Full Paper
According to Aristotle, Man is a social Animal. In view of that social work plays an
important role in creating awareness among the public pertaining to the social integrity, social
coherency, social consciousness and socialization towards enabling human relationship by
organising seminars, conferences, workshops, rallies in the form of huge gathering directly /

inequalities and social injustices.
After Novel Corona Virus came into existence, the human relations are totally
changed .In this corona context , the social workers have to change their strategies and adopt
innovative, preventive, curative, ameliorative measures and generating awareness from
socialisation to individualisation /isolation, maintaining Social Distance ,wearing the Masks
and Gloves, Quarantine , Home Quarantine etc.
Many authors have tried to define social work profession. Werner W. Boehm came to
the United States from Germany in 1937. Boehm is known as a social work educator whose
pioneering work was in curriculum development in the U.S. and social work in Canada. He
taught at the University of Minnesota from 1958 to 1963. Werner Boehm's definition of
social work is widely used even today.
According to him "Social Work seeks to enhance the social functioning of individuals,
singularly and in groups, by activities focused upon their social relationships which constitute
an interaction between individuals and their environments. These activities can be grouped
into three functions:
i. The provision of individual and social resources,
ii. The restoration of impaired capacity, and
iii. The prevention of social dysfunction
The National Association of Social Workers (USA) in1958 defined social work
practice as a "Constellation of value, purpose, sanction, knowledge and method."
The working definition identified three purposes of social work practice.
To assist individuals and groups, to identify and resolve or minimize problems arising
out of disequilibrium between themselves and the environment.
12
To identify potential areas of dis-equilibrium, between individuals or groups and the
environment in order to prevent the occurrence of disequilibrium.
In addition to these, curative and preventive aims to seek out, identify and strengthen
the maximum potential in individuals groups and community.
Profession and Environment
A profession involves practice-doing something with a high degree of skill. The skills are
based on a fund of knowledge that has been organized into an internally consistent body of
theory.
As a profession with a long-standing declared focus on person-in-environment, social
work might be expected to play a leadership role in interdisciplinary efforts to tackle
environmental threats to human well-being and continued existence.
The profession’s longstanding person-in-environment perspective is examined for
constraints that inhibit understanding of pandemic situations and environmental issues and
the development of effective strategies
The values and principles of professional social work:
i) Belief on the dignity and creative ability of an individual
ii) Freedom of thought and work as long as they do not violate the other
individual’s freedom and thought
iii) Belief on the right of self-determination.
The social work purely based on humanitarian philosophy and render services for the
needy people in general, the services have been rendering by the social workers in various
aspects which are Preventive, Curative, Rehabilitative and Ameliorative in particular.
Further, it follows the Multy Disciplinary Approach for identifying and resolving Multy
Issues of communities and country
The roles and responses of professional social workers:
The professional Social Workers have to play various significant roles and responses
during emergency and pandemic situations. The responses of them in pandemic periods are
Rescue, Relief, Rehabilitative and Reconstructive etc. The roles of social workers such as
Education ,Motivation, Sensitization, Mobilization, Convergence, Advocacy and Awareness
creation on various social issues and identification of the problems on one hand and to
13
conduct social research /surveys in order to seek solutions in and around of the vicinities of
the communities , country and the continents of the World as well on the other.
The focus of social work practice is on the interactions between people and systems in
the social environment” with a goal of restoration of balance or equilibrium within immediate
social systems where there had been some disruption.
The focus of social work intervention thus is on the interaction between humans and
their environments. Social workers may direct change strategies towards individuals or
towards the environment and at other times towards the interaction of individual and
environment. In all cases, these strategies are directed towards changing the nature of the
person situation interaction. Social workers focus on problems (i) tasks involved in life
transitions (ii) tasks in using and influencing elements of the environments
