terminal, the woofer cone should move forward. If that’s OK, you can fit the grille cloth frames.
You are now almost ready for a listening session. When positioning your speakers in the room, make sure that they are not in the room corners and are out from the walls by around a metre or so. Ideally, they should be placed on stands so that the tweeters are at your ear level, when you are seated.
Making your own enclosuresIf you want to save some money by building your own
enclosures, all the necessary dimensions and other infor-mation is accessible on the designer’s website at www.stonessoundstudio.com.au.
If it was our choice, we would pick the complete kits rather than going to all the trouble to make the cabinets. Sure, you will save some money but there is a great deal of work involved. Consider that the front baffle needs to be laminated from two 18mm sections and you need to make the bass port with its carefully flared ends.
There are really no short cuts to making the cabinets and if you don’t follow the diagrams very closely, you will prejudice the sound quality. The above site has all the information on these speakers so if you want to check any aspect of the design, you can readily do so. SC
